Thanks for the video - although it probably would have been useful to start the test section with a recording using the unshielded microphone so that it could be used as a baseline to compare against the various shielded tests in the same environment - for example, you talked about there being a noisy leaf-blower outside your window - we'll just have to take your word for how noisy it actually was since I couldn't really hear it in the shielded recordings - but it would have been interesting to note how much of that external environmental noise might have been picked up in an unshielded scenario for comparison.
These things are made not for blocking external noises, but for taming reflections inside the room on which you're recording. It would have been good to compare the mic with and without the filters to hear if they're coloring the sound.
I’m about to watch the video. Their supposed to help you record outside. I’ve seen rod wave use the middle one in a music video. It shouldn’t help with crazy echo.
I just don't understand why with a test like this the "look" of the product 6:38 should ever come into play whatsoever. Isn't the entire point of a test like this how it effects the sound quality? Unless of course you don't take sound treatment seriously and it is all for RU-vid views or something ?!? LOL
It would have been interesting to hear what the Mic would have sound like without any filter to have a clear comparison, but also to see how much surround sound is being filtered out at all.
If you go off this guy's recommendation then your being swindled. If you look up in the description area. It shows the Melon audio link and not a link from all 3. This means this guy was probably paid by Melon Audio to make this video, so he is going to be a little off on his review on the account they paid him for the review. This means his review is probably only putting the Melon Audio in 1st place because they paid him to say so! If I'm wrong I'm wrong, but my instincts are 99x of 100 usually right.
Im 100% about sound quality. i feel for singing (vocals) i prefer the CODN by far. the other 2 sounded a little boxy or a better word to describe it for me is chocked off. for singing i prefer a more natural open sound. this s why i record in the middle of a smallish room with furniture, rug and curtains to absorb reflections. of these three its the CODN for me especially with all you get for the money
I 100% agree with you. The vocal booth is a hell no. The Melon Audio is too closed and causes a bit of a boxy sound. The CODN is the clear winner for me as well.
I like the reflection filter it sounded better to me but the melon audio sounded good to it really isolated your voice like a vocal booth I'm going to give the melon audio a try when it comes to music and home studios you have to try new things.
Doesn't the melon pop filter sound a little boxy? Also, do you have any fixes for an Presonus Audiobox that isn't recording anything! I tried changing the input/output ports in my DAW and Computer and still nothing works. I mean, the settings that worked for a year doesn't work anymore!
Well it literally put your mic in a box so it is gonna sound boxy.It all comes to preference tho.If you like the sound or you know how to fix the boxy sound I think it still a good product overall
Your passion for teaching and your dedication to my growth has inspired me in ways I cannot put into words. Thank you for shaping my career.God bless. Slim from Uganda
Would there be any issue with no only using the shield, but pairing something like the melon at the same time. It would seem plausible that the mic will still fit in the shield space with the melon on top of it...and having both the shield and the melon would seem to tame reflections that much more?
You came to the conclusion that the pop filter was the best for vocal quality becasuse it gave the best all round protection. You were supposed to judge the sound quality by assessing the recordings but you gave us a conclusion based on how completely the foam surrounded the microphone. Why was it necessary then to do any vocal tests if the conclusion was so clear just by looking at the things?! Lame.
I didn't even know this kind of gadget and equipment existed. It could be that the surrounding where I grew up didn't use any of this kind. I'm impressed that this really enhances audio very well. Wow, you really sings very nice. 🖒🖒🖒
Thank you for this! From another video I saw, the reflections from behind are the main issue. Seems like the Melon Audio is an interesting one from that perspective. So a test with a "bad room" with a lot of reflections from behind would have been very beneficial, it could also with some modifying be placed on an arm.
I used the melon audio before it add more low end which is effecting the tune of the microphone, i think the best option is the codn reflection filter with some more acoustic treatment in the room but if you cannot add more acoustic treatment then melon will be the best spacially for someone whon travel a lot and record in different places
Vocal Recording Quality is best on Codn Isolation Shield Kit. If you absorb to much, you take out a the natural flow of the sound and recolor it wrong. If you dont absorb, you get to much artificial reflection/colors. Btw, you should make a comparison with and without booths on every booth.
Still 1000000% for melon !!!! It's amazing and space friendly 😁😁😁😁. Appreciate musician like to preview anything that fit our taste Salute for you bro ❤️❤️❤️ !!!!!!!!!!
Which one would you recommend for travel? Let's say I'm going on vacation and I need to record my voice for a commercial from my hotel. Which one do you think is better in those cases?
hi I'm leowolf of leowolf TV on youtube, and i've been watching your videos for a few months now, and have enjoyed the info. however i need your advise and wisdom of mics. I have a Blue yeti mic it's very good, Save when i have to raise my voice in certain songs. it reverbs and the higher the voice or rather the louder the voice it buzzes/reverbs. can you help me? can i show you my set up? my mic has a faom filter on it with a furry muff filter ontop of it and a pop filter in front.
@@EdwardSmithMusic there are some really affordable options out there I just happen to find rockville audio browsing the internet one day there mic stands are really durable
how dare you trick me into getting emotional over one of the most heartbreaking songs to my conscious, in the middle of me just looking for a good mic shield. that was great.... and now I hate you!!
I do have to say that the video was worthless. It didn't show what it sounded like without, and with. In fact, increasing the gain drastically on both with, and without with a visible chart would really show what's going on. I know these work, not entirely, but decently. But would be nice to show before and after. Without it, it's just ah "Take my word for it"
Guys I need your help bout my mic. I got that foam cover I put my mic inside of it. Why do I got that bouncy foam sound after I speak. It’s like a foam echo…
Nie video, but it woulve been great if you actually did a technical sound test as it appears a bit subjective . Just simple frequency capture using a DAW.
What do you base you're ratings on, the appearance? Why don't you test them to determine the noise floor of each. I'm trying to get my noise floor down to -60 dB or less. This video does not answer my question.
For the most part, this review doesn't really help. There was no baseline test w/o any of the shields. Then, the audio heard through a Y T video won't give most people a clear idea of the differences in sound between the items. I know this isn't a scientific level product test, but I do think some audio metering (across any parameters Ed chooses) would have "shown" us what we couldn't precisely ""hear". That said, I guess the set up aspect can be helpful to those who are concerned about mobility. Otherwise, if you plan on having your mic setup in a specific location in your home studio, further info and testing should occur. The absolute end goal is a recording set up that gives you the best option to capture the clean audio you desire. (This is not a knock on Edward S., just my opinion if it helps).
The Melon thing can't really work to filter out room reflections, because all the reflection is going to happen before the sound enters the pop filter in the front. For it to work for room reflection, you would have to have your head inside the Melon thing.
That's not true. While it's partially true, if you talk on the side of a microphone you will still hear it. Doesn't matter if it's cardioid or not. While being fully encased is the best idea. Having all but the very front exposed does indeed prevent noise, vibrations ect from the back and side.
@@duckilythelovely3040 Correction: Having all but the very front exposed does indeed BARELY prevent noise, vibrations ect from the back and side. In order to take full advantage of reflection reduction. The singer must be isolated WITH the mic. That way, audio from the vocalist is diffused on the way through the shield and then as it comes back from the room outside. Shields that isolate the mic from the back do very little to reduce reflections specifically because you're trying to reduce reflections on the side where the microphone already has the most rejection. You might even colour the audio by introducing more low frequency reflections (of which cardioid mics are practically omnidirectional). This is why none of these shields do much of anything in poorly treated rooms. Rooms in which the best course of action is; a booth or some proper sound treatment of the room. These things aren't useless. They do solve a problem... but they don't solve the problem many people think they do.
@@Unethical.Dodgson You can say correction, but it doesn't mean it is. It actually does makes the vocals more vivid, and full. If you are unable to hear that, it would seem you're just not at that level yet to know it. Thanks for your comment!
@@duckilythelovely3040it's not meant to prevent noise. Noise is gonna get thru irregardless. It's meant to prevent the mic picking up your voice bouncing back off a wall into the mic because it sounds horrible. Without any sort of room treatment to start these do nothing to help. Most of my vocal recordings for songs have a bit of white noise but you cant hear it in the mix. Definitely try to minimize noise as much as possible though before hand and if you have minimal room treatment set your mic up in the center of the room and record as close as possible to the mic.
A PodMic is a dynamic microphone, so it shouldn't pickup much background noise. Your mic isn't getting enough power, and therefore your increase in volume is causing the noise. A good solution is to get a Cloud-lifter. This device provides additional power for the mic so it sounds loud and clear, without any un-nessacary background noise being added.
I know that this is a year old. It would have been better to hear the sound on your DAW to get what you hearing and to see the " comparison" of each item.
