Father Geroge Elliot discusses the best Bible translation Catholic! He discusses USCCB approved Catholic Bible translations in the Mass vs his preferred Catholic Bibles for referance and personal prayer.
If you are looking at the New American Bible (NAB or RNAB), Douay-Rheims Version, or the Revised Catholic Edition (RSV-CE or RSV-CE2) he provides a Catholic Bible review for listeners.
There are a lot of Catholic bible translations and even more opions on what is the best. Each version has pros and cons looking at the original Hebrew Bible, original Greek Bible and the Latin versions of the Bible Catolic editions. When looking at the preferred Catholic bible or best version of the Catholic Bible it is important to consider how is the Bible translated.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:47 📖 The USCCB-approved Catholic Bible for use in the Mass is the New American Bible, though it may sacrifice some details for poetic flow. 01:29 📚 The Douay-Rheims Bible, a split translation from Hebrew and Greek with heavy reliance on Latin, provides precision but can be challenging due to rigid word-for-word translation. 02:10 🤔 Some translations may lose the original meaning of Hebrew and Greek idioms in English, aiming for extreme faithfulness to the original text. 02:55 🔍 The Revised Standard Version (RSV) Catholic Edition or the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) Catholic Edition, both sold by Ignatius Press, are commonly used translations. Here are the best Catholic Bible translations mentioned and some reasons why they are preferred: 1. New American Bible (NAB): The NAB is approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) for use in the Mass in the United States. It flows nicely and is widely used for liturgical purposes. 2. Douay-Rheims Bible: The Douay-Rheims is a split translation from Hebrew and Greek with heavy reliance on Latin. It provides precision due to its word-for-word approach, making it useful for theology study. 3. Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSV-CE) or New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (NRSV-CE): Both the RSV-CE and NRSV-CE are commonly used translations. They are available from Ignatius Press and are considered reliable choices for personal reading and study. It's important to note that different individuals may have personal preferences based on their linguistic skills, theological leanings, and the type of reading they are doing (personal devotion, study, liturgy, etc.). Each translation has its strengths and weaknesses, so individuals should exercise caution and seek guidance from reputable sources when selecting a Bible translation for their specific needs.

Too bad JeruSalem, AntiOch, Alexandria, ConStantinoPolis, and Rome apostatized and lost JurisDiction in 422, 428, 444, 877, and 896.

RSV-2CE I find the NAB/NABRE to be concerning, to say the least. I feel like the translators have compromised God's Word.

The Douai-Rheims is almost word for word Latin & is not a direct translation from Greek & Hebrew. The Douai-Rheims is probably better for linguistic folks or people that have a really good understanding of the English language. It is basically a Catholic Geneva Bible or some other contemporary English translation of that time.

My ultimate translation would be a dynamic equivalent english (or language of origin) version, balanced for poetic/accuracy, as close as possible, with foot notes inserted, wherever needed, for clarity of debate about, or meaning of, in the original languages.

NaBRE is great catholic translation but some of the foot notes or study notes there has problem Example the foot note of Matthew 16:21 it denies the Divinity of Christ and it denies Christ who knows his divine Plan. See Foot note.

Try the Ronald Knox version. He was a Catholic from Great Britain.

I'm not a Catholic, but I favor the 1970 imprint of the New American Bible, Saint Joseph Edition. The language flows, the poetic images are beautiful, and I find that it helps me to dig deeper for meaning and inspiration. Language can be a gateway to wisdom, and I think the literary quality of a Bible translation is very important. "Literal" translations of the Bible do not speak to me. They have all the grace and majesty of a telephone directory. I avoid them.

The footnotes in that version are VERY critical, in the sense that an atheist could just have easily have written many of them. I have the same version of that Bible.

Started with the NRSVCE, but I found all the modern gender vocabulary distracting. I now have and read the Douay-Rheims but I use the NAB 1991 to help me for reference when the DR gets a little difficult to understand.

The revised standard version is riddles with Catholic afterthought changing the original Greek translation in spots. That’s the one I don’t listen to it all. You can’t go wrong with interlinear

I wouldn’t use the revised standard version at all..it’s a Protestant version and has no business being used by Catholics. The NAB is deplorable. The douay rheims version or the Knox version would be the best in English, however that being said; as Catholics are language is Latin and should be learned by every catholic being as Latin is a really easy language to learn..and so I would say that the clementine vulgate would be the best version

There is a huge verbal difference between the Knox and D-R. Knox was trying (and succeeded) in producing a Dynamic Equivalent from a Formal Equivalent. I find the Knox great for Lectio Divina, not so great for study.

Saying "I wouldn't use" or "deplorable" without any supporting reasons are pretty meaningless statements. The RSV was in fact deve.oped with the assistance of the Catholic Church. The fact it says "young woman" instead of "virgin" shows its fidelity to the Hebrew because that it exactly what the Hebrew says. The NT provides further information.

Wow… When and where would every Catholic find an opportunity to learn Latin? Were not the scriptures first written in the every day language of the people, up until the eras leading to the Reformation? Let us return to the elitist dark ages eh?

Read it all again, please, 2nd Corinthians 3:6 King James Version 6 "Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life." Read it again please Because people told me this too, it doesn't matter translations Bibles mike and even used 2nd Corinthians 3:6 KJV to justify that! I'm saying connect it way after at Revelations 22:18-19 KJV translation of Bibles it does matter all about the KJV one with the Strong's exhaustive concordance that goes with it because it's hard to understand the thee thy thou KJV verses too !! 2nd Corinthians 3:6 KJV it makes seem like translation doesn't matter but read after at Revelations 22:18-19 KJV it does matter !! Translations of Bibles it matters in a way read what happens to Bibles that added or taken away KJV verses too ! Again that's at Revelations 22:18-19 KJV !! In simple words they end up in hell too for not truly getting right with God too Hell is a place of torment mentioned at Luke 16:23 KJV Revelations 21:8 kjv Translation of all the Bibles , it does matter in a way!! And because Brother mark Peters even confessed to Myles and I, the Catholics added on bible verses because they follow by the Douray Rheims bible it’s not even the KJV one, and much like the hardcore devote Muslim, they follow or obey the Koran Bible, again that’s not even the King James Version bible translation, either! And I’m saying, read Revelations 22:18-19 kjv for doing that!! And I’m saying the NIV and ESV bibles they take away words from THE KJV one, and I’m saying read Revelations 22:18-19 kjv for doing that too!! It’s all about the King James Version bible with the Strong’s exhaustive concordance that goes with it too! Again, I’ll say it again too, the Catholics aren’t legit real Kjv bible translation believers why is that, read it again, please, People will also say this too, “Catholics are Christians, Or Christians are Catholics, mike!” And because people told me this straight up! And Again, that’s not even true !!! the catholic bible believers, or those devote Catholic worshippers they aren’t legit King James Version bible believers, and why is this, and because we established this already too!! Read it again please, ***sorry read this one please, You gotta Put the Bible verses together!! Go back to the Gospel John chapter 1 verse 1, and then put verse 14 (or 13 verses after it, put it together, and then add in Hebrews 13:8 kjv “Jesus is the word of God since we established that, that “Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore, because that’s what Hebrews 13:8 kjv says, and it’s even in the catholic bible Douray rheims bible version too!! And then go back to Matthew 16:18 kjv “that rock Jesus was talking about”, Jesus was legit talking about himself!! And all along, and because again, you gotta add the bible verses together!! Since it’s not just John 3:16 each day and God’s words never changes each day too, when it legit says, “Christ Jesus being the chief cornerstone”, at Ephesians 2:20 kjv, 1st Corinthians 10:4 kjv (again, it’s even in the Catholic translation bible too!) “Jesus is the rock” all along!! Catholic Church is a lie, and a contradiction, and according to bible verses too! The Brother Jeff I. Even confirmed yes it’s not just john 3:16 each day too! Add the Bible verses together yourself! I also had to ask again if I’m even saying “that we need to connect Bible verses together it’s not just John 3:16 everyday?” The brothers with kjv church been even telling me yes ! So therefore I’m saying it all correctly too! I had also checked in the catholic bible again that’s not even the King James Version Bible translation one, and to be courteous too! It says the same thing too! ***I think a lot of people don’t know this because they assume only licensed college Harvard degree college theologians can say bible verses !! When it’s not true, Peter and john were just fishermen they didn't have college theology education ! Acts 4:12-13 kjv We should all try to study kjv verses day and night Joshua 1:8 kjv! It’s true because people told me this too, “your not licensed theologian to say bible verses mike! It’s not true!! Anyone can say scriptures, sir! ****Those bible verses gospel John 1 verse 1, and Gospel John chapter 1 verse 14, and Hebrews 13:8, Ephesians 2:20, 1st Corinthians 10:4 Matthew 16:18 it’s even in the catholic bible Douray rheims translation version because I had checked there and to be courteous too! The catholic bible translation followers or Douray Rheims bible believers they added on bible verses, even mark Peters mentioned it to Myles and I here too!! And I’m saying, Read Revelations 22:18-19 kjv for doing that too!

We won't get through this in an afternoon. But quick list. DOUAY RHEIMS 1582/1610 ✝ Nice version, even if not the best. JERUSALEM 1966 Legitimate option, but not my favorite. RSV Catholic Ed. 1966 ✝ Arguably the best. The most ecumenical. NEW AMERICAN 1970 Fine. It's a legitimate option. Just not the best. NEW REVISED STANDARD 1989 WOKE gender inclusive garbage. RSV 2nd Catholic Edition 2006 ✝ Very nice option.
