Hey guys, just wanted to let you guys know what happened today. At school we were asked to write an essay about people we look up to, or you admired. I picked you guys and wrote an essay about how much you guys inspire me! You guys are such great people and I can't stress that enough. Everybody in class thought I was really weird for writing a multiple page essay about 2 fisherman, but it was worth it! I'll let you guys know how I did in the assignment soon. I really hope you guys keep doing this great work because I know you guys are very busy and have a hard time pushing out these videos but I really hope you keep at it!!!!! -Your actual number one fan!!! :)
I have a 867 with a loose stripped feeling reel seat and I'm not the only one so watch out for that. Hopefully it was only on the original when they first came out rods. I don't use my 908 often enough but that one's good. I've thrown the 13" dead twitch and it almost felt maxed out so 22oz I'd have to try it to believe it.
Timely vid Matt, thank you. I was gonna pull the trigger on a 908 but I just don't have enough truly giant baits to justify the purchase. I'll just scoop up another 867. I remember when you were testing these rods. In fact, your posts on Swimbait Nation about how the 867 is the perfect Hudd rod is what made me get it AS SOON as it was available.
toadslayer72 I think the 867 is the near perfect DEPS 250 rod, I'm a hudd maniac and I don't like it for hudds. The Hudd Rod by iRod is my favorite Hudd rod for sure
I had a 908 for three trips out and it snapped casting a 9 inch Bullshad. It was probably just a defect in that particular rod, but Dobyns wants people to pay to replace rods so it's not really worth the risk. Buy a Leviathan and you can be confident your rod will handle the bait and you'll get it replaced in the event it has any defects.
I would love to see you if you guys could catch a fish on that pre-rigged line-thru savage gear trout. I know savage gear definitely isn't known for quality but that thing actually looks pretty sick. Biggest bait I've ever seen, too.
Matt you ever hear of/think about fishing of Paul Bailey? I'm sure you know him from guiding would be pretty cool to see you and him fish together, unless of course you and him aren't friends or something
Hey Matt huge fan of the channel, I saw your video on braid and was wondering if and what backing you used for all your reels? Electrical tape? Mono? Thanks for all the content!
Hey man great video once again! What is your opinion on the 120$ dobyns fury swimbait rod? Just getting into the whole swimbait fishing style and needed a good beginner rod that won’t break the bank!
Any comments about the 13 fishing muse line? Been thinking of their swimbait rods. I am new to the big bait world so I know very little. Thanks for the video and info. I don't own a Dobyns but heard nothing but good things about em. The few vid reviews I have seen (very few) have me interested because of how the action and feel the rods have for the selected bait weights. The reviews have been great but none have shown me much beyond a few casts, which actually is what has drawn me to them. Just nervous about spending 225 bucks on a rod I may have been mislead into. I was planning on using it for Largemouth and Stripers off the bank...Aint got no boat. I know a lot of stupid questions but if you have anyone who has used these rods or you yourself have one for the casting 8' 6" 8 to 14 oz. swim-bait rod I am getting ready to buy one but just was hoping for more expert opinions because it seems there are so many personal opinions on gear it gets a bit confusing which I am guilty of myself. I like trying new stuff as well but when it comes to 225 bucks!!....AND getting into a not so cheap bigbait fishing style I start to ask a lot of questions. And why do I start with the 8 to 14 oz. rod? Because I have two baits...One is a 9 oz. 14 inch Shankas softjerkbait and the other is a 12 oz Castaiac Rainbow trout LMAO
I know this video is a little older, but if you see this...as someone starting out Swimbait fishing, can you recommend a good “do it all” Swimbait rod to start with? Not too concerned with price point either, just lookin for a good rod for medium-Big baits...one that could handle trebles and Top hooks...u guys are the best
you should do a video about how to tell if the reel your looking at online is right for swim baiting i am just getting into it and i am trying to find a good huddlestun to s waver reel that i can through all me swim baits on can you go over what to look for and what makes a reel good for heavy baits
So I just bought one. It says on the rod 8-20oz. I asked tackle warehouse and they said to contact dobyns and dobyns said its rated to 20oz now??? They said TW has it listed wrong and dobyns says they see gonna changed their listing on their website.
Id like to get myself a good swimbait rod, but my problem is transportation. I do have a tracker 190 bass boat and it has storage for up to 8 foot rods, but I dont store the boat at my house. Its stored in a covered, but outdoor storage unit about 10 minutes away from me. So i always remove all of my rods after each fishing trip. My longest rod is currently is my 7'6" Shimano Expride that I use for flipping. The reason being is because I have to put my rods in the cab of my Tacoma to transport them 10 minutes away to my boat every time I go fishing and 7'6" is the longest rod I can squeeze into the cab. Is there anything out there in the 7'6'ish range that can handle maybe 1--5 oz swimbaits and still have some flex in the tip? Ive looked and the best I have found is rods rated for up to 2 1/2 oz
What would you choose as a first swimbait rod? Would an 807 be a good choice, using lighter drag for treble hook baits? Also you seem to be using the 300 TranX over the 400, any reason or just cause?
I love the 908 but do you think the 867 is still a good choice for hinkle trout, hinkle shad and deps 250? ive been using my 807 and I just need a little more but I'm not sure whether to just go with the 867 or the 908
What is the best Huddleston Deluxe 6" color for fishing down south in ponds because most of the ponds only have bass or perch for fry??? So would the baby bass, blue shad or phantom yellow perch be the best choice??? Thanks TacticalBassin
Matt Allen I'm here in Oklahoma tossing live trout to stripers, what rod would be good for me, these trout are 10oz or so and around 10inch anyway what's a good rod for these live rainbow trout
Hey matt i just picked up a dobyns 806 ml sb rod have you fished with this rod? It seems to have a different action than the 806 hsb rod its stiffer. I guess what im getting at is, is it good for trebble hook baits
great video I do have one question looking for all around swimbait rod for my 6"hudds and my deps 175 and magdraft 6" I have a megabass 8' leviathen i dont like it what would u recommend i live in michigan so my baits are not bigger then 6"
Hey Matt, I'm a little cautious when throwing these expensive swimbaits so I use 20lb fluorocarbon. I know you use braid so will that 85 lb braid snap on a backlash when throwing even a smaller, 2oz bait?
so say im on a super tight budget. what would be the cheapest rod you can get to throw a 2-3 oz bait. and what would be the cheapest reel to pair with it.but still have some reliability to be used as a banger rod from shore. lol. one that could say with the easy cast shore method could get that 2-3 oz bait out there 100 yards. but still have some bend in it when you hook that lunk to help play the fish.
thanks for the info. ill have to try to find it used somewhere or something. i got a few big baits for free from a friend and the tackle shop one day that had a little damage on it from shipping, but i dont have anything to throw em on and im not really planning on buying 100 dollar baits anytime soon so ill prob hold off on the big stuff for now. but thanks for the info that combo does seem legit though. and at least now i know what to look for used or how much i need to save up. i was hoping for like a 100$ dollar set up though to just get those baits wet. thanks for fast reply and info though.
Chris Mata Thanks man...i ordered the reg. Dobyens 806 yesterday....i hope it's the right rod ....its a 2-8 oz on a revo beast...also bought 4 huds...6inch and 8........ first swimbait purchase
I bought the Shimano Cardiff 300A for a starter swimbait reel. Maybe I'm doing something wrong(it's my first round reel) but the drag is non existent. And tension knob also is non-existent. Especially when I put the Huddleston 68 on. Im using 20lb P line floroclear. I even took the line off and tapped it to the reel to see if it was slipping. Is the reel just a dud or am I doing something wrong?
Currently I own a Irod Jr Swim Rated from 1-4oz and a GLoomis Swimbait rod rated for 3-8 oz. Looking to add a big bait rod and trying to decide between the Dobyns 908 and 867. Which one would you suggest? I do not currently own a bait over 11 oz but want to add a rod that doesn't need to be always devoted to giant baits. I fish and own a ton of baits between 8 and 10 in. Just wanting to save time on tying baits on and giving me a bigger range.
I personally wouldn't use anything over 8 or 9 oz comfortably on the 867. So if you're going to be chucking 11 oz and above, I'd go the 908. But most 8 to 10" baits don't weigh over 10 oz (8" Hudds and Gancrafts 230 are in the 4 oz ballpark) and I would stick with the 807/867 for those.
I was wanting the Low Down Customs XXH Rod but he has no schedule on when they could be re-stocked. I'll settle for the 908... I think it will be a good fit.
Would you say this new version is an evan heavier action than the original 9 footer , I'm guessing they chopped the 2 inches from the tip to make it handle the bigger baits a little better ?
I just got an iRod Bama special, its a 7'10 heavy, modfast(1-4oz). I have 20lb Copoly spooled up. Can I fish some glides or a 68 special on this thing?
Matt, I have the GLoomis GL2 956 SWB. What's your opinion using the rod with Hudds, Deps or other large swimbaits? How does the 908 compare with the rod I just got?
Hi guys, love the video. I can't afford a Tranx but I have opportunity to get a Curado 300DSV for less than $120. Would it be enough to handle all but baits > 8oz?
ATLEAST 1/0 if not 2/0 Round Bend (make sure you pick your hook and snap ring sizes before you weight the bait! I didnt the first time and well, I had to redo the bait)
Was looking into the tranx 5.8 but realized it still takes in 30 inches of line. I'm looking for a new real for the slide swimmer and big Glides I personally think 30 in is too much to work it effectively and slow down. Your take? Also looking into the 300 Conquest, 300 Lexa and a few other low profile reels. Thanks in advance for any info or insight
Hey Matt and Tim. What's your take on the Dobyns FR 806SB? I'm looking at getting a swimbait rod, but since I'm new to the SB game and it's not huge up here, I don't want to break the bank. I'm only throwing 68 specials, Gantarel's, and Magdrafts as of now. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. tight lines!
Hammer Rough It looks like a great rod, at a better price. I have a Champion 805 FLIP/PUNCH, and I'm waiting on my Champion Extreme DX 742SF. I love Dobyns
All of those swimbaits are in the ballpark of 2 to 3 oz (I'm guessing you aren't going to fish the 10" Magdraft since the other two baits you listed are around 6 to 7 inches). I'd go with the 795SB/FR for those. The 806s and 807s are typically used for 8" Hudds and heavier glides. Of course, if you're eventually planning on throwing larger stuff, I'd would go ahead with the 806. But for the baits in your list, it might be a little too much.
