Best Cheap Humidors: Quality Cigar Storage That's Kind To Your Wallet
In our intro, Paul easily punches right through the flimsy bottom of a $20-$30 wooden humidor. This one wasn't worth the cardboard it was made from.
The thin cardboard construction of something like this will result in a horrendous amount of moisture exchange. However, we're here to show you options under $100 that are worth their price and more!
On the table, we have the Quality Importers Old World, a $70-$80 wooden humidor, but one with good construction. The Old World and the very similar Old Glory have proper seals which create a true humidor environment.
If your heart isn't set on wood, though, we recommend a tupperdor. A food-safe plastic container with airtight seals like the Sistema Klip-It we have here makes for excellent cigar storage. With Boveda packs, a Boveda Butler smart sensor, & Spanish cedar trays, it's about $70.
This is a complete storage solution for only as much the aforementioned wood humidor. If this is still outside your budget, you might try Boveda humidor bags. $15 will get you the large Boveda bag, with holds 60.
Boveda bags are also great for acclimating cigars before introducing them into a more permanent humidor. This avoids shocking your humidor's microclimate by introducing overly dry or moist cigars.
Note that ordinary Ziploc bags won't work, as they have too much moisture exchange. Boveda bags are barrier-laminated, so effectively no moisture will get in or out.
Travel humidors are another great budget solution, but oftentimes they have mediocre seals. The Xikar & Cigar Caddy we have here have decent seals-see links above for our recommended travel humidor!
You'll probably get the cheapest storage per cigar stored, however, from a coolidor. Here we have an Iris Remington 87 Quart, which holds 540 sticks. It has a watertight foam gasket & costs only $45.
Be careful when selecting a cooler for your coolidor, as many are not properly sealed on purpose. This is so that if children fall in, they don't suffocate.
None of these cheap storage solutions have their own cooling elements, so they need to be in a temperature-controlled room. A basement or chimney works well, as they tend to be cool but not cold, and of moderate humidity.

I have a 7-liter Sistema Tupperdore, and I love it. I keep two Boveda packs in there with some cedar spills on the bottom, and I have 65 cigars in there right now. Works great.

I use Le Parfait made in France parfait glass jars in various sizes with a 69 Boveda in them. Been doing the parfait jars for 30 years, displayed in temp controlled room on oak book case shelves, and out of sunlight. I apply a finger of tube silicon lube on the seals every couple years. The lever is large and they seal tight. Never a single issue and it's been 30 years. I recharge Bovedas in a Tupperware with a small open dish of tap water in it and place the Bovedas around it. Minerals in tap water do not evaporate into the air inside, but remain in the dish. Bovedas plump up in just a few days. I've been smoking premiums for 51 years, over 100k of them.

Hi Anthony, CP lives in France and swears by Le Parfait for storing pipe tobacco so it makes sense that it works for cigar storage. I believe that he also uses Le Parfait for storing coffee beans, sourdough, and when making limoncello and sloe gin. They're excellent jars and very versatile.

A question. In that sistema tupperdore. If you have 30-35 cigars. How many boveda packs would you put in be it 69 or 65. Boveda size: 60 gm per pack. And how often would you burp the tubs for fresh air and humidity build up reduction. Thank you

Hi Haris, Two packs should be fine. They offer two-way humidification so they absorb excess moisture. This means that you won't need to really open them to prevent humidity build-up unlike crystal gel style humidifiers. Just open it when you want a cigar and that should be ample. Opening a humidor too often can actually disrupt the biosphere that you create.

Hiya Guys, Just a quick question, I’ve got a selection of cigars in my regular wooden humidor, however I’ve purchased a few boxes of cigars recently and intend to keep them for a while before smoking and they won’t fit in my regular humidor. So I’ve gone down the Tupperware route with Boveda and some Spanish Cedar in there but should I keep the boxes sealed up or have them ajar to allow the humidified air to get to the cigars more easily? They are EL Cubans and look great in their box so I’d prefer to keep them in there as they were or perhaps should I remove them? - although I seems such a shame to do so... Any advice would be gratefully received😀

Hi Nick, It's entirely up to you. Boxes do allow for moisture exchange and will humidify in a tupperdor even when closed. However, the moisture exchange is faster when the boxes are slightly open. Either way, it should absolutely fine. For context, I have both opened and closed boxes inside a coolidor and have never noticed any difference. All the best, CP

One question I just got a Man of War 100 count Humidor As a gift and I seasoned it with the Boveda 84% Humidor Seasoning packs (4) 1 per 25 cigars and i used 2 Boveda Calibration Kit because i have 2 meters the one that came with the unit and Digital meter and all of that is working well. This all took place 3 weeks ago. But now that it is seasoned I can’t get the Humidity Below 79 / 78 I have left the Top Open for 3 to 4 hours. But when I close the lid the humidity go’s back up can you please tell me what I am doing wrong. I am new to the wood humidor thing. I just don’t want to ruin all the cigars I have in there. I have about 65 good cigars in it. I also have 3 old original cuban cigars that came from Cuba they are dryers out but I still want to keep them if you know what I mean. Thanks for your time in this matter Pittsy

Hi there, No worries and sorry for the late reply! First of all, I recommend watching a video on rehydrating old cigars where we cover this subject: They could still be saved so don't throw them away but avoid mixing them with your other cigars! As for the humidity, has it balanced out? This happens occasionally after seasoning. Boveda are confident that you can just throw your cigars in the humidor with regular packs after seasoning, which creates a biosphere that balances out the RH. If this doesn't work within three or four days, air the humidor for about 30 minutes to an hour every day or just leave it with regular Boveda packs inside until it balances out. However, keep your cigars in a tupperdor or bag while you do this as the spikes and drops in humidity can damage them. Best, CP

As long as it's air-tight with a rubber gasket that should be fine. For instance, CP uses a Le Parfait mason jar for his pipe tobacco!

@@Bespokeunit 😁😁😁 Been using Le Parfait for 30 years, the big jars for my sticks. Use 69 Boveda in them and display on oak bookcase shelves in temp-controlled room, out of sunlight. Have smoked premiums for 51 years, over 100k of them. I confess to lighting them all with a petrol SLIM, 1958 solid gold Zippo, using their reformulated fuel. I get zero imparted taste and the Slim Zippo has a perfect soft flame size for cigar lighting, with the glass wick trimmed even with chimney top. I also often use a solid sterling Slim, which can still be gotten on places like Ebay for $100 or less.

Its standard, if you are going to do something like that make sure its airtight seal and it has no plastic smell, there is methods of removing the plastic smells,

Like Randomated said, it's standard but we tested a few and found that the Sistema Klip-It (amzn.to/2RW5Tyk) is by far the best quality. It's airtight with lots of clips to ensure a good seal and is made for quality plastic that doesn't smell or degrade. Best, CP
