"Monsters don't follow the rules of players" Is something I need to remember more.
@sageneodraconus
@sageneodraconus Год назад
I often make enemies follow build rules same as players to keep it remotely fair when I homebrew a villain or boss fight. However. I alsonhave jo problem making a Stat block for an enemy that has off the wall shit like "this character has 2 (or sometimes even 3) reactions per round, but only one per turn" or making up actions or bonus actions that can be done that fit a certain vibe I'm going for. I've made Stat blocks for like All Might or Endeavor from MHA and had to do a lot of homebrewy crap to make it work. Told some players to make some level 20s and had an arena match against it. Usually I make up hp totals to make boss fights (and regular fights too) last a certain amount of time. Hate it when a big important battle is done in like 2 or 3 rounds. That's like taking down a big ass video game boss in 18 seconds. Lol. So yeah. Homebrewy shit can solve a lot of problems for a DM but I usually still try to make actual main bad guys follow some semblance of normal build rules. Now I may have a level 14 fighting a bunch of level 7s or something but that level 14 is made by the same rules that they'd have to play by. So it's as fair as I can make it in my eyes. Lol

I love the Apex Action at the top of the round because it feels bad when you roll terrible initiative and the players hammer tons of damage before you even get a chance to react

I give most of my monsters spells that they can cast at will but I always flavour it as physical abilities like Breath Weapons. Wyverns and skunks have the Poison Spray cantrip, Yetis always start combat with Armor Of Agathys and elementals obviously have some elemental spells. I've even given a magical porcupine the Sword Burst cantrip, obviously flavoured as it shooting it's spines in all directions.

My big Monsters have to burn some of their hit points to activate a legendary resistance. They get to use them more often but it has an expense. 1st legendary resist costs 5% of max HP 2nd legendary resist costs 10% of max HP 3rd legendary resist costs 15% of max HP 4th legendary resist costs 20% of max HP Etc It means I have to weigh up the cost of using a legendary resist, PCs don’t feel like they’ve wasted a spell/ability when a legendary resist is used and towards the end of a fight it’s a bigger deal for the monster to use a legendary resist as the Big Bag will be low on HP. Of course my Monsters have about 20-30% extra HP to compensate for this feature.

Good stuff Coach! Ran a ship fight versus a Kraken the other day, Instead of running 1 powerful monster, I took different tentacles/head/it's lightning conductor as separate tokens on their own initiative like I was running multiple monsters. So the players were rewarded for wiping out different parts of the creature, if its head was damaged first the creature would be blinded and attack with disadvantage, when they took off the part that conducted lightning then the lightning attacks stopped hammering them etc. Definitely recommended for running colossal larger than life monsters, giving it that illusion of 1 big bad monster which we all want but not letting it get wrecked by the action economy.

I had an ooze that I upgraded by letting it engulf someone, who made a melee attack against it, as a reaction. When they found out The monk used their turn to disable the creature's reaction And the warlock used repelling blast to shove them out of the ooze And suddenly they had no problems defeating a creature as the warlock freed up the turn of the martial characters whenever they got engulfed.

Great advice DC. I've found that encounter and monster design are some of my favorite parts of DMing, so I'll be using some of these! I especially like the idea that you use different options for different monsters so things don't get stale. Like one monster gets an epic action, but a different one gets enhanced reactions.

I’ve been doing a thing similar to your Apex Actions in my games too. If you are familiar with Magic the gathering, they have a card type called sagas that represent an event in history. When I’m building my boss monsters I like to give them these actions that tell the story of the creature in a cinematic fashion. If the enemy is a sadistic spellcaster I’ll have them open with a curse on one of the players that becomes more debilitating over time. Or if the boss is a warlord type character they’ll open up with some action that bolsters their minions

Dude we think alike. This is almost exactly what I've concurrently developed! My system is exactly this! I also saw the content creators and videos you mentioned and took notes and applied to my games/learned from them! I have multiple d% lists of various things to template on including Auras, bonus actions, spell like abilities, and special powers. I call always active (or triggered by a particular occurrence but doesn't actually take a 'reaction')abilities "Static" abilities. I didn't have a term for my version of "Apex" actions but was also unhappy with his original term "Villain" actions because plenty of non 'villainous' stupid, neutral or monstrous/bestial threats would have things like these I feel. I'll start calling it "Apex Actions" because that's a great name! I also tend to have 4 sets of HP for my custom creature stats; Average, (dice), Max, minimum and Boss which will be implemented in the 5e compatible book I'm currently working on. I find I usually use Max or Boss HP. Boss is always significantly above the normal max HP and is better for powerful/large groups of PC's. There are lots of times when Average and Minimum Hp are also helpful and I still keep the dice because sometimes I enjoy the randomness of rolling! I also started working out these 4 HP for every stat block I use official or other third party content. Very fast to add monsters in with the correct level of HP to face the party! Keep up the great stuff!

I'm posting before getting into the video, but I had an idea for a creature that I plan to put into some of my games when any of my players decide to play an Elf. In Elven culture, there is a species of bird that is considered so sacred that having any possession that indicates that you may have hunted one of these birds before would give you an immediate death sentence. The bird is called the Kargrah Maw (car grandma but without the "nd" in grandma), it has blue and red feathers that almost look tie-dye. The reason this bird is so sacred to the Elves is because it is said to believe that the most powerful Elves who had the strongest ties with mother nature are reincarnated into these birds. What allows this bird to avoid natural predators is it's ability to ruffle its feathers and sing a warcry that hypnotizes would-be attackers and charms them. A creature charmed by this bird feels at one with nature, an extreme tranquility so powerful that instinctual emotions like fear and anger are completely subdued. You better hope you don't get charmed by this bird with a hungry bear around, you won't get the fear to run away or fight off the bear. Not looking at the ruffled feathers or not being able to hear the song provide advantage on the Wisdom Save, and not seeing and hearing the bird means you automatically pass the save. Other than the charming song and dance, the bird is pretty much just like a generic hawk or something, idk all of the bird stat blocks in 5e

I also love homebrewing monsters, but I think the hardest thing is determining whether their creation is balanced or not. I’d love to see you do a video on encounter balance from the perspective of how to tell if your homebrew creation is too strong or unfair for the players because it’s not like you can playtest them before unleashing them on your players. While your homebrew shouldn’t be limited by what players can do, I’m hesitant to deviate too much from how standard monsters work because I imagine players would be extremely frustrated by a monster that breaks too many rules. This is especially true against creative players who may have strategies that depend on certain mechanics working the way they expect. For example, players are fine with legendary resistances, but if you’re going to deviate from the standard 3, it should be communicated that the monster still has some left so that they don’t blow their highest level spell slot only to get countered by a 4th legendary resistance that they didn’t expect…
@XperimentorEES
@XperimentorEES Год назад
The initial counterpoint that crosses my mind is 'it keeps players from metagaming', which is mostly a problem in groups where everyone has or is DMing because everyone's studied a variety of statblocks and rulesets. But I find describing things differently than they appear tends to work the best without breaking much, using a giant's statistics for a fat troll or a cadaver collector's block for a cannibalistic warforged. But yeah I have the same problem of homebrew monsters being a coinflip lol.

So this is a big thing for me when I explained to people why I choose 3.5e and before as opposed to the newer editions of both D&D and Pathfinder. The monsters were dumbed down to bags of hitpoints and near cartoony watercolors in the books with little descriptions of what they were compared to the older Monster Manuals. The MM of older editions are also why I became so invested in D&D in the first place with the terrifying and mysterious drawings that depicted something of old stories. If someone is reading this that has not thumbed through older copies of the hardbacks or PDFs, do it.

For perspective: I’ve just started running my first 5e game. First in that I’ve never run or played 5e. I don’t own any of the 5e content. But I’ve been playing RPGs sense the early 90’s and running various game systems sense the mid 2000’s. In our session 0 I told my players that they can read all the monster stat blocks they want. Those are only one example of that monster type. My monsters don’t adhere to the rules or fit in a nice neat box. Later we discussed my 🎶”Run boy, run.” 🎶 mechanic. You know. For when they need to run from combat. I run a brutal world and mistake have consequences. I keep my notes behind a screen and roll my dice in a tray out front where everyone can see them if they want. I’ll be looking into this PDF you have. Sounds like it’s right up my alley. Grab your ketchup and crunch away my friends.

I had an enemy that took some inspiration from the game Undertale. And the end of each round there were a set number of blocks that swept through the battlefield, doing automatic damage. At the top of the round I would roll a d6 and depending on the result a specific pattern of these blocks would attack the party. I would indicate this by a runic pattern on the wall beginning to glow behind the bad guy. As rounds went on the party had to remember the pattern of these attacks and arrange themselves accordingly if they wanted to avoid taking damage. Everyone seemed to get a kick out of it once they caught on to the gimmick haha

im using some of the advice in this and the villain action video you made to create a monster for an upcoming session! (the session is in a couple weeks so all of this stuff might change, just thought id share a monster ive created using your advice!) its kinda like a grim reaper, who can raise the dead. but one of the problems is that everytime they kill one of the minions it heals the reaper slightly. and heres kinda how i treat my "apex actions" i treat is "start" "twist" and "finale" start and finale are easy to understand, the twist one is an action it would take if something grand happens like maybe a character dealing a massive blow making the monster angry, or a character going down empowring the monster to keep up the pace for my grim reaper its starting action is that it frightens the party for its middle action it revives nearly all the minions the party killed and its finale is its gonna explode lmao (like all the souls trapped inside finally get to be released.)

I give my players visual indications that Legendary Resistances are at play. Example: Acid Resistance would show the spell/attack having SOME effect, but it's clearly not 100%. Instead, the armor is bubbling/burning/frosted, etc. depending on the type of damage, and it gradually gets worse until all the uses are gone. That way they know that their actions are still making a difference, they just have to be more persistent, as opposed to it just being immune.

It’s basically more open ended and takes the system and “runs with it” by just having it be an ability that can happen at a round, a trigger, or whenever chosen Villain actions happen on rounds 1, 2, and 3 in that order in a pre-determined way. I have it be a bit more open ended and can even have them repeat the SAME action etc. Also this system helps you make it with tables etc instead of just a great idea and you have to figure it out from there

So…..I am sitting here thinking…….I cant remember the regular abilities of the monster(s) and you are suggesting MORE…..? More for me to remember(=forget😱)? Can you help this old player with remembering all the cool stuff, yours and regular? Take notes…..I read them and instantly forget🤯 Text in color? I get confused by all the colors! I would really like to be better at this!

I have a couple videos on how to run monsters faster, so definitely check those out! I would get a shorthand that you know yourself to be efficient at writing down what they do wrtiting it down MYSELF helps me remember too, using symbols like Bullet points for ATTACKS. Stars for passives and Squares for defensive things helps as well. I have also used beads behind the screen to remind myself about legendary actions etc :)

TLDR: DnD is about sharing fun adventures with friends, as for the rules and content: make it up

Honestly the book isn't bad for this honestly yes it's not a perfect system but it works. I've built over two hundred monsters for my campaigns I have wargaming and regular monsters the wargaming ones are my favorite but the regular ones are good too. I like to add the ability to force players prone with my physical creatures personally I'm not into magical creatures really they are pretty well built in the book. Add legendary actions to creatures you want to fight solo against your party it helps them feel like they where design for it. And even out action economy. No I've never sold my creations they where designed specifically for my party not general use they may not work for any other party or dm they or meant to produce a higher skill cap game and not beginner dm friendly and dms who could use them most likely build their own stuff lol.

Stopped watching when I realised this was just a 25 minute advert to buy his thing.

Never understood this, but I’d love to see your thoughts. I could remove the ad spot for the thing I created and it would be a 23ish minute video… but there is content there and tips and tricks etc. so Idk why it becomes bad when this is the same video I would have made with or without a resource

I have nothing against someone making a video to advertise their product, the issue I have is that the video is misleading. The video title and intro (you talk about how you codified a solution, because videos aren't adequate) both suggest that this is a video to support something that you're offering for free (as Dale and Matt offer their content for free, unless as with Mat it's explicitly clear it's a paid product like his Rulesets) And after 5 minutes of listening to you talk about how it's the best thing since sliced bread, I get suspicious, click the link and realise that you want me to buy something, but you just haven't said so. It'd not be misleading if you made it very clear in the first few seconds that you were trying to sell a product, and I wouldn't be annoyed with you and I probably would have continued to listen and make an informed decision about if I wanted to buy it. As it is, this is the first and last of your videos I want to watch.

Never before have a seen someone so desperately try to play Pathfinder 2nd edition in d&d 5e. If you have to remake the action economy entirely then just play a system with that type of action economy.

If I were to make videos on Pathfinder 2e… I’d be told to “go play dnd 5e” in those comments lol Just trying to give options to play in a way that feels good, and there’s issues with any system since we all have different preferences 💜

I find the idea of Matt Colville caring about anyone but himself laughable

If y'all want to add some cool mechanics to monsters instead of them being "a bag of hit points?" Check out @Runehammer "Drunkens and Dragons" has done more for me (save Matt Colville) to improve my game exponentially Various ways to make bosses and monster rooms have traps, extra attacks, etc. But also ways to use the environment. _These 4 different crystals spawn demons every d4 rounds until you destroy the "colored bit" on the boss...._ ... for example 😎
