Berry Bros. & Rudd - 2007 Single Malt Islay (Caol Ila) Review 

The Titan animation is the most epic thing to happen.

Talisker 10 is a great briney whiskey, and have found it for right around 60 in Dallas TX. Gentlemen, I am loving the back and forth variants before the titan animation.

Daniel, I expect this sort of intro botch every time. So few ways you antagonize Rex as he does you. You deserve this, we all deserve to see it.

This is my favorite Caol Ila. I sipped on some this weekend for my first Father's Day. Good stuff. Interestingly, they were like $57.

Mr. Mooch and the hobbit been watching you guys for a while now and I finally got myself my first Japanese whisky , suntory toki it has now become one of my favorites, if I hadn't found the vault/ tribe I never would have known such greatness existed.

The hate on Brimstone is weird to me. I loved it, especially paired with a sharp cheddar.

Caol Ila is definitely on the simpler profile of Islay expressions, at least their peated stuff is. Their 18yr old unpeated cask strength is one of my favorite whiskies period. I stand by that it tastes like if Islay tried to do Irish. I still really enjoy the 12, especially for something with a enjoyable smokey profile without breaking the bank.

Was gifted a bottle of this Caol Ila by our West Coast Office. It’s delicious! May have to get a 2nd bottle as we’re drinking through it fairly quickly. And re: distillery bottling vs independent bottling of Caol Ila, I definitely prefer the independent single cask versions. Way more variability and fun most of the time. Slainte!

That Laphroaig bottle is determined to stay on that back shelf it seems... also Caol Ila is a favorite of mine, but it's rare that I can buy a bottle due to the price these days. At best I might be able to get a pour at a restaurant and bar... when I can go back to those without feeling terrified that is.

As far as an Islay, for under $60, I always reach for McClellands Single Malt, which right now, is listed at the LCBO for $46.15 CDN for a 750ml bottle.... which definitely puts it in 'budget' range, with whatever that would work out to with the U.S. exchange rate.

laphroaig 10 for $35 is wild. You're paying like $90 minimum here in Australia.

Growing up as a super taster I can concur with what Daniel says. I was a picky eater growing up because salty foods tasted like dumping a salt shaker into you food and any off flavors were cranked up to 11. I attribute my current level of enjoyment of food and drink to killing my taste buds with scalding hot coffee. Scorch your tongue a few times and everything starts tasting better.

I love some Brimstone but I don't find it overwhelming at all, to me I get a strong french vanilla note from it. Also I'm very sensitive to the vomit flavor that tends to show up in some scotches especially lighter unpeated single malts, so for me anything heavy on smoke or brine is fine because it masks that flavor.

You guys really need to get hold of some Scotch Malt Whisky Society number 53’s. Incredible bottlings if Caol Ila!

I am glad you mentioned the salt, to me Caol Ila always seemed like the saltiest of the Islay whiskies I have had. and some days that salt is much more obvious than others. it always seemed like a light smoke, strong salt though, especially compared to Laphroaig.

I love Balcones Brimstone mixed with Elijah Craig. The Brimstone provides the bold and robust initial taste; the Elijah Craig adds a smooth finish I call a whiskey "denouement" :)

Have not tried all the same ones you have, but I would break it down to 3 different things: for smoke, something like Teacher's, Brimstone, or Corsair Tripple Smoke; for briny, Oban or Talisker; for medicinal is where I would go with that Ardbeg, Coal Ila or Laphroaig

How is Talisker not your go-to suggestions for brine whiskey? Super accessible and really captures the brine palate. Also, is the Balcones Brimstone just super rare outside of the USA in general? I can hardly find it anywhere, and when I do it's ~250 USD per bottle.

My take on Caol Ila 12 is akin to a lighter Lagavulin, Lagavulin Light if you will...tasty

I'm thinking the episodes are being released out of order, or Emma is way devious. On a recent episode, they replaced Emma's Ardbeg bottle on the exemplar shelf with the Lagavulin 16, but Ardbeg is back in this episode. (Or maybe they never replaced it because they drank the Ardbeg to get rid of the Trader Joe's Tennessee Whiskey taste. Maybe Rex just reshelved the Ardbeg.) Crap, I think that is a Laphroaig bottle, not Ardbeg.

My bottle of Black Bottle was quite disappointing... not enough smoke! So I added more Caol Ila ... much better. :D

Smokey & briney? Then i'd say Talisker Storm. Can get bottles for just 25 euros if I am patient enough. Also, the Caol Ila 25 is amazeballs. A shame that it's just for Europe.

Lagavulin 16 in va is 120 but both Ardbeg 10 and Laphroiag 10 are right at 50

I bought a friend brimstone recently. I found it surprisingly unaggressive. Maybe I’m just so far into the smoke it doesn’t hit me😬

I love the fact that I'm NOT a super taster. Makes my life so much easier as I can eat anything and at any temperature and not be one of those complainers in restaurants griping their eggs are too runny or their soup is cold. What a pain. What kind of whiskey to I like? The brown ones.

Here in Iowa, I can find most things you praise highly, if I'm willing to drive far enough and search hard. But I swear, not a single bottle of Balcones exists within a 200 mile radius of me, and it's extremely frustrating...
