Bab Lysaga is another deck where Liquimetal torque is beyond an auto include. Fill the deck with as many enchantment creatures as you can, tap liquimetal torque to add artifact and boom 3 permanents types by only saccing one
For Baba, I do that deck where all the creatures are two types. If it’s an artifact or enchantment creature, then you only need to sac 2 cards for the payoff!
I think Myrkul can make creature lands into mana enchantments who can turn back into creatures. That way, you can use them more aggressively in combat knowing that they’ll come back.
I really enjoy the background mechanic. They aren't super powerful but it gives a lot of customization options. I would have liked it better if they had expanded the partner pool but I understand that balancing new cards would have been much more difficult.
I played Minthara at the prerelease tonight. She was a blast and the experience counters added up quickly. She ran away with it. I will definitely make a full commander deck with her.
I'm currently building a commander deck around Sarevock, Deathbringer and Raised by Giants. The idea is to be the ultimate protector of the battlefield while put your opponents on a tight clock.
I almost think the background commanders are a “necessary evil” in a way. Them being better in the 99 than in the command zone is a breath of fresh air since every set seems to give us a large amount of new commander options that sometimes feels a little bit overwhelming. Being a draftable commander set, they needed to add a lot of commanders and a way to color fix, and with the background commanders, I think they were able to give us a lot of draftable commanders that don’t end up flooding the format as a whole. I hope this makes sense but basically I like that the background commanders do their job in draft, and in the format overall, they’re more of extra help in already established decks than they are a big, format warping boost to the overall pool of commanders themselves
I think we are comparing backgrounds to partner commanders too much. This isn’t a creature and a powerful enchantment. This is a commander and a minor buff for that commander with options for different colors.
I built Commander Liara at prerelease, and I very much enjoyed how she played. Especially with the new wave of myriad, it felt pretty good to play off of her impule draw and adventure spells, while swinging enough damage to keep pressure on opponents. I like it as a take on a boros commander
Faldorn would work well with Madness cards. When you cast a madness card, it goes into exile first instead of being discarded so it should still trigger her first ability.
One thing to remember with Alaundo is that anything that has 0 cmc will just stay exiled. It cares about the last counter leaving and with 0 you get 0 counters and therefore the last counter never leaves
for myrkul I suppose a devoted druid will get you infinite mana because is the same thing as the vehicle combo. it comes back as an encantment then you can tap and untap it anytime you want. one card infinite combo is not so cool but here we go. devoted druid just combo with a potato
Myrkul, Lord of Bones fills a very interesting slot in a deck I've had for decades, long before Commander was even a format. I know mass land destruction is frowned upon in this format, but nevertheless I have an interesting one I built long ago around Living Plane and Pestilence. Turn all lands into creatures, find a way to keep your own lands around, shut out all of your opponents by killing all land creatures, forever. The thing that's been missing has been...a commander. Is Myrkul the perfect commander for it? I think so, because now all land creatures come back as token enchantments, still with their mana abilities.
Throw in a Massacre Worm, Elesh Norn for more mass destruction. I particularly like your idea with Doomwake Giant, sac a creature land, get an enchantment, kill everyone else’s lands. I am very tempted to run this but I think my Myrkul immortality machine is already going to draw enough hate at my table lmao Regardless, thanks for the idea! You’re an absolute madman, and I mean that in the best way.
I currently have a Tymna/Kodama hatebears deck that I plan on retooling to try Myrkul as the commander, add a bit of an enchantments subtheme. As you mentioned with Elesh Norn, that’s a powerful effect that opponents are going to have a difficult time removing once it’s on an enchantment.
I like Baba Lysaga, combined with Delirium cards. So you can play permanents to be on the board and still get them in the graveyard to fullfill delirium...
Wheres my boy elminster ,....that deck is nuts and so fun to play....maybe im bias from my old spellfire days ...but im surprised you didnt include him on your list
Alaundo will actually immediately cast 1 CMC cards due to removing a time counter from them after exiling them with the counter. Any card he suspends will start out with its CMC-1 time counters due to this.
I have to disagree on Mazzy fixing aura's, as it limits what you can do on your turn. If you wanted to do something else, now you have to choose. Is keeping your Aura worthwhile? Will it screw up your plans later down the road? Will losing it screw it up your plans later, if you do what you originally wanted to do? It creates issues by forcing you to pay for the aura all over again. Instead of just giving it back to your hand or putting it on another creature. Sure its not forcing you to do anything, but that doesn't negate any of the prior mentioned.
Another thing to point out on Alaundo that you missed is that cards with suspend already in exile will have time counters removed with his ability. This can speed up some of those very expensive suspend card, also work great with things like aeon chronicler
I’ve always wanted to build a lich deck like that, although sadly I don’t think Myrkul is the one. I say this mostly if not entirely because he can attain immortality in a much more insidious way: Get out a sterling grove, fountain watch or hell an Avacyn if you have one. These are an important part of any unbalanced enchantment deck. From here there a number of cards with this effect (palisade giant, protector of the crown) but I recommend manifesting a weathered bodyguard for 3 mana early before you get Myrkul out (because any smart player is killing him the second he comes out). Kill the manifested bodyguard with a sac outlet or instant speed removal while Myrkul is out, it will flip as it hits grave, and bring it back as an enchantment with its ability. For your trouble? You just got an enchantment that will eat any damage you take from unblocked creatures, the fun catch being it can’t take damage so no damage is taken instead. With protector of the crown this becomes any and all damage you take instead. I’ve been messing around with Myrkul builds for a while, along with the other two gods in the Dead Three. Was very happy to see all the Myrkul love in the comments. Especially happy to see someone who wants to also go completely immortal in cmdr. So from one to another I hope this spices up your brew. If you end up throwing some lich shenanigans in, or even just build another lich deck, shoot a reply here. I’d love to see it!
If you're not exited about the backgrounds, I guess it's good they printed Archivist of Oghma and Deep Gnome Terramancer to get your blood pressure up 😂
Are you fond using a PW as your commander? I have noticed that you did not include any PW on your list or it is just that PW commanders in this set are not that good. Just curious.
For Aluando the seer. Using his ability just gives the text to the cards on how to remove time counters from them ,he himself doesn't remocd time counters. So if he is removed you should still be able to remove time counters right? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I thought all those myrriad or what its called sounded fun! I havnt seen that before in my group. Anyone who have some experience in that? I think you become a big target pretty quickly ?
I am not surprised Jon Irenicus isn't here. It's just another "bad gifts" commander, but this time there's goad too. In my opinion it's pretty dull and a linear buildaround/playstyle
tribal commanders i don't find too be particularly interesting, so i usually don't include them. they're very linear. jon irenicus is interesting but strikes me as the kind of commander people will hate to play against.
@@caden8592 I'd say the opponent being unable to sacrifice the gift in question makes it significantly more useful than most, if not all, the rest imo. Is there some commander that plays similarly that I'm unaware of? Beamtown will just be giving your opponent shitty ETBs while Zedru is both much more mana-expensive to use and usually has much higher potential upside for your opponent in my experience.
@@edhdeckbuilding oh if that’s the case then have fun. I’m just angry because I got a bunch of them and I absolutely hate it because the one time I tried to do a group hug thing my friends just killed me first
