When I'm at peace, my mind would ask me,why are you relaxed? You are supposed to worry about something, then it starts creating scenarios of what might be wrong or go wrong.. that's pain!! i pray 🛐 for healing to everyone

This is so true, is there an episode that talks about this concept? I get the same feeling, it'd be nice to learn how to address this feeling. If I'm not worrying I feel like I'm neglecting my safety, but I know that's absurd

You should be able to use the methods they are talking about (which I believe they are talking about Meta Cognitive Therapy). You can not control that original thought, but you can control if you get entangled in a spiraling thought process. The reason you are so concerned about starting to worry about something is because until now, whenever that happens, it drags you into a worrying session. I would recommend looking into MCT to see if it helps.

I don’t mean to be dramatic, your videos saved my life. I have never been suicidal and I’ve been through a lot of things. An abusive marriage, 4 years in prison, etc, and through all that I’ve never been suicidal. In my most recent relationship I’ve somehow got to the point of contemplating self harm at least 3 times. I was there, I was about ready to take action, I came across your videos and you brought me back to reality. I cannot thank you deeply enough. You saved my life.

My way of reducing anxiety is to look around me. Make eye contact with what I'm anxious or fearful about. When I avoid or look down, i dont give my brain the data it needs to realize that no one is as fearful or judgmental as the thoughts make it out to be. When I look around, I actually see that other people don't even care or aren't even looking at me. When I look around, the scary monster isn't so scary for me

I called in for a sick day to my boss and informed him I was experiencing a severe panic attack (severe shaking that can spiral into a seizure, hyperventilating, speech issues, temporary impairment to drive) (I am diagnosed with CPTSD) and he proceeded to yell at me, fired me and literally called my "unreliable". THAT is a reality scenario MOST people are worried about experiencing. I have learned now how to disrupt panic attacks. Videos like this have made more of a positive, truly effective, impact on my life than wasting money at any therapist or messing up my body with any psych meds. Those people just care about money rather than helping people. I feel safer watching helpful videos like this rather than risking my life from a "licensed therapist" that has the legal power to kidnap you against your will and make more money off you through insurance claims by forcing you for long periods in a mental health facility/psych ward and forcing meds on you that may or may not work, or do permanent damage to your brain and nervous system. The true test of anxiety is letting go of the fear of death.

I am an anxiety avoider. Almost every real problem I have ever had has been caused by my avoidance. Can’t open a certain piece of mail, even though I KNOW it’s time sensitive and for sure, whatever consequence will be worsened by my delay. Or maybe it won’t actually be worsened, but I will convince myself of that in a few days so I can become even more fearful. So not only do I continue to worry about it, but I worsen the actual problem itself, sometimes. It’s a terrible place to be where you know you are hurting yourself but you still keep doing it. I’ll say “it’s Friday. I don’t want to ruin my weekend by looking at that paper. I’ll wait until Monday”. Then Monday comes and I think, well the house will be empty tomorrow so if I get really upset, nobody will be home, so tomorrow is better. Tomorrow comes and I think well, why shouldn’t I enjoy my day off? I absolutely hate that I willingly do this to myself. It’s self inflicted abuse, really.

@alyross2850 I feel such compassion for what you're experiencing as well as many others here are. I think my brother suffers from similar issues as you've described. Recently I heard Mel Robbins talk about her anxiety in a training and she talked about a "5-second rule" that kind of came to her in a desperate attempt to move forward in a very extra-depressing time in her life. She said that little rule changed her life and she moved out of her depression and eventually stopped having panic attacks and became incredibly productive in her life in a way she had never been able to be before. I have found her simple rule can launch me forward as well, and it kind of builds this momentum so I can keep moving forward productively when I'm faithful about using it (which I admit that I lapse and realize I need to start up again). I have no idea if that would help you or others, but she's got lots of videos here on RU-vid where she talks about the rule and about her life before/after. I realized that I burn so much energy with the mental/emotional avoidance and guilt of putting things off and off and off, that it was sort of liberating to try this silly little rule. It helps quickly bypass all those excuses why you can't do something before they start filling your head. I use it to launch out of bed every morning (which was how she first used it). The rule is basically this: you have a thought that you need to do something-like open your mail-and you immediately count off like a rocket launch sequence "5-4-3-2-1. Go!" You just do the thing you don't want to do. No excuses. I heard one guy say he counts 5-4-3 because those extra two seconds start his brain with excuses if he allows 5 seconds. You might try it! Sounds ridiculous, but it really was super helpful.

You described exactly one of the things that I do. And mental breakdowns almost every day. Started about a year ago. The health care provider I’ve been seeing is no help. Put me on medicine told me if I thought it was making me worse to quit medicine 😳Left me with no idea what to do. And my procrastination with these breakdowns together I can’t make decisions. It’s like my brain stops working ☹️

What I have been understanding more and more about my anxiety (social anxiety in particular) is that becoming more and more self-aware in general and particularly so while being in the grip of anxiety and understanding the whole thing more and more deeply and clearly is what makes the real difference. Call it mindfulness, acceptance, or whatever. The basis is - not fighting it, not avoiding it but simply relaxing in it, going through it, accepting it, and understanding it. And add to it the understanding that it is there for the only reason of making us more self-aware. That helps change the perception towards it. Life is all about understanding ourselves. And anxiety is nothing but a part of us. So understanding anxiety is part of understanding ourselves.

Emma, I found you a year ago when my anxiety stoped me from eating any food that causes anxiety... Like one day I woke up and poof eating disorder! Ever time I eat I feal like I can't breath... The doctors say it's mental... My therapist says it's physical I get no answer and feal like I'm going crazy. You are a tiny light in my darkness to help handle what's going on thank you so much!!!

Or try magnesium citrate if you have acid reflux. It really helped me when I had anxiety from eating because of acid reflux (it was hard for me to breathe and I felt like my throat was closing up on me because of the reflux) You could also try some magnesium glycinate to help with the breathing and relaxing. Also watch what you are eating. You might be having sensitivity to certain foods. Mine was yogurt, cheese, artificial flavors and colorings. So I stuck to natural foods I cooked and avoided canned and boxed foods.

I'd love a video on chronic anxiety after a massive nervous breakdown and ways to recover. Had a massive and my first panic attack + nervous breakdown. I was frozen for a full week could barely talk, only conciois breathing all day everyday and just sit in my garden. Now 1,5 month further and have so much anxiety (i never had before) going to inside spaces (the mall, supermarket, gym, or having to talk to people). I cant work, also suffer from CPTSD, depression and now also anxiety. Cant do anything anymore or feel joy when doing hobbys. I am doing exposure (daily) but for some reason the anxiety goes up and down and still havent managed to feel truly safe (in supermarket, gym etc)

What you've described happened to me about 3 years ago. It was horrific. I had a breakdown. Alot of things happened to me at once over a period of time and my body had had enough. Resulting in a pinnacle type event - a panic attack. I thought I was dying and was taken to ER by ambulance. All I remember was not wanting to die! Loads of tests. I was ok. But then had to recover from the breakdown. Drs tried me in antidepressants. They didn't help me. I had a lovely helpful doctor who told me that our brain is like another organ, if when hurt, requires healing. Time to heal. And it's important to give ourselves time. How long that'll be, no one can say. For me it's been 3 years and 3 months. I feel I'm making headway and I do alot of research. Heaps. Learning about how the body works. It takes the unknown away, which sort of helps anxiety to dissipate. It hasn't gone away completely but it's alot better and I'm so thankful for Therapy in a nutshell and Dr Claire Weekes (RIP) two beautiful calm people who totally get it. Just know you are not an anxious person. That's a label which only perpetuates anxiety. Rather, you have anxious times. Research brain neuroplasticity. It's very interesting and the above vid is what it's all about. The Vegus Nerve, things we can do to sooth our body. Emma is so calming and helpful. She had so many vids which are helpful. Just know, it's a journey. Healing takes time. You are not broken. You are hurt and need time to heal. You can heal.

I had this happen to me in 2021, I had a full blown anxiety panic attack in Mexico City, even went to the hospital and when I came back I had panic and anxiety every day for 3 weeks. I couldn’t go to the gym, restaurants and or drive. I was scared of my own breathing and even falling asleep. The only thing that HELPED Me was meditation. When I would get anxiety I had to sit down and listen to it, mentally go into the part of my body where I feel the anxiety coming from physically. Stop thinking because I couldn’t cure anxiety with words. I was already thinking a milling things and adding more words wouldn’t work for me. Neither was the breathing thing. I needed to sit and dive into my anxiety and it would slowly go away. I would close my eyes, and visualize going inside my anxiety and thinking oh wow this is okay. I’m okay, and it would go away.

Thank you for your video. I did the exercise regarding writing everything down that I am anxious about. I finally called the Dr. for my knee that I was so worried about. I am so afraid they are going to tell me I will need a new knee and I will never have that much money to get one. I tried to get workman's comp to help but they were useless. I did not go soon enough because I was not in pain right away. So now I am having to figure this out on my own. It has caused me so much worry and anxiety. Thank you Emma.

I have GAD and OCD so my intrusive thinking is so extreme sometimes I have intrusive thoughts that interrupt intrusive thoughts already going on in my head and I'll say a lot of your strategies work for me. It takes practice and it can take years to actually manage your anxiety, worry, and stress this way but it works. You just have to trust the process and definitely write it down. Writing things down makes a world of a difference. This won't work without writing it down because thoughts and feelings are always just in passing and fading so you won't be able to implement these healthy managing skills if you don't write it down.

I really like these ideas and plan to implement a couple. But I did want to add my two cents to one thing I disagree with vehemently. The idea that anxiety and excitement feel the same and have similar responses in the body is absolutely not true for me. When I’m excited I get “bouncy” and my whole system is up for fun. When I feel anxiety I’m completely tense and tight and my gut goes into full-on fight or flight and I get sick. Depending on the level of anxiety determines how long I’m sick for but my stomach goes into flight mode and it’s so horrible to be sick like that. I’ve had months where it’s every single day, and I’ve had times where it’s only when the anxiety goes way up, but either way my body doesn’t do that AT ALL when I’m excited. And since the top trigger for IBS attacks is stress, that’s a ginormous way that the feelings and body reactions are stark opposites from anxiety to excitement. Just needed to point that out.

I'm sorry you have to go through that. You're strong, I wish for the pain to lessen but I'm sure you can overcome whatever's on your path and become the person you want to be ❤ I thought of when I was little, and trips would make me a little nervous and a little excited. They both felt very similar: I had butterflies in my stomach, higher heart rate and just wouldn't breathe slowly. And I think if there's little excitement and little nervousness the comparison kind of works. But when it becomes a severe or chronic state, it just puts strain on the body and isn't fun anymore. I think it works both for excitement and nervousness; I think if I was excited for hours, days, months straight I'd feel sick too, wouldn't be able to eat and sleep and think properly. So, I agree, it wasn't specified well, you're right. And I'm also pleasantly happy to see how you did your research and, thus, shared some proper knowledge.. cheers for that!

How do I work through constant severe anxiety without using these coping skills and function throughout my day? My anxiety literally shuts me down: don’t eat, emotional, couch potato, calling off work, etc.

I didn’t have anxiety until My estrogen started declining I have went to many doctors They either don’t prescribe, or even have knowledge of how to treat women going through menopause I have suffered for over 10 years and they say the window is closed on me getting estrogen to help with sleep and severe anxiety and all the other symptoms I’m going through The anxiety has gotten really really bad as each year passes, and my Estrogen is down to almost nothing now

I just want to acknowledge you with compassion. I'm years post menopausal and opted against estrogen supplementation due to a history of breast cancer in my family, and my anxiety is caused by my thyroid. It's been getting worse lately as well, so I feel you in my heart. Wishing you all the best.

If any people do read my post but decide it's too long to finish reading ~ summary is this. My recommendations do not override licensed professionals advice. Alternatives exist to medical solutions. Doctors are not able to fix everything. Possible alternatives include decaf calming tea and decaf sleepy time tea. Contain chamomile and mint, plus other plant extracts. Bookend: Consult licensed professionals before adopting any of my suggestions. My suggestions cannot override a licensed professional's advice. Nor are they intended to. I may be able to offer a suggestion, not a medical solution. There are natural remedies for improving sleeping and reducing anxiety. However, I can't emphasize this enough. I'm not a primary care physician, assistant, or nurse. My recommendation will not override the advice of the above personnel for anyone who reads this and has those personnel available. In fact it doesn't qualify as a solution, unless recommended by someone's individual care provider. It is this: Decaf Calming tea with chamomile, honey, and some other plant which aids in relaxing. I add extra honey...that is a matter of personal choice. There is also a Decaf Sleepytime tea with mint, and a couple other natural plant extracts for improving sleep. There may even be a tea or vitamin-based remedy for the estrogen issue. Still needs to be discussed with a licensed caregiver...which may include a member of a medical team. Or it may not. There are alternatives to only medical solutions. Research and advice from a licensed individual is the key. Doctors still are not capable of fixing every issue.

I have the same. And I've just found my hrt patches haven't been giving me estrogen! My levels have tanked. I have huge anxiety. And my hormone dr had left the office, so I feel like I've got to start again. But, it's worth the fight to get hrt. I encourage you to seek out a hormone dr who is an integrative dr. It's important to get estrogen at any age. For protecting your bones, heart and brain. Don't give up. It's vitally important for YOU. Don't worry about anyone else, just you.

You are not alone as I suffer from severe anxiousness. Its just age talking back at us. I encourage you to keep on going but make a small change per month to keep your brain strong so to speak.

Scheduled worrying feels like it saved me. I was really struggling with a particular disappointment... one I had zero power to fix... and it was intruding on every second of my time. I couldn't get solid, restorative sleep. It was a problem. Then I heard one of Emma's videos where she said to schedule time for the worry and give yourself permission to feel the fear, disappointment and hurt just in those moments. It WAS transformative!! Now I've got to add the writing part and I'm gonna rock this so awesome. Thanks for this presentation. It's crazy helpful🎉😊

I’m currently experiencing postpartum anxiety and wake up extremely anxious and lots of intrusive thoughts. It’s hard to face when it deals with fears on your child but I am going to try and accept it and not just cope. Thank you for this. I am going to try and apply more long term solutions.

Postpartum anxiety is generally hormone related. It's important to address this.i went through it. I needed to get the hormones corrected. You might be different. But get it checked. It's been a couple of months since your comment and I'm hoping you are doing ok.

Making one good decision was my manta and helped relieve acute anxiety years ago…. build a life rather than ruminate about it…. and remember decisions don’t have to be perfect. Anxiety can be very immobilizing but decisions get you moving…(ties in with points about sustainability…..). Changing your external reality can change your internal world.

To everyone: Me too, I hear you. Sometimes all we can do is reach out to family and friends and talk about it. Sometimes it helps me to share my fears, pain and anxiety with them. They help me look at it through their eyes...it helps a bit. Only positive actions will help. Compound on the positive. Again and again and again. Good luck.

Thank you Emma, I've been pulling out the hair on my scalp since I was 11. It's 100% a way to feel relief when feeling tense. As well 100% feels like a form of grooming. It's caused me emense shame in myself, and thr shame has caused me to hold myself back in so many ways. I appreciate you bringing awareness to healing and therapy ❤️

I do think exposure to anxiety and accepting it's there is the right way, BUT(!) a ton of people with anxiety have underlying issues like trauma or a health issue that should be checked out first and worked on for the exposure to help. I personally still get anxious when highly stressed, but no amount of exposure got fully rid of my more permanent anxiety back in the day until I did a session of hypnotherapy that went back to the root cause of a lot of my worries. Since then my very occasional panic attacks have been way more survivable because my logic side stays mostly on while they happen. And I keep finding it sad how it's pointed out how most mental issues come from high stress while never talking about how that is a side effect of the system we live in. That can't be ignored.

32:59 LCSW Alan Gordon talks about applying the technique without an expectation of change. I call it having a transactional mindset. Meaning you do something with the intention and expectation of it reducing or going away. It can have a paradoxical effect where it actually increases. Mindfulness is noticing without expectation. Mindfulness doesn’t teach noticing with the expectation of something changing. We’re striving for a curious mindset, not a mindset of judgement.

I did the “ schedule worry” to my son when he told me being worry about an upcoming exam . Advised him to send away mentally the worry and ask it to come back after the exam . He came back telling me the exam was. Great and the worry “ didn t come back” after 😂 . Kids !

Im suffering. I am trying so hard to deal with my panic and anxiety. Someone suggested i use THC and i did. It helped initially but eventually it started to create more anxiety. I stopped using it 3 weeks ago when i got the flu. I was hospitalized due to dehydration and vomitting. Now i feel anxious all the time and worry i'll get sick again.

This live stream made so much sense. I was just re visiting the panic attack come down video, and this popped up. I’m really gonna try these approaches out. Having a lot of anxiety and panic attacks, they’re not fun. HRT I think is a big factor as is the menopause. Thank you for a brilliant, helpful, proactive, and positive live stream guys ❤

This video helped me so much. I only break the constant stress by scheduling stress time and learning to accept how I feel. Thank you so much for this. I look forward to stress time at 10am every morning. Honestly, learning to accept and practising mindfullness is the hardest thing ive done in my life but it works. Im getting beter at it and i can feel my anxiety getting better.

The anxiety I experience at the dentist raises my blood pressure to dangerous levels. That anxiety isn't the same thing as excitement, as suggested as sameness in this video.

Here is what I tell myself about anxiety. I imagine a jar of jelly is sitting on the shelf in the grocery store, and I see it there as I head up the aisle. This jar is like a worry that comes into my mind. I do not want to own the jelly, so I walk on by.

There are so many valuable insights in this video! I work as a therapist specializing in addiction and have really noticed how clients (and I think people generally nowadays) are looking for a mental health drug to make their uncomfortable feelings go away. I was just saying in a group yesterday how this reinforces the addictive mentality of I have to fix this feeling. We unfortunately have pathologized human emotions to the point that rather than seeing them as a signal that there's a situation that needs to be dealt with, we see them in themselves as the problem that we need to make go away.

I am a recovering addict who desperately needs to see a therapist. Your comment jumped out at me because I literally just spoke with my doctor last month about needing something for my anxiety. I've dealt with my depression but the anxiety has been debilitating. He offered benzos but I know my personality is highly addictive so I asked for buspar and he agreed. Yesterday I told my sister that I have changed my mind and was going to ask for a benzo next month. Deep down I know I don't need to go that route because I have the potential to abuse them. After watching several of Emma's videos I have realized my anxiety stems from avoiding and distracting myself constantly. I have let little situations build and build without addressing the anxiety they brought until the weight of them all has become crushing. I think I'm going to try the steps and suggestions I've learned from her videos first instead of masking my feelings with a pill. Thank you for your comment because it flipped a switch in my brain that needed to be flipped. ❤️

I worry about dying every day, I worry about my children and family dying. I thought my dad died the day he actually died which made my anxiety 10 times worse. I am seeing a therapist soon. I wish I could change the way my brain works 😢

This is the most helpful video I've found on RU-vid for what I struggle with. Everything from distinguishing what a "worry" and what "worrying" is, the threat detection system true/false threats to the puppy pooping on the Matt analogy. The problem with me is I can't seem to be able to assign 10mins of the day to let all my worries out, because my mind is always anxious.... at home, at work, during sleep 😢 and the most frustrating part is I don't know what I'm worrying or anxious about... it's like it's all in my subconscious locked up🔒and I can't access it. The unknown worrying/anxiousness affects my conscious mind also on normal day to day activities... 🤷🏻‍♂️

Aw shucks, thanks...There is a difference between education and therapy, and sometimes we need a little of both. some therapists are also very much about just listening, and others are more about education. You could ask if your therapist is able to be more directive/educational and it may help...but I'm grateful this is helpful for you :)
