Ozark you're right, to be honest, i'm pretty new in bucking and splitting firewood, but Ray's way of filling chainsaw is great to me and helps me a lot...you can check the video on my channel of me bucking and splitting firewood i have also shown how i sharpen the chain on my Stihl 044 with 5.5 mm file, and it's on the very end on the line but it cuts great.. Buckin Billy, i will be happy if you can also check my video and advice me with my way of bucking if i should do something better and so on... Thanks!
i had a hell of a time with 5/32 files but after watching Buckin' s video a few years ago i stepped up to 3/16 files an BOOOOYAAHHHHHH!! works awesome! never going back to the "recommended" ever again.... listen to Buckin' he has practical knowledge and i'll take practical knowledge over "book" knowledge all day long!! ..... thanks Buckin'
I changed to the 3/16 file when sharpening 3/8 lopro after you made a video about this the first time. Much better! The file is easier to use, the chain stays sharp longer, and the gullet gets removed automatically! Thanks to you!
@@gunterbecker8528 7/32 is for regular 3/8 chain, 3/16 is for .325 chain, and 5/16 for 3/8 low profile, which is what I was talking about. He suggests trying 3/16 for 3/8 "lopro".

BBR, you got a mention today at the beginning of AvE’s latest video, BTW, love the Scottish Rock Star intervention at the start. Kindest from Bonnie Scotland. Joe
Love and kindness from all your devoted army in Britain. For so long I struggled using a 5\32 file getting a good edge . Game changer using 3\16. Big shout out for The Tinman reaching 20,000 subscribers.
Where abouts in Wales are you from? I'm from Llangorse. Got a small saw that I always thought the file was too small for, going to do it Billy Ray way now.
Workin wonders with a file. Gettin some snow here also Buckin. Thank you sir picked this up on the last video you did this on. There is so much info in your past videos it's crazy and fun to go back and watch. Always pick up a new little nugget of knowledge. Love ya brother. 🌲❤🌲✊🪓
Unpopular opinion but sometimes I get a great rippin', snortin', beastin' edge filing my 3/8 chain with a 3/16 file towards the end of its life. Gets that gullet nice and deep. Live and let live! Do what works! Stay safe tree guys!
I just started doing that..noticed i was hitting my chain links with the 3/8s file and had a chain snap.so figured id go down in file size with a old chain
This is a game changer for me. Always struggled with the 5/32 on my smaller saws. I tried the 3/16. Wow what a difference and so much easier! Thanks for the tip.
I listen to everything that you've ever told me and I cut way better than all my friends they are always jealous it's the Buchan way or no way it's all I know thanks for all the good advice over the years always tell my buddies a sharp chain is everything love wins👍
I’ve been felling trees for 30yrs, Billy continues to school me and (not to brag) but I am a professional feller. Billy thanks SO much for your great videos & your humor. GOD BLESS buddy & keep ‘em come’n 😀👍👏✌️
Buckin I was trying to figure out what file size to get today for my smaller saws, you nailed it thanks! I always felt that little 5/32” file was flimsy and hard to get a smooth cutting stroke without bending the file especially at the tang.
Yup, ha ha, found out by accident that the big file gets a nicer chip years back. Out felling and only had files for the big saw. Worked a treat on the mosquito sized topper. Thanks for the video!
Thanks Buckin, I’ve tried both. Like you I feel like I have to pull the smaller file up a little into the gullet. But I have been irritated at how the bigger file grabs at first until you’ve got rid of the bottom chisel. Thought I was doing something wrong. So long as it’s throwing chips, I’m a happy man.
Billy 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅🤣🤣😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣oh it hurrrts!!!! I can't get up off the floor I'm laughing so hard with your cutaway in that outfit playing that guitar and singing funniest damn thing you've ever done I'm still on the floor I can't get up I'm hurting that is awesome you just made my day
Dude buckin. You are so funny and chill you know your videos make me happy every time I watch . Your additude about life is really truly inspiring .thank you for being you
I love all your filing videos buckin thank you for all the advice ive learned a ton from you the past couple years. Everyone comes to me now for getting their saws sharp...i keep send them your way to sharpening school!
Dead right Buckin! Many episodes ago I caught you talking on the 3/16" filing. I admit at first I was puzzled as I always file fresh chain, so yeah the fit was weird. BOY what a difference the upsize file made to my sharpening. I like em a little hungry on the rakers and this really made the difference. Rock on!
I have been doing this same thing for years. Always step up one file size from factory suggestions size. Now I'm getting into hand square filing, must say I'm hooked on the square cut tooth.
Hello Would going one file size up go with any chain size? I use .325 chain. Factory says to use 3/16, should i use 7/32?? Seems like it may work better. Im still a rookie at filing. Learning a bunch from the channel.
Glorious!... I've never tried a 3/16" but I've always thought a 5/32" was too small and definitely flimsy for the task. I guess I'm guilty of just following the "power saw rules" and not breaking out of that to try something different. Thanks for sharing this tip and the many others. I always get an education watching your videos. Stay safe and God bless.
Hey Billy, I just did a video on your method of sharpening small chainsaws! It works great and I gave you all of the credit. Thank you for this awesome tip!
Buckin love the videos sir. I've come across a song by a band called steel woods and the song is called axe and Everytime I hear it I think of you and my grandfather two men that made a living with an axe.
Buckin, because of a video of yours I watched years ago, I can file a chain perfectly in maybe 10 minutes (22" bar) or less. I will never find a good way to thank you for your wisdom. Peace.
Awesome man! This is exactly what I thought when I was going to sharpen my first chain, (5/32)looks small. haha. The file profile wasn't filing the whole surface. Thanks Billy!
I file my low pro. 3/8 chains with a 3/16 file for about 3/4 of the chain life then I'll switch to 11/64. Same with the full size 3/8, I will use 7/32 for a bit more than 3/4 of the life then swap for a 13/64 till the end. I also don't pay much attention to the "wear line". I run my chains until I am missing 4 or 5 cutters in a row; until then they'll cut just fine.
you run your chain until it is worn down that much ? I would be very careful with that , because if they are worn down that much they can cut loose when you are bucking if they are worn too much . No telling where that little piece of shrapnel is going to go. It can happen
Billy, Buckin Billy Ray, the Woodman ... Love the gloves...! Essential clothing for outdoor work in the winter months. Yes the fingers are better to do intricate detail work, I'm always taking off the gloves, then putting back on. Fingerless are good to keep your hands warm and access to finger tips. Half my work day is glove repositioning. 😊 When it's time to take the gloves off, there's gonna be a serious ruckus. When it's time to put the gloves on there's gonna be some serious work gettin done. Just try to be serious when your doing dangerous work and you will be safe. There's always time to goof around and have a laugh, seriously. 😉 This is general info for public consumption, our master of ceremonies usually never wears gloves, that's why i had to make a big comment. Gloves are good, gloves are great, but they can get in the way sometimes. Get snagged, or get stuck in machinery, hinder your ability to grab small parts. But most of the time they will protect your fingers and hands. Be aware Be square (on the money) Care to dare
Good morning billy and friends love the videos billy and I love watching these videos were you show how to sharpen chainsaw chains also What’s the best angle to hold your file at compared to where your bar is also Do you try and file the little knob in front of the tooth down is that what I’m seeing hope you read my comment
Buckin, I though the hook of was too extreme on 3/8 LP on .050 chains using the 5/32 file so I've started using a 11/64 file. I had to order them through my Stihl dealer, Pferd also makes them.
If you have semi chisel oregon 3/8 lp chain your stuck with the 5/32 file, the cutters are smaller than on the full chisel stihl. The chain looks half worn out when new but they're dirt cheap.
There’s always a different way to get something done. It’s good to get as many opinions and tips from people with experience as possible! Keep an opened mind and learn! And remember,,,you can’t hear when your mouth’s open!
Buckin, I switched to the 3/16 file for 3/8 low profile after the last video you did about this. What a difference it made with my saw. Cuts a lot better, and much easier to sharpen. Thank you for showing us all this trick. One question I have is, what brand of files do you prefer to use? Thank you for all you do Buckin keep up the great work. 🤘🌳🪓
Great channel, thank you for the advice, I see that file guides are sold for sharpening chains (I never done this before, would you advise using a guide to keep the angle right? Or just get on with it. Greetings from England 👍
I will try 3/16 on my LP chain, with 5/32 file i can make very nice C, and deep inside in the gulet, but top plate never stay nice shape. Looking forward to try 3/16 to see, if that change top plate tooth... Peace, Love, Be kind 🪵💪❤️
Ive always used 3/16 for 325 chain, i also use my 3/16 on my worn 3/8 chain to get a nasty little gullet that cuts aggresive but fast. 7/32 on 3/8 untill worn ovcorse. Seems to work for me
Did you get your gloves from the pigeon lady from home alone? Hahaha must be a cold one, not everyday buckin breaks out his gloves. 🎄🎄🎄 I told you that didn’t I! Shaclank!
What about raker gauge for the smaller chains, i get confused which is needed as i use Millimetres. Even for the larger chains i don't have a clue, ones i've bought dont sit how they should, even those horrible ones that sit on top of the chain. I like the one you use Buckin, progressive one i believe but those aren't available in the UK due to tree felling not being as big as it is in US/Canade
