I installed an Airalo eSim a few days before I went to Japan. When I arrived and got off the plane I checked things out and it worked! I installed an Airalo eSim on my wife's phone for the Philippines and it too works well!
@@ToddCotton-n4z If it's Airalo, and specifically for Japan, you can purchase in advance and install it. It should not activate until it connects to a Japanese provider when you arrive in Japan.
I’m going to Japan in a few days. Which service did you use for your phone? And did you get data only or were you able to talk and text as well? (and if so, how?)
@@rsvpevents6780 I’m in Tokyo now actually. We used Ubigi and it’s been great. Easy to setup before you leave and it was working as soon as you landed. It’s data only though. Apparently getting a voice number is tricky here so we just used WhatsApp. Another thing to look into is getting a Suica card on your phone. That also saved us a ton of time and it’s very easy to use for JR and subways etc. Lots of convenience stores also accept it as payment. Lastly, if you are traveling with big suitcases, you can have them shipped to your hotel (and back to the airport). We used a service called Yamato Transport (black cat). Hav3 a great trip.
We used Airalo for data only in our 10 day trip to Japan last month. We were very pleased with the simplicity of eSIM and the coverage, though our travel was limited to the major metro areas (Tokyo, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, Kyoto). We found that the 2 week plan was perfect. They must have a grace period, since we got an email 2 weeks after coming home telling us that we had 3 more days to top off our plan. Thanks for the videos!
@@Najerafamilyadventure HI, assuming that your iPhone is eSIM compatible you can watch this video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q6tPx8fluR0.html Let us know if you have further questions. but best to start your own thread as it's easy to miss your question otherwise.
You really should do this as a permanent job.!Your videos are really non repetitive,no nonsense, get to the point, and always informative.!🎉🎉🎉Thank you!!!!
Just an FYI for anyone with a newly purchased eSIM only, US based phone. If you’re on ATT and on an installment plan, you can’t use an eSIM outside the US unless you pay it off before your trip. Then they would unlock it. Not sure about other carriers like Tmo or Verizon, but I assume it would be the same.
Thank you so much for the updated content about Japan! It’s been 7 years since i’ve been to Japan and instead of using the pocket wifi, I’m now thinking of using the eSim card.. great info!and thanks for sharing the affiliated links 😉! thank you! 👍🏻
fantastic video!!! seriously, you answered every single question i had about esims. my biggest questions were how do i activate it outside of japan if it needs a certain cell signal to work and would it interfere with my cell signal at home. huge thank you for making this video and making is really clear to understand how it all works. :D
I will travel to Japan for my first time this month, on my own! This video and the video about the apps to download are very helpful. I feel more confident now. Thank you! 🌞
Hi, I personally have not tried Holafly in Japan. However, I've heard mixed reviews. The main reason why I don't recommend Holafly is they are known to hit the FUP - fair usage policy, which means your internet speed will be reduced a lot. Also, they do not support tethering, meaning you cannot share your internet connection. The services mentioned in the video all work well in Japan. right now, Japan Wireless is our favorite. It just works well.
Thank you for this great video! Very informative and helpful. I am going to use one of the affiliate links, when I’ll figure out witch plans suit the best for me. I am going to travel for just 14 days, but the 30-day plan with Ubigi seems pretty nice, with 3 GB for 8€. One question: in case you consume all the 3 GB, would you still have the chance to navigate at a low-speed connection?
Hi, while I cannot find the documentation on Ubigi, pretty much every eSIM that I have tried does allow continued usage with slow data. However, in my experience it is usually painfully slow. However, you can top up, if you need. Also, 3GB might not be enough for 14 days unless very minimal use.
In your previous video your top recommendation was Japan wireless. This still seems like a good option with many plans and coverage. We are going to Japan for 14 days and looking to use esims for the first time. Would you still highly recommend Japan wireless?
@KenshoQuest Thank you for your contribution. I am currently researching very intensively what is the best eSIM for me in September with 5G service and Ubigi is in my top 5 list. What is not entirely clear to me, however, is whether it is a real Japanese eSIM or, like with Airalo, a roaming eSIM. Did you have to set roaming to ON with the Ubigi eSIM?
Hi, I do not currently have it installed on my phone right now as I am testing different eSIMs But I do not believe you need to set roaming ON. I also checked on their website and this install video doesn't show having to activate it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vkR0B7pOFyU.html
Love your channel and we'll be using your affiliate links when we start making reservations for our trip to Japan needy year. If you have multiple people in a family traveling together to Japan, would eSIMs on each phone work better than all sharing one pocket WiFi?
Hi, and thank you so much :) Yes, if you have multiple people what makes having eSIMs better than a pocket wifi is that you can travel separately and still have internet. Whereas with a pocket wifi you all need to be in the nera vicinity of eath other in order for internet to work. So, pocket wifi is great if you have young kids like us or if you will always be in group. Otherwise, it is hard to be eSIM.
tl;dr: Ubigi was unusable for me whenever in a crowded environment in Tokyo. So I bought Ubigi for our trip to Tokyo this Xmas (still in Tokyo as I type this) and it’s a HUGE disappointment. Basically unusable when it’s in a crowded environment. I was skeptical the first time in Isetan when the reception was terrible. Today we spent all day in Tokyo Disneyland and it was basically dead over 50% of the time. Trying someone else tmr.
Sorry to hear about your experience with Ubigi but we appreciate you sharing your details so others can make informed decisions. The Tokyo Disney area does have a lot of dead spots. You might want to try Airalo since they use the Softbank network vs Docomo, which is what Ubigi uses. good luck!
When exactly do you turn on the eSIM? Before you leave home? After landing in Japan? (Do you need Wi-Fi connection in order to log in to the eSIM account and turn it on?)
It depends on the carrier. In general You want to activate as close to your arrival as possible. Yes you need WiFi to be able to activate. WiFi is available at all airports for free.
Hi ... your channel has been so helpful to my plans for Japan this October... however we are coming from Australia... will require an esim on my Samsung S24 and physical sim for a spare travel Samsung... will these providers work well for us using an esim... and would it be advisable to grab a physical sim when we land at Narita? Thank you... you are very clear and easy to listen too?
Hi, yes all should work fine. We have tested these eSIMs and SIMs multiple times and are confident in them. However, if you are concerned you can reach out to the eSIM companies to be sure your phone won't have any issues. We also have an updated video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9t-ubj4jNps.html
Thank you, informative. What are the settings on a iphone to use eSim but keeping your primary number active, so you still can receive and send text using the data only plan. Thank you in advance for any assistance.
Hi, on an iPhone when you add your new eSIM, do not disable your primary number (home number). Then in the settings for your home number be sure to have data roaming on. Under your Home number > Data Roaming > On Also, if you don't want to accidentally use your home data plan for the internet turn off data switching. Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > switch off Allow Cellular Data Switching
Hi, here are a couple of things that can help: 1) Try to use WiFi whenever possible, so have your WiFi on. 2) On an iPhone you can disable apps that use data. So if you know of a particular app that uses a lot of data such as a web browser or RU-vid, you can disable access to it from your cellular data eSIM. You can find this under cellular settings. There is probably something similar on Android phones.
Love your videos thank you! This may sound stupid but when a plan says ex: 3gig/30days does that mean you have only 3gig for the entire 30 days or does it mean you have 3gig every day for 30 days? Thanks again robert
@@KenshoQuest thanks for getting back to me so quickly. In your video you mention 3 ESIM companies and their plans 1gig/3gig/5gig for 1 week or 1 month. thank you
@@KenshoQuest I did reply. I hope it was not to a hacker. In you video you explain different plans with different carriers. of ESIMS. For comparison you selected 3g-5g-10g. I am wondering if that is a p/day amount of gigs or for the term of the contract ie 1 week- 30 days? If it is the total to be used in 1 week or 30 days then I need to calculate how much I will need p/day and multiply it by the number of days of the trip which will be a much larger number than 1-5 or 10gig. A 2week trip at 3gig a day would require around 42 gig. Thank you
@@rappere11 Hi, sorry for the late reply. It's common that we don't get notifications once a thread has started with comments. For each of thse 3G-5G-10G that is for the entire length of the plan. So it certainly can be 3GB for 30 days. I hope this clears things up. If you need 42 GB I highly recommend Mobal. They even offer larger plans now.
Practical question. Should I buy and insert the esim only in the trip day or can I do it before, and let it inactive? Since its just for 30 days I was wondering if is there a way to insert starting date. Also, how much data do you usually use? I have no clue how much I will need it.
Hi, great question. It depends on who you sign up with. Every carrier has a different way of doing things. But it is best to buy and install close to your trip date as most will auto-activate after a few days. As far as data usage, without knowing what you will use your data for, it is impossible to answer. But if you will only be using for maps, light internet and social media, then 10 GB should last you a month. For me, I would need at least 50GB as I use a lot of data.
Hi, not the answer you want but it really depends on how much data you think you will use. If mostly for GPS, maps and web browsing then you will most likely use less than 1GB/day but if you plan to also watch videos then that can increase significantly. Once you have an idea of this then decide on for how many days.
Thank you for such great content! I am traveling to Japan for about 14 days in March. My question is how much data would I generally need for a plan? I would be basically using my phone for only for web browsing, maps, minimal streaming, etc. Thanks for any tips!
Hi, thanks for watching and for your question. I recommend a minimum of 10GB for 14 days. Airalo is having a sale right now for 10 Gb data plan and the good thing is you can top up if you run low. (aff link) airalo.pxf.io/ZQJnJQ
Hi, I would check out both Japan Wireless and Mobal. They are both very good companies and both offer long-term service as well. They are both linked in the description :)
Hi! Great Vid! Thanks :) Do you know if I buy an ESIM from Mobal for 16 days, if it activates automatically after purchase? I want to buy one in advance and only activate the time period for these 16 days once I'm there
Hi, when you purchase, you will be given a link to your account page. Once in your account page you can choose to activate your eSIM or wait. If you choose to activate, you will be issued your QR code as well as manual codes. Once this is issued, your account will become active in 3 days, whether or not you have completed the activation of the eSIM on your phone.
The bad thing about eSIM is that you can't stop other devices from tracking your phone. See, tracking a phone is done by tracking the physical SIM card, so to avoid this, one simply removes the SIM card from the phone and toss it away. If the SIM is embedded hardware-wise, though, one has to toss away the phone, instead.
this is very helpful. Planning to visit Japan on December. Should we buy and activate while in our home country (Bangladesh)? Or we should go to japan and then activate?
HI, I just answered this in How to Activate eSIM :) It depends. In most cases you will want to wait until you arrive at the airport in Japan. Then use their free wifi to activate. However, if you purchase a longer plan and will not be using all the days then you can certainly activate ahead of time. Just remember, with most eSIMs as soon as you activate, your days start. I hope this helps!
Extremely helpful - thank you so much! I am off to Japan for 30 days, mid-November to mid-December, and I am looking forward to trying out an eSim. I really only need data for map directions while away from my hotel. Otherwise, I am using a VPN for wifi at a hotel. Do you recommend using a VPN for the eSim connection? It is very simple to use it but I am just curious.
Glad it was helpful! You have plenty of options since you mainly need your data for maps :) Using a VPN is always recommended. We try to always have it on but do forget sometimes!
Thanks for the info! I do have a question though and hopefully you'll be able to help. Do you know if mobal throttles after a certain usage per day or is it only after using up 50gb does it throttle?
Hi, Yes they will. Every mobile carrier that doesn't own their network - ( MVNOs, and resellers ) - which is almost every single eSIM carrier including the 3 reviewed in this video are under the fair usage policy, which means if the network provider, NTT Docomo ( not Mobal ) can throttle you if they feel you are using a large amount of data ( probably between 3-5GB ) over a short period of time. This did not happen to us with Mobal but it certainly can. If it does, the reset usually happens around 11pm - midnight.
This video was very informative! Do you know if there is an expiry date for pre purchased e sims? I am planning to buy the e sim now(because there is a sale on it at the moment) but won’t be travelling to Japan until mid May
Hi, it depends on the service provider. Some will auto-activate after a set number of days while others, I believe Ubigi will not activate until you scan your QR code. So, Ubigi might work for you but Please double check with the company you are choosing.
We are visiting Japan and Seoul from Canada in mid April 2024 for 15 days. Which esim you recommend to be used at both countries and how much data. Kindly respond I am your subscriber.
Hi, while I haven't tested in Seoul yet, I have tested both Ubigi and Airalo in SE Asia in addition to Japan with very good success. Both offer global plans for Asia.
@@KenshoQuest, so I grabbed this and have had it for two weeks. I actually got two as I am working from Japan (so not doing much travel outside Tokyo central itself) and one for my wife (who is doing "School excursions" within Tokyo and within 1-day travel). I find I never use it - apart from testing it. So I would say, unless you have a specific reason for having a Japanese mobile number, it's not worth it (which you alluded to in your video as well). I think roaming deals are soo good today; this and even pocket wifi and JP data eSIMS are not *required* though, if you are paranoid like me, worth having one of each just in case 😀 YMMV.
Hi. I’m flying in October to Japan. Will be there for just 15 days. I’m looking for a provider that offers unlimited data for the span of those 15 days, which one is the best?
Hi, I think both Japan Wireless and mobal are good options for you. Just remember that there really is no 'unlimited data' as you can get throttled If you use too much data in a short period of time. Thanks for this timely video! We are considering eSim for the three of us. With eSim, do I need to remove my mobile carrier’s sim card while it’s in use? I like the idea of Google fi, but don’t know if there’s time to activate, switch from our old carrier, and transfer our current numbers before our trip. Thanks again!
Hi, great question! You do not need to remove your mobile carrier's sim card while you are using an eSIM. You have the option to disable it but depending on your phone you most likely will be able to have both your physical SIM as well as your eSIM active at the same time... If you want :)
@@KenshoQuest thank you. I'm guessing that I would switch to airplane mode and attach to the eSim via the phone's Wifi? I don't want to access our US carrier at all to avoid any international fees. Thanks again. Our son lives in Japan and the current plan is to get SIMs for us for our visit, but this gives us more options.
Hi, funny thing. I cut your question out of the video because I thought it was getting too long 😜! You do not need to put your phone on airplane mode. Instead there is a switch called Data Switching. You can turn that off from your main line. Once that is off, your phone will never switch to use your US Carrier. I hope this is clear. I will probably make a short video on this.
@@ElephantMolly Thanks for the feedback, we'll have a video soon with some tips on setting up eSIMs which will including answering this question. Let us know if you have other questions or concerns.
Great video! I may go with Ubigi eSIM over my Tmobile cellular service. Question - In the How To Use section, it states "Ubigi is a data-only service. Use VOIP services for calls and text messages." Is the text messages the same as SMS? I don't think so as their is no number to the eSIM. What are they referring to as "Text message?" TIA
Hi, sorry for the confusion. You will not be able to send text messages with an eSIM from Ubigi nor airalo since they are data only plans. For texting you will need to use a service like WhatsApp or Line, which is the main choice in Japan. If you do need an eSIM with voice capability then you can send and receive texts through that type of service. Just very recently, Mobal is now offering eSIMs with voice and text, so you might want to check them out.
Hi, glad to be of help! Yes! We've used it numerous times and never had any issues. As you as you disable airplane mode, your phone will start connecting to Google Fi immediately.
Thank you for yr response! I plan to keep my phone active thru google fi like you guys do! What would you do if you were doing a southeast asia for 6 months I know Airalo has limited internet but you can always purchase data but I hear Holafly is unlimited?
@@johnrivera2615 When in SE Asia we only use eSIMs for brief periods of time, and only if we need them. Instead, it is best to buy on the spot at the airport or once in town. Reason is almost all eSIMs are data only. Whereas if you buy once in the SE Asia country you can buy an eSIM with a phone number and practically unlimited data for much less! It's very easy to do. Just have your passport in hand. The airport is the easiest place to do this, however you might pay a slightly higher fee. Holafly is overrated in my humble opinion, especially in SE Asia for reasons I just mentioned. I hope this helps!
Hi Kensho, That was a really great video, and thanks for the information. We are very keen to use eSIM and have 2 questions for you: Have you tried to activate an eSIM with the airport Wi-Fi? Since eSIM activation requires a stable Internet, I am a bit concerned about this. Another question is, do you think including 5G in the plan is a great deal in Japan? We will be travelling in Hakata, Saga, Oita, Kumamoto, and Kyoto. What is your suggestion?
Hi, we have not had any issues using the free WiFi to activate our eSIMs at many of the airports in Japan. As for 5G, I think it is a personal preference as it is still being rolled out in Japan.
For Airalo, when does the validity period start, when I download the app at home or when I get to Japan? There's a sale on Airalo and I want to buy it now, but my trip is not for another month.
Hi, are you able to purchase and not activate? I think you should have some time as long as you don't actually activate it. Sorry I can't help you more on this. Also, airalo typically has a sale every month. If it's Feb15 this month, next month it will most likely be March15 ;)
For Mobal eSIM, do I purchase and click the link when I arrive in Japan? Or can I click on it at my home country and select the effective start date when registering? I'm assuming when I arrive in Japan it will automatically transition to Mobal eSIM during my stay? Sorry ... eSIMs are new to me. Thanks for your help!
Hi, it's confusing for everyone ;) If you are purchasing an eSIM with a Japanese number then you can purchase it now, then after you collect it in Japan, you will need to show your ID then you can start the activation process. If you purchase just a data eSIM from Mobal then you can still purchase ahead of time. The key is to not start the activation process until you are ready to start using your eSIM. Otherwise, it will auto-activate in 3 days regardless if you are ready or not. Once you start the activation process you should be up and running within 15-20 minutes. I hope this helps!
Hi, there are plenty of physical SIMs available for tourists. You can get them at many tourist spots throughout Japan including the airport, though it will be more expensive at the airport. I have not heard of keisei SIM, sorry. But I have used Mobal's physical SIM for a couple of months and it worked great.
The pocket WiFi is great when we need a lot of data and are altogether as a family (playing games online, uploading videos, etc). But as soon as we go our separate ways, only the person with the pocket WiFi still has internet connection. That’s why it’s good to also have eSIMs, for times we split up while shopping, at amusement parks, etc. 🌺 Heidi
Hi, thanks for the video. I am planning to purchase Ubigi esim while visiting Japan. If I am going to visiting Japan twice, do I need to re-activate the Ubigi esim on my 2nd purchase esim.
Thanks for your video. I'm afraid I am confused about my phone. I have an iPhone 14, and have Metro PCS as my provider. They don't have that in Japan, even if I have an iPhone with an eSim card. So, do I need to buy a plan in Japan? Thank you. PS--it is unlocked.
Hi, yes, if your phone is unlocked then you can and need to purchase a plan for Japan since Metro PCS is not available. The three choices mentioned in the video are all good. It just depends on your needs for data. Also, if you need a Japanese phone number while in Japan, you might be interested in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aQU42wIbDtU.html I hope this helps.
@@KenshoQuest Thanks so much. I have something called Line, I think you might know of. The only other things I need for WIFI are my laptop and just texting people or calling home in the US.
Hi, both can work with Ubigi and Airalo since they both offer global or Asia plans that will cover both countries. So it's great for convenience. But take into consideration that in Thailand it is much easier and cheaper to get a SIM/eSIM on the spot. Also, in Thailand it can sometimes be easy to get an eSIM with a Thai number as well. Just have your passport ready, you can do this at the airport.
Hi, it depends on where you purchase it from and where you are going. I am assuming you are going to Japan so with the 3 companies I discussed in the video, you can purchase now. But, do not install until you are closer to your travel date asa again each of these companies have different rules. Let me know if you have further questions.
Thank you so much! Do you still have Mobal Support's email with the esim installation instructions? I am booking a voice esim with them next month and am a little nervous.
Hi, here is a link to their help page. Since this video was made the process seems to be easier. At least it was for me the last time I tried it :) support.mobal.com/tourist-esim/general/getting-started/installing-your-esim/
Hi, yes we've used them all and all work very well. If you choose to install Mobal early just don't activate it. Once you do, your service will start automatically regardless if have a connection or not. In general I recommend that you wait until you arrive in Japan to complete activation, but if this is your first time you can practice by partially going through the process, just don't go through the full activation process.
Hello, I was thinking of taking the Moral eSIM for my trip next March. Since, what they send is an activation link, can I order now in case of a price raise and only activate it the day of departure or can I wait the last moment to purchase it?
Hi, great question. I do not know how long you have to activate but as an example. I waited over a month before I activate my Mobal eSIM. What is important is once you have your activation code issued, you need to install it and activate within 3 days. Otherwise, your plan will start regardless. So make sure you are ready to use it when you have your code issued. You can certainly purchase at last minute as well. It takes about 15 minutes for your activation code to be issued. But take into consideration that they have server downtime on Tuesday nights from 2200 Japan time.
Each eSIM can only be installed on one device. Some phones can have multiple eSIMs. For instance, recent iPhones can have several but usually only a couple can be active at once
When you buy a prepaid chip, do you momentarily lose the use of your original chip , without accessing your number? Like, won't people be able to talk to you on your original number?
Hi, I'm not certain I understand your question bu there goes: It depends... when using eSIMs, your phone should have the capability to have more than one eSIM at a time. However, depending on your phone make/model, will determine whether or not you can have more than one eSIM active at once. So, when you add a new eSIM DO NOT DELETE YOUR CURRENT eSIM, instead add a new one. Then choose it as Active. As mentioned above, this might make your original eSIM inactive. If this is the case, then your phone only allows one active at once. So if you need to use your original. You can go through the settings and change your active eSIM back to your original. Now, if your phone as a regular physical sim as well as eSIM, then you can most likely have both active at once, this is called dual SIM capability.
Hello, we are going to Japan in late May of 2024 for 11 days with my kids, who are teenagers. Do I get esim card for each person or just a pocket wifi or both? I need data for getting signal during subway/train. Also, need data during traveling time because we will be on a land tour on the second week so we can watch videos or play games during that period. What do you recommend?
Hi, great questions. If your kids are going to be together the whole time then one pocket wifi would work great since it can work as a hotspot and usually connect 10 or more devices. Also, pocket wifis usually have a lot more data which makes it great for watching videos and playing online games. The one caveat with a pocket wifi, you need to be in the vicinity for it to get a signal. If you are all going separate ways at times and need internet then individual eSIMs are a great option. However, each device needs to be unlocked and eSIM compatible. You might want to watch this video for more information about choosing between a pocket wifi and sim: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2fhdT0Ubxmo.html Let us know if you have further questions and have a great trip!
Thank you so much for your info. What if I get an esim for each person but I noticed each esim company either have 1 day, 8 days or 30 days. If I buy the 10 gb for 30 days then is there a throttle per day? What I meant is there cap per day? If I used up 10 go in two days is ok or not because I noticed the 30 days plan is better for a higher gb and cheaper?
@@vlvl1870 Yes, it is possible you will be throttled. If that does happen full speed usually returns between 11pm - 12am. throttling usually only happens if you use a sudden burst of a lot of data.
Hi, yes and no. If you are communicating with others who also have an Apple device then yes. If you want to message someone who is not on an apple device then no. If you need to communicated with users who aren't on an Apple device then I recommend you get an eSIM with a Japanese number. Mobal has that. Here is a video on that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aQU42wIbDtU.html
Important video, thanks. So, many to choose from 😮 Didnt know that you can have multiple Esim in your phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, will be getting S24 in January 2024 when it comes out. That's a bummer, none gives you a Japanese phone number for 30 days in JP. So, which Esim has phone #, data, text?
HI, the only way we know of getting am eSIM with Japanese number with data and text is to visit a carrier in Japan, such as NTT Docomo. But it won't be easy, they will ask for proof or address in Japan among other things. Will the S24 have a physical SIM? If so then you can get a regular SIM from mobal as mentioned in the video. It will provide everything you need.
Do you know if the Mobal 50gb eSIM throttles data after a certain GB usage per day? You mentioned that pocket WiFi’s are better for larger amounts of data, but they have daily limits. I was hoping to use just a Mobal 50GB eSIM as a hotspot for my family but am concerned that we will get throttled.
Hi, it depends on if you plan to share your internet with other devices regularly then a pocket WiFi is better as it will be overall cheaper and you won’t have to worry about you phone getting hot and losing battery quickly. But if you will only occasionally connect other devices then an eSIM is a good choice
HI, it's a little different with each carrier and country. For airalo and Japan you can install your eSIM now. It will not become active until it connects to one of Japan's networks. Hence it won't become active until you are in Japan.
How much data is necessary per week when in tourist mode and using maps for the most part? I haven't been to Japan since the 90's and maps on mobile phones weren't the norm back then. 👴
