I miss breakfast pizza!! I Know it's strange but it's because it reminded me of the only decent meals I had besides beans and cornbread which I was absolutely sick of because we are it half the week, the BEST meals I ever had growing up poor was the meals my dad made, which he learned from my nanny, (she got MS in her early twenties and was SUCH a talented cook as well as musician and artist and gymnast and she taught my dad everything before she got too bad, and then more after she got too bad off to do it herself) on the weekends when he had days off. He'd cook pancakes, and biscuits and GRAVY, sausage or red eye and eggs however we wanted and bacon if we were not eating sausage, and fresh garden tomatoes sliced with salt and pepper. I wish I had liked the fresh home grown tomatoes better as a kid because it is one of my favorite foods now.

My great grandmother was one of the first cooks in our lunchroom and the food was wonderful. Those ladies really cooked the food and my great grandmother had always worked as a cook in several businesses. I was 1 of 5 kids and my mom closed the door on lunch-packing once we had hot lunches!! 🤣. But I don't ever remember having these cookies at school. Grandma Alice was a wonderful baker and we always had homemade cakes, pies and baked cookies. She baked 3 pies for my Pap every morning, on a cast-iron wood-burning stove every morning before going to the school!! And she made me and my siblings eat every bite if we wanted seconds. We were held to the highest standard!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣😍 I make these cookies often!

Oatmeal no bake cookies, we sure love them here and yep first ate them too in the school lunchroom. OH those lunch ladies back in the day sure fed us some good homemade meals. I started headstart in the summer of 1967 or 68 and went all 8 years at the same school for elementary and middle school. My great aunt was a lunch room cook and my grandmother was a janitor. I cant remember if we had pizza, but I do recall we had what they called a submarine sandwich, which had ham and cheese with lettuce on a hot dog bun, oh boy we loved those. The chili was delicious but what stands out in my mind was the homemade Italian Spaghetti and homemade YEAST ROLLS!! Loved those days when we had chocolate milk and when we got to have ice cream in those little cups with the wooden spoon. Seems like by the time I got to high school the lunches were not as good. By the time my girls were in school the lunches were just horrible, every day was some kind of chicken nugget type stuff and it's still that way today. Hope ya'll are getting to enjoy some more snow, we are bracing for another few days of a winter storm.

Very good cookie. Your story about where your woodstove came from was great too. I had forgot, but when I was in grade school, the school could not afford a cook so some of the ladies would each cook for a week. My aunt, then my grandmother, and several of my friend's mothers would each cook. I got to where I could tell by the food who did the cooking. They were all good cooks, but times were different then. Thank you, you bring back a lot of memories for me.

These are a Christmas tradition for my family!! My husband makes them and his famous hot chocolate every year when we decorate our tree. Of course, that's not the only time we eat them. My granny always made them when I was growing up. Every year for Halloween we would run over to granny's and she would have a BIG bowl full of chocolate oatmeal cookies all individually wrapped in tin foil. That's what she would hand out to all the kids.

I am 73 and I went to a rural elementary school where everyone's grandma cooked in the cafeteria. The food was phenomenal. Chili and a peanut butter sandwich. Chicken and gravy over biscuits. They made something called "mock turtle" sandwich. It was hot, sort of gooey, and served on a hamburger bun. I have no idea what they were, but sure did like them!

My Mommy made these for us when we were growing up/ She made the best and we all loved them. Two of my brothers asked her to make some and she told them she didn't have any peanut butter. This was back in the day when it was difficult to find a store open on Sundays so I think they were gone for about four hours or more. We live in Maryland near the Delaware line so they checked in Elkton, MD and then ventured across the state line into Newark Delaware where they finally found a store that was open and got that peanut butter. Knowing my brothers they may have stopped at homes and knocked on the doors to borrow a jar of peanut butter. Don't know where they found the peanut butter and brought it home to mommy and she made cookies for them. Mommy passed in 1999 but a lot of the women in the family still make them. Sweet mommy and family memories. I always ate in the lunch room. My blessed Aunt that I am named after was the cook. She was the best. Thanks for giving me a sweet trip down memory lane. I enjoy your show and your family. So sweet♥ I did not mention but we are originally from West Virginia, Born and raised there.

COW PATTIES! My aunt use to make these for us when I was a kid. I have looked for the recipe and the few I found were never just right. As I watched you make them the memories of her doing the same came clear in my mind. She would make them for a quick after school treat, or when an unexpected bunch of us would all show up at her house to play. She lived just a couple doors down, had 5 kids of her own, with a neighborhood full of kids. I can't ever remember not having these on a snow day during that time of my life. Thanks for sharing, always love watching, this one has warmed my heart and brought back so many good memories, and now I can have the cow patties that made us giggle as we ate them with a big cold glass of milk, or snow cream.

I call them no bake cookies. And yes I always ate in the cafeteria. I was raised in Ky. and we had the best cooks. Ahhhhh those hot yeast rolls. But I don’t remember them fixing these cookies. My favorite lunch room meal was spaghetti and salad with French dressing. And my favorite dessert was their chocolate sheet cakes with nuts. I always loved milk and on Fridays we were served chocolate milk. And remember those afternoon ice cream breaks. We never had the extra money for ice cream because there was 5 of us kids in school. But I learned that if I saved my lunch I could have 2 dime ice creams plus a nickel one! When I got into high school our lunches cost 35 cents so there were days my best friend and I would save our lunch money for a stop at the drug store for a cherry coke and a bag of Fritos! Thanks for bringing back some good school memories.

This is my first recipe I got from a babysitter, when I was 10 yrs old. It was handwritten. So I've been making these for 56 years. They were called candy cookies or jiffy candy back then. My recipe, said jiffy candy! I make those every year at Christmas, I also make potato candy. Hmm yummy to both recipes
@3251JOE
@3251JOE 2 года назад
Mom-mom made the chocolate oatmeal candy every Christmas. In school, I took my lunch some days and had the plate lunch others. My favorites were what was called barbeque sandwich, Sloppy Joe on a hamburger bun, fish sticks and chili con carne. Once in a while, the plate lunch included a small pleated paper cup of pumpkin fluff, sweetened canned pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice folded into Dream Whip or whipped cream. My all -time favorite dessert was apple crisp. In all the years since I graduated high school, I've never tasted better. In the early grades, you could buy Dixie cups for a nickel. Half chocolate and half vanilla ice cream in a waxed paper cup with a flat wooden spoon. I would always eat the chocolate first, then stir the vanilla with the spoon until it was soft and creamy. It is shameful that today's children aren't served the cooked from scratch lunches we enjoyed.

I love these cookies, during my two junior high school years the cooks made them without chocolate and they were just peanut butter oatmeal cookies and they were very different from what I got it home. I actually ask for the recipe from one of the cooks and she said just tell Mom to forget the cocoa. It is a nice change and it is real peanut buttery without the cocoa even with the just a little bit of peanut butter that's in them. My mom thought that I had mistaken the recipe and looked up the cook that told me and she said yeah just leave the cocoa out. I still enjoy them once in awhile I prefer the cocoa ones but the other ones are a nice change real fast, boy I wish my Cooks in elementary school and Junior high would have made a cookbook that would be amazing,

My kids love no bake cookies. Even as adults they still get excited when momma makes them. I think a big batch for each of them might be in the near future. My favorite school meal was Chicken and noodles with yeast rolls. My mom couldn't make yeast rolls , she killed the yeast every time. So those big ole lunch room rolls were a real treat. My Momma made these chocolate cookies, she called No-bake Cookies, but w/out peanut butter and with some shredded coconut (but they weren't too sweet!) We were also treated to pies including meringue pies. As a teenager this Wisconsin farm girl made the best pies, to feed the men hired to help w/ the harvest. With perfectly browned & "scalloped "tops the meringue tasted sooo good, with the rest of the pie. And growing up in Anchorage, AK, they reminded me of drifted snow.✨ ...but don't be shy if you sometimes burn food and have to salvage it. My momma worked outside the home and on occasion burned food, but my sister & I CHERISH the GIFT of her terrific food! Our mom lived to 93 yrs. old, we deeply miss her.🕊️ We love our Momma & the food she made with Love.❤️💕

This looks great! I am invited for dinner tomorrow and need something easy to bring with. My lunchroom memory is Mr. Means, our elementary school principal, standing next to the trash bin where we would throw out our trash after finishing lunch. He would shake every kid's milk carton and if the milk carton was not empty , he would send you back to the table to finish your milk. Amazing example of how the school took the students' health seriously back then.

It’s government peanut butter and, it’s probably the same peanut butter, I had when, I went to school. The reason it doesn’t taste like anything you buy in the store if you would open the big metal can you would see why, the lunch ladies have to stir it up a bit before they spread it on the bread to make sandwiches. Notice, with that peanut butter you don’t necessarily need jelly? It has honey in it! Yep, they used to give it out with government commodities when, back in the days when, they gave out the cheese, when, they added other commodities to the mix along with the cheese. I always ate more peanut butter when, we had it because, I love honey, I always thought it was the best peanut butter.

My husband grew up eating these at his school's lunchroom too. We call them no bake cookies but our friends call them Charlie Browns. My recipe is very similar to yours, except I use 1/4 cup of Hershey's Special Dark cocoa in mine, always use evaporated milk and prefer salted butter.

My Mom made these without the cocoa and that was my favorite. You brought back a fond memory of my Mom and I truly appreciate it. I grew up in Kentucky andI love watching your videos. So many of the sayings, stories and recipes are the same as yours. I had never heard of the Georgia Candy Squash until I saw your video. I ordered the seeds for them from Amazon for only $3.00. Oh these definitely bring back memories. I usually took my lunch growing up (peanut butter and jelly) but I suspect more due to finances than anything else. I remember making them for my own family in the 70's but don't know where I first heard of them. I will definitely make these for Christmas this year. Thanks for the memories.

I loved the soup and toasted cheese on soup day 😋 I loved the cafeteria lady's they knew every kid by name. Such wonderful memories and years. I remember that my mother would fix macaroni and home canned tomatoes 🍅. Yummy. Can I order a dozen! I think I have just gained weight from watching the 😀 I used to love the pizza also. I grew up in McDowell Co, WV. Our elementary school lunch rooms head cook was Mrs. Sally Wilson. She was there when my mom, aunts, uncles, and cousins went to the same school in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s (I went there in the early 1960s). She made the same cookies plus potato soup with PBJ sandwiches. She retired when I was in 2nd grade then we had Mrs. Rotzi (she was a great cook too). Thanks for the memories.

Hey Ms Tipper , I LOVE THOSE COOKIES !! I always thought of them as Missouri mud cookies, some put corn flakes in them to In Indiana they call them hay stacks , little different amounts of ingredients though I like them ice cold out of the refrigerator, although I never passed up a spatula used in the making of said cookies Us kids would fight over who got the big spoon at grandmas when she made cookies We fought so bad one time , she told us to hush or no body git it , well we didnt , and she proceeded to lick that big spoon right in front of all us kids . We all sat there , mouths agape , watching her lick that spoon clean. We all went and pouted in the living room after that. She let us brood fir a bit before she called us all into the kitchen fir cookies and milk Good memories of so long ago !! We always had the frozen , tin foil $.50 cent lunches when I grew up , that and Stewart sandwiches, which were frozen and reheated in a special oven , they weren't that bad , junior high , same thing, but we also had the concession line . You could get a Frost type shake and all kinds of dings dongs and other type hostess style goodies High school we got real food I guess , some if it was good , some was bad Pizza was good , the spaghetti ok, but mine seemed to always have the bay leaf in it . Memories of elementary / middle school cafeteria time . My great Aunt Jeanee ran the lunchroom, little round 5 ft nothin Hungarian lady , were most of the kids were taller than her . Ran it like a drill seargent , , but a drill seargent that gave out plenty of hugs too . Always used those big dust mops to sweep the floor , and those big long fold up white tables that had the benches attached and wheels so you could roll them out of the way to sweep. And lastly the wooded ramp / platform right next to the big roll off dumpster. So the kids could throw out the trash without getting it all over the place . All good memories !! Take care and God Bless BigMike

I have a STORY for you, about those very cookies. My Aunt Betty never had children, so my brother and I were given all the love and spoilin' her heart could release. She rarely ever told us, "no." These were my favorite, right after a bowl of Chef Boyardee Ravioli or Kraft Macaroni. One day she made a batch, and I'm guessin' it'd been a while, because my mouth drooled painfully the whole time she worked on them. She would place them in the large, deep, egg-shaped Tupperware container with rows of parchment paper in between. I believe it was at least 6 or 7 inches deep. She did force me to wait for them to set up and cool, tellin' me they would taste bad if I ate them before they were hard. I waited, impatiently. That particular time, I was able to wait strangely longer than I normally would, so when I thought they might be ready, my mouth was waterin'. I nearly cried with delight at the first taste. Hers always had that crisp snap, somewhat similar to a piece of Hershey bar, breakin' in the middle. I probably ate 3 or 4 before taking a breath, or before she noticed. I remember thinkin' that one LAYER was a reasonable servin' , and decided that a partial testin' of the SECOND LAYER would be alright. I kept goin', and goin' until my appetite was finally satisfied. In reality, I had eaten enough cookies to send me straight to the grave, but I felt wonderful! Mom came to pick me up, and I don't remember why my little brother wasn't there to enjoy the marvelous treat. He might have reduced my founderin'. 😂 We only lived a couple hundred yards up the road. I don't believe I'd been home 30 minutes when I found myself hot and more than a little dizzy. I got to my Mom's bathroom, lickety split, just as a volcano of chocolatey goodness erupted from my 10 year old stomach. I don't ever recall throwin' up that much before or since, and that was 37 years ago. Mom wiped my forehead and mouth with a cold wash rag and asked me "what on EARTH I had eaten.' Once I told her, she understood. She immediately got on the phone to her sister. In fact, I'd eaten more than HALF of that container!! I don't think it was a pleasant conversation in the least, and I was always much more careful about the number of cow patties I ate. Poor Aunt Betty. She was my angel. ♥️

I started to school in 1952. We had the best lunches ever. They cooked just like my grandmother did. My grandmother lived with us and raise my brother and myself while mother and daddy were working. Mother and Daddy both came home every day for lunch. My grandmother cooked three square meals a day. We never had meat at every meal, but we always had vegetables galore. The women at the lunchroom always cooked vegetables, and sometimes even cornbread. Usually we had a piece of bread dipped in butter that the government had given the school. Everyone always look forward to that buttered bread. It was so good. We also always had a dessert that was homemade and absolutely delicious. I think it’s a crying shame that I would children today have pizza and things that you buy at McDonald’s and other places that I adds to the obesity of their generation.

My Grandmother made these for her kids in 30s & 40s. My Mother made these for us kids in the 60s. I made them for my kids and now they make them for me! We knew them as Choco. Oatmeal cookies. Spoon on waxed paper on tray/ plate and put in fridge to cool and harden. Also you are the first person to remember the square lunchroom pizza! Was the first pizza I ever ate and loved it cause it barely had spices on it. Didn't know back then I had an oregano allergy. Our town had a Toms pizza joint - 1 slice for 10 cents..but covered in oregano and I hated it. Mothers desserts we're wonderful..We called her 7 minute frosting "cussing icing" cause she always did when she made it! Put that on chocolate cake,, yummy! Thanks for the memories!!

I grew up in Elbert County, Georgia. We did not have these in our school lunchroom. My favorite lunchroom meal was the very occasional grilled cheese sandwich with vegetable soup. My mom made these oatmeal cookies at home. She was an inventive cook who loved to vary recipes. Sometimes she put in the peanut butter. Sometimes she left it out and only used the cocoa powder, so they were very chocolate. Sometimes she substituted coconut or pecans for the peanut butter. And my brothers, sisters, Dad and I loved all the versions!

My husband and I still reminisce about eating in our schools' cafeterias - as they were called. We were in the same district but different schools but most of the foods were the same and they made the best chili beans, tacos, and turkey gravy and mashed potatoes. I would pay for that chili bean recipe today. He always ate in the cafeteria as he lived out in the country and rode the bus but I usually walked home about half a block and had lunch with my mom and later with my brother's babysitter. We don't remember desserts being served, maybe it was fruit. I never heard of no bake cookies until my neighbor gave me a copy of her church cookbook. Now I make them a few time per year....delicious.

It was the only thing I knew how to cook when we got married in the early 70s. My mother started making them and she'd add in chopped pecans, which was wonderful. Sometimes I add coconut. And on a hot day, I'll put some fresh batter on a buttered plate and set them in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Makes an almost frozen treat.

😂 salamander farmer! Once your no-bake cookies reach the desired consistency, transfer them to an airtight container, like Tupperware. This will prevent them from becoming overly firm and crummy over time! It’s the best thing I ever discovered! Thank you!
