About a year ago, after much deliberation, I bit the bullet and bought a 940 (green aluminum scales). It has been in my pocket everyday since. I couldn't be happier and I haven't even looked at buying another edc knife. I've just had to touch it up with my sharpmaker a few times and it's right back to shaving sharp, I love the S30V. I couldn't be happier with my knife.
I agree that the knife is great, but you should look into the Kizer sunburst or sliver. They are longer blades with s30 and s35vn and are around the $70 to $150 range. But I would also like to see you review a few Kizer knives, so I can have something good to watch.
The Green & Purple are the topping on an awesome piece of cake for the original 940. That being said I love my 940-2 because I've wanted a G-10 version from the first time I saw one years ago as a KW Exclusive!
The 940 was my first "grail" knife. But then the addiction hit and now I have a few Sebenzas. Kinda pathetic that my $170-200 knives are now my "beater" knives.
Willing to sell? It's gonna be my first proper high end pocket knife (have a few Leathermans) and any discount, no matter how small, would be greatly welcome
Haha thats so funny. I have the same problem lol. Just bought a Rockstead and im not using it yet because i wanna keep it looking beautiful for a little bit. started out in highschool with a benchmade auto that i bought from someone for 20 bucks......yea they probably stole it and didnt know what they had. anyways now 130 to 200 are my beater knives. lol
I just received this BM 940 knife today 05/17/2019 and it is absolutely beautiful with the green aluminum scales and purple back spacer with the fantastic axis lock deployment is very smooth and it is extremely razor sharp this is my 3rd BM and not my last. :-)
I know it's an old video but I sold my 940-2. For me, the ergos are worse then the 940..I'm a big guy with big hands.. I found the G10 kind of slick. Also, the handles are flat where the 940s have ridges on them. The 940-2 was awkward for me to open/close due to flatness and being slick.. The 940 works better.. They are both good in have once opened.. I haven't seen this much but my 940-2 had a defect on G10 pattern and I've seen at least 2 others with same defect including an REI G10 model.. The G10 patterns are missing on show side around the bolster/axis lock area.. Doesn't effect grip but is unsightly and shouldnt happen on a $170 knife... Good Review...
Thomas Landers gotta agree, I had the REI G-10 version and was very underwhelmed by it. Recently picked up the original 940 and the carbon fiber 940-1 and I really prefer the aluminum model for daily carry. It’s just better in hand in my opinion. The green and the purple backspacer really grow on you. I do appreciate that Benchmade is offering some variety at different price points.
My 940 has a BM deep carry clip so nothing sticks out of my pocket except the clip so everyone still knows I have a knife! I also have the 940-1 Carbon Fiber as my gentleman's dress knife (also deep carry with an after market Ti clip) and love them both. I think if I ever wanted the G-10, I would go with the knifeworks exclusive blue/black version and I bet you guessed it. I would add the same clip. Thanks for the review!
Benchmade is out of touch with it prices. I like they but not going to spend that much money for Benchmade that’s over price there are other that are great knives for a lot less money
I have the 940-1. I picked it up at 20% off. All three models are priced high. Personally, I feel like the 940-2 should have S35VN and the regular 940 should have 20CV for the price point. The 940-1 should be closer to $225 for the materials used. About what I paid for it.
I have a Benchmade 940-1. I put a deep carry clip on it. But I usually just drop it in my pocket when working. However, when I’m not working, I use the clip. I love the blade shape and overall size of the knife. It’s an expensive knife and kinda hard to resharpen, however, I find it to be one of the most useful knives I’ve ever used. Obviously, it doesn’t do everything. It isn’t designed to do everything. However, it does every task in my normal activities very well, and stays sharp for a long time. I only need other knives when doing more specialized things like cutting off branches on trees and things of that nature. The 940-2 I haven’t used, so I can’t speak to the blade steel, or the G-10. However, I do know I that generally I like G-10. And I’m pretty sure the Blade steel is very good. I can speak to the design and overall handling characteristics. Both are excellent. You need to learn how to use the shape of the blade. It’s shape will allow you to use the back of it for some things, if you are careful. Also, the point is pretty good for lots of tasks, but isn’t super pointy. It isn’t super pointy, but will pierce things, if used properly. I find that a super pointy knife is sometimes a hinderance. It seems to cause accidents, and isn’t as strong as a tip like the 940 knives. Also, you can’t use it to LIGHTLY tighten screws and CAREFULLY open paint cans. I do both of those with my 940-1. (And, if you are wondering, my knife looks nearly new. I use it, Not abuse it.) I love the 940 design profile. I do plan to get a couple of the other models. Expensive yes, but I think the overall Benchmade 940 design is a lifetime everyday use knife design. My son already has his eyes on my 940-1. LOL
I bought this knife yesterday. The owner of the shop I bought it from told me to take it home for the weekend and handle it to see if I liked it cause I wasn't sure what I thought of it. (He just asked me not to cut anything with it, which I wasnt worried about it anyways). I liked the way it felt. I work security, & I wanted to really know how this would function as my backup security knife. My question for you is yes I know all knives are weapons. But do you think this knife can hold up as a self defense knife as needed. I even held it reverse grip & it felt pretty good. Can you give me your opinion on if this holds up as a self defense knife?? Thank you.
Hey Aaron, I love your reviews but I do have one suggestion. you should include whether or not a folder's spine can strike a ferro rod. I'm not sure if anyone else looks for that in a folder but personally I like knowing my EDC knife has that ability just in case something were to happen to my fixed blade
I love your videos! I’m looking for a nice EDC knife that I can use at work and for camping/fishing. I was looking at the Benchmade Osborne 940-2 or the Mini Freek 565-1. Which knife would you recommended or do you have other suggestions? Much appreciated!
Both the Osborne and Freek are great, classic knives. It almost comes down to which you like the looks of best, or which tip shape will be most useful to you. The Freek may be better for harder use due to its thicker blade. The Osborne is a great all around knife and so small and light in the pocket
zt 0707,boker plus kwaiken ait,I coouod go on,butvyou get the point,(hopefully).I to have the 940,and 943,and you are wrong-the 943 is the better slicer
After years of debate I finally bought the bullet today and bought the 940 in the original green with the backspacer. As soon as I held it I knew. There's something about this knife that just puts it above all others. Thanks for the great review and with helping to make the decision!
that aint cheap :[ Can you plz make a video that appeals to a budget of a 16yr old boy, maybe max of like 50 dollars "bang for your buck" edc knife 3 inches or so blade???
well you can get some good knives for 50 bucks i would check out buck, cold steel and kershaw those companies have several quality folders in that range and size :-D
I’ve used a 940 for a good while I broke down and bought a 9400 I wasn’t a fan of it. Your review is off same as all of them nobody cut cardboard up like that. That’s wasting time and time is money
I’m just saying as a real worker I would fire you instantly for cutting up cardboard like that what are you doing get to work. But the 940 is a really good work knife
I have the knifeworks blue/black contego and it is a beast. But I find the jimping is too aggressive. Need to wear a glove for any tasks longer than a couple of minutes.
I have that exact knife with the g10 and I love mine! Have been using mine for a year now and as a diesel technician I BEAT THE HELL out of it and still going strong
I'm about to ask a stupid question, forgive me I haven't been into folding knives that long, but what are so good about benchmade folders? Why would I buy a 940 instead of say a buck vantage pro for $120 less ( same steel, similar size, US made)? A disproportionate amount of people seem to love them compared to what they're offering ( steel, prices etc). For example I get cold steel (some good deals and some unusual styles), I get spyderco (some good deals and hard to find steels). And benchmade's got ...?
Benchmade's got AXIS lock....along with steel choices like the others. Ergonomics and Axis lock though are what differentiate them from others. Not sure Buck is a real competitor. Spyderco obviously gets any loss market share that Benchmade doesn't capture.
I would say g10 is way more abrasive and wears tooling much faster than aluminum. Aluminum really cuts like butter and the right type of tooling can stay last for months of use...
Bjorn Engels for a folder for using in the bush, I would check out the Kabar Jarosz folder. It is one of the toughest folders I have and is decent for the price ($50 or so).
@@johnagen3688 its been a long time since my comment. I never anded up buying a benshmade. But i did bought a handfull of other really cool folding knives (moostly from kizer(
Man you scraped the blade on the cement when you were cutting the cardboard! Well I guess you were testing it and that's something that might happen. It made me cringe to see it nonetheless.
That is not a good price ! Its like three times more than its worth ( production cost ) most all knives on the market are $50.00-100.00 knives . Some have stupid high prices as if they were custom designed knives ! That why I collect cones of stupid high priced production user knives ! Bencmade isnt as stupid high priced as some like sabenza but its still a butterfly tax price for no real reason ( maybe greed ) . I did get the old 940 green for $120 .closer to a fair price ! But I got it used because I didnt want to deal with benchmade crap quality control after the crooked river large and small . Thar large was toatlly un finished ! The mini was perfect until both lock spring broke ! And Ive hear tell of a guy that went to the knife store and had to try 9 knives of one model to find a good one ! I wonder did the knife store send the culls back to the company or send them out in the mail ?
With this review I am going to upgrade from my RAT2 to this, the rat is a great knife but I find that the aus8 steel is lacking now, rolls the tip edge way to easily. Thanks for this Aaron, answered many questions I had and of course I'll buy it with your amazon link.
I find the g10 scales really slick and the area where the spine meets the handle scales is uncomfortable. Why can't that area be flush? Terrible design.
