Reviewing the best budget smartphones of 2023 with a price under £200 here in the UK, including the top camera phones, gaming mobiles, 5G devices and more. I've fully tested a selection of favourite cheap blowers including the Moto G53, Xiaomi Poco M5 and Redmi Note 11, Nokia G22, plus Realme's latest Androids. This round-up of the best affordable UK mobiles in 2023 starts with Motorola mobiles, including the Moto G53 and the Moto G23. These boast a gloriously stock Android vibe, like the budget-friendly Nokia smartphones. Hardware is more limited vs the Poco and Xiaomi handsets, and updates are limited, but they're still great for everyday users. And battery life is among the best for under £200.
The Nokia G22 is one of my favourite options for stock Android fans who want the reassurance of future updates. You can even replace the display and battery yourself, if you're brave enough. Meanwhile Xiaomi has several smartphones in this round-up of the best budget blowers in 2022, including the Redmi Note 11. One of my personal favourites with fairly dependable camera tech, aside from the poor video recording support. For a bit more money you can grab the Redmi Note 11 Pro on sale occasionally.
Don't sleep on Poco either - that M5 is still an absolute blinder, but don't bother with the C40, which is poor for that price.

Top video again pal. You cut through the nonsense and tell me what I need to know. On that.. Got a Poco F2 that's coming up for three years old. Still working well but had been thinking of something new and was thinking about the F5 whenever it's released but you've now got me wondering about the M5, Redmi Note 11 or even the Realme 8. Not a big mobile gamer so maybe don't need the horsepower of the F5...

Hi, can you help? Looking to replace broken Poco x3 NFC 😞 with something equivalent, as it seemed all round perfect, but as cheap as possible. What would you recommend? Only looking for basic stuff, phone call, messaging, insta facebook, etc. and some general internet surfing, some snapshot photography mainly people portraits, looked at a few of the ones in the video but most seemed quite slow responding compared with Poco x3, maybe because less ram or lower spec processor or not so good touch response from screen? Help! Thanks

I love my Xiaomi Redmi Note 10, the screen quality especially! Cost about a fifth of the top Samsungs and can't fault it. Fell out with Samsung a bit when they stopped including a charger.

I just got the moto g73 5g from argos for £229 as a second phone and many hours of sat nav in the van. It was essential i had a lcd display to not get burn in. The screen is brilliant as is the performance. The stock launcher with a touch of moto is the perfect combo in my opinion. The camera isnt wonderful but the performance with 8gb of ram and the dimensity 930 chip makes it smooth and quick to use. The 120hz refresh helps also.. battery is lasting very well and overall its a light and pleasurable phone to use. Much unlike the samsung a13 i was getting frustrated with, i even had to put nova launcher on to make it more usable. Dont get me wrong this moto g73 in all departments isnt like my s23 ultra, but for the cash it amazes me how far lower end phones have come. You wouldnt be dissapointed if you bought one. My s23 ultra didnt come with a case, charger and cable in the box either so moto has big respect in my eyes for that.

You could be more specific about how ram/chipset affects comparative performance. Can Unisoc T606 compete with the chipsets in the other phones for example?

As someone who just bought the g22 i feel i can answer that. Sadly the answer seems to be no, the processor struggles at gaming or at my music library (50.000+ titles)and at chromecast starting at 1080+(fine until HD). For me all of this is not a deal breaker since i do not game and use my phone primarily as a phone(^-^), navigation system and music player. I can easily overlook some stutters while browsing my music library. It´s a shame really since i would have easily payed more for a phone with a better processor/screen, but the pickings in repairable smartphones is slim indeed. The only Smartphone better in this category seems to be the Fairphone but not only does it cost 600 bucks to the 180 in the nokia BUT THERE IS NO HEADPHONE JACK!!! Hope this helps some people put the performance of this phone into perspective. Sadly it is not easy to find repairable and decent tech products overall. Only this Phone or the Framework Laptop are examples that come to mind for me.

@@frederikkaltebra7967 As far as I can see, The Unisoc T606 is a little better than the MediaTek Helio G25 or G35 which is used on some budget phones but the MediaTek Helio G85 used in the Motorolas he mentions has better performance.

I love Motorola so much, and they have done some great things under Lenovo ownership. But it's obvious that they reduced the OS and security update dev staff, or have made them less efficient somehow.

I'd argue that they made better phones under Google. The original Moto G's were epic. I had them all until 5/6.

@@tinomts In the end Google was only after a big chunk of the long list of Motorola patents, which is why they sold Motorola for about 10 billion less than they paid at a time when Motorola was thriving. So Lenovo came in and essentially funded Motorola to build itself again from the ground up tech and patent wise. It paid off in the end. Plus Lenovo has largely not meddled with Motorola operations, unlike how Google did it. I think if you spoke to Motorola employees they would agree that Lenovo has been pretty good for them. I think the reason for bad updates is having a lot more phones to develop for in the last few years.

A lot of people get rid of their phones in two or so years. Especially when they are so cheap. Providing two or more OS updates for the phone doesn't make sense for Motorola. By the time you give the customer a second OS update, they are buying a new phone within the year. They'd rather sell them a new $200 phone with the current OS than give them all this support on a device that no longer makes them money. Google has each customer spending money on their platform to justify the longevity of their software support (same with Apple.) And in my experience, everyone who buys a $1k Samsung keeps it for 8 years - and Samsung is big enough to support cheap devices. Motorola is going to go the way of LG and HTC, eventually, if they can't manage to make devices that have more mindshare. Supporting their devices is a start though and would definitely help their perception. I'm not saying I want less OS versions, I just understand why Motorola does it this way.

Nokia G22 should come out of the box with andoid 13, have 1080p and at least have T610 or T612, instead of the same as the previous year, T606, for a slight cpu improvement

We are having Great Deal's here in the USA. Last month I bought the Moto Edge+ 5g 2022 for $199. & $40. A month Unlimited Plan. Moto g Stylus 5 g 2022. Is also $9.99 with a $40. A month Unlimited Plan. My main Phone is Poco X3 GT. I paid $265. Over 1 year ago. It updated last month to Android 13 and MIUI 14. Moto Edge+ 5g 2022 is a Flagship Phone. I'm very Happy with it.

I'm a bit stuck! I have had a Poco M3 for years now and now I want NFC for contactless payments. I have considered the Poco M5 but the Poco M5s looks a little more tempting with the stereo speakers. Cant decide! Really want to spend under £150 ish Maybe Redmi 11? I might go for the redmi note 12 as it's on sale!

I do understand that Nokia does deliver updates even to next OS. But please do test it - from your large old stock. Many of Nokia's devices once updated to newer OS run extremely slow. Please also see nokia forums. For example, my Nokia G20 is now with A13 but just useless. Another technical issue is that they have removed factory reset from bootloader mode. That means if there is any issue one cant factory reset but send it to service centre. Cheers mate!

This is one thing people never consider. Endless updates WILL end your old phone. While some updates are just fixes, many of them contain a LOT of expanded features and bloat that will gobble up system resources on older phones. My old Motorola phones may not get all the latest updates but they still work fine and as well as they did in the past.

I have Nokia g50, I would not recommend it. It has a few bugs it crashes every so often, also sometimes will not connect to wifi or your data provider, have to reset wireless settings. Fingerprint detection is sketchy too, back to Motorola or one of these other phones.

I bought a midrange phone for the first time this year (Pixel 7 for €350). Previous phone was a Redmi note 9s, which was amazing when I got it but got trashed by updates that made it slower and removed features like for example split screen. Point being, a lot of budget phones have amazing hardware, for the price at the very least, but annoy you with bad software, skins (miui etc.) & bloatware. Still it's often a decent compromise for how good the hardware often is.

In Greece its either the Redmi Note 12 (not 5g) 4gb 128gb or the Samsung A14 5G 4gb 128gb. I recommend the Xiaomi for the specs.

Can you make a video about the available smartphones with 1440p flat screens ? There are a lot for QHD screens but QHD flat one are very rare. Not everyone likes curved displays, infact the majority doesn't. Yet the manufacturers keep on making them. Hope we would get flats QHD screens this year.

Redmi k60, k60E, k60 pro, Iqoo 11, Meizu 20 pro have flat 1440p screens. There are a few more which I can't remember.

Motorola are very kind and generous I contacted Motorola because I could not find my headphones that come with the phone anywhere may have been stolen they wanted all details about my phone which I had to email them the person on the phone said they would get their higher up department to look into it after I gave all the details to this company who works as a 3rd party for Motorola in Australia I got no reply back and two weeks later I received a package with a pair of Motorola earphones free of charge thankyou Motorola and one good thing Motorola is way cheaper then Samsung or Apple and they still come with a charger and earphones
