Thank you for this!! I’m getting into backpacking & don’t want to spend a lot of money to start. I’ve actually used one of the Walmart backpacks for my day hikes for years, and it’s still completely sturdy & intact.
Something that you didn't mention about the Stanley cook set is. First thing is, ditch the two green plastic cups that come with it. And you them at home for a bowl of cereal or something else. And look around the camping and hiking gear section. For the red silicone foldable cups that are like a buck each. Then look for the little propane and butane cans. Once you find them pick one of the small (again red) butane cans. That just so happen to fit perfectly inside of the Stanley cook set. And right above the small propane and butane cans. You should be able to find the "Ozark Trail" brand jet type cook stove set. That comes with a nice little light weight foldable jet style burner. The little burner also has one of those push type ignition switches. And of course a little handle to adjust the amount of flame you desire. So that you don't waste any more fuel than necessary. And a adapter that will allow you to use either propane of butane cans. And it also comes with a black plastic piece. That you can mount on either type of propane or butane cans. It all comes in a really nice nylon case. But I ditched that in order to get everything I mentioned above. Too fit nicely into my Stanley cook set. Oh yeah, one more thing before I post this comment is. The black plastic piece that holds the propane or butane cans. I ended up painting mine a bright orange color. Just in case I happen to drop it or forgot about it. After I have used my Stanley cook set. Because, as we all know, when it is dark outside. And you drop something on the ground. That doesn't have some kind of bright color to it. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack! LoL ⛺🌌 Happy Trails everyone, I hope you enjoyed my message/suggestion.
Thank you brotha!!!! I hate these reveiws that talk about "budget" gear, then show you a $300 sleep pad. Ugh! Wonderful reveiws, and you have a new subscriber!
Can I just say thank you for explaining backwashing, I know it may be silly but everyone just says to do it and I felt dumb for not knowing how so thanks for the tip!!
I’m a big fan of the dry bags. They are really handy for lots of stuff even non related to backpacking. The other thing I like that they sell is the UCO switch spork. I have two of those and got them there. Love it. Great video Mark.
I'm a big fan of the Walmart 10" inch long plastic handle spoon . That has a semi clear silicone spoon on the end of it. You can find them in the kitchen utility area with the rest of the kitchen utensils. If Walmart still carry the Aluminum anodized 10" inch long forks. That again are in the same area where the spoon is that I just mentioned. Both of those together only weigh a few ounces. And if I remember correctly, they only cost me a few dollars for the both of them. In my opinion they work perfectly for those Mountain House Dehydrated meals. And again in my opinion are way better than any type of spork you can fine.
I appreciate your info, this was the second time I've heard of the Klymit camp pad. I had assumed it was expensive from REI or somewhere, now I have hopes I can afford it, will search it out on my next trip to the big W. Thanks!
I think this is a great video because it helps get people who can't afford expensive backpacking gear out on the trail. You don't have to spend a bunch of money to go backpacking.
Wal-Mart also sells a steel cup, that fits that Stanley cookpot nicely. I tend to take that, and leave the green cups at home. Which frees up enough space to fit a small burner, a can of gas, and an emergency lighter in the Stanley pot.
I'm glad to see someone talking about gear from Walmart. Your video just goes to show that you can enjoy the outdoors without spending a ton of cash on name brand gear. I have all of the gear you just showed and it has all preformed well. Too many fall into the trap that they need to have the top brand named gear. Thanks for you review. It will help a lot of people. Enjoy and be safe out there!
I prefer the Dollarama storage bags. They are also waterproof and it's transparent. I can see what in them and where it is in it. As for the sleeping pad, i bought the Decathlon one. It's thick, large and I was able to try it before buying. As for the pot, Sea to Summit makes collapse ones that can go on a heater. Bigger and takes less space.
I get quite a bit of things from WM. I use an Osprey Atmos 65 95% of the way up my summits, then a $20 Ozark Trail pack for the actual summit from high camp the final day and leave everything else at camp. When you're looking for something like a daypack in that 30L and under size, there's not much need to spend beyond what OT asks for its multiple options. 1) I can't quite agree with the mini. It works, but the flow rate is not what you want if the last thing you feel like doing at the end of the day is filling multiple bottles for the next day. If you can get the regular squeeze without the bags, etc., for less, I'd go with that. I don't regret switching up to it. I use a CNOC bag for my "dirty bag" so don't really need Sawyer ones. 2) I had the Stanley pot as well. Eventually I moved on to titanium so that I could cut weight, but there was never a problem with the Stanley pot and you can put your fuel, stove and everything you need in a cook kit inside.
@@MarkedMiles I upgraded to the 750ml titanium AlliExpress Toaks knock-off. I believe the brand that month was Tomshoo altho I think they kind of rotate the brands of their generics around. I did pass along the Stanley to my young nephew, tho. The Mini is okay, but when one day on Mount Whitney ended with me at about 12000 feet in camp with a throbbing in my head, I was in NO mood to process four litres of water! i thought there was some hope when they came out with the Micro, but it sounds like that one was a clogging nightmare and they've abandoned it. Take care.
This was a good video of man on Wal-Mart gear. I got a lot of my gear for hiking & kayaking gear there. I could tell you one thing that's hot on the Walmart Gear is the 2 piece camping plate set. Last Summer I did a hiking & kayaking camping trip when we got to the kayaking part! The camping spot that we had rented out that night someone stole my camping plate set & my flip flops. I was more angry that they stole my flip-flops because I have big very very wide feet sz15 6 EEEEEE wide with very fat wide toe that are equally straight across making my foot 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my little toe. My foot outgrew shoes , socks , and boots 33 years ago because they do not make no Footwear that is wide enough for my foot that is 6 1/2 inches wide. Whoever stole my flip-flops I know they do not have a foot that is a size 15 with very very fat wide toe that are straight across. Because of my toes being so fat and very wide I just cannot fit into any type of flip flop. As a matter of fact the flip-flops I had my foot would barely and I mean barely fit in the flip flops because my toes are wider then the flip flop straps. That's just how wide my foot is. I had to finish out the rest of my kayak trip barefooted 👣 because flip flops is only Footwear that I can wear. I didn't mind being Barefooted 👣 because I'm 95% of the time barefooted 👣 anyway but it's was the fact that I had to go into a lot of stores barefooted 👣 and they would not let me in until I explain my situation when they saw how big , how fat and wide my toes were they understood. So just Remember! Walmart 2 piece camping plate set & flip flops are 2 gear items from Walmart that are hot that people want to steal. Good video man thank you for sharing. Oh by the way man I like the name of the channel. I guess as you just heard it fits me well.
Good Video, i just found your channel and subscribed, Thanks for some realistic talk on what an average person can afford, keep on making the videos, Thanks
I really like the 40l Izard trail lightweight pack. It’s the grey and orange one. It’s a sho kingly great, and we’ll thought out backpack. And only weighs about 2lbs
Update to my comment from two years ago. My local Wal-mart has discontinued all the Sawyer water filters and the Stanley cook kit. Bad move by Wal-mart IMO.
There's almost nothing outdoors wise in the UK version of Wally World but there's good outdoors retail chain stores that do a very good variety of gear from cheap and cheerful to eyewateringly expensive. Usually you can find the best bang for your buck in one of the two bigger chains if one doesn't have it the other one does at the price you want.
Im not hiking the AP, but please tell me are walmart's off the shelf backpaks good enough to carry gear/clothes and get you thru 3-5 days at the local state park or boyscout camp?
I’m all about getting what you can afford, they will get you through a trip but how comfortable it will be I’m unsure. Go try on a few and put weights in them and see how they feel. However If you can afford a quality pack I would go that route.
I have some of those dry sack and they are not waterproof but still work great as stuff sacks. I tried a buddies Klymit pad but didn't like it enough to replace my Big Agnes. I got a few of the Stanley pots and love them, great for the money and I got one of those stoves too.
Awesome video. I liked it so much I just subscribed to your channel and give you a like. I am also a Walmarts backpacking gear fan. And now I am your fan. Do you have any videos about Walmarts tents? Thank you so much for sharing this video. God bless you.
Unfortunately, my local Wal-mart doesn't carry the sleep pad or pillow. It does carry the cook kit, the Sawyer Mini and Squeeze, and the dry bag assortment. I saw this morning they carry a 20 liter dry bag as well.
If you go the tools isle you will see a hatchet made by HART. That thing I have tortured. Not the greatest for chopping, but if you have 2 people it makes a real good splitting wedge. Not to mention it is pretty hard. However it is heavy. It is a multi use tool. Can be used as a hammer, axe, splitter, weapon etc. Instead of buying a pillow I have a backup realtree weatherproof jacket ( have military poncho also so it is a backup ), that is multi use as well. Including a pack cover when I hang it and don't want it to get wet. Can also get under there and get stuff out of my pack without exposing it to the wet weather.
I'll add a plug for my beloved Uco Switch utensil set. Walmart is the best place to get it becasus it is $4.97 as opposed to $8 on Amazon and everywhere else. It is a knife, fork, spoon and long utensil and weighs right at an ounce.
Hey man what type of blanket do you use when you're hammock camping are you going to sleep in bag or overquilt and is the pad sufficient enough not to need an under quilt
I use a 20 degree Kelty sleeping bag - I always use the mat just because it’s more comfortable but if you are going under 45 degrees definitely look into an underquilt
👍 I’m not ashamed of any of my gear. Much of it would be in the CHEAP category. And a lot of it was bought at Walmart. My Shorts, my sport T-shirt, some of my synthetic long Johns, even and yes even my ozark trail hiking shoes.I couldn’t fill my food sack for a trip without a trip to Walmart. And I expect that not to change any time soon.....
Thanks for sharing the info!! It shows one can go hiking/camping with budget gear! I also bought the Stanley coookset and the dry sacks from Walmart. Did not know Klymit pad and pillow are sold there too! Have to check it out! If not in store, will check online. Thanks again for sharing your info!!!!
Seychelle has better H2o filtration imo, makes Sawyer look childish. Check out their Extreme filter than even removes radiation (you're going to need it when the nukes go off).
