@@BuckinBillyRaySmith Easiest way my grandfather taught me is like yourself. The way he always said the properly filled tooth on the chain should wrap around the file. The file should be wrapped around by the chain of the tooth. Love your show and experience and explanation. I have tuned many people to your channel and style as it’s the best. Was taught to do it properly the first time and every time from then on. Easy when you know how. Love you and God Bless. Keep up the amazing work and advice. John and Cathy Ontario

This is a very good example of a simple life skill: If it isn't working, try something differently, search for answers, ask a friend, look up a video - whatever. The only time to quit is when something else is more important. I just had one of the best days in a very long time and what happens? I come home and am enthralled by someone skillfully sharpening a simple chain.

Good day; I've been watching your videos, not for long but this video has taught me a lot about filing. Now I'm 74 years old, and no expert with saws, but I've done my fare share, never realized how to sharpen a chain properly, I've always used a 3/16 file. So I find out this old dog can still learn the proper way to do things, thank you. On another note, it is great seeing good Canadian content. I think there is to many people putting BS on here, GO CANADA!!!

What's your experience about file hitting the drivers? I mean when teeth are truly wearing out and getting shallow, in that point it's hard to file without hitting them. Is it rare chain to be snapped caused by damaged drivers?

These chain sharpening videos are among the best and most important ones you make because sawing with a sharp chain vs a beat up chain is the difference between day and night. This is why you need to do a video on this topic every several months (which you do)...to get to the newbies to the channel. I'm a weekend warrior who lives in the woods and I've used a chainsaw for 50 years and just recently learned from you about the gullet. Oh Lord, what a difference. 50 years! Nice wisdom my friend.. I’m making my kid watch close so I can quit filing his saws for him. Sometimes another adult can explain in a way your kid will listen too. I don’t know how you can deal with that chain loose on the bar.. I have to tension my chain or I rock the tooth back too much. I may push too hard on my file, but an old machinist once told me “a cutting tool stays sharper longer be it a file, blade, or drill bit”. If its cutting it stays sharp, if its skipping then it dulls quicker. *edit now that I’ve watched more on the video I can see your quick tension system I LIKE IT Looks good Buckin, you’re a good teacher and a great friend!

Im not a tree guy, felling feller or anything of the sort. I'm a welder, but boy, do i love power saws. Anything 2 stroke, honestly. I live on the md/pa line, and wood is my source of heat in the winter. Watching buckin changed my firewood experience. Heck, life experience. I went out in the garage a few years ago when i started watching, put the saws in the vice, and got to work. I went starred cutting, and the thing was jumping all over the place. I said what the heck. Maybe it doesn't work with hardwood. Nope, i took 2 seconds, thought about what i was doing, and rewatched the videos. I wasn't putting the racker gauge on right all this time. Hit those rackers and man was she hungry. I loved it. Instantly hooked on filing. Even the little T-handle stihl was getting after it after the filings. She's old. I can't remember what model off the top of my head, but it's a good 25 years old. I do use a file guide when im out in the field and dont have a vice. There, i said it. Go ahead and start busting my chops.

Had the pleasure of asking my dad for some guidance on my saw chain sharpness. He cleared utility lines in his youth and he suggested that I was over sharpening and the C gullet was too pronounced and may lead to chipping on the top of the front edge of the cutting tooth (which it had). The capital C tooth gullet he recommended matched yours exactly versus the lower case C that I was using. Also, I was a wee bit high with the rakers so taking those down also helped. In short, thank you for sharing! Feels great when you receive good advice/guidance and makes life even better when you can help out others and share in your way.

Hey from Washington but I wish I would OF SEEN THIS VIDEO LONG AGO LOL, I would say Sthil, Husky, or whatever the person uses but should make this their step 1 before for using a saw. I have seen many videos trying to perfect the craft of making and getting a sharp lasting chain and just really the importance for a home owner or regular Joe as myself THE IMPORTANCE of making sure the saftey aspect of correctly sharpened chain is needed. I Commend you for putting the time in to making videos such as this one and really think some of these companies if not all of them should pick up this video as a starter video for a owner to watch. I now have a few years under me and watched people destroy their chains not understanding the process of your video you have so kindly and passionately made. THANK YOU BUCKIN BILLY from a man that is working his way out from the darkness you bring the world knowledge without fear from everything that I watched with your videos. Hi Billy Ray. I've watched many of your videos and find them interesting and informative, especially this one on sharpening. I'm an occasional-use saw user and sharpen my own. Over the past four years, I bought three Stihl saws, where cutting dead wood on my property and the woman's next door keeps me busy. I burn 3 to 4 cord a year. The 261C with a 20 inch bar, the 400C with an Oregon 24 inch, and a 500i with a 25 inch are the saws. For me this is more of a hobby than necessity. But, it keeps me fit, I enjoy the work, and I like being self-sufficient. Despite how sharp they are, the saws are not cutting freely as yours do. I too have back issues and prefer to stand straight not having to bend or squat while I cut. I meticulously sharpened all three saws this week after watching this video. I have the chain on the 261C looking like the factory 16 inch I use occasionally, and use a 3/16" file. The 400C has a decent gullet and the best looking "C" shaped teeth with a 13/64" file. The 500i being the newest saw has only been sharpened three times with a 13/64" file. So, I am still able to follow the factory filing. I am disappointed at how the saws cut. I find myself bending or squatting to cut, and using the felling spikes rather than standing straighter. With the 500i, I have to push down hard to cut effectively with the end of the bar, otherwise the saw four-strokes. The 400 cuts the best, but the chips are small despite the raker filing. The 261 does ok for a small powered saw and a smaller chain. I have filed the rakers beyond Stihl's recommended setting of 0.026" on all three saws. Am I missing something? Should I be using the 7/32" file on the larger saws. What about the rakers?

These filing videos are what brought me to Buckin’s channel so many years ago. I was watching some other channel (rhymes with Manglerstar) and he was spouting off with some insults about soy boys and a bunch of other nonsense and I thought there must be somebody out there who actually knows what they are doing and who has a different energy. Well, here he is… the real deal. I don’t know how many times I have watched and re-watched Buckin’s sharpening videos and I learn something every time. My filing is so good now that when I took my saw in for a repair the guy who owns the local saw shop thought I was cheating on him and taking my saw to a different shop to have my chains sharpened. I told him I did it myself and who taught me. He wanted the name of the channel… probably a subscriber now, too. 😅

Thank you so much Buckin!!!!! You have helped me out TREMENDOUSLY when it comes to filing my chain!!!! So many people tell you wrong information - they mean well. However I learned from you! Thank You so much! So many people say do 2 -3 strokes per tooth to get your chain sharp then call it quits, when its dull - please not always. Ya in a perfect world sure, However that's not the case in all situations, I learned from you, you keep filling that chain till it's sharp!! SO MANY VARIABLES!!! Buckin will tell you - You should file your tooth TILL IT IS SHARP he don't care if that one tooth takes 2 strokes and another takes 30 strokes!!!!! DON'T LISTEN TO PEOPLE THAT ARE FOOLISH!!!!! Sharpen that tooth till it is Sharp!!! If you want your chain to pull your saw through the log = THE SAW CAN FEED ITSELF... OK!! - 3 things that are important to pay attention to in your chain filing if you want your saw to feed itself so to speak!! 1- Gut the Gullet, 2- Rackers need to be filed at the proper depth or more aggressive !!!! AND, & AND, & AND 3- Which I was totally surprised and didn't know the,, TOP OF THE TOOTH NEEDS TO BE SHARP AS WELL!!!!!!! If that tooth is not sharp on the TOP IT WILL NOT PULL YOUR SAW THROUGH THE WOOD regardless of racker height from my experience !!!! Sorry to bother you Buckin, but is not everything i just said true?????? YES OR NO?????

Thank you very much, Mr. Ray! You just removed all the fear and confusion I had for filing my own chains. I always just tossed a chain out when it got dull. Now, I am going to go to town on a few chains that I set aside for that day that I learned how to file a chain and I am confident after watching this video that I can do it.
