I agree with you, Micah. Even the grinder eventually cuts through the lock, it would be after several discs, a lot of noise and the chance to get caught. In my opinion, the lock delivers on it’s promise.
@benbraceletspurple9108
@benbraceletspurple9108 Год назад
Remember you need to fill cuts. The first cut doesn't do much. So a total of 10 discs. A second lock would take even more discs due to fatigue of holding the grinder. And another battery.
@bluenose7984

Also you have to cut through both sides of the lock to get it off the bike, I've seen people take 5 blades to get through both sides with a mains operated grinder which a thief wont have on the side of the road. Awesome lock.

Excellent. I'm gonna get a couple of these D1000 locks for my eBikes. At their website they say this lock is around 4 lbs in weight, which is very good for the quality of security it is. Bottom line is it is very, very, very unlikely that a bike thief will have a half dozen high quality cutting discs and 3 or 4 spare fully charged batteries with him that he would need to cut this lock. So yeah, for all intents and purposes this lock is angle grinder proof.

I agree partially with a person who posted previous to me, there is no such thing on the market 'yet' as an angle grinder proof lock. But still it is very impressive, as I own a couple of e-bikes, one worth at least 6 grand (just in parts) I will definitely be looking into this lock! But I do suggest that anyone who values their e-bike also purchase and install a very loud vibration sensitive alarm, GPS tracking and e-bike insurance. The combination of a great lock (like this one appears to be), a loud alarm and locking it securely in a public area is most of the time effective at deterring thieves. Make sure any alarm you buy is vibration sensitive, placed in a spot that is hard to muffle (like under the seat facing up), and secured at a minimum with stainless or coated steel zip ties.

@@SellingNewYorkCiti Sure, I tested out several different ones from Amazon and the one I really like is a no name wireless vibration sensitive alarm, that lets you choose how sensitive to make it, link at the bottom. It appears there's an updated version to the one in the link, and the alarm is sold by several vendors on Amazon, you might want to check to see if there's a better price. Test it outside and/or with ear protection it's very loud, and can be overly sensitive on the highest setting. I clicked on your pic, nice videos. I would have never thought to use a hammer on a drill to get the hammer drill effect. And great narration, to many DIY videos are not narrated or not narrated with enough detail making them hard to follow. Keep making videos, especially construction / power tool videos there's not enough of those done by females. In my experience, I find the way women explain DIY / working with tools to be much easier to follow, with a much better breakdown of what they are doing and why. I work with power tools everyday and watch many RU-vid videos on it. I am your newest subscriber, I hope you will make many more videos. If there's anything else just let me know, I have built an ebike and 2 recumbent e-trikes, all high powered. Good advice. I caught a thief red handed trying to steal my Fiido M1 pro a few months ago. I had only left it for 20 minutes while I went to buy some food. He ran like a scared rat when he saw me. I never leave my bike unattended for more than 30 minutes in public. I have a tracker in it. A very jarring loud alarm. And two bolt cutter proof locks on it. Only someone with an angle grinder might have a chance. And as soon as these HIPLOK d1000s go mainstream. Im getting two of them. I work too hard for my money. To let any low life just take my stuff. To sell on for peanuts to feed their addictions.

I haven't had any HUGE issues with this lock yet! ru-vid.comUgkxfyHDlEqk6hqu9acdvK5NGzZsGKSokSbv It seems sturdy and like it will get the job done. I really like that it has a twisting lock feature to keep out dirt and debris. However, the mounting system is much too light for the lock, and continues to get loose/move around. It's mostly made of plastic parts, and I've had to tighten it a few times in the past week or so that I've had it. I'm worried that it's going to break off at some point while I'm riding. I'm considering just scrapping that part, but that would mean having to carry the heavy lock i my backpack and adding more weight. I wish I could have given this more stars, but without the mounting system, it's just another heavy lock that I have to cart around. UPDATE: Increased rating to 5 stars because the seller offered to provide a new lock and mounting system. Really appreciate the attention to customer service!!

People mentioning (here, elsewhere) that The Lockpicking Lawyer could likely pick this in minutes, keep in mind he is in the .1% of master lockpickers on the planet. Few, if any bike thieves, even in a city like NY, have his level of skills. Also know, if you see the Lockpicking Lawyer pick this in his home office, that's not the same as being on the street, under potential watchful eyes. Granted, a wizard lock picking bike thief could buy a couple of these legit, learn how to defeat them, then go on a binge picking them.

While I think you could eventually have made it through, using who knows how many blades, it would make a huge scene if you were trying to do this somewhere public. And e-bike thieves aren't looking to make a public scene, so unless your bike is stored somewhere out of sight and sound, I'd say they passed the test.

According to their kickstarter website, the lock is made out of a ceramic composite, which means that it may be vulnerable to a screw spreader attack, as the material is more brittle than metal. Still, in order to use a screw spreader, you have to be able to fit it between the bars of the lock, so if you lock your bike in such a way that there is no room for it, you are still good. Another possible attack would be a hydraulic cutter, which might shatter the material. The LPL has used one of these on steel locks, so maybe he would be able to try it on this one when you send it.
@duMaurier15
@duMaurier15 2 года назад
I think it is the same composite as the Challenger 2 tank.
@jacquesblaque7728
@jacquesblaque7728 2 года назад
How about "Jaws of Life" hydraulic kit? Rather than BFI (brute force & ignorance) mechanical approaches. Professional bike thieves could easily carry it in their van. And it's QUIET. OTOH, how 'bout we legally mandate VIN code on multiple locations on any valuable vehicle. If you can't fence it, why bother stealing it? Any lock would then be just an inconvenience factor and a "flag" that you're in the wrong line of work.
@BlPlN
@BlPlN Год назад
A hydraulic cutter or simply a hydraulic crimper with a custom die set would probably do it. Likewise, I wonder how it'd fare against a nut splitter if it's a brittle material.

I would have wanted to see what happens when you are through, if the lock is still rigid enough to be difficult to open up any gaps on it to be able to remove it from something it is attached to. Because it would be amazing if one would be required to cut two sides of it of, or bend on it even after cutting into one side.

@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 2 года назад
You will have to make two cuts to get it off, unless one very thick cut and managed to use a pry bar to bend (or crack) it further open. I would call that twice as good but not at all amazing, since if they can complete one cut, they can use same method for a 2nd cut, simply taking twice as long and that difference might be more than enough to make the thief move on, OR it might make them just start cutting the bike away from the lock instead of the lock away from the bike to at least get something for their efforts.

Yeagh, I'm wondering the same thing after watching the video, which is why I'm worried about spending more than 300.00 for an Ebike, since it seems any one with a little skill and the right tool, could by pass the super lock, by cutting into the fixed bike rack, or fence, but unless you have some other idea, I was wondering what about discouraging a thief by trying to use this super strong lock by locking up the front wheel or back wheel, requring a thief to know how to disassemble one of the wheels, than have to replace it, before tyring to sell it again at there local pawn shop, etc...
@victrolux
@victrolux 2 года назад
And from what I understand after you would theoretically cut through one side you actually have to do the same thing on the other side. Now I’ve also heard suggestions that the crossbar part or whatever that’s called might be more vulnerable by drilling into the key area. Either way I have one of these on order.

FYI: There's many different types of grinder blades and they're designed to tackle different grades of metal. They all look identical, but they will have wildly different performance depending on what they're cutting. It would defiantly be interesting to see how the grinder preforms with a blade matched to the material it's suppose to cut. Regardless, unless a thief knows what material the lock is made from, this is kind of a moot point.

The D1000 is the solution I've been waiting for. 35 years using the best locks on the market without suffering a theft. (Using the Altor SAF lock, reinforced NY Fagedaboutdits, Rock Locks, Cuffs, Bad Bones, the works.) Stay ahead of the dirtbags and you'll probably keep your bike! Top 3 stupid RU-vid bike theft comments: 1) LPL can pick it in 20 seconds! 2) They'll just cut the frame! 3) They'll just cut the rack! Or you can familiarize yourself with bike theft, talk to law enforcement and learn some things about the issue. Here's some useful advice from an experienced bike owner and thief thwarter. Not smug pot shots from the comments section! First, bike thieves don't pick locks. LPL is doing the world a huge disservice by giving the consumer bad information. Don't worry about lock picking.* Second, a bike thief CAN cut the frame, but they usually won't. It's the most valuable part of a bike and it defeats the purpose of stealing a bike: to sell quickly for drugs. Yes, there are exceptions, but they're rare. Thieves are lazy morons who will go for the easiest pickings. So chances are rare. But IF YOU ARE WORRIED, then lock your bike better! Don't just lazily lock through the top tube and walk away. Ideally, remove your front wheel and run your lock through the front whee, then the rear wheel between the stays and to the rack. This means a thief would have to cut through BOTH wheels to steal the frame. They won't waste their time. If you don't want to worry about your wheels and can't be bothered with that, then lock THROUGH YOUR HEAD TUBE! This contains the fork steerer tube and is MUCH harder to cut through. That plus the cables & stuff in the way, a thief will move on to easier targets. Third, racks can get cut, but again it's rare. Why go to the trouble when a thief wants a quick bike to steal and sell for $100? When your well-locked $2k bike is next to a poorly-locked $800 bike, the thief will take the easy bike to steal. Rules: Use a quality lock. Or two. Or two different styles. Be creative! Don't leave a bike locked up outside over night. Buy renter's insurance. Use GPS trackers. Record your serial number. Register your bike(s). There are always exceptions! *And yes, I'm very familiar with the BicPick method. I've worked on and re-keyed 7-pin cylinder locks in the past. (Fun with the Dremel and altering the pin lengths!) This was the exception and Kryptonite backed up and replaced their defective product. The older Kryptonites with Ace-II cylinder locks are BicPick proof, BTW. Don't throw them away!

And you can be on top of a bike thief( No Diddy😏)before he can get done doing all that sawing. Plus the sound of an angle grinder going for that long is going to draw somebody's attention. Either way I would still buy one.😂

Well done. Good lock and great to see how well it stands up to grinders. If a diamond cutting stone was quicker (as some comments have mentioned) I presume it would take too long to make it worthwhile for a thief. Good review.

The lock maybe disc cutter proof it’s going to be the object the lock is secured to that the bike thieves will target I suspect.

In a suburb, we don't see too many guys brave enough to grind on locks in daylight, so any high quality lock -or two - will work well. Indeed, in the southern states, grinding on a lock attracts a couple of concealed carry guys. But yes, the key mechanism is different, as picking at a lock looks more like an owner just having temporary trouble.

I saw another uTube vid (I can’t remember the link) where they eventually cut the lock using 7 blades and the grinder was mains powered. They also tested the lock and it was break proof. But they didn’t pick it.

I wonder what happens when you try different discs than metal disc? Like stone one? Or maybe just hit it with hammer really hard once and then use grinder?
@DerOlax

Diamond disc would get through that ok. They don't lose much diameter as you use them either so you wouldn't be hampered by the wheels reducing in size.

was this really a test of the angle grinder blades?
@saifcathum3423

Carbide tipped reciprocating metal saw blade. Something like a Diablo Steel Demon 9 inch blade from Home Depot for less than $20. Carbide tooling can cut just about anything including hardened steel.
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 2 года назад
It's a ferro-ceramic composite something, so while I agree that a carbide blade might make more progress, it would tend to also chip teeth off and be more expensive to wear through blades. IMO a larger diameter, thicker ceramic cutoff wheel makes the most sense. And a better grinder than Ryobi's. Theirs cuts out power if you (more easily) bog it down so the cutting time is greatly increased compared to some more formidable contractor grade grinders.

Ok this is a strong lock, but it seems too small to fit around the bike and what you're securing it to. Needs to be bigger?
@Stryford1
@Stryford1 2 года назад
That's quite impressive! I hope the lock is just as impressive at being pick-proof. Micah, send that ruined bike lock over to another RU-vidr, LockPickingLawyer, to see how hard it is to pick the lock. If it takes a longer-than-usual time to pick it then I just might buy one! Also, how heavy is that bike lock?
@rayglasscock9667
@rayglasscock9667 2 года назад
You should have had the lock loosely secure not held tight that would have made it even more difficult to cut with it being able to move it would have kept jamming trapping!? I’m impressed See if you can do another test with it fix too a old bike I think you’re going to be more impressed

Since it’s hollow, they should put some kind of thick liquid dye. It’ll shoot some type of dye on them.
