Overture to Candide - Leonard Bernstein The University of Texas Wind Ensemble Jerry F. Junkin, conductor Live in Bates Recital Hall - Austin, Texas September 30, 2018
This is a terrific rendition that more than holds its own against professional full orchestras of musicians twice their age. (There are many examples on RU-vid.) It is so crisp, rich and energetic. I actually don't miss the strings at all, which I didn't think was possible with this piece. Well done.
The perceived tempo changes are written in. I have played and heard this thing done with the tempo sloshing around and it completely loses the point. It is written to be ahead of the beat, one tempo, constantly driven from beginning to end - no letting up especially in the more melodic part.
