Great job Mark explaining the origins and various models of the Double Neck Guitar. You of course are correct these were mostly only used for live performances of Classic songs. Any of us that have played these know they are very uncomfortable to play for a long duration. especially while standing up as they weigh about 13 pounds.
Hey Al. Yeah, the first guy on the chat asked me if I was going to include live performances. I thought to myself, hmmm, I don't thikn any guitarist would go into the the studio with a double neck. Unless it was photo day. As always, I sincerely appreciate the support. Take care. Mark
Fun fact about Xanadu, the recording which appears on A Farewell to Kings was done in the first take! Very impressive, especially for an eleven minute track.
Hey Chozora. Rush fans are die hard. I was weaned on Rush. Recorded the album in Wales and had a blast. If I'm not mistaken, they ran through it once after they set up and then like you said, the first time the engineer hit record they nailed it. Such a great song. I could have gotten a better sound on the chunky part but I was pressed for time and I wanted to do everything as live as possible. I took Neil's death harder than anybody that I've never met. I made a video the day after and talked about what Rush has meant to me over the years. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comment. Take care and be well. Mark
As the story goes, when they reassembled at Rockfield in the summer of '78 to record Hemispheres they actually tried to do the same thing with "La Villa Strangiato". Geddy said that were trying to "write something beyond our capabilities" in order to stretch themselves musically. Challenge accepted!! LOL🤣 The version of LVS that made it to vinyl was not done in one take, although they really, really tried. I think I've read somewhere that ir was, at the time, the longest amout of studio time they spent on a single song. Most of that was trying to get it in one take. Interesing to note that I hae seen them play LVS live more than once.
We could easily go down the Rush rabbit hole. I remember meeting a guy in college who was a big Rush fan but the only albums he knew were Presto, Hold Your Fire, and Roll the Bones. Signals was the last Rush album I liked from beginning to end. They started losing me with Grace Under Pressure and I was done after Power Windows. I'll always think of Rush from Rush-Signals as the "real" Rush and the rest are just a collection of songs that I enjoyed well enough in concert but never got into. I could be missing out but I didn't even give it a chance after Hold Your Fire. Time Stands Still jumped the shark for me.
@@8MinuteAxe i think i saw them 13 times, maybe 14...from in 77 the farewell to kings tour, then at the end clockwork angels. the last may have been their best show ever.
Mahavishnu John McLaughlin was a devotee of the twin neck. I recall having a front row seat in the early 70's, mind blown with the band and sheer power of McLaughlins playing.
Hey Milo. I was originally going to do 10 songs and Birds of Fire was one of my picks. Certainly John, Rik Emmett, Slash, Pete Townshend, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford were just as important. Oh and Elvis of course. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comment. Take care. Mark
Good history lesson, did you do music history as well as theory when you went on you music course ? Good sounds too but man that looks like one heavy guitar to play standing up.👀
Mark, this sounds awesome. Amazing guitar and performance. I appreciate the history and key facts you provide, makes each instrument and associated songs even that much more memorable.
Hey Bob. I want to thank you again for always taking the time to support the channel. I hope you have an amazing weekend. Please take care and stay safe. Mark
This was in my recommended despite me not ever seeing you before. I expected this video would have like 750k views not 750! Great playing and I didn't know anything about the double neck besides it looks cool.😂 This video was entertaining and very informative, great video man!
Hey Craig. I really appreciate the kind words. There have been stretches (months) where I just grind and grind and not much happens but whenever think that 100k subs may just not be in the cards for me, I realize how grateful I am for my core audience. Forget the 25k subs, I have about 600 or so people that are so supportive and its amazing. If you play and you ever need tabs or help with anything just shoot me an email at markaranalli@gmail.com. everything on the channel is 100% free. I dont sell anything. Thanks for your time and support. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. Mark
What an Iconic Guitar "The Gibson @DS 1275 12/6 String Guitars! Great Story and History of Players, there were many more than you mentioned like "Eric Carmen and The Raspberries!"
Awesome video! Two of my favourite songs to play on 12-string are Xanada and Suite Mandam Blue. Also, Tomm Shaw's song for Styx, Crystal Ball is a fun one to play on 12-string. thanx!
Love the deep level of research that you make for these videos Mark. Brilliant and very informative/educational even for an old duffer like me! Great playing as usual. Well done sir!
Hey brother. I really appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed the history. I was surprised at how early and how many double neck guitars Gibson made. I'm rarely pleased with my performances but I have to say that I didn't cringe when I watched this one so they must have been ok. LOL. Take care and have a great weekend. Mark
Mark always whets the musical palette with these smorgasbord videos of great guitars--in this instance, the Gibson EDS-1275 double neck--and what they can do. A feast for the ears. 🎸
Rush is one of the under rated Canadian bands along with the tragically hip! In fact Neil Peart grew up in the same town I live in now. He went to the local high school here too. The song lakeside park is about a park that is 5 minutes away from my house and the light house and the pier are still there! Take care Barry from Canada
Hey Barry. I was weaned on Rush. I wasn't really into music until I was 10 or 11. My brother (who is 5 plus years older than me) started getting into Rush and they were my fav band until....A TRIBUTE TO NEIL PEART ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wfZF8Gex1SE.html. I tell the story here. Neil Peart's death was the most I've ever been emotionally impacted about somebody I never met. Thanks for supporting Barry. I really appreciate it. Mark
I don't think they're as under-rated as people profess them to be. I was immediately drawn to them in 1980, when my older brother came home with the new Permanent Waves album. I saw them live in '81 and 11 more times after that. People who know great music, know Rush. Most people who know rock, know who Neil Peart was. His drumming was superior - the best, but just as important, his lyrics were not typical rock fare and clearly show that he was a deep thinker. As for under-rated Canadian bands, I'd go with Moxy and Triumph.
Besides the great guitar playing and the awesome guitar, what's most astounding is that you got away with playing Hotel California without getting the video taken down by Henley's goons!
Very enjoyable and I totally agree with your list ! Zep's TSRTS is my favorite Zep song as well. I'd love to buy a 1275, but that voice in my head says "you're not worthy!!!", in its Garth persona.
Hey Adrian. Thanks for checking it out. I was going to do 10. I left Stairway, Magic Power, and Birds of Fire "on the cutting room floor" due to time. I've done Stairway so many times on the channel I figured it was time to give it a rest. I really appreciate your time and support. Have you checked out any of my COVERING THE CLASSICS videos? COVERING THE CLASSICS: SOLSBURY HILL: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QpEfqsb3jGQ.html. If you have time, time out came out pretty good. Enjoy your Sunday. Mark
Great video, Mark. I don't know which is more impressive: your talent level or your ability to come up with interesting subject matter. Well done. Thank you.
Hey brother. I actually did that video last week. No lie. My channel primarily focuses on the 12 string and Reverend sent me an Airwave 12 to try out. It is the first electric 12 that I've played with very little limitations. You can even bend on the darn thing. If you need tabs or help with anything just shoot me an email. Vangoa sent me a banjitar a couple of weeks ago so I did a cover of Old Man ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_ew-qgAIV1c.html. I'm working my way through the Sgt Pepper album too (LSD and A Day in the Life so far). Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate your time. Please take care and be well. Mark
Hey Jayson. I really appreciate you checking it out. The last couple of videos where I just plugged in and played were easier, more fun, and more people watched. Maybe I'm on to something. Enjoy your Sunday. Mark
It's a good list, all set in the same time period which was a good time for 12 strings. After this time period, 12 strings slowly dropped of the charts until they were brought back in the late 1980s and early 1990s by the Heavy Metal, Glame Band, Hair Bands, etc. Keeping the list to only the EDS-1275 leaves out one of the biggest 12 string double neck users, Richie Sambora. He used mostly Ovation double necks. Of the list, only 'Hotel California' charted. It went to number one. 'Wanted Dead or Alive' went to number seven.
Mike Rutherford of Genesis played a double neck with as 12 string electric guitar and a 6 string bass. His work on Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show, Suppers Ready are just a few of his tasteful contributions.
Hey James. I love Mike's playing. Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett also sported double-necks, especially live. Dusk, Return of the Giant Hogweed, The Musical Box also great examples. Peter Gabriel thought that the twin 12-string attack was their secret weapon. Little did he know that their secret weapon would join the band in 71 and by the end of the decade take it much further than they could have ever imagined. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate your time and comment. Have a great weekend and take care. Mark
Great retrospective! Would love to see a similar video featuring other types of double necks (i.e. Slash’s double neck acoustic/electric, Mike Rutherford’s guitar/bass, etc)
Hey Mark- excellent job, as always. You’re not only the greatest RU-vidr on 12 strings- you’re also the greatest one on 18! Thanks for including “Xanadu”. I personally think the 6 string guitar solo in that song is one of Lifeson’s most expressive, all that with a double neck guitar on his shoulders… The HB sounds great- I love my RB612BK.
Hey Jack. For sure. LED ZEPPELIN 12 STRING SONGS ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NphysLiaX44.html , THE RAIN SONG ON 12-STRING GUITAR ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BtCokAZPC0s.html, I've done a lot more but I don't want to jam you up. Earl's Court is one of my favorite concerts ever. Thanks for checking it out Jack. Have a great day and take care. Mark
Loved learning about the early double neck models. Recently saw a double neck with one six and one seven string at a local store but I cannot remember the brand
Great job! New to the channel, but I've really enjoyed the videos I've watched so far. One of my favorites with a double neck is "Lay It on the Line" by Triumph.
Hey again Eddie. When I was 12 years old, Lay it on the Line was my FAVORITE SONG. I still enjoy it and I still listen to Triumph a pretty good amount. For anybody growing up with guitar mags in the 80s, Rik was a legend! Mark
I'm glad I watched this now because I won't be surprised if The Eagles put down a copyright violation for this. They hate people listening to their music.
Yes it is clearly the coolest guitar in Rock,.. bar none! And yes,.. really think Jimmy Page made it iconic. So many good songs poured from that instrument I was unaware of until now. Listening to you play them really opened up my eyes. Already knew about Rush's Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee but Don Felder for Hotel California and Tommy Shaw for Sweet Madame Blue I had not noticed. Which is really strange since I can't think how they could sound any other way or be played any other way. Especially after this video and I grew up at those times in Rock! Took them for granted I guess. Yeah, eye opener! Thanks!
Tommy Shaw wasn't in Styx when they recorded Suite Madame Blue. That was John Curulewski. Also, Hotel California by the Eagles was recorded and released in 1976.
Page used it for 3 songs 1973 us tour song remains the same rain song and stairway to heaven. Guitar sounds magical but must be heavy Ouch did anyone use it more live ? Great information and history!!
You did leave off Floyd wish you were here but damn fine video. I was sad when it was over. I would like the table on your take on hotel. We share the chords but I would like to see your picking pattern.
Hey Richard. I've done Wish You Were Here in at least 10 videos and did an entire video on the intro solo so I thought I'd mix it up a little. I also have a little "feud" going to with Don Henley. Watch the first 2:30 of this for a few of my spoofs. DON HENLEY VS RICK BEATO: BLOCKERS AND THE FAIR USE BATTLE ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wqyHrEkk064.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. I've tabbed HC out a couple of different times. In May of 2020 I went through it using the Amazing Slow Downer and I think I nailed it pretty close. I followed that outline in the video but I was just freestylin' it. Shoot me an email and I'll send you the tab that I did. I'm sure it's similar to others. FYI, I don't sell anything and the only mailing list I have is letting friends know when I upload videos. Just in case you're worried about spam or a sales pitch. I have neither. :) Thanks for checking out the video. Mark
very informative video. I have the exact same Harley Benton, how do you keep yours from neck dives. My guitar keeps doing that and I constantly have to hold it up while I play.
Hey Tony. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There's not a whole lot you can do about the neck dive. I've only broken it out for one show (I only played two songs with it). One thing I do is to make sure that I tune it and get ready to play whatever it is while sitting down and I don't stand with it on the strap until it's time to perform. I'm sure you've done this but you can experiment with increasing the angle (but of course the more the angle the less the cool factor. lol). If it didn't weigh so much some kind of weighted strap would be cool but for that thing it's only adding insult to injury. Sorry I don't have a better solution. Thanks so much for your time and comment. I sincerely appreciate it. Please take care and be well. -Mark
Hey Cory. Great album and I Stay Away stands up with the best 12 string riffs of all time ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uJlA490hrCo.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. See what you think of this one. Thanks so much for your time and comment. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. Mark
Fun list. I would add "Go All the Way" by the Raspberries - which has a lot of back and forth between the 6 and 12. As for Rush underrated comment below... I would disagree. Alex, Neil and Geddy are each generally considered among the very most talented musicians on their respective instruments by other musicians.. me included.
Interestingly enough, Don Felder modified his EDS-1275 by replacing one of the control knobs with another output jack. This way, he figured, he could send one necks output to one amp and the other neck to another amp.
Hey Henry. So weird. I was literally just talking about Jimmy McCulluch 3 minutes ago in reference to the Wings Over the World Tour. I've done Band on the Run on the channel a few times. I need to make another one featuring Jin Mclaughlin, Rik Emmett, Steve Hacket, Mike Rutherford, and more Alex. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comment. I hope you have a great week. Mark
I have a Double Neck and what puzzles me is how on earth do you stop the Neck Dive? I've tried all sort of things but nothing seems to work. This is preventing me from using it for a set with my band!
Hey Rick. I've done Dead or Alive in at least 10 videos. I was trying to mix it up. But, great call.. I do a bunch of cool tunes in this one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uJlA490hrCo.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. I was never a big Bon Jovi fan (although we did do Livin on a Prayer in one of my very first bands) but I've seen the band Slippery When Wet far too many times. I dated a girl that was obsessed with them. I believe I held out until SWW gig number 4. LOL. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate it. Take care and be well. Mark
Hey Hector. I've gone very deep with the 12 string tunes on this channel but here's a song that's a true double neck classic. Good call. My ex wife is a big fan of CAC. Thanks for checking out the video. I appreciate your time. Mark
I just got my Harley 612 a few weeks ago. I think it is beautiful, but I totally admit that I didn't give much thought to how uncomfortable and back breaking it is. It's not even comfortable to play sitting down, as the area where it makes contact on your leg starts to hurt after a bit due to all the weight sitting on a 2inch strip of contact... Now she sits in her case and I regret the purchase, but it is what it is. I can see why most artists only used them for one song. Plus at 5'9 in height, it looks comically big on me. You need to be 6'+ to pull this off imo, lol.
Maybe the classic acoustic guitar position would help? It means the guitar will not sit on the right leg but between the Legs. Thats my favorite position while sitting
Hey Karlo. It's mostly for show. Jimmy Page managed to get the most out of it but you're absolutely right. I do appreciate you checking it out. I do mostly 12 string stuff. Here's a pretty cool cover FREE FALLIN TOM PETTY ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D1D_e74Gw_M.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. Mark
There's a Rik Emmett video that he explains the why pretty well. Intro beginning of "Lay It On The Line" live needed the brighter twangier acoustic sound of the 12 String , flip of a switch and step on a button heavier sound of the 6. He also covers brief history from acoustic to electric .
Hey Joseph. I recorded Magic Power and Birds of Fire but I cut it to five. Allied forces is one of my all time favorite albums. I'm not sure how old you are but Rik was the man back in the mid 80s when it came to the guitar mags. Getting my hands on an issue of Guitar Player was like gold back then and I had the Rik Emmett hot licks video too! I've done Magic Power and Fight the Good Fight in other videos. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate your time and comment. Take care. Mark
I think the death of John Lennon had the biggest impact on me and it's so sad we will never know what he would have come up with but I'm sure it would have been great! Btw is that me entered in the 12 string giveaway?I don't use social media so I can't do all the requirements! Take care Barry
Hey Declan. I was a senior in college when that came out. I'd like to say that my roommate was somewhat of an early adopter, he played the crap out of Nothing's Shocking before Ritual was released. It's funny, at the time of Matchbox 20, 3EB, BNL, et all, I thought we were heading towards a music nadir. Little did I know where we'd be today. August and Everything After is a true classic. The 90s were pretty good. :). Thanks for checking out the video and weighing in. I appreciate it. Speaking of the 90s...BEST OF 90s ROCK MINI CONCERT ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bT8jpzmeyrs.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. early video. some cringeworthy performances. :O Mark
Molly Hatchet - Fall of the Peacemakers - Duane Roland played a doubleneck live instead of the acoustic guitar used on the studio recording. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DrnurEYwpaQ.html
Ooh brother. I just did. Wow. Great musicians. I was in a guitar/drum duo back in the late 90s. We didn't loop though. I filled a lot of space and we harmonized on most of the songs but these guys are like a symphony. It's funny. One of my early intermediate students asked me about looping. I told him that when you're doing it solo and you're building tracks, you have to be dead on accurate with your timing or it all falls apart. Thanks for the recommendation Badrique. I really appreciate it. We "updated" a bunch of the old originals last year. We were very poppy. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3MvCk4NYg1A.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe
