I'm not saying you're wrong about cotton at all I would trust your knowledge and wisdom over mine any day but since they switched from cotton socks to these so-called moisture wicking socks my feet sweat worse than those kind of socks than they ever sweat and cotton socks and it's hard to find pure cotton socks anymore I feel the same way about t-shirts those polyester materials and rayon materials actually make me sweat I don't know if it's just my skin they do not feel breathable to me especially the socks I will take cotton t-shirts all day over anything you are right they do stay wet but at that point I will just change to a fresh t-shirt... I could not agree with you more about long sleeves I always wear long sleeves even in the summer especially camping.... I can't explain the thing with the sock phenomenon maybe you have some insight lol

My Rocky Boots have a vibram sole. Lol.. I have the 6-in legacy but they also make an 8-in legacy I'd like to have a pair they're a little bit higher up the ankle...go with the vibram don't cheat your feet 😂

Thank you for another great video. I have a Wool Rich button up shirt that is over 45 years old. I remember thinking I am spending 35 dollars on one shirt! It had better last. I'm still wearing it. It is not as nice next to my skin as my Marino wool t shirts but it still looks great and keeps me warm with out reeking. You always look so fashionable. Me not so much. Thrift stores and consignment stores are really great and I have found really pricey items for very little. If I find we need more warm clothing on a trip we get them at a thrift store. When I go backpacking and use public transportation to get there I will usually purchase something from a thrift store for the trip home. You can always donate clean serviceable clothes to lighten your load too. We always bring a watch or scull cap and a sun hat. I carry an umbrella both for sun protection and shade. Thank you again for putting this video together. Safe travels.

Hey Anita! Congrats on having a shirt that is older than you 😉😃 You never know what will turn out to be a success story, right? I 100% agree with you about thrift stores. When I backpacked around the world many years ago, I did the same thing - stock up on clothes in thrift stores because you know you can spend your money elsewhere, right? I like your style! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to chat ☺️

Excellent - VERY helpful and funny! Agree about shopping at thrift stores, Leslie, as well as wool socks (Smartwool brand - $15/pair, but they last a long time) and Vibram soles (I won't get up on my roof or hike or walk on ice or snow without them). And thanks for a simple run down on fabric types.

I own a single dress that is casual and packable. thats it for "dressy". I'm not a dress up girly girl anyway. I love layers; not bulky things. I have 2 pairs of linen blend shorts that I absolutely love. They do wrinkle easily but they are very "airy". I knit my own wool socks! I've heard that Merrill Moab hikers are good. What "model" hikers are your? If they were the brown ones in the pic, I really like the look of those. Never heard of Beezys sandles.

Thank you very much! This was very helpful. Most of what I have is 100% cotton. Looks like I need to do some shopping before I hit the road. I love the fact that you gave fabric types instead of name brands. I've been looking at "camping/hiking" clothes online and they are incredibly expensive. $100 for a hiking skirt or pair of pants, NO Thanks! I took notes....very useful! Thank you .
@TheVanThatGotAway
@TheVanThatGotAway 3 года назад
Hi Barbara! I'm glad you found that useful. Yes, it's not always necessary to take out a loan just to put clothes on your back, right? Any kind of clothing, as long as it's made of the right fabric, will probably do a good job for you when you're camping. You can always upgrade to the pricey stuff if you find you need to. 😀

I disagree with her. 100% cotton BREATHES. Cotton/poly blends less so. I can tell if I sleep in a tee shirt what it is made of by how hot I get. You are going to be living around a lot of plastic, why wear synthetic clothing? I do like my nylon pants. They repel water and wind. Wish they had all the pockets hers has. Lightweight, washable wool would be great if you can afford it or find used. Also look at men's pants. POCKETS in men's pants are awesome! Deep, plentiful and back pockets often have buttons or velcro for security. No need to carry purse when in town and your phone and a bunch of other stuff is secure.

P.S. I have a pretty great REI pants story from today: I have a pair that I’ve had since literally, the turn of the century. Patched multiple times, in multiple places, they finally failed-the zipper gave out. I bought these pants when REI gave a lifetime warranty so while going to the store to pick up an online order, I took my old, tattered shorts. The manager said they were too far gone to repair bit offered my a full refund which I promptly spent on a new pair.🌿

@TheVanThatGotAway 3 года назад
Omg, Hope, I spit out my coffee laughing at the thought of you bringing some threadbare, patch-filled shorts into REI and the mgr like "What the heck? How OLD are these??" A warranty's a warranty, though. Good work!

REI also has used clothing and gear for sale. REI and Campmor, both started out as mail orders catalogs. In the 1970s, they were about the only way to get camping and backpacking gear with out driving a long way. In 2011, I visited REI in Seattle, Washington, that was the 1st time I had ever been in one of their stores. They looked up my membership from the 1970's and sent me a new member card. Now there is a store with in 36 miles of our house. I'm glad it is not any closer! I could spend a lot of money in there, upgrading clothes and equipment.

Thank you Leslie for sharing this great tips. I have too much clothes so even just Vanping for 3 nights and 4 days I end over packing same thing with my food I bring to much. My question are how many clothes and shoes did you bring the hiking boots the washable cute brown one. Do you have flip flops or sandals for summer weather. And where do you put them Thanks take care😊
@TheVanThatGotAway
@TheVanThatGotAway 3 года назад
Hi Lilynor! You and I have the same overpacking affliction, LOL!! But I definitely toned it down. I picked a small case to hold all my clothes. In there I carry about 5 shirts, 3 or 4 pants, socks and undies😉 For my shoes, I roll with my hiking shoes, the Bezees sandals and some flip flops for hanging out at camp. I store them in a shoe holder that I hung on the back of the passenger seat. Very convenient. I show it off in my full van tour video. Thanks for asking and thanks so much for being here!🙂

Hi Peg! The well-respected Darn Tough brand makes a CoolMax polyester/nylon/spandex blend sock that has cushion on the sole and reinforced heel & toe. I haven't tried them yet, as when I was trying synthetic socks, I wore Thorlos which have since deteriorated in quality in my humble opinion. If you give 'em a shot, let me know what you think, okay?
