Another very good practical assessment Stephan, keep up the good work, I have found you to be the go to guy for basic 4x4 everyday issues. Very timely video as I have recently been looking at updating my Navigation App as I am not happy about subscription entities, who want access to your data files and you have to pay them, I mean seriously?

Thanks, will do! Yes, I did not mention that ExplorOz need always access to your App, which is quite unusual, MMFA only while in use. If you are concerned about privacy, EOT is probably not the best.

This doesn't do it for me. the more he talks the more technical it gets. the best system to me would be .( From to destination,) for the day or whole trip. That works all over Australia EG: GPS I it takes more than 10 minutes to learn how to use it then it is Rubbish

Yes, it's technical because we go into advanced features; it's not a turn-by-turn navigation app but for off-road navigation. It sounds like Google Maps is for you; if you really go bush or remote; you will find out its limitations quickly, especially when it sends you down the garden path www.abc.net.au/news/2024-02-21/google-maps-tourists-lost-in-remote-area/103492986

Glad you made this update video, as I had ExplorOz as my top offroad map app to get due to your previous video and recommendation. I haven't bought it yet as I have my Hema HX-1 device when doing touring locally. But my plan was to get the ExplorOZ app and pay to download the maps onto my iPad just befofe I go to the Simpson Desert next year. But if it is that buggy, I'll give it a miss, and look into Memory-Maps instead. So between my Hema HX-1, iPad with Memory-Maps, and my iPhone for back-up maps (plus paper and book style maps), I should be covered for the trip. Thanks for the update. 👍 Quick question: I use an iPhone and iPad, but when it comes to laptopcs, I prefer Windows. And my Polaris head unit in my 4WD uses an Android OS. I plan to have the Memory-Maps on all these devices for back-ups and pre-planning (laptop). And if I pay for any downloadable maps on Memory-Maps on my iPad, do I have to pay for the same map(s) for each of the other devices and/or the different OS? Or just once?🤔
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 2 года назад
Good question, and I’m not sure as I never looked into that. Best to ask MM I think you get two licences with your purchase for one laptop and one mobile device. Memory Maps with Hema Map Pack is better for the Simpson than EOT IMO a better overview and more of the landmarks and campsites on them. Yes, I recon with that 3 devices, you will be good set up.

Nice review. I will certainly try MemoryMap. So far I have been using MapOut. There I have hundreds of Tracks nicely organized in Folders by Country, Activity etc. They all can be hidden or shown, imported and exported in standard GPX format. Planing of routes can be nicely done by drawing with the finger on the map. Either by following ways on the map or free form. There is also a very efficient search function which searches not only citys but almost the complete metadata of the maps. And everything of course off line. Track log is also very efficient and has a very low battery consumption (iPhone). Sure worth a try.

Once created you right click on the route if using the app or press the down arrow on route in the app and select Route Operations/Optimize Route/For Driving. Re: Memory Map: After basically getting told that the product was too old (less than 4 years old) and they would not do tech support on a paid for software, their only advice was to buy the new product and buy all the maps AGAIN! Apparently the Company president does the Tech Support (badly), so I will never buy another one of their products. IF they had sorted out the issue of non starting software on a current OS and curent (but older) software, I would have probably bought the new system, but as I basically got told to go away or buy the new offering, Not a chance that Richard Stephens (claimed company president) will ever get another penny of mine. So as a long term user, great when working; buy something else if problems. My advice is go with a better system to start with, something non subscription.
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 2 года назад
hm I don't understand your review, MM is free software, the Maps are not subscription based and I used maps I purchased 10 years ago on the new MMFA. From a development point you can't always make old versions work on new a OS that is something you need to complain to the OS developer as they make code changes which breaks old code. At some stage it does not become feasible to keep updating old versions and make it compatible. Hema did the same with the old Hema Explorer app only that their new replacement was inferior and there was no migration path between both.

Thanks Stefan I really love the new ground up designed MMfA app on iPad mini, iPhone, macbook and I wasn't aware of the refreshed app until I saw your video (was still using the original MM) ..... and I even now have it running on a Garmin Overlander too. I installed it as an Android sideload and it was actually painless to setup (I know basically nothing about Android units as I'm Apple blooded). However, the display, portability and magnetic charging and functionality of the Overlander is quite good so I'm pleased to have perhaps my favourite improved nav app in MMfA working on it too now. Cloud syncing routes and waypoints worked perfectly first time. The only downside I've found so far is I haven't found a way to export a route from MMfA to Garmin Explore directly from app to app within the Overlander unit so for now will continue to either export synced route from MMfA on iPad mini and import to Garmin Explore account on the iPad mini then sync the Overlander when internet connection is available. And for offline transfer I have found an app called Zapya works quite well on both the iPad and Overlander to directly transfer GPX files from iPad to the Overlander directly using the ipad's wifi hotspot for when there is no internet connection. Thanks again for your interesting and honest content - Steve

An informative video but I am a little confused. Are the maps in the Hema Map Pack the same maps that I use on my Hema Explorer app? If so what would be the point of paying for the map pack and using MM if you already have the same maps. Also, if you create a route on your pc, can you transfer it to your iPad?
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu Год назад
yes same maps but different better app, old Hema Explorer is a old version of MM new MM for All has many new features. Yes you can easily transfer stuff you do on PC to ipad or iphone via sync.

Memory-Map have put up the 2022 Hema maps, $99 or $49 for upgrade. The 2022 update is the same as the Hema 4WD app update just published for free, so effectively you are paying a $49 annual subscription for Memory-Map as opposed to a "once of" $99 for the Hema 4WD app. Kevin

not really knowing how many changes Hema makes I’m happily stay on the older version for a few years. If you always want the latest maps you obviously have to pay but no real need to do so.

@@AlloffroadAu I have a old version of Hema maps I use on Oziexplorer & updated ones on iOs Hema 4WD app. The point I am trying to make if you are only after up to-date Hema maps it is better value to have the Hema 4WD app(once of cost) rather then Memory-Map(paying for updates)
@AlloffroadAu

I see, that has Pro's and Cons many users, including myself, were very upset after Hema 4x4 some time ago updated the maps with their new sanitised version without warning, I still also use the 2015 Hema maps on MMFA as it has a lot of station and older tracks now erased from Hema Maps. Given MM also stopped development of the old App, I think the Hema 4x4 will soon be obsolete.

Thanks for the detailed review, two things that can't work out (1) if I buy the HEMA maps can I use them on iPhone, iPad and my Mac at the same time? (2) if I buy the HEMA maps through MMFA and decide later I want to change to another app do I need to buy them again or do I own a license to the HEMA maps? Cheers

Yes to number one it's a single user licence so as I understand you can use it on any of your own devices. I don't think you can use the maps in different apps unless they support MM maps.

Went to get the topo25 map as a test. I get a page doesn't exist error when trying to pay. Not a good start and won't have me spending $100 with them when I can't do a $50 one. If they can't get the purchase part right, what's the chances their focus on the functionality I actually need is any better. Shame I was ready to drop for the whole lot. I'd previously looked at hema maps for Android and saw lots of posts from unhappy users. I was hoping things had improved. Like last time ill be giving it another miss. Seeing others have the same issue above is even less encouraging. Kudos on the video though.

@@AlloffroadAu latest iPad mini 6, it wouldn’t download the full Australia topo 250, it just locks up. Very strange, if you manually scroll around, you are using online maps. If you have a Laptop or desktop, you can download all maps there, put them on an SD card and then import them to an iPad that's how I got my 40GB of Map data to 5 devices. I did find that sometimes download speed from MM servers varies quite a bit best to do it at home on a fast internet connection. Make sure the first search is done with an internet connection.

I was definitely going to download the explore Oz app because you seem to like and recommend it, I have a hema hx 1 and found it so useless I had to get my paper maps out and threw the whole device out the window, charger and all. Explore Oz asked you to do a review, you recommended it, now hema are paying you and you recommend them now
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 2 года назад
Hm, ExplorOz never asked me to do a review. However, I spent quite a bit of time advising them free of charge and giving them tons of improvement suggestions in the hope the app could get to a level where I like it, as the maps are great. When I did the review, the app was relatively stable, and I had not to many issues besides the shortcomings I mentioned. But we are talking about software, so any update or change can break an app, and unfortunately, EOT had many updates and issues, as you can see. Hema never paid me, by the way, are you referring to MemoryMaps? Memory Maps paid me as a consultant to improve their new Memory Map for All app, and many of my suggestions are implemented. They never paid me for a review. Not to mention that I have always used Memory Maps or the old Hema 4x4 App (which is Memory Maps) as one of my favourite and most stable apps for the past 11 years. If you want me to stick to my opinions and outcomes even if things change, I, unfortunately, can't help you. Software Development is a fluid thing, and things change. Look at Hema, the Hema 4x4 app was a good app; Hema Explore at the end (after quite some issues at the beginning) was a good app. They moved to Hema 4x4 Explore, which isn't very good in my book. Things change, mate; that's life, and I called it as I saw it at the time hence I always mention the version number in my reviews. I think nearly every GPS Navigation app on a tablet, especially EOT and MMFA is better than a Hema HX1.

I would also not spend money on Hema besides the Maps through MemoryMaps. Since the old folk handed Hema over to their kids, it all went downhill. They lost me when they stopped supporting the good older Hema Explore app and had it not working for six months after OS updates yet charged subscription money, the new Hema 4x4 Explorer is just a mess, and I'm not sure they can get my trust back again. As I said, I still use Explor Oz and like the maps, especially for exploratory drives. I wish they could get it reliable and fix the existing usability issues.

Timely release, was about to pull trigger on EOT this weekend based on your previous recommendation, just couldn’t decide on new cellular iPad or just an external GPS. My concern with MM is anything that is free is not sustainable for development and support
@AlloffroadAu

MM is on the market for over 10 years while the app is free in reality you need maps, to import maps you need a paid Navigator version and they earn money on map purchases so that would be of no concern
