In the early 1960s, in Iondon uk we heard singing coming from a building, we went in to see what was going on, It was a folk concert, They were full but they let us in, Every one was in very casual dress, We wore suites coler and tie. We were off to the West end, The singer's were singing in dialects, Old folk songs. There were two middle aged men, Who stood out, They were A. L. Lloyd & Ewn MaCcoll, We stayed to the end of the concert. It was a great nighte.

It's a curious thing how art brings you to more art. I started with hearing Yaller Girls in The Lighthouse, then binged Blow Boys Blow, then An Evening with A. L. Lloyd. Now, I'm here learning about the man's life.
I've been a fan and collector of Bert Lloyd for about 15 years. I had no idea this documentary even existed and I'm choked and agog watching it. Thank you for posting. Do you have any information about original production, broadcast etc?
I wish there was a place to hear his Radio documentaries, a person like A. L. Lloyd comes around once in a lifetime and I’m eager to hear everything he put out story-wise
I wasn’t born in a culture or time that sung it’s own songs but hearing these it makes my yearn as if I had. It also causes a sadness in my heart that this is now all a forgotten practice. That the real england is no more.
my Dad was a friend and I visited this house the day of his Barbican memorial concert. I sat on the stairs with mouth harpist Charlie Sayles.. Apparently Anner Briggs played that day and that's what led me here..
What a great thing the Internet and RU-vid is sometimes, so programs such as this can be seen from all over. Love this stuff. Been listening to folk music for many years, including Lloyd and Maccoll but if it wasn't for RU-vid I wouldn't have seen this intresting documentary I bet. Great stuff.
Never been a fan of the finger in the ear Peter Bellemy type folk singer. Never needed to, around me in Suffolk were the real thing, traditional singers who were old horseman, labourers etc. However Lloyd seems to be the only one of the bunch to have sung in a true traditional style, closer to the genuine article than all the others, and for that I salute him.
I would hardly classify Bellamy as the “finger-in-the-ear” type. MacColl, sure, quite literally. The Young Tradition were quite opposed to that style, and The Transports is a work of genius. Bellamy’s suicide was a terrible loss to the trad world.
