Kirby Allison I don’t think it’s good to apply too much or even regular use of saphir cream on this pair of distinctive shoes. The aroma would be masked. I have a deerskin leather, astrakhan fur and cashmere Brioni overcoat which cost over 21k, it has very distinctive smell. You can smell deerskin, the fur and cashmere individually.

There are a small handful of leatherworkers in England who make items using Russian leather salvaged from the Metta Catharina. About twelve years ago I commissioned a bag made from this lovely Russian leather. It is been much admired, but, alas, the distinctive spicy smoky aroma fades away after a couple of years. The original cargo of leather at the bottom of the sea was en-route from St Petersburg to Genoa to be made into boots. No lives were lost in the sinking.

Thanks! The only thing I do in a pair of tennis shoes is exercise... otherwise, a pair of chukka boots would always be more appropriate and better looking... and so easy to wear!

How have you decided to polish this? With my Horween Russian Hatch shoes I have found a thin coat of paste wax (and not using any cream) heightens the grain nicely.

I remember reading about this marvellous hide in an in flight magazine, back in (I think) the late 90’s. I’ve always fancied a pair of chukka boots with a matching belt in this hide. The sight of your amazingly elegant footwear has sent me into a fever! I’m so pleased for you Kirby - I can smell them from England!

When you decided to order a Russian reindeer leather pair of shoes, what made you choose a split toe derby among the different shoe styles? Or rather what were the different shoes styles that were in your mind before you settled on a split toe derby?

I felt that the Russian really lent itself to a more casual shoe... I thought that the leather would have been mis-matched on something like an Oxford. I didn't have any derby's, either, so felt that this would be the perfect opportunity to have a pair made.

These are gorgeous Kirby. I have added interest in this leather as I was a ten year old boy growing up where this was found. I remember watching TV with great interest as they discovered it and watched the story unfold. When your back in the UK again I highly recommend taking some time out and staying in Devon and Cornwall for a few days. It’s counties are so beautiful, I think you and your family would love it down there. Quaint fishing villages and of course Dartmoor famous for the hound of the Baskerville!

I have repaired shoes and welding for over 15 years .The Goodyear welt is far better than one hand stitched in your video ,one the hand stitching ,the stitches were too big should have been about a quarter less in size .The problem with stitches of the size you use is they tend to cause to much of a wobble in the shoe you get a sideways movement .point two when I do a hand stitch welt I use a waxed thread when you pull it through the friction melts the wax this sealed the welt.

Luckily the Prince of Wales required that Cleverley not try to price gouge (nor would they ever try that, anyway). There is a small upcharge. I believe these are £3,500 vs. £2,950.

Beautiful shoes. The price must be through the roof? The choice of socks cud have been better, sumthng darker, maybe matching ur tie. Just as the color of ur shoes match the strap of ur watch. Lovely shoes nonetheless.

Must be soaking wet after all that time on the bottom of the sea 😆. I wonder if the leather becomes better because of that special treatment? Amazing story anyways.

No idea... apparently the leather does have to be oiled before they are able to make with it.

''The inner hides in most of the rolls were in a remarkable state of preservation, protected by the layers of thick mud that covered everything.

As a resident in the UK, specifically Wales... I have never heard of anything about the prince of Wales having any authority over the production of shoes. This sounds like marketing hype based on an outmoded view of the role of the monarchy (who are almost totally symbolic). Unless, HRH personally owns all the stock of this material. However, they are very nice shoes.

@@kirbyallison I am no law expert, but it sounds fishy! The Prince of Wales is his Royal title, but he owns the Duchy of Cornwall. Wales is a devolved nation with it's own Parliament (Assembly) - HRH does not rule Wales. As far as I am aware the content of wrecks belongs to the salvager unless deemed a war grave or treasure trove (in which case it would be owned by the state). I do not wish to sound argumentative as I really enjoy your channel, however this reference made me wonder about it's validity. Keep up the good work.

You haven’t said a thing about fittings etc. also it seems a bit strange that a “bespoke” shoe was delivered via mail. This and a couple of things from your story makes it look as if they weren’t bespoke but rtw or mtm at best.

George Cleverly (a representative obviously) goes to different countries throughout the year. Matter of fact, if you visit their website you'll see that they do so on a regular basis. Once they have a carving of your feet, than you can just call them up, or order a true bespoke shoe online.
