The standard cam buckle straps that come with climbing sticks work totally fine, but there are better options in my opinion for mobile, run-and-gun hunters. I've done videos on the rope mod before, but now there are newer options to discuss as well. In particular, the Versa Lite strap and amsteel daisy chain both offer quicker and easier attachment than a typical rope mod. From a weight perspective, the amsteel daisy chain is the clear winner at less than an ounce, but all methods have some pros and cons that I discuss in the video.

Love those versa lite straps. You should make a new climbing setup video. One where it shows how you setup in the tree with your saddle setup from start to finish.

Great comparison video. I too made my own 7/64 a steel daisy chain and love it. I braid them while watching a ball game or something and it goes fairly quick. I personally chose orange as it helps me spot my tree in the dark in the am. I don’t find that it makes any difference to the deer. Thanks again. Have a great season.

bought my sticks used and they came with the rope mod. I think i am the only guy who upgraded to the "cam strap mod". I don't care about saving ounces, and with the cams you can get the stick tight on crooked trees.

Amsteel is meant for a straight line pull, stronger than wire cable , but as soon as it is in an abrasion environment, it will wear out quick. Even dirt and grit from bark will abrade it inside, meant to say this in my 1st comment, Haha!

I got a set of hawk sticks that came with daisy chains and I found myself struggling constantly using them. Every other tree would have the strap falling between loops. Had the steps kick out on me twice. Admittedly I'm far from graceful climbing a tree. I ended up replacing the daisy chains with cam straps since I'm more familiar with them and can't get them as tight as I'd like. Eventually I will look into the rope mod. Figured I'd give my experience using daisy chains.

You can pivot the stick to get the button to the closer loop, or you can run the webbing around the button through the loop then to the button.

I really like your videos: clear explanations, straight to the point. Thanks a lot. I'm curious as to why you prefer the shorter (20-inch) climbing sticks. I guess it's to get around branches and stuff, and also maybe they are easier to carry. But don't they limit how high you can get, unless you want to carry a lot of them?

I prefer the 24" sticks because it's about the longest step spacing I can do comfortably. I use amsteel aiders to get extra height. 3 sticks will get me to 20-24' at the top of the 3rd stick.

You can cinch the Versalink tight. Run the rage end back through one of the loops. Pull tight and wrap around the button. Then half hitch.

I’m using 7/64 Amsteel this year but instead of daisy chain I’ve made them into Woopie Slings. I have not climbed up into a tree with them yet, but the one I did wrap around the a tree seemed to hold just fine. (I also added 5 beads to give me something to through around the tree) getting down I’d my concerns and relieving the bite.

I'm 3 years late but if you use tablecloth weights that you can clip on the end of your rope to swing around the tree it makes it much easier!

I used the versa straps on my beast sticks and predator platform. I didn't like how hard it was to open loops to put them on versa buttons. Then if you got them on tight was a pain trying get them off. I'm going with the amsteel rope mods.

This is my question what do you do when the trees have ice on them. This does not happen that often but I would like to get some opinions on what would you do. I currently use a climbing tree stand (I either us the seat as a climbing aid or wrap my arms around the tree and bear hug it to climb up. Important note I never used climbing sticks before). In the past when I hunted in those types of situations, if felt kind of dangerous and I slid down the tree a little bit when climbing down. To me it would appear to be more dangerous using a tree saddle because you using ropes. I Do plan buying tree saddle in the near future so I am pro tree saddle. Please respond back to me thanks

In the past you have said that rope loses strength at knots, does the 7/64 amsteel lose strength each daisy loop? Im wondering if what the weight rating of 7/64 amsteel is after all them loops are put in.

My helium sticks came with those cam buckles, and they are definitely coming off. I am in the process of choosing a new method. Regular ropes are a no for the reason of unnecessary weight. But, a “rope mod” with Amsteel looks like a nice option. The versa strap seems like a better option in terms of a daisy chain. I like the adjustability of twisting the webbing if you fall between loops, I think if you twisted a daisy chain made out of Amsteel it would have less adjustment. Any insight on Amsteel whoopie slings to connect a stick to a tree?

I had tried something similar by trying an amsteel whoopie sling on a DIY saddle platform a while back. It was a little challenging to get perfectly tight. I found the amsteel "rope mod" to be the easiest to get really tight prior to putting weight on the stick.

Awesome. But as a professional arborist who climbs strictly SRT Amsteel is terrible for abrasion resistance, a jacketed accessory rope is far safer. Cheers dude 🤙🇨🇦

Hey Garrett, I'm planning on using the DRT method but want 2 modify from the Predator strap 2. I'm going 2 make a tool 2 splice with out of old aluminum arrows. Which side shaft would work best on Amsteel, I have alot of shaft diameters 2 choose from?

Hi. För that smaller amsteel daisy chain, If you make a whoopee sling loop in the first end of the rope you should be able to adjust it a little bit better don't you think?

You can use a whoopie sling. My experience with them (or UCRs for that matter) is that they end up taking longer to adjust than even the standard rope mod hitch and take two hands to adjust and then milk the cover back tight. And occasionally theyd slip a tiny bit before locking. So I like the daisy chain better personally for this application.

Went to Dutchware they have 3/16th and 5/16th amsteel. You stated you are using 1/4 in with a 3/8th versa button. Is it true 1/4th or are you using one of the other sizes? Thanks for your helpful videos.

Another great video. I’ve been looking to extend the length of my straps and this would be a great way to do it. With the Amstel, I was looking to use the 3/8. Do you feel that would be safe to replace the hang on straps on the stand as well?

It's strong enough. I haven't tried it myself. The only thing to make sure of first would be if the seat wants to pull away from the tree of theres too much okay in the setup.

I should have been more specific. What I meant about safe is whether the “cam lock” technique is strong/safe enough for a seat. I guess maybe adding a half hitch to lock it in would be sufficient.

I use a different stand and sticks but I use ROK straps. They keep everything tight.

What do you think the longevity of the built in shock cord will be on the versa straps?

They should last quite a while, but the good thing is, if it wears out or breaks you can tie a new piece in. It's pretty easy to buy shock cord by the foot.

I prefer multiple sticks to a single stick for ease of use in a wide variety of non-ideal climbing scenarios.

Since you've done in it in the past for LW sticks, what size diameter Amsteel rope works best for those versa buttons? Also instead of splicing can you just overhead knot it like you did with the 8mm rope?

I've never done it for Lone Wolf sticks but have heard 3/8" works well for those buttons. I also wouldn't recommend knotting the amsteel. It's much stronger and less bulky spliced, and very easy to splice with items you probably already have laying around your house.

Any idea what the dimension of the spacer should be for the 8mm accessory cord? I purchased three xop steel fast strap buttons and am wondering if I'm going to have to file down the spacer a bit for 8mm cord to work. (Dont know if the gap is exactly the same as the lone wolf button)

The gap on the lone wolf buttons is about 1/2" and also flared out slightly. I believe I've seen guys using the same accessory cord with XOP buttons but havent tried it personally.

For a hang-on stand I do yes. Those other methods do work, but it's more likely to have the top bracket pull away. With a saddle platform the non-stretch options like the amsteel daisy chain and tethrd versa strap work well. They are just a little more challenging to initially fit over the bottom and can slide a little further during the cam over if between loops.

Yes you can wrap it around under the button the first time. Then you also have less excess dangling.

When I've tried whoopie slings in the past they tended to be a little fiddly. UCRs were a bit easier than whoopies for me, though neither was as easy as the single rope looped around the button.

When I've tried whoopie slings, they've tended to require more time and fiddling than the standard cinch of the rope mod. Some guys have used ucr's too, which I think are easier to adjust for this application.

Mule tape is the ticket. 3/4" polyester mule tape has a 2500 pound breaking strength and is dirt cheap. The only draw back is that it's only available in white but the deer don't care.

Have you seen any comparisons of 1/4 Dyneema winch rope vs. 1/4 Amsteel for securing climbing sticks? You can't put a price on safety, but I like to save money where it's logical. Just curious. Thanks.

Amsteel from Samsom is 100% dyneema fiber. So the question is more or less whether you trust that whoever the other manufacturer is uses the material they say they do and uses good manufacting practices. But I haven't seen any side by side data.

I like being able to fully tighten down the strap horizontally around the tree before camming the platform down, but you wouldnt have quite that same ability with the daisy chain and would generally end up with more sag.

If you look up a locked brummel for amsteel, it's basically the same concept. It's just that instead of running the amsteel tag ends through little tiny holes, you're running the tag ends of the webbing through existing larger holes.

With the stock lone wolf buttons, 1/4" kind of works but is a little small. 3/8" would likely work better. The loop is created by a locked brummel. There are quite a few RU-vid tutorials on those.

If you don't land on a loop.....couldn't you twist the daisy chain, like you would a bow string, to shorten it, or take up the slack?

Theres a really big difference between 550 cord and amsteel in both strength and stretch. I dont think paracord would be a great option for this.

It's a small loop of tent guyline that I use to hang the sticks from my harness so I can get up the tree in one trip.

Knots don't hold as well in amsteel and the sharp bends reduce the strength.

If 1/8" amsteel is expensive and has a 2500lb tinsel strength why double it to make a daisy chain? Wouldn't you just be able to tie it around the button in the same fashion like normal rope? You would have more adjustment, not have to spend 45 mins to splice each one and spend half the money on material.

You would have to use a really short spacer for the versa button. Probably around 3/16 long. But it could work. I havent tried it. For a regular rope mod though the 1/4" works nice because it's easier to handle and toss around the tree, spreads the load across a little larger surface of the tree and stick, and gives the huge strength safety factor.

When you were tying the first not on stick why would you change the camera angle?? That make no sense. You changed the angle to the opposite side. Anyway ty for video.

I appreciate the innovation, but, I don't understand the need for it. I've used climber sticks for decades and have none of these problems. I assume you're using a lineman's harness or some saddle while you're putting them up. Simply use the rope or strap of your choice with a trucker's hitch. It cinches up perfectly without fumbling with loops, detaches easily and knots slip apart without effort.

I use truckers hitches pretty often with paracord on my trail cameras. They work great for that. Some of these types of improvements aren't needed to be effective, but they attempt to push continual improvement. Some guys like how quick and easy the daisy chain is. Others like the weight of a cam buckle for swinging around big trees. Others like you tight you can sinch an amsteel rope mod around a button, similar to truckers hitch in tension but without the extra loop to tie. It's all personal preference.

I'm used to a treestand but I'm 56 now and I hunt deep so I've got to get rid of some weight carrying the sticks I also like to hunt High I can shorten it up some I'm really more bowhunting now but I still like to go high when I do use my rifle how many sticks would you recommend to carry I would like to be 30 feet up would you go with a two-step stick and then use that portable heater or would you go with a three-step stick you can email me at deerslayer 72 F100 @gmail.
