I must of missed this video in Dec but just wanted to say thanks for explaining and giving us the reasons of why you do what you do. I thought I was the only one that would buy a piece of music and sit at the Piano with the music, only to find myself struggling to read it. Your publications are truly much easier to read at the piano. Please keep helping us in this particular area. My eyes and myself appreciate it

HANON doesn't have any chords or black keys because it's supposed to help your finger dexterity, it's purpose isn't to sound like a piece or to sound nice.

Other big limitation of Hanon, it doesn´t have a single exercise with one (or more) fingers sustained down in a key while the other fingers work. That is a tip for me that Hanon is just for begginers, that we study it about a year and change the method. Just comparing the Little Pischna works with sustained fingers since exercise 6. And the big Pischna, the first preparatory exercises is already with sustained down fingers. You never will get play Bach without a good practice of sustained down fingers.

Bachscholar Hi! How are you? My sightreading is improving each day thanks to your videos and books. Thanks! However I wanted to ask you how can I know what notes should be sharped/ flatted when reading in different keys if I'm not reading the notes directly (I'm reading them by intervals)? Do you have some tip?
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 6 лет назад
Thanks! You have to read the notes directly and not by intervals. Actually, you have to be able to do both equally well, but reading the notes is more important than reading intervals. You need to know musical notes as well as you know the 26 letters of the written and spoken alphabet. There are no shortcuts.

Nothing wrong with claiming your book is the best. In fact, if you're going to publish a book at all, you should think it's at least one of the best. Otherwise, what's the point? I didn't think you came off snobby or arrogant. You simply want to help fellow pianists by promoting and selling your book. Thanks for making this great material available!
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 6 лет назад
Thanks! But people need to realize it is not "my" book but "Bach's" book. I am simply publishing exactly what Bach wrote. If I were to publish a book of the Chopin Etudes exactly the way Chopin wrote his etudes, nobody would be calling it "my" book but "Chopin's" book. Why then is it all of a sudden "my" book with Bach chorales? When people get upset or offended with this video, they must realize they are up against not "me" but rather the greatest composer in the history of music, J.S. Bach. If there were a contest between Bach and Chopin I think most educated musicians would rank Bach superior to Chopin, which gives all the more reason to rank a book of Bach chorales as more beneficial and useful than a book of Chopin etudes.
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 6 лет назад
Don't you understand this is all personal opinion? There is no way to "scientifically prove" a personal opinion such as the one I assert here. It's just my opinion, so there's no sense in getting all worked up over it. It's just that up until now, pianists have pretty much ignored Bach's chorales as practice and performance "etudes" and I am trying my best to get them known and out in the public eye. We all know Chopin's etudes, which are overplayed. I suggest everyone throw away their Chopin etudes and play Bach chorales instead. They are better music (in my opinion) and more gratifying to play (in my opinion) and require many more vital techniques for developing pianists than Chopin's etudes (in my opinion).
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 6 лет назад
Well, I can't comprehend how most pianists play Chopin's etudes so diligently yet throw out Bach's chorales. You can look at it either way, and either way is founded on one's own beliefs. Look, just face it, the majority of piano students (and about 60% of mine) are adults both returning to piano from a long hiatus, or they are beginners. The over 40 and 50 demographic is now the largest demographic of piano learners in most of the western world. These adults will never be virtuosos and they will never play in Van Cliburn Competitions and become touring concert pianists. For them, Chopin etudes are not only impossible, but totally useless. Bach's chorales are much more useful and teach many more vital aspects of piano playing than Chopin's etudes, which are really only for talented young pianists who plan to attend conservatories and who strive to be virtuoso concert pianists. It is a different world now than in the 1850s, when usually the only reason for learning piano was to become a virtuoso, concert pianist. For this reason, today in 2018, Bach's chorales are MUCH more useful and practical for 95% of piano students, young and older, than Chopin's etudes.

BachScholar Hi. Thanks for your time. I order the book of sightreading and hope to start practicing very soon. I only have a small question... In order to sighread properly and correctly do I need to read each and every note of the piece or do I have to focus on reading intervals/ distances of the notes?
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 6 лет назад
You should do both.
@sergioruiz1093
@sergioruiz1093 6 лет назад
Thanks!! Can you give me an example of doing both of these things at the same time?
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 6 лет назад
Yes, look at a Grades 1-2 or 3-4 line, play the first beat, and then name the intervals between the notes as well as name the notes themselves. It's that easy.
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 6 лет назад
I meant look at the "Soprano & Bass" line, not Grades 1-2 and 3-4 which refers to the book "Sight-Reading & Harmony".

Well done Cory, I think your video is excellent but you probably realize the green-eyed pedagogues and massed ranks of the embittered dissatisfied will be gunning for you. Keep up the good work. I'll have copies of your chorales.
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 6 лет назад
As said in another comment, they are not "my" chorales, but "Bach's" chorales. It's really not about me at all, but all about Bach's music being, as I claim, more beneficial than Chopin's music for the average aspiring piano student. It is much more practical in piano playing to learn how to play and master chords, and especially four-part chords, than pages upon pages of highly virtuosic material that the majority of piano students will never even be able to play at half speed.

Which book do you recommend for learning to read quickly?
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 6 лет назад
"Sight-Reading & Harmony" is a very thorough and systematic approach to reading. You get many shorter examples with it. The "24 Easy Four-Part Chorales" is shorter but has more full chorales as well as full chorales equal to the Grades 3-4 shorter lines in SR&H. I think the best thing to do is get both.
