Well, there are plenty amazing musical composers, and while I defiantly think Lin could be one of them, I have to say the best is the great and iconic Stephen Sondheim. Though there are some secondary ones that can be considered, like Andrew Loyd Webber and Stephen Schwartz. There are also musical composers that will always be great because they where some of the first like Rogers and Hammerstein.Best is also subjective so my best could be different from your best. Also, like I stated earlier, Lin Manuel Miranda could be one of the greats one day, but he's not there yet.
It would be amazing if Kubo wins the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. But the Academy is bias and if it's not Disney, they don't even see it. But yeah... Kubo and Zootopia are definitely the top two best animated movies of 2016

Rasheed Elmouchtari it's certainly best anime. I'm pretty sure it was even voted "Best Anime," according to one of my friends. This is about movies, though.
Moana STILL isn't out in Finland (it comes out tomorrow). So annoying to wait this long, I don't understand why there is such a delay. And I have been spoiled by some things about the film too by now (but I have understood it's not a film with a big spoilers but still).
Why are people judging the movie so harshly when it hasn't even come out? I mean, sure it's about emojis, but just becouse it's about something you hate (even though you use them) doesn't mean it's going to be the fraking worst. I mean, I hate rich duechbags, but stingy (from lazy town (the creators of the mine song)) is my favourite character of all time. Just becouse the characters are emojis doesn't mean it's going to be the worst movie of all time!
Farije Purellku It's because it's a rip-off of Wreck it Ralph, along with concepts of other movies. There isn't a single part of the movie that's original that's been revealed, therefore I think it will be bad. My opinion on the movie has nothing to do with the characters being emojis, though that idea is also pretty stupid.
Zootopia deserves the praise it gets. Great characters, great story (dude, it's a police story in a Disney movie), great twist, great ideas and good voiceworks. *Moana*? It felt like it tried to get away from the typical princess genre, but when even Maui points it out as a 4th-wall joke, you know that they had a hard time. Furthermore, we could have gotten a good villain that isn't a rampaging monster. Look, if the movie is supposed to use Polynesian mythology, than how come only Maui is featured? If I take another mythology-inspired movie like Hercules, there were more than one deity featured. That would be like if Disney made the story featuring Horus, the son of Osiris and Isis in Egyptian mythology, or Thor, the son of Odin in Norse mythology, without using the rest of the respective pantheon... So yeah, I get that Moana had some highlights, but its flaws are kinda annoying.

My father worked in animation, and he predicted that Moana was going to take it all this year, and I agree, but we're definitely biased, since that particular movie hits extremely close to home for us. I did love Zootopia though! I think it's definitely a toss up between Zootopia and Moana!

Well, based on the summary and trailer of the movie, it will be a generic "be yourself" story following the emojis. Sony is trying to be hip with the kids and it just seems so desperate..

Too bad about Little Prince!!! I loved that one. My top three would be: Little Prince for overall animation, music, story, and message...Moanna for "We Know the Way," "How far I'll Go," and the rooster!!!...and finally Zootopia for beautiful CG animation, a relevant story/message, and the part where Hopps fell apart and cried (one of the most convincing emotional scenes I've ever watched).
I know this is gonna be a damper on the parade, but, Lew you seriously need to look into possibly a new camera. The video is grainy, blurry at HD 720 (highest option), and there was a random blue.. dot near your left shoulder in some takes? And I'm curious, why was your set table so shaky? I really did think your glass was going to fall over hahaha. But, I'm happy to finally see the results, and I'm ecstatic that Zootopia won out in the end. That movie is becoming underappreciated already and is being lost at sea (pun intended) to the Moana franchise craze. Thanks for the video, and an awesome 2016 year of review. Can't WAIT for the series to continue!

RL Gill My thoughts exactly. I hadn't read the Alan Moore comic, but I could still tell when the actual story of the comic started. Honestly, though, I was hugely unimpressed with the film as a whole. I was hoping it to be more exciting, like the Animated Series, but it turned out to be pretty messy!
Hello! Well first of all, thank you for doing this. I love this series and look forward to watching your reaction to what 2017 has to offer. :( I had a couple things I wanted to say. First off, Zootopia is downright my favorite movie of 2016 and I'm so glad you put it as your top- well, second pic, but top by technicality. And I'm so glad to see that someone else liked the score. I also agree with you about Jason Bateman's performance, though I do think that Ginnifer Goodwin did a better job than Auli'i. Second, I actually do agree with your reasons for why Kubo could take the Oscar. Not just the fact that Laika hasn't gotten an award yet and Kubo is, arguably, their best work yet, but also that most of the awards have gone to a Disney owned property so some change could be awarded. It also took home the BAFTA, which has agreed with the Oscars 9/10 times for animation, which is better than any other award show. Still, Zootopia has been at the top of the award contenders when it comes to animation, so really I think it could go to either.
I am so glad you're doing this again this year. I wasn't subscribed to you but I still checked in once and awhile to see if you had updated the reviews. However, I've now subscribed because I really like your view. Also, bias is fine. these are YOUR views, and I appreciate them.

Were you having some technical difficulties during this episode? Aside from the audio cuts, your image seems way less HD and has a bit of a grainy effect going on - perhaps something to do with the camera? Still, great video! I was really looking forward to these outcomes and it was very fun to see your opinion against the general audience's.
I'm not sure I agree with the "best animation" blanket, because things like texture, lighting, cinematography as well as animation itself are very important in my opinion. I'd love to see these have an individual focus when you come back round to this next year. It wouldn't be a dealbreaker though :)

I personally saw both Finding Dory and Kubo recently, and I was sorely disappointed by FD. It felt like it was going back to the first movie too much. I agree that Zootopia is one of the best movies of 2016, but I gotta say that Kubo's the best.
Kubo and the Two Strings has to be my favorite animated movie of the year! However, I am aware that I am completely bias because of my love for stop motion animation as well as the fact that Laika doesn't get the appreciation it deserves. Haven't yet seen The Little Prince but will now most definitely watch it as it is your personal favorite.
The Little Prince was so amazig, but I understand why he took it out. It was also released in theaters in a lot of other countries back in 2015. Heck, it was supposed to come to US theaters in 2015 too but they kept on pushing it back until it was put on Netflix.
Don't get me wrong, I really liked this final episode of this season's EAMOTY, but I was expecting like an hour long special, something I could pop some popcorn for and get really into. That being said, I'm so excited for 2017 EAMOTYs! Even though the movies aren't looking great, it should be an interesting year.
Sorry to disappoint Gabi :( truth is I had a horrible issue with my memory card and lost all my footage from the first timeI shot this (hence the massive delay) so I had to reshoot and I think I sort of went through the material a little quicker - - - I will prepare much better for 2017 and make sure this thing is the epic conclusion it should be!
For next years awards, maybe include other people in the nominating process so there's some variety. I personally never feel "viewers choice" is the best way to handle awards because everyone's just going to vote for what they like or don't like regardless of actual quality, but not bad for the first year of trying it out!
I know it was really hard for you to take out The Little Prince, but in a way I am glad you are sticking to your guns. It makes it a bit easier for those of us who don't have Netflix/hulu, etc. to be able to see the movies (assuming they come out near us in the theatre) and be able to judge and vote with you a little more fairly.Great list of movies ^^ I would definitely agree my favourite movie overall was Zootopia with Moana being a close second
I live in Canada XD Our Netflix is about the exact same as a movie ticket here and the selection is somewhat limited to what is deemed popular at the time.
My point was that if you think about it like that then it's pretty easy to justify buying it for just one month to watch The Little Prince... if you watch even one more movie or show then you've gotten your money's worth I'd say. Justification for spending is obviously super arbitrary, lol.
I understand that that was your point, and that's a completely valid point for those who find Netflix is worth using! For me, I don't spend enough time watching TV shows/movies to bother spending the monthly fee ^^ Either way, my point was that I am glad he is sticking to how he had planned it originally, no matter the cost behind it.
Imho, Moana had a super strong beginning. It was very enjoyable for me. It decreased in the middle however. I still enjoyed it, but each scene felt very disconnected from each other, being events that don't really have an affect. Especially the Coconut scene. It was also disconnected from the villain, who was basically nonexistent. My favorite ploy structure is what I call "the back and forth" where the pro & antagonist trade being one step ahead, as it adds tension. Which is one reason why I love Tangled. It handles it very well for me, and Zootopia does it great as well, although more subtle.
Zootopia's going to win the Oscar, it's the best Disney film in awhile, and Disney has one on much less deserving films. Hopefully Kubo will at least get something but I doubt it'll win best animated
Zootopia (or as it's known in my county Zootropolis) was definitely my favourite film of 2016 (I was unable to see Moana in the cinema sadly but I hear it's amazing).
Since the sound went out on the Male and Female Performance categories, what was your reasoning for choosing your personal picks for those categories? And how close were the results?
If you don't okay, but for me it was obvious. Especialy after I heard it have surprise villain. But she is a sheep, overworking secretary who work for lion who don't appreciate her. Ever heard of wolf in sheep skin? Or that that butler is always the killer. Forr kids it may be okay for a twist, but since it's Disney and this movie is so ambitious in it's message I felt that making her so cliche make this whole mystery dumb. I happend to have harder times to figure out who is the bad guy in Scooby Doo.
akane saotome where'd you hear that? i didn't know anything about this movie going in. and honestly, the movie was so amazing, and i was so embrassed into the story and attached to the characters, there's no way I could have thought of that on my first viewing
I'm not saying it isn't. Just this one character was weak for me. I watch that movie about a month after it's premiere so some spoilers were out. I didn't know who it was so it was okay. I enjoy nitpicking some things I like and share my opinion.
akane saotome to me, it's actually Doug who is the generic uninteredting villan, just because with every other character, they appeared early in the movie and then reappeared later with a new purpose. Doug was somebody who felt like he came out of nowhere, while Bellwether was somebody we already knew, and I liked that.
Zootoipa Will win the ocsar in my opion hands down it was the Best Animated Movie of the Year. Jason Batemen And Jeniffer Goodwin Were Amzing as Nick Wilde and Judy Hoops. im alos really mad that Zoopia got sunffed of visual effects because those were Mindblowing
I love Kubo. I love everything about it. The animation is just gorgeous and the story is really touching. I cry during the movie quite often. I wish we could have seen more Asain-American actors in those roles, but I find that to be a problem with many other movies as well...
Hey chad, do you watch anime? There was a fantastic animated movie from Japan called Kimi no na wa (Your Name). This by far was the most beautiful animated movie this year for me. It was considered for the Oscars but did not make the cut for the nominations. So just wondering if anybody had heard of this movie or if Chad had heard of this movie since it did make small waves in America.
So excited about Every Animated Movie for 2017! I think it will still be fun even if the animated movies don't look as strong this year as they did last.

As a fan of animation I'm kind of surprised that you like Sausage Party so much, considering how poorly the animation team was treated while working on it. But otherwise, I'm glad you did these awards and I'm excited to see your reviews of this years movies!

the little prince was going to be in theaters but paramount pictures dropped it really close to the release date. Netflix grabbed it and I had to wait another year to see it myself. I was so disappointed, I love the little prince.
Have you decided to check out indie films this year? I'll admit 2017's line up is not strong, but if you decide to check out smaller releases like from GKids, or other companies, you should definitely check them out! I respect you mostly stuck to the ones everyone have heard about (for better or for worse), but it would be nice to hear you talk about more indie releases or smaller releases. Why do you think Norm of the North was hated too much? It put in the least amount of effort to BE a theatrical film (and yes it was suppose to go direct to video, but got put on the big screen instead). At the very least, the others were trying....
I was trying really hard to listen to your explanation as to why The Little Prince was disqualified, but you can't just put a track from Enchanted on and expect me not to be singing.
I don't know if I agree with you chad! Moana and Zootopia have had such critical acclaim, and they're Disney, so I have a feeling that one of those two will win!
I kinda think Moana is over rated. I just want something like Disney Princess classics. And I don't mean damsel in distress. I just miss a romantic relationship, it's CUTE! I want a movie to show how a girl can be independent and still in a relationship. No hate, I'm a total feminist, I just want some good old classic movies that will stay in the history books.
My favorite animated film of 2016 from what I've seen (including ones I saw this year on dvd): 1. The Boy and the Beast 2. Kubo and the Two Strings (only saw half of it before the dvd rental gave out on me :( ) 3. Zootopia 4. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV I didn't see a whole lot... Hopefully I'll get to see Moana sometime and finish Kubo. Kubo may have tied with TBB if the DVD didn't have dents. Other than that, this was fun watching ^-^
I really hope Kubo and the two strings wins the Oscar. Firstly the animation is phenomenal and secondly it was something really special and different and its high time laika got the praise they deserve for all their wonderful movies. I understand it was not perfect and there were definitely flaws but I adore it.
I probably would have to put Moana slightly above Zootopia for my top list because rewatchablity is huge for me. It's something I always factor in with my favorites because I rarely rewatch a film because I remember them so well that some of the enjoyment gets taken out. Like how I enjoyed both Frozen and Tangled, but I think Tangled is the better film because I'm always ready to see it again. I've watched Zootopia about 4 or 5 times over the past year but it never feels as great as the very first time. I've seen Moana about 5 times in a single week and the excitement and feelings it gives me has yet to change.
I bet Doctor Strange will bet Kubo at Speacle effects. Zootopeia has the best animation, Moana, the best music, and Kubo, the best effects, so I think it will be very close. Zootopia will probably win though
