If your Bernina 1130 or 1230s needle bar is not going up and down, there may be a problem with the needle bar disengaging mechanism.
This may also apply to other models.
I show how to remove the back panels to gain full access to the mechanism.
First check your machine is not in basting mode as shown in this video.
Limited access is also available through the front via the take-up lever slot.

Instead of removing the spring to access the "thumb", simply turn the screw in the silver block on the needle bar to release the block. Then turn the handle and the silver block will spring upwards to expose the "thumb". After lubricating the "thumb", tighten the screw. (Be sure to remember where the silver block was.😊 ) Thanks for the great video. I was servicing my mom's 1030 and her "thumb" was gummed up. If anyone here needs to replace the ball bearing, I've got a video for it. Just search "Bernina 1030 Needle Postion". Look for the orange text in the thumbnail. Thanks again. ...Dawne

I can't thank you enough for making this repair video. Today my machine suddenly developed exactly the same problem after I pushed the basting button. I had no idea how to fix it. Your video was clear & detailed. I was able to do the repair and get back to my project. If not I would have had to stop, take it in to the repair shop, wait for them to get to it and repair it and pay the $$$ for the repair. Thank you again!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, thanks for making this video. I got a hand-me-down Bernina 1630 from my grandmother. (She's fine, just downsizing!) I was close to tears trying to figure out how to fix this issue. I even spent eight bucks on a service manual which *thoroughly* overwhelmed me. I was able to reach in from the front under the take up lever and poke the little black arm back in place with a pair of tweezers. No case removal needed! Thanks for clearly showing where that son of a gun is and how to correct it.

Hi. Glad to hear the video helped. I often reach in from the front with tweezers to actuate that lever too. You can lubricate it from the front as well. Cheers.

Thank you for the great instructional video. After watching your video and seeing the part that needed a drop of oil I realized you can see the part that needs oil through the slit in the front of the machine. If you have a oiler with a long needle nose on it you can put the drop of oil on the part without ever taking the machine apart. It worked for me. Thanks again.

Thanks. Yes that can work. I think I showed that near the end of the video. I take back off to service machine anyway.

I'm going to try it with my Bernina 931, I bought it to a dealer but it didn't work out. Now I am having a try hopefully 😅 I will remember how to but all the bits and pieces it back again.

WOW - Thank you SOOOOOOO much. My needle bar froze on my beloved Bernina 1030 (yes - it's over 30 years old). I was able to follow your concise directions (and clear video) and repair my machine myself! woohoo!! Happy Day

Thank you for making and sharing this video. I just repaired my mother's machine moments ago. She was sewing and the needle bar stopped working, just as you described. What a shock it was for her beloved machine to fail on her 71st birthday. I'm glad I was able to repair it and I have you to thank for it!

I can't thank you enough! My needle was stuck but after watching this I was able to understand what the cause was, unplugged and carefully through the front I was able to access the leveler that was stuck with a thin screwdriver without opening it at all. I toggled it and voila! I am back in business and saved hundreds of dollars! Thank you again!

You mention the difficulty of replacing the spring on the needle bar. You weren't kidding. I appreciate showing the points of attachment for the spring, but any chance you have tricks for getting it on. I'm about my 30th try in... :(

Hi , just wondering if we/ I could take out the actual motherboard/ separate it from the plastic backboard ( L-4200 ) if I have to repair/ replace an individual component/s . I own a Bernina 1130 and one of the capacitors is blown up and I intend to take it out and replace it with a substitute capacitor of same specifications ( I am based in London U.K.) . My question is does it need replacement? The reason I am asking this rather daft doubt is because when I used the multimeter to test the “ electrical/ electronic continuity “ of the PCB it appears to be alright even after the capacitor is blown up/ broken! That sounds weird to me, unless it is connected in parallel. Any thoughts/ suggestions/ DIY tips please. I am not interested to go to authorised Bernina dealer because they charge a fortune. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Ramana.

hi. great video btw. though i have a problem, not with the needle bar but with some thread being stuck between something. at 14:50, you are moving this thing back and forth. at the very end of it i have some thread which is stuck and cant seem to get it loose. and also to move it, is imoossible for me because the nob from where you turned it wore out. so if i put it in place it just turns without the mechanism turning. PLS HELP anyone

Hi , I am just after buying a Bernina 1130 and to my utter frustration., it is just not working. Initially I thought that it could be due to the “ fuses blow up “ on the motherboard ( L-4200 ) . After carefully and painstakingly testing all the important connections and fuses ( and also innumerable capacitors) everything is electronically intact. Out of frustration, I rang the seller and was told that the machine was in disuse and stored in the loft for considerable time . This makes me suspect that main mechanical transmission is “ gummed up “ beyond simple oiling. My question is is it “ ALRIGHT “ to apply heat with a blow dryer while the PCBs are in situ ? Or do I have to remove all the PCBs to mend the mechanism/s to free them up ( because I don’t want to spoil/ destroy the “ old/ageing “ PCBs which are prohibitively expensive) ? Would really appreciate your feedback/ tips please ASAP. I look forward to hearing from you, regards, Ramana.

I was just given a Bernina 930, and the needle bar was stuck so I took it apart, cleaned the plunger inside and re-engaged the little black 'thumb' with the needle bar and it worked great, for about 5 minutes and then the little black piece broke in half. I think it was just unused for so long and gummed up it was toast. Do you know if it's possible to replace that part of the machine by any chance? Thanks!

You might be best getting hold of your nearest Bernina dealer to see if they can do it or if they have the part. Thanks.

Hi, just bought a bernina 1130 and found out it only sews backwards, it doesn’t come with a manual, not sure how to fix this problem, hope you can help. I don’t think it’s the button hole stitches. Thanks
@InStitches
@InStitches Год назад
Hi. There can be several causes of that problem. Could be a mechanical bind, could be a sensor issue or it could be an issue with the stepper motor that drives the mechanism. Thanks.

Thanks. It's hard to say without looking at it but it sounds like it could be a problem with one of the electronic boards unfortunately.
