Besame Mucho - Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #23: Advanced Phrase 1222

Famous bolero by Mexican composer Consuelo Velázquez was arranged in bossa nova style and recorded by João Gilberto on Amoroso album. The lesson shows the usage of advanced bossa nova phrase 1222. This phrase can also be considered a variation of second basic bossa nova phrase (1332) played without syncopation.
The greatest part of this song is played with legato, which is quite common with bossa nova songs played at slower tempo. Most of the song is played with basic bossa nova rhythmic phrases (1212 and 1213) as those are usually the phrases of choice when songs that were not composed as samba are arranged in bossa nova style.

His only two recordings that I'm aware of are TV Cultura and Aguas Claras from 1983 and unfortunately they both have very bad audio and nothing can be seen as well.

the chord on the "besameee" part is not Em7, but an Eø

Which one of the three? The only one that is Em7 is 0x543x. Other two on 'besameee' are Em7/-5 and Em9.

That for sure is a beautiful version, as most of Caetano's work. Rhythmically the accompaniment is pretty simple, you just need to play the quarter notes and I'm sure you'll be able to find the chords somewhere in Internet, so there's nothing really special that I could show here. Thanks for your suggestion anyway and if you need any help with the chords please send me a PM.

Hi. What’s the difference between 1212 and 1213?

There are 16 beats in bossa nova phrase. In 1212 you play beats 1,3,5,6,9,11,13,14 while in 1213 you play all those beats plus beat 16. In playing guitar chord accompaniment it means that you play the chord high notes (all but the bass) on the last beat of the phrase and only the bass note on the next beat (beat 1 of the next phrase). This is sometimes referred to as 'anticipating the chords'. You can find detailed explanation of this and other bossa nova rhythmic phrases on bossanovaguitar.com site. Thanks for your input.

The whole chord can be played on that 1st beat of the next phrase as well. This usually depends on whether you want to play the phrase as staccato or legato. In legato playing it is common to sustain the chord notes from beat 16 and play only the bass on beat 1, while with staccato you can play the whole chord on beat 1, though this is also not the rule (check for example staccato playing in the first part of Chega de Saudade lesson) While playing staccato, sometimes the chord on beat 16 is played as a 'ghost note' , this is shown in Outra Vez lesson. Hope that helps.
