Siatica is the worst, it was like tooth ache ×100 it's was that painful at times, I thought I was gonna pass out and I can take pain, I had broken bones before and even that wasn't as painful, I feel for anyone suffering with this, may Godbless you and take your pain away 🙏
I don’t remember which video I saw it in, but laying on your bed on your side with a pillow in between your legs and getting in the fetal position instantly takes the pain out of the area. When I overwork myself, it works like a charm. And by overwork mean, I got up to go to the bathroom or get a drink that’s all I did and I’m in severe pain
@@jc238My go-to is face down on my bed with my legs extended straight and my feet hanging over the edge. If I put a fresh lidocaine patch on my lower back, I get about three easy minutes on my feet - it just washes through me but then goes away. Those patches are supposed to last 12 hours! Works out to about $1 a piece at Walmart. Sometimes if I've had a patch on for a few hours, I'll lay flat on my back, and the contact is good, and I feel a short surge of relief. I can't wait until this nightmare is over.
Now, this is what I'm looking for! (Not long ago, the only vids that showed in my search were what not to do. One quick and thoughtful reply took me to a playlist, and this video is just golden to me!) I can do the hanging/supporting from a walker, and I can also hug the side of the bed of my pickup. Today I was able to stretch out lying in the sun on the folded-down tailgate. I'll take my relief where I can get it! My most comfortable position right now is flat on my belly with my legs extended and my feet hanging over the edge of my bed. It's difficult because all the advice says it's important to keep moving, but that's nearly impossible when I can't fully extend my left leg without the pain screaming down my leg. The PT today actually apologized he didn't help me feel better. Follow up with my doctor tomorrow. Pain management doctor can't see me for a month.
Hi David, We’re thrilled to hear that you’ve found our sciatica playlist to be so helpful! 🎉 It’s wonderful that you’ve been able to try out different methods like using the walker and the tailgate for support. Finding relief in any form is such a big win! It sounds like you’re making the best of a tough situation by finding positions that bring you comfort, even if it’s just lying on your belly with your feet hanging over the edge of your bed. We understand that it’s frustrating when moving and stretching are painful, and it’s encouraging to hear that you’re still exploring options to ease your discomfort. We’re also grateful that you shared your experience with us. It’s important for us to know how our resources are making a difference. We hope your follow-up with your doctor goes well and that you find some effective solutions soon. Thank you for your kind words and for being a part of our community. These are great. Ty. Ty you also for not downplaying sciatica. So many doctors say oh yeah sciatica, thats can be uncomfortable. Nope painful! Like that makes it hurt less...lol
Hi Ty. This was the first video that I questioned. Being in my 60s, I am unsure how safe it is to hang from a bar or invert. I did these things in my youth, and often had unintended pain, such as shoulders and arms. I do not believe either of these should be attempted without supervision, preferably a medical professional. Otherwise, I love your content and appreciate all the good information you provide.
I had knee replacement surgery 7 weeks ago and have developed horrible sciatica pain, I think from sitting in the recliner too much during my recovery. I go to a physical therapist on Friday, but I’ve been trying to educate myself on the best ways to treat this before then. Your exercises seem more common sense to me - not a lot of aggressive stretching, etc. It makes sense to me that muscle weakness could be a cause because I haven’t been moving much at all. I wish I could do the exercise that’s on your knees, but I’m not quite ready for that yet. Thanks for putting this great info out there. I’m hoping it helps.
I have had sciatica for exactly one year and the first four months was excruciating pain; my knee started giving out within the third week and I have fallen four times , resulting in four fractured metatarsals and a compression fracture on my L1. I used a walker for about seven months and am now using a cane, simply because of the buckling knee. Would these exercises help with this problem?
Hey G, we're so glad that the other exercises aside from the hanging have helped you. Sciatica pain is no joke and we hope you feel continued relief. In case you are interested we have a sciatica playlist that could be beneficial for your recovery. You can access it here: "Sciatica Pain Exercises and Stretches" ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1maZPQPPtirn4oxj8oCPuIMR
What’s a SHRUG?? Hi. Many thanks for this video. It has helped immensely with my sciatica. Could you please just explain in a bit of detail exactly what a shrug is and how to do it correctly? ❤😊
I'm trying to get off opioids & pregablin, but my pain levels are making it so hard. I have severe sciatica, disc shortening in L1 - L5, bone marrow edema, nerve damage and osteoarthritis, I'm only 34 and a single mum of 2 young children. My mental health suffers greatly from my physical issues. I wish there were a long term, permanent fix for us all 😢
If either of you can manage it, find a good physical therapist to go to once a week. I'm on my second sciatica attack. The first was when an MRI revealed spinal stenosis ... the M.D. at my PT clinic gave me a single shot of cortisone and lidocaine. This too away enough pain that I could work on strengthening the muscles that support my back, and all the pain went away as I got stronger. The reason for attack #2 is simple. As part of recovery from a surgery, my PT gave me a back twisting exercise and I overdid it ... boom! But this time we both know what to do ... the videos on this channel are good, but not a substitute for in-person therapy. I'm using the videos to refine what I'm working on in the clinic, and my sciatica is going away - slowly, because nerves heal slowly, but I am getting better. By the way, I'm 66, on no pain meds, and overall strong and healthy. If I can do it, you can too!
Thank you so much, this video is really helpful! I have a question: My sciatic pain is getting better with these exercises and recommendations but walking outside is very painful. I was told to keep walking even if it hearts. Is this right or aggravating the situation?
Hi Angelina, You are very welcome! We appreciate you tuning in. In case you are interested we have a playlist for Sciatica Pain help. You can access it here: "Sciatica Pain Exercises & Stretches" ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1maZPQPPtirn4oxj8oCPuIMR We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care! 🧡
Suffering right now, especially in the morning. Cat cows help a ton and have the same effect as the shrug, if you cant stand for more than a minute like me. I get crazy pain in my leg after standing or walking for more than a minute atm. Its gonna be a long road to recovery 😔
Hi. If I’m in agony in foetal position does that mean it’s not sciatica? I’m pretty sure I have it from glutes/piriformis as no pain in lower back but lying in bed is so painful I can’t sleep. The weight of one leg on the other even though nerve only painful on one side is making side sleeping impossible even with pillow. Help! Desperate for sleep!!
I am a T5-T6 complete para. I have some issues with my L3-L4 area with Sciatica Pain. Now I should not be feeling anything below my break line but this I can feel. Which leads me to believe it is quite severe. When I lay down in bed within 20 minutes one of my legs start spasming. It does not matter how i lay, prone either side still spasms. If I get up and sit back in my chair the spasms subside. They want to give me an epideral or nerve blockers which i decline to do. Alas my sleeps are getting quite rough. I was wondering if you have nay exercises for my condition and perhaps could you do a video with my condition in mind to show other exercises? Thank You for Any Help.
Sorry to hear that I have pretty bad spasm down the leg and was much better with pregabalin it’s a pretty safe medication is it the nerve blocker u referred ?
Thank you so much for all the useful videos on sciatica, you have helped me a lot!! The stretching against the door shown in this video feels soooo good :) I have been struggling with this pain for the past 6 weeks (mostly in my calf, a terrible terrible pain), but it seems it is slowly improving. However, I have just noticed that the ankle of my affected leg is quite swollen, which is something I hadn't noticed before but I suspect it has been like that for a while (I simply did not not notice it, although the ankle has always felt very weak and very sore). Doctor, is this normal and will it go away once I recover completly? I am a 56 year old lady and quite active, and never suffered of swollen feet or ankles before sciatica. Thank you!
Hi Emc, we're so sorry to hear about the pain you've been enduring for the past 6 weeks due to sciatica issues. The pain can be relentless and it makes every task more difficult. We hope you feel better soon! It's great to hear that the stretching exercises from our videos have been helpful to you! While swelling in the ankle is not typically associated with sciatica, ankle weakness can be a symptom. However, we can't say for sure without a proper evaluation. We highly recommend consulting with your healthcare professional to discuss this issue further. It's essential to address any new symptoms or concerns to ensure proper treatment and recovery. We wish you all the best on your journey to recovery and hope to hear about your progress soon! 🧡
I feel like a majority of my sciatic pain comes largely from my legs and glutes not being sufficiently stretched. I do have herniated discs, but being a very active skateboarder, I am HORRIBLE at stretching. Guys in general we don’t do much stretching. I can barely pull my left leg up to 45 degrees while lying down. My suggestion to most folks too would be to progressively stretch while not causing pain. Light warm ups before hand help to increase range of motion.
I was on a decompression table at the chiropractor’s office for approximately 5 to 7 minutes at the same angle you showed. I found that the decompression table cause the sciatica to get worse. Is that a possibility or did I do something wrong?
I almost did not watch this video because the Therapist looks so sloppy in jeans and an un-tucked shirt (as so many people do today). Out of desperation I watched and was impressed he seemed intelligent and informative. I am going to try the inversion hanging and the shrugging against wall. He gave several tips that other have not.
Who cares about dress code if the therapist is so knowledgable, experienced, compassionate, selfless, friendly and kind? Many thanks Dr David for excellent video's that have already helped me very much. You are appreciated and loved across the world. Greetings from South Africa.
Hey Slavka, These techniques can also be helpful for bulging discs. We have a playlist on RU-vid that would be more suited for bulging discs. You can access it here: "Herniated Disc Help" ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1mYk59Nn77n3t_dh4DeJaWVRe We wish you all the best in your road to recovery!
Hey M Lynn! Sciatica can cause numbness below the knee. Here is a great playlist we have on sciatica help 😊 "Sciatica Pain Exercises & Stretches" ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1maZPQPPtirn4oxj8oCPuIMR
It's the middle of the night, and I'm in so much pain I can't get comfortable. I just tried every one of these movements except the shrug, and I got zero relief. Trying not to cry, here, but I just can't figure out what to do. 😓
The fetal position did not work for me it made it worse at night. I've had this for over a year not getting any relief now I am coughing and it hurts so bad when I cough. And I can't use my knees to do the exercises because I've had knee operation so what now besides just want to go away I'm in such pain.
