Hmm, maybe, although I'm still waiting for her to improve her showings at the AO, and especially Wimbledon. She'll never truly be considered amongst the greats if she can't consistently take titles at anything but the one GS. Mind you, at 23, she's got plenty of time to keep improving. At present she's still consistently well ahead of the others.

Wow! Justine Henin held that number 1 for a while! If she had a bigger ego, she would have been neck to neck with Serena or probably surpassed her in terms of the female GOAT in tennis! When henin was healthy and dominated, the williams sisters faltered. With injuries, it shortened her career. The greatest woman tennis player to not have won wimbeldon. On a positive note, she won 1 australian open, 2 U.S. opens, 4 French opens, won a gold medal in olympics, and won the season ending tournament twice. A great career indeed.

@@jujumusique1305 you have a point and it can be debated but the competition during henin's time was stronger considering the williams sisters were at peak already. Clisters, Mauresmo and Davenport were at peak as well. Sharapova was young, strong, and healthy. Graf even dominated her rivalry with seles. The variety as well of henin's game was undeniably special as she had the sliced backhand weapon and the superb volley skills. She had finesse which was compared with the great Roger Federer. Seles was just a pure baseliner. Seles never won olympic gold as well.

@@AttyMark-ks6fg I’m not sure how trailing 1-3 in slam finals is “dominating” a rivalry when it comes to Graf vs Seles before Hamburg. It was 6-4 (not 8-1) and Seles has won all the big matches but one. Agree on the field though one may argue that Henin peaked precisely when the sisters were going through somewhat of a slump. But the field comment applies to the Graf vs Serena debate and Graf fans usually hate it ;)

@@jujumusique1305the head to head is what matters. Graf leads seles 10-5. Its true that serena lead 8-6 against henin but take note she was older and turned pro in 1995 while henin only turned pro in 1999. Late 2003 was henin's start of peak year until 2007 when she was healthy. She led 5-2 against williams from 2003 to 2007. Serena went alive again when henin was out in parts of 2004 and 2005 due to health issues and injuries. Then dominated 2008 onwards when henin retired due to injury. Thus, no one can argue that when henin was at peak, serena wasnt as the latter even dominated the game until 2015. Had henin been healthy, who knows what would have happened as she retired at only 25 years of age in 2008. During her comeback, she was nowhere her true form yet still gave serena a hard time in 3 sets in the AO finals. For seles, she only had to think of one person and that was graf.

Hingis didn't retire as No 1 in the women's singles. She was retiring first in early 2003, as towards the end of the 2002 season she began her period of decline and Serena was already the undisputed world no 1 coming through the season after winning Wimbledon. Remember back in 2002 Serena won 3 out of 4 slams and she carried on with winning the AO[Hingis most successful GS tournaments where she wasnt in the final for the first time since 1997]. It was in 2001 where Hingis would recapture the no 1 status for the last time and by the time she went out of retirement in 2003, she was already out of the top ten. When she came out of retirement in 2006 to play the women's singles and occasionally doubles and mixed doubles matches, she was only able to climb up as high as at no 6 in the world if i remember it correctly. She did, however, retired as a no 1 in doubles after the wta finals 2017, her last time on the tour.

You can't call her average player. She has 5 GS finals which she won RG and Wimbledon, plus other 23 tournaments, including Madrid, Roma, Toronto, Roger Cup, Indian Welss, etc.
