Show you how to repair the roller on a Bernina 1530 (and 1630) that is no longer working using silicone earring backs. Done for my daughter Caresse Tarawa and anyone else that might find it helpful.
NOTE: IF YOU SEE THAT THE ROLLER IS ACTUALLY TURNING THE DIAL BEFORE THE FIX, THEN THIS WON'T BE YOUR PROBLEM.. I recently got a hold of my daughters 1630 and found that the issue was not the same as what I had. The roller ball was definitely turning the dials but the cursor was not moving from the top left hand corner of the screen. I entered a service menu (turn off the machine then hold in both the OK and Clear button while turning on the machine) which moves the cursor to a different part of the screen. Moving the roller I could see that the cursor was only able to move to the left, even when trying to move it right. The issue was a component on the motherboard. I took it in to a repairer who knew what part needed to be replace.... Sorry not sure what he did at this stage. If you are desperate for info, contact 'Make it Sew' in Tauranga, New Zealand (they fixed it for $125NZ). It now works great!

Thanks for a great instructional video. I have had a problem with my trackball on my Bernina 1630 for a number of years. The Bernina repair shop was unable to help me. Finally this year I could only do a straight stitch as the trackball only went horizontally from the top left so other stitches could not be selected. I was thinking of replacement when my husband found your video. With trepidation & hope I followed your instruction & the trackball movement is now just a good as new. Saved me from having to get a new machine & replacing the one I have loved for 32 years. I am very happy. The earring backs I used were 3mm x 3mm. Also the location of these on the spindle is important so check the video to make sure they are in the correct position.

this is exactly the problem I have with mine. I bought my Bernina from Goodwill and was unable to test it. the rollerball only goes up and down so it's stuck in straight stitch. this video is a godsend!

Bought this machine from an estate. Three days of use and the trackball failed. I watched your wonderful video but took the machine to a BCT for prognosis. He said it was "irreparable". Knowing a certified technician said such, I felt fine about giving it a try. If I damaged it, it wouldn't be any more unusable, right? Watched your video a couple more times, then followed along. Voila! I'm feeling a bit puffed up right now. ;D Thank you soooo much!

Thank You! With the help of your video I was able to replace the roller ball assembly from a 1630 into my 1530 successfully. Had previously tried this repair, replacing dried out pieces with earing backs, but was unsuccessful. I have absolutely no sewing machine repair experience and was still able to accomplish the task with your video. Thank You! Thank You!!

The original rollers on my wife's Bernina 1530 are 4mm diameter x 3mm long. I could only find earring backs that are 3mm diameter (500 pieces for $6) and these worked fine. Be aware that earring backs come in several shapes (plug, daisy, square, etc.) and you need the smooth cylindrical column shape. After replacing the rollers and reassembling the machine, the LCD screen would only display the Service Menu. There is a small gray switch on the circuit board located between the CLR and OK buttons that places the machine in service mode or normal sewing mode. During the repair, this switch had been inadvertently bumped to service mode. After placing the switch back in normal sewing mode, the machine works great and I have enough earring backs for 249 more repairs.

This switch is clearly shown at the 1:09 mark in the video. I believe down is Service mode and up is Normal Sewing mode.

Thank you for this bit of information. I'm sure it will help another person, maybe me, if I get the courage to do this repair.

@@megbutcher3163 As I mentioned in a second post, the earring backings I ordered are too small. I sent a Messenger note to Caribe Tarawa but have not received a reply.

Have you opened the machine to see if the roller is moving the dials (you can only see one of the two when you take the side plate off). If the dial is not moving, then this might be the fix for your machine. If the dial is rotating, then see my updated description.... Probably a different problem.
