My husbands aunt had a similar recipe. She put the dough into empty frozen juice cans to freeze. Then she would thaw a can to slice and bake. I don’t think people use much frozen juice anymore, I can’t remember the last time I bought it. It used to be a staple for a lot of people. I think I will make your recipe this weekend. No need to freeze the dough. I’m sure we will eat all of the cookies. ❤️
I've also wondered about frozen juice concentrate falling out of favor. Seems to me fresher and more nutritious than the widely available shelf-stable bottles of reconstituted concentrate. I rarely drink fruit juice but sometimes would like a little for a recipe. What little I still see for sale I hardly consider affordable. Anyway, I hope this finds you and everyone real well :)
I remember a story about a lady who had a cookie recipe. Everybody wanted it but, she stated “I’m going take this to my grave”. When she died, the recipe appeared on her headstone. I wish I had my Mamaw’s pumpkin pie, cherry yum yum, and Japanese fruit pie recipes.
This made me think of my Great Aunt Edna....she had similar cookies in her fridge, always! Her husband would come home from work every evening and she would have 6 warm cookies coming out of the oven waiting for him. Oh what a doll she was...sure have missed her over the years.
I totally agree with you that it is important to write the recipes down for your family. My grandmother always used to make a slice with a recipe from her head. After she died all the grandchildren desperately wanted the recipe but we thought it was gone. Until my cousin found it written down years later. Now we all make it regularly to remember our wonderful grandma.
This is the exact recipe that my “Aunt” Shirley has made forever. She called them Refrigerator Oatmeal Cookies. She makes exactly as your Dolly’s recipe. She made into 2 logs, so ended up being more like a rectangle with rounded edges. She is turning 96 in a few weeks and sadly is the last of that generation in our family. She still bakes and cooks, just not as much anymore. ❤️
I lost my mom when I was 17 years old. We would always get together, with my older sister during deer season, when dad and my sisters husband would go hunting. We would bake and craft. One of the recipes we made was Christmas cake ( date and walnut cake ). It is written in my moms hand writing ,so I laminated it. It is a very cherished recipe to me. And is love by many who have had it since.
Some years ago before my grandmother passed away she gave me three of her cookbooks. She has hand written notes though out them all and are a treat whenever I come across them. I always remember her handwriting from birthday card i received from her as a boy. She passed away in 2017
@@CelebratingAppalachia I didn't know at the time but today it is one of my favorite things along with the Scofield bible she gave to me in 1986. I was 18 and she signed and dedicated to me
In the middle of WWII I was born in June of 1943. During the war everything we consumed was rationed. Mama had a recipe for "Ice Box Cookies". It was made using bacon grease as shortening, because shortening and lard were both hard to come by. They had pecans in them. She would make them, wrap them in wax paper and then put them in the refrigerator for a few hours. The taste grew on me as I grew older. I love oatmeal-raisin cookies. My wife said our kids reminded her of baby birds when she went into the kitchen. They'd show up and open their mouths when they heard mama rattling pots and pans. Catie and Corie are your baby birds, Tipper.
Chocolate chips in these!! I’m making these the next time all the kids are home from university…or perhaps make a batch for the two youngest and I 🤣 to test them ;)
Just a thought for Kattie about her rings she might enjoy. In the past I did wood carvings. I really enjoyed when the new owner would send me a picture of how they had displayed the carvings in their home. I used to ask for them to send the pictures and people were happy to oblige. I thought I'd pass this along and Katie might enjoy getting a picture of her ring customers showing off their new rings. God bless all.
I miss baking. It’s hard sitting in a chair with the counter top high. I have a red kitchen aid mixer! A blessing! Wish I had a daughter to pass all my things down too. I have accumulated so much kitchen cooking things , books and jewelry. I’ve never found anyone special to leave it all too! Seems my family all either died or we never knew each other. I wish we had stayed closer. Sad when you live hundreds of miles away.
I am amazed....this is the exact same recipe that my mother made when I was young and was my favorite. When I first was married and wanted to make them, I asked her for the recipe and she gave me the cookbook she had used, which was the 1947 Better Homes and Gardens she got for a wedding present. I kept that cookbook for many years just for that recipe, and it was indeed called oatmeal crispies! I handed it down to my daughter, don't know if it's gone any further since she only had a son and he's not married yet. They were so delicious. I used to freeze them in rolls and just cut off slices when I wanted some fresh cookies. So fun to see this!
I have my Mummum’s “Ice box cookie recipe”. Basically the same with 5 or 6 variations. She came from Scotland, grew up in Kansas, lived most of her life in NC. I think this a generational and Depression classic. TY! 🤗
I love the idea of laminated recipes! My brother still lives in the house I grew up in and when I visited last year I found a bunch of recipes that my mom(who passed 13 years ago) had written out on lined paper(so faded now) when she was first married. It had to be about 1945 when she was 24. I took them home and I really treasure them. There are a couple pages with about 4 types of pumpkin pie and I have yet to try and make them! Anyway, I thank you for this wonderful idea to preserve her recipes. Love your channel because of your sweet nature, your wealth of knowledge, your beautiful property and lovely family of course! You’ll never know how much peace I get just watching your videos!
Seriously I don't know what it is about you but every time I watch you I am just so moved by all your wonderful family memories and stories and it reminds me to remember to appreciate all the little good things in life.
My dear Grandmother had a coal stove, and a gift from God. She could bake cookies that would make a child run from the back-40! Two of my favorite were Peanut Butter cookies, and her Snickerdoodle cookies. A simpler time. Thanks for the memories.😊edit: A tip of the hat to you, for making it from one countertop to the other with cling-wrap, without it clinging to itself past the point of usefulness!!🥇🏆👏👏👏👏
Nothing like warm cookies and cold milk! I baked your black walnut cookies at Christmas. They were so delicious and brought back memories of the ones my grandmother made when I was a little girl.
I made your butterscotch pie today and I couldn’t believe how good it set up . Mine never did . It was so good too . I am going to try the chocolate version too . Thanks for sharing the recipe .
Mmmm, Mmmm ,Mmmm Fantastic that you are flying the flag for Appalachian Fare 💖 My wife and I stumbled upon your channel recently and were instantly hooked Love from Australia 🇦🇺💙❤️🩶🇺🇲
These are my favorite cookie! I can remember, not a single auntie in my neck of the woods, would ever hear of not having this recipe in their fridge! Of course, my mother, was a constant visitor to see her sisters…boy was I glad she did! Always a fresh, hot, cookie was served with either ice cold milk or coffee. Yum! Thanks for the memories…you’ve done it again! Lol
A local library has an engraving machine. They offered a class before Christmas to engrave cutting boards with handwritten family receipes. What a wonderful gifts that could be past down.
In my family, we only had home-made cookies at Christmas. Chocolate chip, peanut butter, sugar cakes, ginger cakes, no-bake chocolate, peanut butter and oatmeal, and oatmeal were the usuals. Mom-mom's oatmeal cookies were thicker and chewier than what your recipe made. The rest of the year, Mom-mom would have box of A & P store sandwich cookies, usually mixed chocolate and vanilla, on hand for snacks. She dipped hers in coffee or hot tea while I always had a glass of milk with mine. To my way of thinking, you can't really have one without the other.
Your cookies look so yummy! I make alot of oatmeal cookies for church, school, community groups, friends, family and more. I make different versions, shredded coconut, raisin, chocolate chips, and walnut. My Oatmeal cookies are sprinkled with cinnamon also. Thanks.
Katie , I have earrings , a ring, and a beautiful agate necklace you made me from my Lake Michigan stone. You are an artist and your work is so beautiful! Take your time it is appreciated!.☀️👍
Now, ladies, here I sit at 8:30pm listening to y’all smack on those delicious cookies. It’s too late to cook any much less eat them. I’ll just have to watch you 3 and be jealous.😉
We have a red rice recipe from my side of the family and a wing sauce recipe my sister in law passed to me shortly before she passed. Both are treasured.
Doing some figuring! What a sweet voice. When my in-laws passed away we inherited their home and everything in it , my most cherished item, is her recipe box.❤
We have oat biscuits here in Australia called Anzac Biscuits. They are so good too! They used to be shipped to the troops in WW1 to supplement their diet. These old recipes are always the best aren't they?!
I love oatmeal cookies. I’ll have to try these. I don’t drink milk either but would be good with coffee. 😊 You just can’t beat the older recipes. Thanks!
So many commonalities living in Appalachia! My great grandmothers dipped snuff. Those snuff jars lined shelves in their homes. Can’t wait to try Dolly’s cookie recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Those cookies look delicious! I love chewy cookies and anything oatmeal! I like milk and could eat a bunch of those with a cold glass of milk ...thanks tipper! God bless y'all..🙏❤
I love crisp cookies...These look so yummy!!! I'm trying these for sure!!! I love ice cream with oatmeal cookies and sometimes make an ice cream cookie sandwich!!! Thanks for sharing this wonderful family recipe!.. My mother passed down a family recipe to our family...Saucepan Scotties, basically a blond brownie...Mom made them all the time for our lunch pails and we still enjoy them today and they make us think of Mom who sadly left us 5 years ago.
My grandmother would make oatmeL crisp cookies but she would add some molasses to the dough. I just like oatmeal cookies. Always my favorite. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
I love oatmeal cookies! Homemade is best, I’ve even used them as fuel before a long run or for breakfast. Thank you so much for sharing your family’s history.
Amazing cookies!! I love these "old" recipes. They are the best. My have my mommaw's cookbooks with her handwritten notes and her original recipes. Truly priceless treasures. Thank you for you and your family continuing to share these wonderful ways of living!!❤
I kept thinking a pint of ice cream the round kind sliced, and put between warm oatmeal cookies, yum. Thank you for sharing another of your family recipe's with us.
Thanks Tipper, I think I'll make these with my girls this weekend. I try to include them when I make cookies, they be so happy to just be in the kitchen with me The joy on their face, overwhelms my Heart. My oldest is 11, my youngest is 4. But my boys love making Peanut butter cookies. I'm treasuring every minute because they seem to be growing up so fast. Seeing you and your Daughters eating cookies, share memories is so Sweet. God Bless all of you. Love, respect and positivity always. I need to order your cook book.👍🙂. Vee.✌️🕯️💕✨🙂👋.
My husband's family had a recipe very much like this. Very good cookies sometimes we would make sandwich cookies with homemade marshmallow frosting. Thank you for sharing the old recipes
That is my oatmeal cookie recipe! My mother-in-law gave it to me and she called hers Oatmeal Rocks. She does add raisins and pecans in hers at different times. I guess when she had the extra nuts and raisins. Thanks for posting. I need to make some of those.
This was so enjoyable. You and your daughters are very sweet. My mom made something similar but also used Rice Krispies. Gonna try these soon! Thank you!
Tipper, my wife just made these and I swear they're the best oatmeal cookies I ever ate in my life -- and I've eaten more than my fair share from numerous different cooks! I like them chewy as a rule, but I'd eat these burnt to a fare-thee-well, or even off the floor [ask me how I know].
I’ve been making that recipe for 40 years and it was an old recipe that many years ago! Try throwing a cup of chocolate chips in the mix. You will not regret it! Those cookies have earned me the family and friend favorite cookie award! Haha! Happy baking!
Hey Tipper...I was watching the video at lunch, but will watch it again when I get home so I can see everything better...I love oatmeal cookies.. thanks for sharing 🍪 😊
Oh my, this recipe has been in my family for many years called oatmeal icebox cookies. we add nuts, either roasted pecans or roasted peanuts. Just like your recipe, we roll in 2 logs and then wrap in wax paper. Put in the freezer for a few hrs, then pull out, cut cold, and just cook how many you want to cook. Thank you for sharing
Please thank Miss Cindy for us. Delish cookie! Thanks Tipper😊 p.s. Thanks Katie for your lovely jewelry. I’ve bought several pieces. Good you had a cookie break!
Probably have to make them this weekend. Glad your family saved the recipe. I value all old recipes, cutting off of plants and stuff like that. Thanks for sharing!
I have one of my great grandmother's snuff glasses. We've drunk out of them all my life. Now I use it to measure out buttermilk every day. I don't like buttermilk, but I drink it for the gut bacteria. And I always think of the decades of women in my ancestry who've drunk out of that glass.
Thanks for the recipe. I have one very similar. One Christmas I baked over 1,000 for the guys I worked with. I baked cookies for them every night. I was a drafting clerk at Texas Instruments, many many years ago!! They were great guys.
Oatmeal is my favourite cookie! Love when they're a little chewy 😁 They're even tastier with raisins. You should try making Welsh cakes, I think you'd like them a lot! ❤️
Tis cookie recipe sounds good !! I read one time , that it's the sign of a good cook, when they scrape the bowl. I like to, I hate to waste ingredients. Thanks for sharing.
