In this video, Will talks about the best budget hard drive that we would recommend using. It's the Lacie Rugged USB-C 5TB. It isn't an SSD, but these hard drives are very cheap, extremely portable, have high storage, and because it has USB-C as the connectivity, it's surprisingly fast.

@AlliandWill
@AlliandWill Год назад
I don’t have a video dedicated to that, but editing with it is pretty straight forward; you plug it into your computer, make a new folder and name it the name of your editing project, then put your footage/images/music or whatever else you’ll be editing into that new folder so that you are organized. Then open your video editing software and navigate to that folder on the drive, then import your footage into the editing program and start editing. It’s just additional storage space for your footage so you don’t have to keep footage on your main computers hard drive

I’m very new to using external hard drives and I find it a bit intimidating lol I’m going to go ahead and purchase this one. I keep running out of disc space on my Mac Air laptop. I make space by deleting stuff but eventually the problem comes back. I can’t even upload a 10 minute video onto my laptop so I could edit it down on iMovie which is discouraging for me. So, when I decide to upload videos / photos from my memory card to my laptop, I just plug this hard drive in so it uploads onto there instead? And then edit on iMovie from there? Also, I noticed you said this hard drive isn’t an “SSD” - what does that mean? Is that a downfall to it? Would i, a newbie, even be affected by that? Haha
@AlliandWill

Absolutely! All you do is airdrop footage to your MacBook Pro. I bought a Seagate 5 TB 3.0 USB external hard drive at Costco, but when I tried using it, it gave me an error saying something about using an exfat hard drive might corrupt files. Will this external hard drive work with DaVinci Resolve? Even though Premiere Pro is better, using DaVinci Resolve makes it easier for my color grader when sending them files. It also feels similar to Premiere Pro and is easy to use. Thanks!

so interesting because the video I watched right before this one someone in the SSD industry said this: Lacie does not make drives, they make fancy looking yet non effective enclosures. What you will find inside of that LaCie box is a regular 4TB M10 Seagate drive (same as you would find in a native Seagate enclosure but for much less). Orange bumper and metal case are not going to save the drive from mechanical failure in case of impact. Heads will get damaged just as easily as they would in the cheapest option of this drive in this size. It's basically a marketing stunt. man, it's hard to know what's good and what's not.
@AlliandWill
@AlliandWill 5 месяцев назад
As someone who has used these drives professionally for the last 15 years, I can say without a doubt that the info you shared is not accurate. The rubber case will absolutely protect the drive from short distances like off a desk, compared to if it didn’t have the rubber protective case. That’s correct that inside is just a regular drive, but they are tested for use by professionals before they’re sent out, which is why they’ve been the industry standard for 15+ years. Almost every production studio I’ve been hired by used these. The world is shifting to SSDs which is why I left a link to my recommendation for an SSD, but these LaCie drive are extremely reliable and that’s why us pros use them. Hope that helps 👍. Also, I’m not biased because I have no affiliation with Lacie, I’m recommending because I use them for my commercial client work and have been using them for years. Can that be said about the other person who may work at a competitor that makes drives that’s talking down about Lacie? Just a thought.

They aren’t as fast as SSD’s, but most people don’t realize that the rated 130MB/s speed is more than enough for most tasks, so the other benefits of portability, no power plug, durability and how cheap they are make them a killer deal

Those rubber bumpers don't save you. What makes these survive a fall & your old one not is that they are solid state & the old one was spinning. If the old one was an SSD it'd be the same as the rubber-guarded one. For a spinning drive those rubber bumpers would do nothing in case of a fall. Some drives have a drop sensor that stops spinning if it detects movement, this is common on 2.5" "Laptop" size drives but very uncommon in 3.5" "Desktop" drives like the "Big" one you were referencing, but without that a drop in a case or out of one is the same. The rubber bumpers do nothing really for a solid state drive & only reduce vibration for a spinner
@AlliandWill
@AlliandWill 4 месяца назад
That’s incorrect, these LaCie drives are NOT SSD drives. They are spinning hard disk drives, hence why they have rubber to protect them.
@LostOnTheLine
@LostOnTheLine 4 месяца назад
@@AlliandWill As I said, IF they are SPINNING drives that still doesn't mean the bumpers are doing much. The 2.5" drives with drop protection compared to 3.5" drives that rarely have drop protection, that's where the difference is
@AlliandWill
@AlliandWill 4 месяца назад
@TheLine The rubber acts as a shock absorber if the drive is accidently dropped. Of course it will reduce the impact amount and increase the chances of the drive still working. SSDs are better, yes, but there's a reason why Editors all over the world for at least the last 15 years have almost exclusively trusted Lacie drives (Before SSDs were introduced). Inside, they may just be a regular drive, but it's the metal case and the additional rubber protective barrier that makes them more reliable. So you are right that SSDs will outlast spinning drives, but I completely disagree that the rubber protection isn't doing much. It protects the internal spinning drive far more than you're giving it credit for.
@LostOnTheLine
@LostOnTheLine 4 месяца назад
@@AlliandWill As someone who has dealt a lot with Rugged equipment, I can assure you that the impact is minimal. BUT it does help a bit sure. The damage to a hard drive is a result of internal movement, not external force. The main thing is the Read Heads getting damaged, the next ia the platters getting scratched, 2.5" drives, every one, has smaller read heads that are less flexible. That alone makes them less susceptible to drops. In the past they generally spun slower, which helped too. Many are sealed with alternative gasses, which also helps a bit, but usually shortens their lifespan & usually significantly increases their price much more than the improvements are worth. The very biggest thing to prevent data loss is for the disks to stop spinning or even for the heads to lock up in the case of a fall. That's pretty much standard practice on all Seagate 2.5" drives as well as many others, if not most. Now my issue was more that you were using YOUR comparison to what sounds like a 3.5" drive & saying this is SOO much better because it's rugged. When the improvements are 70% from the drive bring 2.5", 25% from it having drop protection features that stop the disks & freeze the heads, 3% from other improvements inside the drive & maybe 2% from the rugged case.

@@LostOnTheLine Appreciate the back and forth, and respect your opinion, but again, I agree with some of what you're saying, however, claiming 2% isn't reasonable. You mention "The damage to a hard drive is a result of internal movement, not external force". Quite literally, when a drive falls and the internal parts get damaged, that's because of the external force applied to the drive when it hits the ground. The entire drive suddenly stops and has to absorb the impact fall. The rubber protection will absorb that amount significantly higher than 2%. It's probably more like 50% from desk height. In any case, if you're going to choose a 2.5" drive instead of an SSD (Let's say to save a bit of money), wouldn't you want the highest chance of your drive not breaking? This is what Lacie is providing and why I recommend them. I've never had any of these drives fail and I've used dozens of them over the years. It's video's like this that keep me confident: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uzgmdd1f6XI.html

This is surprising to hear as I've owned several dozen of them, and also have worked off several dozen more in multiple different production studios over the last 17 years and have never had a single issue with any of them. There's a reason they are the industry standard that professionals trust.

@@AlliandWill yeah bro I just saw that video just now. but I want to use SSD on my Mac and pc for editing film and more and some times I connect it on tv. currently I,m using it as exFAT is that safe or any other recommendations ? I have no idea which is the right format for multiple operating systems. but I don't want to lost my editing works and library bro. Sorry for the bad English. 😊 If I choose Mac OS journaled it will not work on other divices 😭. If I didn't change format the files will be lost at any time. What will I do ?

I would highly not recommend formatting a drive for both Mac and pc. It will be extremely slow with exfat because that’s the only option you’ll have. My suggestion is to buy two different drives, format one for pc and the other for Mac, then use something like a usb thumb drive or SD card to transfer files between them whenever you need. Working off exfat drives is not a good idea on either system
