Thank you so much for speaking out against Spyglass, it's really cool to hear. What they did to Melissa Barrera is outrageous. My favorite horror movie of the year is a french one called Gueules Noires, I don't know if its going to get a US release but I highly recommend it! Incredible practical effects and really good premise. French genre cinema was very strong this year, Animal Kingdom, Vincent Doit Mourir and Vermines are really films to watch.
Thinking that Exoricst Believer is in anyway okay is beyond me.. That film was trash from start to end, it's dreadful. I think in reality, we will never get Horrors as good as The Omen, The original Exorcist and the 3rd on in the franchise. I basically think that this generation is dumber because everything is done for them. We know to much now so we have very limited imagination. People are running out of ideas so they have to revert back to other decades like Joker, Strange Things and Fear Street 94. I mean the last briliant monster flick I've seen was Jeepers Creepers and the 2nd one as very good too. I thought the Conjuring was basically bordering on a bore-fest. I'm going to keep watching to see what films you think are very well done.
Okay, to know that you think Scream 6 or whatever it's called is good tells me that none of your top 5 films are going to be my cup of tea. I think All the Scream films are absolute utter garbage along with The Blair Witch Project which I thought was a joke. I'm just going to have to accpet that it's going to be very hard for me to find a modern horror film that will impress me. Maybe I've seen it all already and they can't go any further with horror.
5:02 “This one fell really flat, and to be honest, I think it’s the children’s fault. Ironically, because there’s something wrong with the children… they’re not believable” LMAOOO 😂
I personally really enjoy movies like “Happy Death Day“ or “Freaky” but they have that thing where they don’t take themselves too seriously, and with “It’s a wonderful knife” I was so irritated because it was so serious (maybe except for Justin Long’s performance). And I agree that it was really bad. But I think it could’ve been so much more fun if they just went with another tone
@@ManiacalMangoes Horror comedies have been a thing since at least the 70s. They are great when done right but most of these new one just don't hit right.
I enjoy the horror/comedy genre in general and I like Happy Death Day, but then I was surprised when time travel “your day repeats like Groundhog Day” specifically became a subgenre rather than a single movie franchise.
When I watched Saw X in the theater, I was actually alone, no one else in there, just me. It was incredible! I 1000% share the love you have for this movie :)
I watched saw x with my boyfriend i enjoyed the movie so much and i thought it was ironic that my boyfriend is Mexican and its in mexico. But i felt so bad because he HATES horror movies but I LOVE horror and it was my turn to pick a movie. He hid behind be in the movie theater ( he his his face behind my head)
100% agree on Saw X. Got back to the original premise and was really well done. I always love your ranking videos- I appreciate all the hard work you put into them!
I loved Talk to Me & Thanksgiving, very gruesome. I love the originality of the films. At least for me, I can say they weren't movies I've seen 10x over. 🎬 🎞
Talk to me surprised me. But I was captivated by it and it kept my attention wondering what gonna happen next. I love that there wasn’t any cheap jump scares. Hate that
I love seeing difference of opinions between us! Personally I thought knock at the cabin was boring and they could have done so much more with it! But I am happy some people enjoyed it like you
Sometimes I get interested in movies she disliked. I added It's a Wonderful Knife on my to-be-watched list after she said it's like Final Girls and Happy Death Day
I don't agree with a lot of her reviews, horror movies are very subjective that way. I loved Renfield, Megan, and No One Will Save You. Haven't seen Missing yet but I really liked Searching. I mostly watch these videos to see what movies I may have missed, like I had never heard of It's a Wonderful Knife, but it looks fun
My favorite horror movie this year was "When Evil Lurks". It received such good reviews, I went to see it in the theatre first. I then rewatched it on shudder and felt like I was watching it for the first time because I had missed so much of the movie from closing my eyes in the theatre. It is such a fresh take on horror it has become a classic "go to" movie for me. Thanks for the 2023 ranking, there are several movies you recommended I hadn't seen I will now check out.
I agree and I share the same feelings Sarah has about not wanting to watch kiddos die. I feel like I had to watch When Evil Lurks to kind of know if I could deal with that aspect.
I didn't realize that was one of Sarah's bottom lines with horror. There is nothing wrong with taking care of yourself wrote the man who cries at every King Kong remake and who had to take a survey amongst his friend's if he could handle the animal cruelty to Godzilla in the new Japanese film. @@mulletjunky
@@kayenicolle Sarah said she didn't watch When Evil Lurks and she doesn't plan to anytime soon because of the trigger warnings. Honestly, I don't blame her. That movie is depressing af.
2 movies I haven’t heard anybody talk about yet from 2023: Dark Windows- A slow burn slasher/revenge movie with a nice twist and a very dark ending. Worth a watch. Malicious- Heavily inspired by Funny Games. A rapid paced, fun movie with some intense scenes. Again, very dark themed movie.
I'm so proud of the directors behind Talk To Me, the RackaRacka boys, Aussie icons over here. My first memories of them were their Ronald McDonald horror comedy skits back when I was in high school, and seeing them with an acclaimed horror, for A24 no less, brings a tear to the eye. This reminds me of when James Wan and Leigh Whannell first made Saw. 2 Aussie boys with an idea and now look at them. I can't wait to see what the Philippou's do next!
Possessedbyhorror: i didnt get to see them all. Me: oh that’s fine! What did you only get to see like 12 or something? Possessedbyhorror: I did get to see 32. Me: -blinks as I stare at my hands- how many horror movies came out holy moly
Did you see Beau is Afraid? What did you think? I saw it in the cinema when it came out and i haven't been able to make my mind up on whether i like it or not 😅
I don't mind the comedy horror movies...Happy Death Day, Renfield, etc, but It's a Wonderful Knife was by far the worst of this genre I've seen. If not for Justin Long it would have been unwatchable.
Yeah the FNAF movie had to walk a very fine line of catering to existing video game fans but still being accessible to people going into the movie blind. I think it did a pretty good job and I LOVE how much practical effects and costumes/suits were real versus CGI. I really hope we get some more movies out of the franchise because you can really feel the passion and love that was put into it. More importantly, I hope between FNAF and the Barbie movie that studios will realize that audiences actually like being able to see what is happening in movies and enjoy colors outside of dim to dark
Fr, I think that this movie was more for like, the fans, because going blind you wouldn't enjoy the little details like Balloon Boy, or it would seem stupid the animatronics possessed by children, but I think they did an incredible job with balancing it
I personally think the movie needed more violence, and I was a bit put off from the changes to the story, but the original timeline would be too confusing for beginners and basing the entire movie just purely off the first game would be a bit boring.
Agree with your opinion on M3gan. Before watching it, I remember seeing people say that the kid was a brat. I watched it and didn't understand why people said that, she watched both of her parents die in a car crash. Did you expect her to act like everything was all sunshine and rainbows?
The irony of the Eli Roth situation is that he’s outright doxxing people on his page, and Spyglass doesn’t seem to have a problem with his social media habits - yet Melissa was fired for simply standing up against genocide. Disgusting tbh.
I can't believe you didn't even mention WHEN EVIL LURKS! This for me was by far the best horror movie I've seen in a loooong time. Everything about this film was amazing. The sound, the colour pallet, the dark hues. The absolute gut wrenching of at least 2 things that happened that shocked me to my core. I can't believe 😢this movie was so easily brushed off when it was probably greater than every other film mentioned. 😮
That shit wrecked me and it took me about a week to recover from how disturbing it was. Definitely the best one this year. But I don't want to watch it again
I know, I think that Talk to Me was more disturbing to me and worse with that scene with the kid👀 when evil lurks didn’t stick with me as much, more enjoyable and I would probably rewatch it before I’d rewatch talk to me😭
@@PossessedbyHorror My hard-core vegan/animal champion friend saw the same review you must have seen that made her nervous about watching it. But we watched the movie together and it wasn't at all as bad as the review made it out to be.
If you watched Pet Cemetery and Evil dead you can definitely watch When Evil Lurks. It is not A Serbian film or Cannibal Holocaust. You are missing out on a really good movie
Influencer and Birth/Rebirth were my favorite releases from Shudder this year. Loved the twists and turns in Influencer and Birth/Rebirth was a great take on a Frankenstein-style tale. Thanksgiving and Totally Killer were my favorite slashers 🪓🔪. And my favorite horror film from 2023 isn’t technically a horror film; it’s a creature feature but the scenes with the creature were thrilling and terrifying… and that’s Godzilla Minus One 🦖
godzilla minus one was the closest thing this year to a masterpiece!! i feel like it could be categorized in any genre, but the monster and horror scenes were incredibly done.
I thought When Evil Lurks is your #1 but got disappointed when it was Saw X, I like the movie but to me it was just meh probably at #8 Evil Dead Rise should be at top 3
I would like to add Nefarious as one of my top picks. I love movies with a lot of dialog. Sean Patrick Flannery did a great job at that duel role, and he stayed in character the whole way through. The movie did a great job of keeping me entertained while literally taking place in just one setting.
Can you please review Lake Mungo (2008)? It's very controversial and I'm curious how you'd rate it ! Some people say it's the scariest movie they ever saw, others say they don't even consider it as horror. Personally, I think it's one of my top horror movies of all time, right after Pulse 2001 (the Japanese one).
I totally agree with Lake Mungo. Fantastic movie!! It was a real gut punch for me and plays out in a completely original and multi layered way. I'd definitely place it in my top 3. The final act is strangely difficult to watch and definite nightmare fuel so I'd certainly place it in the horror category!
Knock at the Cabin was one of the worst for me this year. I wanted to like it so badly, but I was disappointed. I love the book and I feel like Shyamalan didn't do it justice.
M. Night Shyamalan movies are usually mid to terrible. I was genuinely shocked when she said she loves his movies and there's only one she didn't like. Six Sense (obviously amazing), signs was good with a TERRIBLE weakness given to the Aliens, why would they land on a mostly water world then? Slit was good however the 1st movie Glass was a good idea but only a ok movie for me. Everything else was just bad with dumb unsessery twists. He always wants to say something with his films it seems but honestly just isn't talented enough. It seems like he blew all his magic out the gate and nows he's just chasing that Dragon.
This year I've started EMDR (trauma therapy) which means I haven't really been able to watch much horror, it's just been too much for me. I've loved your videos, especially this one, for keeping up to date and feeling a bit more like myself still, without all the mental stress!
I watch a lot of horror movies, almost one per day, and I also write tales. I'd like to recommend a 2023's Argentinian Movie, 'When Evil Lurks', which I suspect you would give five stars, or almost. Would you like to mail?
Top 5: 1. Skinamarink 2 When Evil Lurks 3. Cobweb 4. Thanksgiving 5. No One Will Save You Bottom 5: 1. Knock at the Cabin 2. Scream 6 3. Renfield 4. M3GAN 5. Insidious 5
Skinamarink made me feel like a little kid sneaking downstairs to watch horror movies in the middle of the night because I wasn't allowed for the first time in at least 20 years. It scared me so much and in the best, most unexpected and original way. It may not reach the technical quality of the others, but that feeling made it blow past the competition.
If you liked Skinamarink a RU-vidr called Flawed Peacock did an amazing breakdown of the film. He filled in so many gaps that for me his analysis is simply canon in my head. To me his reading is the correct reading and nothing will change my mind.
I honestly really want to see skinamarink because if hiw its so obiviously inspired by the analog horror genere and from what i seen it really excuated it perfectly, id honestly love to see more horror films be inspired by analog horror cause its honestly one of my favorites
Surprised at your #1 given the styles and subgenres that came to the fore higher up your list but this is my first time watching your stuff, so I'm guessing you're a big fan of the franchise (not for me personally outside the first film). I've dropped my 10 below (starred the ones not on your list) but also wanted to list a few others not on your list that I'd highly recommend - good video and appreciate your rationale for every choice. My 10; 10) It Lives Inside* 09) Thanksgiving 08) The Last Voyage of the Demeter 07) Evil Dead: Rise 06) No One Will Save You 05) Dark Harvest* 04) Infinity Pool 03) Cobweb 02) Talk to Me 01) When Evil Lurks***** Additional Recommendations; - Little Bone Lodge (think it's called The Last Exit in the States) - The Royal Hotel - From Black - Malum - The Sacrifice Game
Yo. I have been watching your videos for a while. Im super glad you took time to talk about the issues with spyglass entertainment and thankskilling! Thank you for that!
I just started watching and I too really appreciate this! I watch a lot of horror commentary channels and I immediately stop watching if they cover a spyglass movie without talking about what’s happening or in a “promotional” way.
No big loss. she is annoying snd her character is so unlikeable. hate the fact she got fired for her opinion. that’s dumb but she’s not a good actress. the new scream films are so bad
Thank you for bringing more respect to Skinamarink’s name!! I love that movie SO much, yet I completely understand why it’s so polarizing (it’s not a case of quality, it’s just about personal taste). I agree with everything you said about it and now I’m gonna check if you have a full review after I leave this comment lol. I went into the movie completely blind and ended up being the only person in the theater. I think you can imagine how that went.
I'm so tired of these horror comedies and Conjuring rip-offs. Last year there were such innovative horror movies like Barbarian, Pearl, Nope, The Menu (technically). In comparison, 2023 was a complete dud
Given the reviews and sales, I don’t see them going back to Spiral. I watched them all back to back this Halloween and that one can get thrown out lol doesn’t fit and wasn’t very scary.
I think "The Pope's Exorcist" should be a 2 star really. It was so painfully generic and the demon voice was Ralph Ineson who played Finchy in uk's The Office. I just couldn't take it seriously. Talk to me was pretty good and Knock at the Cabin could have had a slightly different, vaguer open ending. It was a bit too by the numbers. Apart from that, I think your list is pretty spot on!
I was surprised Cobweb was 4! I expected it to be your #1 but I’m not surprised saw X is there. I actually have no 4.5 or 5 star horror movies this year (😳) but I think No One Will Save You was my favorite!
Skinamarink 1 and Talk to Me 2 for me this year, though not seen Saw X because I haven't seen any Saws after the first three. But if Saw X it's a bit unlike a Saw movie than I'll give it a shot. Nice one for being honest about your views on Spyglass and Eli Roth. I concur
Imo: the fnaf movie wasn't too bad, but it wasn't exactly accurate especially with the characters. I don't know how interesting of a movie it would've been, but I think they should've started with fnaf 4 if they wanted the movies to be lore accurate. If that's not really what they were trying to do that's fine.
I really liked Renfield I think bc I saw it as only a comedy with I guess like a sprinkle of horror. I also watched it in dubbed in Spanish with my family since its our first language & I think maybe that made it funnier / more enjoyable.
Evil Dead rise is the best in the franchise, in my opinion. The creepy factor surpasses the other films. Supernatural horror usually doesnt scare me, but this movie was scary. The ending was mediocre, but so are 70% of horror movie endings. Its worth a watch.
I love analog horror so skinamarink is very scary, especially when i had an issue when I was a kid. I love found footage stuff like that because it seems more real than a movie that's just put together professionally. Knock at the cabin was disappointing since they changed the ending I found the book ending far more Superior and changes the way you think about things
Huge overlook with "When Evil Lurks". I see lots of people saying the same thing, but it bears repeating - if you're a horro-phile and you missed this film. You missed the best horror film of the year.
(My own opinion) ...............but i would rather watch moss grow on a tree than watch Scream VI again. That was an example of crapping on celluloide and presenting it at a theater near you. Overhyped trendy and played out (if my 16 year old was telling me i wasted money on tickets than......) Evil Dead Rises>SCREAM VI
Just wanted to say... you are an absolute QUEEN for speaking about Palestine and upholding your values. I am so glad I'm subscribed to you!! Keep up the great work
I really loved Last Voyage of the Demeter - I saw it in the theater and I think that helped the vibe for real. Spoilers-I loved knowing they were doomed from the beginning , that looming horror being more the monster than the vampire for real.
I appreciate you saying you will not be supporting the 7th movie w/o Melissa & called out the unfair treatment! They absolutely shouldnt have fired her for being against a genocide and I’m so glad Jenna Ortega followed in solidarity.
I think what I loved most about Saw X is that it’s good as a stand alone film. You kind of hinted at it but you don’t have to see any of the previous films to enjoy this one.
Hmmm...tried getting through Insidious: The Red Door based on the recommendation and the promise of many jump scares, but couldn't, because the movie was too boring. Why wasn't When Evil Lurks on the top of the list?
Fnaf deserves to be better because the sequel will be scarier but i understand why she ranked it this way but i am a fan of the franchise. But i understand they wanted to test the waters but i have heard the sequel will be horror heavy.
