Coming up with innovative ways to adapt to Mother Nature’s rules is what most fishing lodge operators do on a daily basis, but this could be one of the most outrageous ideas for composting we’ve ever witnessed.
Owner of Errington’s Wilderness Island in Ontario’s Chapleau Game Preserve, Al Errington, has been working in concert with his local bear community in ways that most of us would never dare attempt. But the results have been nothing short of amazing. Living in the world’s largest wildlife sanctuary for almost 40 years now, Al has had an opportunity to study nature and wildlife in an environment that has not been affected by hunting or trapping.
Al has discovered his rake is one of the best ways to protect yourself from bears!

One of Canada's longest-running fishing shows, Fish'n Canada travels from coast to coast in search of trophy fishing opportunities. First started by brothers Angelo and Reno Viola in 1986, The Fish’n Canada Show has been on the air for over 30 years. Today, Angelo is joined by lifelong fishing buddy, Peter Bowman, and the pair continue to travel across Canada educating anglers using the experience they’ve gained over the years

A fed bear is a dead bear. This guy might be confident around them but if somebody who doesn't know what they're doing shows up in this zone they could get into some trouble. Not really the sort of thing you want to show as a cool thing on TV.

You don't need to outrun a bear, you just need to outrun your slowest friend

Beautiful to see the bears. I’m interested to know, if the bears are being feed daily like this, wouldn’t they become dependent upon the food and be less likely to learn natural survival practices like fishing etc. also would the bears get tamed in a way where they will not be bothered by humans which could cause them to get closer to human habitation which could lead to bears attacking?

Isn't feeding the bears habituating them to people?

They disposed of the food on an island miles away from where any people would be. The only time those bears see people is when the staff drops off the food. The staff quickly leaves after that.

Bears are smart, they know who that food comes from.@@Fishncanada

I'm 10,000 miles off. In a totally different climate with vastly different animals and hugely appreciate this tuition. Thank you! To control dominant animals from consuming all feed. Especially in harder times. Same with all animals. Feed in multiple locations. A few metres apart.

I"m curious about the method u use to haze or condition the bears to stay away. They are so intelligent that eventually they would learn the rakes are harmless. unlike the rubber non lethal rounds which at least cause them pain. maybe..for many the experience is scary enough to work all the time but u might find an individual bear who wont back down ! Knock on wood it wont happen.

It all seems quite altruistic and humane and sunshine and rainbows and lollipops and unicorns until the banquet comes to an unfortunate end and the bears stage a coup and make a banquet out of your sorry asses🐻
