This is Part 2 of our 5 day Enchantments backcountry camping experience. On day 1, we hiked to Colchuck Lake and then up Aasgard Pass into the Upper Enchantments Zone on day 2. Now over the next 3 days, we will be making our way further into the Core Enchantments.
Day 3
We wake up and break down our camp at Isolation Lake. We want to take full advantage of the 3 nights we have in the Core Zone so we intend to camp in each of the 3 Core basins. With that, we don't have very far to go today... we have around 2 miles +/- from the Upper to Middle Basin in front of us.
We make our way around Isolation Lake and Tranquil Lake. The rugged and mostly rocky landscape gives way to lush meadow and we catch our first glimpse of the amazing fall larch trees. The plateau ends abruptly with an amazing view over Crystal Lake below and from this point, the trail heads down a steep draw to Inspiration Lake.
We make it down to Inspiration Lake which has granite rising steeply on three sides. We continue just a bit further to Perfection Lake and find the perfect camp spot for the night. Our site sits above Perfection Lake with views of both Prusik Peak and McClellan Peak. We get our camp set up and then it's time to explore.
Since we only hiked a couple of miles so far today, we do a side hike to Pusik Pass which is a short hike from our camp. We hike around Inspiration Lake and then descend down to the shore of Perfection Lake. We pass through tall larches and grass meadows and begin our short ascent up the pass. It only takes around 30 minutes and we reach the pass which sits below Prusik Peak. It offers incredible views of all 3 Core Basins, the upper, middles and lower. This has to be our favorite view of the trip so far!!
We enjoy the view for a while before making our way back to camp and then head over to Inspiration Lake to take a swim and set up our hammocks to hang out for the rest of the afternoon. We have dinner on the lake shore before we head back to camp.
We watch the moon rise above Perfection Lake and then call it a night.
Day 4
Today we have another short distance in front of us. We only intend to hike another 2 miles +/- from the Middle Basin to the Lower Basin. We reluctantly pack up our camp above Perfection Lake and make the trek back around Inspiration Lake and down to the shore of Perfection Lake.
We make our way around Perfection Lake to Sprite Lake, which is connected to Perfection by a narrow slot of water. We take in one final view back upstream to Perfection Lake before continuing on. Further down the trail, we descend along a fast-flowing creek out of the Middle Enchantments.
The Lower Enchantments are marked by McClellan Peak on one side and Prusik Peak on the other. We make our way to Leprechaun Lake and find a great campsite near the lake. After we set up camp, we head nearby to Lake Viviane to have some lunch... we then explore the area, taking in all of the incredible views on our final day in the Core Enchantment zone.
Day 5
Today is sadly our final day in the Enchantments. We break down our camp and begin the very long, 10 mile hike from Leprechaun Lake back to our car at the Snow Lakes Trailhead. We make our way down to the bottom of Lake Vivian, and say our final goodbyes to the Core Enchantments before continuing on.
From here it is a very steep descent to the Snow Lakes trail. The stretch between Lake Viviane and Upper Snow Lake is long and slow going. At some points the trail even goes across slick granite slopes. Finally we made it down to the shores of Snow Lake. We continue around Upper Snow Lake to Lower Snow Lake before finally making our way down to Nada Lake.
The trail down to Nada Lake was steep again but nothing like the section between Vivian and Upper Snow Lake. We make our way around Nada Lake and things become pretty uneventful. The hike is mainly through the trees, following along a creek, down through the valley.
A little more than 5 very long miles later, we finally make it back to our car! We are both relieved and saddened to be finished. This has been an incredible experience and one that will stay with us forever!
We head into the town of Leavenworth to celebrate the amazing weekend!

Thanks for taking me on this adventure. I was born in WA and have lived there for 60 years and the closest I have been to this hike was on a backpacking trip to Lake Stuart when I was a pre-teen. WA is an amazing place when you get out on foot!!

I first hiked the Enchaments in 1978. It was much less complicated then!! But just as fantastic.

I loved these two videos. My wife and I are just doing a day hike through this place in early October, but wanted an in-depth look into the whole 22 miles or whatever. I see that you aren’t “blowing up” yet, as many vloggers desire, but you’ve made an informing and entertaining video that is dearly appreciated by some. Keep up the good work, and enjoy your beautiful travels!

My third video with you. I'm hitting subscribe. I worked as a dishwasher in Leavenworth and lived out of my car. On my days off I'd hike up to Nada Lake and just camp. There were small cutthroat trout in that lake that tasted fine over a fire.

Wow...you're so lucky to get those permits! I just watched a bunch of your vids including Parts 1 and 2 here and I really like your style. I saw in Part 1 that you would have a packing list...did you ever make one? I'm curious what size backpacks you have as well. Thanks!

Ahh we have not put an official one together (Lol best of intentions right?!)... but as far as the backpacks go... we got both of them from REI. I think mine is a Gregory 60L and Myles has an REI brand 70L. :)

@@WaypointofView thanks for the response! I was curious what size you had to fit the 4 nights worth of food into. Hope all is well.

The first-ever backpacking trip I did was the Enchantments. We did the exact same route as yours, but only as an overnight. As a novice backpacker, I brought too much stuff. My pack was 50 lbs. To this day, I still wonder how I made it up Aasgard Pass with that pack weight. Our permit was only to camp at Snow Lake. We ran out of daylight and going down Lake Viviane is very treacherous, especially at dark. So we had to camp at Lake Viviane. It was windy that night. The next morning, we were covered in sand from the wind. While eating breakfast, a Ranger came by and asked for our permit. It was a Sunday, so yep, even Sundays or holidays, they are there. Since we camped at a non-designated campsite with our permit, we got fined $100. We told the Ranger our situation. But he just said, "You should know your limits and planned better!" and wrote us a $100 ticket. Fully accepted that, and he is 100% correct. After that, it will be the Core Zone permit, or try again next year! What you showed in your videos is the best way to enjoy the Enchantments!

Wow, thanks so much for sharing your Enchantments story with us! Sounds like a very memorable trip, even if it didn't go as planned/ expected. Funny how that works sometimes!

I was involved in training 600 National Guards for wildfires. The Master Sergeant told me that he never wore sunglasses when addressing people because it was disrespectful.

I gotta ask who the artist is that you have to music at 8:33? IS it Cody Francis? You guy were soooo lucky to score that permits. Great video!

Of course... it is Morning Mist by Staffan Carlen. ☺️ And completely agree... we could not believe how lucky we got to get that permit! We still have to pinch ourselves looking back on our 5 days there. Such a magical and special place!!!

Wow, it looks like you timed the larch season perfectly. Was that on purpose, or did you just get lucky? If you don't mind me asking, what were the dates that you did this hike? Here in the Canadian Rockies, our larch season is usually the last two weeks of September.
@WaypointofView
@WaypointofView 3 года назад
Thanks so much for watching! It wasn't exactly on purpose to be honest... it was mostly by chance/ luck. Once we got to Washington and were planning things out, I had read on some blogs it might be a possibility based on the time of year. But of course with the permitting system for the Enchantments, there aren't any guarantees even if you are trying for it. Our hike started on September 30th so right around the same time frame you are mentioning. :) That was our first time ever seeing a larch tree and WOW! 🥰🥰🥰

@@WaypointofView Thank you for the reply. We're always looking for nice places to go to that'll extend the season a bit. I'll be sure to add this one to the list. If you guys ever come to the Canadian Rockies or Purcell Mountains, and are looking for recommendations, feel free to send me a message. We have plenty of larch hikes and backpacking opportunities that are breathtakingly beautiful. And many don't even require permits.
