△About Off-Track Family:
We are a family of 4 with 2 children. We are overlanding for years now on wild tracks in our Land Rover Defender 110.
Our expedition vehicle is a Land Rover Defender camper conversion. Some people say it’s more like a bug out vehicle but for us it’s the perfect 4wd off-road tourer with best 4x4 camping set-up.
We bought this 4wd rig brand-new in 2009 and the engine is the 2.4 tdci Puma version. We transformed it time after time in a real overland 4x4 touring camper and it’s now a perfect off-grid truck for wild camping, bivouac, or simply as an overlanding Defender.
We love enjoying time in nature and exploring the world as a family.

Nous sommes une famille de 4 dont 2 enfants. Nous voyageons depuis des années sur les pistes dans notre Land Rover Defender 110.
Notre véhicule d’expédition est un Defender aménagé. Certains le décrivent plus comme un véhicule de survie mais pour nous c’est le parfait compromis d’aménagement 4x4 et tout-terrain pour le camping.
Nous avons acheté ce véhicule neuf en 2009 et sa motorisation est un TD4 2.4 tdci Puma. Nous l’avons transformé jour après jour en un parfait tout terrain de camping 4x4 et il nous permet d’être autonomes lors d’un bivouac, d’un voyage 4x4 ou simplement lors d’un voyage en famille.
Nous adorons passer du temps dans la nature et explorer les pistes sauvages du monde entier en famille.

Hi! Congratulations on the video first. We are 5 of us (2 adults and 3 children) and we also choose to sleep in the jeep. Only the 2 oldest sleep inside the jeep. The youngest sleeps in the tent with us. Thanks for sharing.

we use for a long time oztent rv 4. Now we have a offroad caravan. And when i go onley with my dog we sleep in the Discovery. Thank you for this nice video

@@offtrackfamily www.exklusiv-caravan.de/ It is not a real off roader. Eriba Touring but the only normal caravan with a roll cage. This caravan is much stronger then a normal one. So this is not bad but you cannot compare with the real offroader caravans from Australia. We drive a lot in Sweden the gravel roads there with it.

I believe the Alu-Cab Icarus allows you to keep the backseats and have a bed up top that flips up for interior standing room. That looks like a good option. Adults sleep up to with a platform bed below for the kids.

It s a good option yes! But i think not especially suitable for us as we would still need to keep our interior wooden layout for kids bed & storage. Of course, to think about 😉. Have you seen a family with this kind of setup?

The other option I've recently been doing to be discreet in urban areas is using the roof top for storage when I am entering urban areas or hostile no wild camping areas like in the UK. I sleep in the interior and use the roof for storage and cover the windows. Then when I enter freindly areas or wild areas I put the storage boxes back in the 4x4

It's a nice solution and great to have more than one option for sleeping. Unfortunately, this isn't possible for a family.

I'm looking for possibilities to overland with the family of 5. So far we have used a fairly big tent (quechua air seconds 5.2 xl). However as you said, it has it's disadvantages. Needs a place to set up. Takes time to set up. And most annoying of them all: You have to set up all the sleeping gear (mattresses, pillows etc etc). I'm not a fan of trailer, because it's expensive and I don't the hassle when I have to turn around in a dead end at the woods or mountain road. I'm looking at the roof top tents, but there are few RTT's in a world, that house 5 people. And almost none of them in europe:( Haven't considered getting to tents though. Will look in to it. That means of course x2 price and x2 set up time. But still probably faster then setting up a tent+all the sleeping-gear.

Thanks a lot for your message. It does become more complicated above 4 in a family. I do understand you don't want the hassle of a trailer, especially when living in Europe. It's all about compromises! Also children growing up, it's good to think long term before investing because, as you wrote, it does cost a good amount of money. Let us know when you found the best solution for a family of 5 :)

@@Bradfordo might not be the best place. Clearly no in our Defender. Some people add small bunk beds in their hard shell RTT but only good for toddlers.

Hi there. This video is great! Just what I needed. 3 quick questions. 1. I assume that the grey board that sits behind the second row seats was just custom made by you? 2. Do you support the board when it is folded, or does it just rest on the folded down seats? 3. Where did you get the shelf that folds down from covering the rear left load space window? Thanks for your message! Really happy it helps :) The interior wooden set-up that converts into a double bed was made by Aménagement 4x4, a french manufacturer specialized in 4x4 conversion. May I ask a question on the children’s access please? I can see you have the NAS step on the crossmember - but the children’s bed is very high and close for the door, any tips on what helps them get in and up and down and out ?

Thanks for your message! They just climb in, the ladder on the side might help, & they learnt to get out back facing outdoor. We still have to open or close the back door when they're in bed as it's heavy.

Not all pics are in Switzerland. When in Switzerland we mostly camp in the mountains and don't stay more than one night in the same place (=bivouac). No permits required.

Hmm, that is nothing new. I thought you would have some more detailled layouts. But your experiences are quite good. Why did you choose a defender and not a land cruiser?

In Switzerland the available versions of Land cruiser are not good. For example you can't buy a GRJ76 or 79 with the V8 diesel engine. So in 2009 we were hesitating between jeep wrangler, land rover defender and nissan patrol. We don't regret our choice after more than 12 years.

@@offtrackfamily I have one point more. If i go on holiday and travel around then i am not very often two nights on the same spot. So i decided, dont waste time mit building up your camp in a long period of time. As faster as better. Is also a big point for the decision of the setup and the car!

It was the case with almost all kids bedding in the rtt, we just couldn't add the inflatable mattresses as too much pressure to close down the rtt. We are now building a brand new set up after more than 10years with this one.
