Beautiful, Excellebt, Congrats on the research for the bkgd of each flag and all the symbolism. How about Japan? They have some of the SIMPLEST BUT STRONGEST heraldic and pennant stuff?

A funny side note is that the animal on the flag of Vannes (the cute flag) is actually an ermine wearing an ermine cloak. The animal is called an ermine and it's the symbol of the region of Brittany (Vannes is in Brittany) but the funny part is that the symbol often displayed on breton flags such as the regional flag or the flag of Rennes is the stylized representation of an ermine (it's the tip of their tail sewed on the rest of the ermine's white fur as the nobles wore it in the Middle Ages)

I think it's important to say that, nearly every city in France has a coat of arms, but that flags are in fact very rare, because for each city a coat of arms already exists.

I think the city of Marseille has this flag also because it was founded by the Greeks. It is called "La Cité Phocéenne" (=the Phocean city), in reference to the greek kingdom which founded Marseille. You can find in Marseille's flag the national colors of Greece(white and blue), and a cross just like in the Greek flag.

Although the origin of the fleur-de-lis is unclear, it has retained an association with French nobility. It is widely used in French city emblems as in the coat of arms of the city of Lille, Saint-Denis, Brest, Clermont-Ferrand, Boulogne-Billancourt, and Calais. Some cities that had been particularly faithful to the French Crown were awarded a heraldic augmentation of two or three fleurs-de-lis on the chief of their coat of arms; such cities include Paris, Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Reims, Le Havre, Angers, Le Mans, Aix-en-Provence, Tours, Limoges, Amiens, Orléans, Rouen, Argenteuil, Poitiers, Chartres, and Laon, among others.

Bottom Left: The red flag with a yellow cross is for the city of Toulouse. It's at 2:13 in this video Bottom Right: St. Gerorge type flag is for the city of Boulogne-Sur-Mer and it's at 2:24 in this video
