Coriolis force (Coriolis effect) demonstration using a rotating parabolic dish. In addition to using a rotating camera (noninertial reference frame), we also show the motion of marble using a stationary camera (inertial reference frame). The experiment is performed in our undergraduate laboratory at the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at McGill University.

It will take some time for my brain to get this. The camera's frame/Scan rate is not a factor?
@DjordjeRomanic
@DjordjeRomanic 10 месяцев назад
The camera frame rate does not affect the outcome. What would affect the outcome is different rotational speed of the turntable. If the turntable was rotating faster, the deviation would be larger. If the table was rotating slower, the deviation would be smaller. Of course, no deviation if the table is not rotating.

So, which one are we actually seeing ? Is the marble actually making coriolis movements or straight ? I mean it can’t be both. - I take it the point is it depends on your frame of reference ? - Even though it ‘appears’ the marble is making parabolic movements it’s not really ? - If we were spinning at the same rate with the table, we would only see the Marne moving in a straight line back and forth yes ? - Luke others have suggested, what would an ink trail look like ? Parabolic from friction on the marble ? Why then are cyclones/hurricanes subject to Coriolis effect when the earth and atmosphere aren’t touching ? Is it because there’s still friction of the atmospheric air relative to the earth ?

Yes, it depends on the reference frame.

Uhmm, but the rotating disc in not rotating on it's center point. If I look at the edge of the disc, I see it moving from left to right compared to a still background pointof reference. I would think that also causes a distortion in how the balls move in either viewpoint?

What I don't understand is why it is called "force". I understand how it is caused, why we see this result in movement of the ball or fluids (as a matter made by particles, idealized as a ball ), but still I do no perceive that this is a force! Isn't it the inertia of the particle - the ball - that cause this effect?
@DjordjeRomanic
@DjordjeRomanic 9 месяцев назад
It's just a matter of labeling. If you are in a non-inertial reference frame, you will receive it just like any other force. But some people do call it the Coriolis effect. Another labeling reason for calling it force is associated with the 2nd Law of Newton. This term appears like any other force when the law is cast in a noninertial reference frame. You can check out my quantitative videos on that.

Drawing those lines is above my current editing knowledge (if done digitally). But anyway, it is very valuable if the viewer (or reader in the case of a book) does not have everything depicted but you have to visualize some processes on your own. That's how you get to the point of actually understanding the phenomenon.
