Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

An instant classic, Outstanding performance from Ncuti, Millie, and the brilliant supporting cast. Classic Moffat using a simple concept or idea and absolutely writing his socks off around said concept. Brilliant, meaty, and tasteful dialogue. I’m embarrassed to confess that i thought that after The Giggle, Ncuti definitely certified himself as A Doctor, but this week for me he cemented himself as THE Doctor

The confusion comes because each episode is in a separate multiverse. That is why you see the same person, in each episode... But acting is different... Only Ruby is the same , in all multiverse... The doctor is traveling Ruby's timeline/multiverse.... Trying to understand her... Ref doctor said " oh this is your first time in space".. There is no linear time line to the series.... It will all be realigned in the final two episodes.

This episode was perfect. Ncuti and Millie were just amazing their dynamic of being mates, their chemistry really drove that story, amazing performances. Not an ounce of wastage. Central hook was used to perfection.
@kbg12ila
@kbg12ila 2 месяца назад
That hook was not used to perfection at all. There was like one moment it was used well which was when the doctor had to calculate the weight of the thing... Other than that it was kinda meh... They didn't take full advantage of the premise. He didn't have to do anything that clever to solve everything and didn't even have to order and command the others to do stuff like he would. He just asked the AI guy to go in and then suddenly everything got fixed.
@RaymondWilliams-uu1ns
@RaymondWilliams-uu1ns 2 месяца назад
They were the weakest part of the production. The two soldiers at the beginning were the better actors. Millie is a one note companion. I can now see why they got rid of her. Ncuti plays it far too emotional. That doesn’t work when trying to keep calm but he can emote and stay still. Then there is common sense. Surely, once the Algorithm works out the Doctor exploding will destroy half the planet, including the Computerised ambulances then it would not let him die. No? The sugary ending was out of place. Tennant was shaken up after Midnight. Ncuti is all smiles as if nothing had happened. It never rings true. Is this reality? I think we might find that the Dr and Ruby have been in a virtual reality by the end of the season.

@kbg12ila it was a classic doctor who ending. Doctor who commonly ends with the power of love or similar concepts saving the day like in "night terrors" or "closing time" both great stories where the doctor was powerless to save the day but a dad's love saved them. If you want completely logical endings watch something like star trek, doctor who has always been more emotionally powerful with how things get resolved.

I loved every single second of this episode, only Moffat could make an episode where The Doctor doesn't move an inch a masterpiece 👏🏼 RTD was good when the show was initially rebooted and gave us some brilliant moments in his initial run but I truly believe Moffatt is the GOAT Doctor Who writer, he gave us River Song, The Weeping Angels, the incredible Silence story arc, the church of the papal mainframe soldiers (which reappeared in this episode), The Clara Oswald story arc and so much more... I will always consider his run as the greatest era of DW ever... No disrespect to RTD but what the show really needs is the return of Moffatt to bring back the magic and wonder he injected into it every season

Loved this one, I'm glad to see 15 and Ruby in a more serious stressful situation doesn't compromise their friendship. This is probably one of the better Susan Twist cameos, she's still not really adding anything to the stories but the character she's playing doesn't take away from the plot. My favourite moment is when the Doctor, despite the danger to his own life asks Ruby to prioritise checking if the other person was ok, it's not only a endearing character choice but in doing so Ruby finding his remains ends up being the key to saving his own life at multiple points.

Excellent and super quick thoughts! - always a useful watch on your channel, Tharies. There are themes in this episode that are familiar to Who followers. Chief among them is the realisation that the war is senseless and can be resolved easily - if only those involved could step out of the conflict for a moment to see the whole picture. We saw a similar logic applied when 10 cut through the momentum of killing in The Doctor’s Daughter. In the Day of the Doctor, one plot thread found resolution when memories were wiped in the Black Archive, and war averted through rational thinking - and again in The Zygon Inversion. Yes The Doctor has form in effectively steering combatants away from war, usually by exposing how nuts the rationalle is for fighting in the first place. Its an important trope in the show, and one that needs doing.

I was literally hanging on every single word from Ncuti. It felt so raw and so real, definitely one of the most emotionally intense and compelling performances from a Doctor that we've ever had on the show. He was an absolute powerhouse in this episode, and this is what I'll site as 15's "moment". Moffat's single-minded vision for this episode is so well realized. Its full of pointed and economic dialogue, and the whole episode is absolutely lazer focused. I don't think Moffat has had this focused and committed of a script since blink. Overall, this is genuinely one of the strongest Doctor Who episodes I have seen in many years. Last time we had an episode this good was probably world enough and time tbh. I really loved it!

Honestly I think the best eps come from RTD being the showrunner and Moffat being the writer. (Moffat's era had several flaws with for one, it's portrayal of women and the fact the Doctor was just "too important", meanwhile I don't like RTD's tendency for deus ex machina) I feel like they balance out each others flaws perfectly. (edit: Talking about deus ex machina this episode did kinda have one, the ending could've been better. But nothing's perfect and it was still a great episode.)

I LOVED this episode. This is PROPER WHO!!! I liked Space Babies and Devil's Chord fine, they're really good SJA style episodes, but this was perfect! I don't know about Varada being in it. My first thought was this being a Karen Gillan situation, where they liked the actor so much they asked her to be a new companion in the next series. I think if the ending worked better for me, felt less convenient, I’d have loved it. As it stands, it feels like a bit of wasted potential. It’s very tense in the first half, masterfully so, but in the end it goes Deus ex Machina (almost literally) in a way I had to go “Eh, I guess,” to tolerate. I can’t think of a better solution off the dome, but I would’ve preferred the Doctor intentionally solving it rather than it being fixed by luck/chance with an AI facsimile acting like a virus. It works thematically, but it doesn’t work narratively for me. I also expected the finale scene after the climax to do something, say something, hit me in a way it just didn’t. The AI replica waving felt hollow. I felt like the episode kinda petered out. I honestly think keeping it simpler’d’ve helped.

"Closing time" and "night terrors" ended the same with the doctor being saved by a fathers love. If you're not looking specifically at dad's this has happened numerous times in other episodes where love saves the day its a huge part of doctor who. Shows like star trek are more logic based but doctor who has always been more about the emotion.
@UltimateKyuubiFox
@UltimateKyuubiFox 2 месяца назад
@@SnowLily06 It just felt too convenient for me for how well-paced and grounded the story'd been. Usually there's a bit of explanation in Moffat scripts to make those moments work, but for this episode, I think another solution would've been better. It's just such a tense, human situation, stepping on a landmine, that I think seeing the Doctor figure something out by himself, with Ruby's help, would've been great. Just that scene of her handing him the urn, imagine that kind of intensity, that connection, expanded on for the climax. I also guess that because of how AI has progressed, what used to work for me doesn't anymore. I know what AI actually is and a facsimile of a person is not gonna be anything other than what a system can spit out. If it had captured all his memories, then sure. But barely any? Man, it didn't hit.

Excellent review and great insight Tharries! I agree with everything you said, and really enjoyed BOOM. I am very intrigued by the mentions of the Doctor being a father in both this and the previous story. If this is intentionally drip feeding us the idea over the course of this series then potentially it could be linked to the Ruby's mother mystery. What if Ruby is a relative of the Doctor? BOOM has that part where the question who is Ruby Sunday's 'next of kin?' - and we cut to the Doctor - Who IS her next of kin! Well maybe... If Susan (the Doctor's granddaughter) has also been mentioned it could be her daughter. Or it could be Jenny's daughter (from The Doctor's Daughter). It would be a great feel good story to reveal that the Doctor finds out he isn't alone and has his great-granddaughter by his side, and that they've been looking out for each other for a good while. This episode was brilliant, just absolutely superb, "What will survive of us, is love." is such a beautiful quote (from a really amazing poem by Phillip Larkin, trust only Moffat to reference something like that for Doctor Who lol) but it also encaptulates perfectly what happened to Splice's dad, he may be gone, but within the AI left over is the part of him that loves his daughter, the same love that helped save the day, also that whole last scene itself with Ruby and The Doctor is just brilliant, if death is what defines you, then make the most of life. (again something that can be applied to The Doctor, especially this incarnation) Also massive props to a Murray Gold masterclass in this episode, I'll be honest I hadn't really felt like he'd been at his best since his return, but the score for this episode is gorgeous especially that last track. The disjoint between the discussion of 6 months in that episode and the reaction to being on another world does support the fact the Devils Chord has been broadcast out of sequence.

The time skips are intentional: this episode happens in October (5th or 25th). Devils chord takes place in "June or July" and Space Babies is Christmas Eve. Previously the date has never been mentioned or has set up as the day of airing/ finale date. So 3 episodes in 10 months with no travel / very little in between. That is a plot point waiting to be noticed.

I've not long watched this episode with my kids and they were transfixed. My 8 year old is often easily distracted during any TV, even Who, but she did not move a muscle. My 12 year old is an even bigger Whovian and she enjoyed it hugely. I am loving having RTD in charge, but even more now Steven Moffat is writing some single episodes. When he was in charge it felt like a great time, but sometimes there might be the feeling of the slightest bit of filler. With one off episodes it feels like there's all thriller and absolutely no filler. The pacing was spot on and the details were phenomenal. The message about business making profit from death was put over in a way which was very much appreciated by me and which I hope will help to shape the minds of thousands of young people. This episode should hopefully win awards. For writer, director and performers alike. I've not yet heard more than a second of Tharries video, or any other reviews, I wanted my views to be recorded before I was influenced by anyone else's opinions. I shall catch up with this video later today and hopefully I am in agreement with many of you. I actually had tears, of joy, running down my cheeks towards the end. No Doctor Who has done that to me since Steven Moffat was last in charge of the show. For that to happen, I can only award a score of 10/10.

I don't like the fact that Ruby got healed up by the end. Not because I hate her, but because it feels like a cope out that a fatal injury like that just ends with Ruby getting up and walking off. I feel like they should've shown her visiblely being harmed by the injury until the end credits start, or the next episode, inorder to emphasize the dangers of time traveling.

I liked the previous episode and this one, the only one that was kinda bad was the baby one. I also noticed that the thing the doctor threw on the ground in this episode looked like a Dalek gun arm thing. I also think that Ruby Sunday might be Hecuba her daughter. Sunday somewhat is very old according to that ambulance machine and the snow stopped which looked like time was freezing. Hecuba who the sister of the toymaker who patiently waits has time like powers.

No, it was a Dud! Too much emotion followed by a sugary ending. Ncuti is all smiles. “ On to the next adventure Ruby” . No trauma . At least Tennant was shaken up at the end of Midnight. The little girl never grieves the death of her father. The female soldier gets over the death of her suppose love interest with ease. There was never any tension. And the Dr blowing up half the planet was another example that he’s no longer a mortal but some Marvel Superhero. Why wasn’t Ruby killed? Why did it snow? Is this reality ? No doubt, Ruby isn’t going to be a mere mortal either. So both have alien superpowers. Great. Dull as Hell.The Telegraph review described it as a dud. I saw why.
@SnowLily06
@SnowLily06 2 месяца назад
If you've seen episodes like "closing time" and "night terrors" then the day being saved by a fathers love shouldn't be a shock to you. There are numerous accounts of the doctor going through something traumatic and leaving unphased. The doctor has always been a complicated space time event and that has come into play multiple times like in "silence in the library" or "flesh and stone" its not a new marvel superpower. Soldiers are specifically trained to not let the deaths of their friends and comrades get in the way of their mission especially religious soldiers who believe their love went to a better place, she was probably sad about it later but there were more important things going on at the time. As for why Ruby wasn't killed that might come up later or it might just be that the ambulance could save her as it is very advanced technology but it's definitely not unbelievable.

That's how it's always been. Tragity happens the doctor smiles and moves on. How he feels inside is different. And the locals are super religious. It's gonna hit that girl soon enough that dad is really gone. For now she believes in a heaven were mum and dad are reunited. They all see people die all the time there. They realise their trauma and break down later

@@SnowLily06 What’s believable ? That it snows when Ruby gets emotional or hurt? Yes, it’s fantasy but it’s still unbelievable to me. She obviously not a mere mortal. No ordinary companion. An absolutely brilliant episode! The only very slight criticism I have, is that I was really looking forward to seeing Ruby have more agency and get some character moments beyond her being a walking mystery.. I wanted to see her take charge, have ideas of her own etc. But instead, besides the couple of moments she had in the first few minutes (insisting on handing the Doctor the "urn" like you've said, and then going to shoot the gun to draw the ambulance away), she mostly just does what the Doctor tells her, before getting shot and being taken out of the later half of the story. I guess maybe it's partially on me for expecting differently, it's just that so far I feel like we hadn't really gotten much from her in terms of a unique personality, and since the premise of the episode was that the Doctor couldn't move, I was expecting Ruby to be the main star of it, and have to make more tough decisions on her own which I would have loved to see. I also think that her moment of near-dying was only impactful due to the Doctor's reaction, not because I care about her as deeply as I did some past companions at similar points in their respective run, and that's kind of a shame. Yeah, I liked the snow and "next of kin" thing, but, it felt like just another mystery-box moment instead of an actual character beat, which I think shouldn't be the case when the companion is literally dying. Good news is, as far as I can tell next episode seems to be an actual Doctor-light episode and apparently one of RTD's finest, so, I'm really hoping Ruby will finally get some unique and interesting character traits/moments which will make me more attached for when she's next put in danger lol :) All that being said, I did enjoy all the moments we did get with the Doctor, seeing him be so close to helpless, having to ask for help and unable to run, knowing that he's putting everyone at risk but seeing no way out for most of the episode, was seriously fantastic, and as you've said, very emotional. And you're right, the dialog was great and Ncuti was incredible. The tension overall was amazing, I literally found myself holding my breath or actually gasping a couple of times, and near tears at a couple of points. And seeing Varada so early was a lovely surprise as well! I'm so curious about how they're going to explain away her return now lol.. But we have a while yet until we get there and find out.

Basically my only negative thought of the episode is that the kid should've realised their dad was dead, but even then we dont know how they were raised and they had clearly never seen one of those "urn's" or one of the holograms so its possible they were a sheltered religious child who was dragged to a battlefield and genuinely wouldn't understand that he died. Overall an amazing episode Moffat truly is the king of doctor who writing

He sing 'The Skye Boat Song' to soothe himself, rather than casually dropping in that he's afraid because of 17Hz, or some other factor. Nice performances from everyone... Very nicely done, reminiscent of so many others. We have elements of 'Black Mirror - Be Right Back' in the AI memory of the recently bereaved, not being a complete version of them. The whole scenario reminded me of 'ST:TNG - The Arsenal of Freedom', where the war is a product demonstration, and ended with a 'We'll Buy it.'. It showed the Doctor's instincts in running towards the screams of someone dying. On the negative side, the landmine wasn't logical, if it's alert to biology it clearly knows it has a living subject standing on it. Simultaneously, if it's also on a timer to explode, why wait? Simple answer, it has to for there to be a show. The subvertion of fearing ambulances was magnficent. The musings on death, faith, proof and existence are beautifully balanced. As the audience we care for a character that's only just been introduced this episode. That is something that's felt lacking in the Chris Chibnall run, with the Fam referring vaguely to any of her companions. We get to see the inhumanity of Mundy Flynn, shooting the Doctor just to have her dead friend returned, in her pain. The later realisation that if that happens, she switches to self-sacrifice. Her loss, when you hear his voice change while deactivating the Ambulance, and the reveal that he's been killed by the self-defence systems of the Ambulances. Personally, I hadn't caught the six-month time gap. I can forgive it, if we'd stayed confined to Earth, and Earth's past. It could still be her first alien planet. Again, we have the glitch on 'Next of Kin', that suggests a deeper mystery to Ruby's existence, and a fine resolution with a tinge of loss and pain. An admission that hope and faith can mislead, and be used to excuse lazy thinking, while simultaneously provide solace. Splinter's Dad is simply dead, NOT gone. The poignant ending when Splinter shows she understands that her Dad is dead, she's no longer clinging to false hope, reminded me of Ricky Gervais' character in after life. One scene where he met a child patient in a palliative care asks if he'll keep coming. He assures her he will, until she's better. She then offers the bleak reality of, 'Or until I go to Heaven.' She asks if he believes in Heaven. The died-in-the-wool Atheist kindly lies and says he does. Admitting nobody knows what happens when we die, life is to be cherished, we must cherish it, as we don't get to relive it. The tones of 'Dark Water' and 'Death in Heaven' resurface with a chill. The desperate and futile hope when the Doctor tells Splinter and Mundy to run... Even though his death will shatter half the planet. They huddle together promising never to abandon one another... much like 'Toy Story 3', in the incinerator. Yeah, yeah, a well done episode.

In addition to the Doctor's line to Ruby about seeing an alien sky for the 1st time, does that mean Ruby and the Doctor didn't land on the refugee planet in Space Babies? one of my only problems with this episode was the kid felt at many points like they new the dad was dead but just was happily looking at pictures from the hologram and talking to it like she must know hes dead and is referring to the hologram as though its him so it kind of confused me. and as someone who lost my dad at a young age i feel she should have been clearly sad or devastated at some point in the episode (i know she goes a bit crazy when she's trying to get to the hologram but that isn't what i mean)

*Ruby is transfixed by this planet's skyview of moon's, sun's, bands, and nebula.* And, some people think that after 6 months of travel with The Doctor, she would NOT have been fixated on the sky. And this didn't make sense to them. Really, you're saying that with ALL of the wonders of the Universe that traveling with The Doctor could show you, (and the Companions are supposed to represent US the viewer) you'll be nonplussed by this kind of unique skyview after only 6 months. That seems pretty sad to me. And, just makes no sense to me. I think I'd still be in AWE of what The Doctor could show me after a decade... And even longer! At least that's what I'd like to believe is out there.

I agree with your point, that something stunning, new and beautiful never loses its impact - we humans still are struck by a sunset or a panoramic landscape despite having seen them many times before. Isn't the issue not that she's in awe but that the Doctor comments that its the first time she's been on an alien planet? Supposedly they've been travelling for at least 6 months but she only just went to a new planet now? Plausible I suppose but I think that's what isn't making sense for some people, the timing.

That was very good indeed - a welcome return to the classic big threat focused down to one tight event. A little heavy handed at points - I thought the framing of the final speech as if fourth walled was a bit unnecessary. Definitely a welcome relief after luck eating time travelling goblins, a baby snot monster and death by cartoon cabaret. Interesting how many of the best revival era stories are by Moffat under Davies. Interesting also how much Moffatry returns but so artfully transformed it doesn't feel regurgitated. Organised religion militarised for corporate ends, rationalism vs faith resolving into secular apolitical faith. Some Americans are going to have problems with this one... Thoughts and prayers... PS Oh kid, kid, kid, you've never heard of the Skye Boat Song? Your generation really is dislocated from so much wonderful tradition, isn't it?
