It's crazy how much spin JSH generates and how much speed he takes off those Ma Long smashes. Ma Long rips a shot as hard as humanly possible, and it comes back looking like it's in slow motion. Nutty.
@tomsd8656
@tomsd8656 2 года назад
I played ping pong to a decent level, and it's not that hard to chip back the opponent attack. You just stood far from the table, the his shot would slow down by the time it gets to you. But the challenge is getting it back into the table time after time, because when you're that far, the table appears a lot smaller to you.
@spin.chicken
@spin.chicken 2 года назад
I don't want to be that guy but if you understand physics, have an extensive background in ping pong, or a relatively decent level of critical thinking you'll see how it's actually not as difficult and impressive as you may think. What's impressive is how he can be so consistently accurate (from both sides). I always find back spin hits to be much easier to control in basically any sport.
@ktosomcosom19

@@spin.chicken Which shows how skilled JSH was, returning low, with varied placement, and sometimes, even with so little time to react to Ma Long's vicious loop drives, he'd vary spin the way it fools the opponent and gets points for himself.

One of the greatest, if not the greatest, match in table tennis. The level of skill to play those rallies and at those speeds and distances/angles was simply breath-taking let alone the incredible huge spin generated throughout. All sports have their opposites eg in boxing it's the fighter v the boxer, in snooker the potter v the safety player, etc and this is table tennis's battle of the styles. Such a pity someone had to lose but that's competition. Ironic that the Korean guy was more effective when he started to attack (best form of defence as the saying goes). Reminds me when the roles reversed and Sugar Ray turned into the fighter and hunted down Tommy Hearns to win by TKO back in '81.

Joo was like a snake at times, so flexible in the way his body could contort and absorb some of the pace. Also so versatile in placement and spins, very few balls were returned the same way. Add to that his ability to suddenly turn defense into offense if the opportunity presented itself, very capable topspin drives and mid distance topspin rallies.

Joo Sae-Hyuk is one of my favorite players. Possibly the best defence player ever the world has seen. Among the TT players, who revel at hitting top spin forehand and back hand at breath taking speeds, here is a guy who revels in lifting everything back to the table with unmistakable resilience and that deadly chop. I like him partially because I played like him (during college 3 decades ago) chopping everything and eventually winning. Hats off to this world class defence player.

I find it really cool that Ma Long's offense turned out to be a great weakness. Because he wasn't able to predict the shift when JSH does to his own offense, he stayed close to the table constantly to prepare for the next defensive return, but sometimes the ball would come back offensively, and he wasn't prepared for it at all.
@FredPlanatia
@FredPlanatia Год назад
this is why I think JSH lost. Because he started attacking frequently. This made it easier for Ma.
@Lefahne-23
@Lefahne-23 Год назад
Most people underestimate the power of defensive players, as a defender player my self way back college i sometimes play 4-5 rallies as a defender and when an opportunity is found to attack the opponent they'd be caught off guard since they are used to the spin that the defensive player used before. Great play by both.
@Lefahne-23
@Lefahne-23 Год назад
See how most of the score from JSH is him being offensive and getting Ma Long off guard thus resulting him to miss a calculation on how to counter attack after a spike
@tomleszczynski2862

Its seems the attacker has thr advantage. The shots were easily planned and completely open to what and where he wanted the ball to go. A balanced playstyle is probably best, but heavy offense will beat heavy defense.
@spacejesus1266
@spacejesus1266 Год назад
That's probably the reason why nowadays we have a new type of defensive player, the modern defender, who plays with a defensive and an offensive rubber and alternates between attacking and defending. This modern defender can keep up with the heavy attacker since he has the advantage of varying spin.

This match reminds me of a very famous story. In ancient China, there was a man who sold both spears and shields. He boosted his spears were so good that they could break any shields. However, at the same time, he also bragged his shields were so strong that no spears could break them. One day, a by-stander challenged him to use his spears to attack his shields. At the end, that man was speechless. Ma is the attacker that can destroy any defender and Joo is the defender that no attacker can defeat. Everyone here is the by-stander who wants to know what will happen.

defensive players just rely on unforce errors by the opponent, that is why seldom win with the offensive players. this is the hardest style in pingpong to be defensive player.

coz - Your comment only shows that you have either little understanding of defensive play or what unforced error actually means.
@locky244
@locky244 2 года назад
@@ktosomcosom19 They mean unforced in the sense that, because defensive players put super heavy backspin on the ball with chops, attacking players will find it difficult to move their bat fast enough to create enough topspin so the ball doesn’t bounce down into the net or table. They have a lot of time to play the shot. Hence, the error is unforced - it is about technique.
@ktosomcosom19
@ktosomcosom19 2 года назад
@@locky244 it is not that simple that they just have to lift heavy backspin balls. The chop returns don't necessary carry a lot of backspin; they may have no spin whatsoever, hence why ML would overshoot the table with some of the loops.

@@ktosomcosom19 Yeah your right as well, but what I’m trying to say is defensive players (most of the time) do not force their opponents to make a mistake by playing with pace, different positioning, etc.

It would be a pleasure for table tennis if there were more players like Joo Sae-hyuk. This match is more beautiful to see than a match of Ma Long versus Fan Zendong, Xu Xin, Harimoto, Niwa, Ovtcharov, Boll, Lin-Yun-Ju, Calderano and all the others.

If I hadnt learned about Xu Xin and Wang Haos Penhold attacking style, I would definitely play as a defender attacmpting to emulate Joo SaeHyuk. Also the change of the bll makes it much harder for defenders, so it isnt really viabe anymore. Anyways, I am glad I play as an attacking looper now, but I still enjoy the defensive game with TPB lobbing every once in a while to emulate my former dream of being a defender!
