Where are you shooting the eclipse from in April?

Rockland County New York lower Hudson Valley (N partial eclipse). My first time videorecording the sun. I do have the DayStar Filters 50mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter. I couldnt afford the glass filter.

Just want to put out there that older DSLRs and cameras with OPTICAL VIEWFINDERS should only use SOLAR FILM to view the sun. Looking at the sun with a ND filter should only be used with EVFs. Got this information from B&H's website while researching what filter to buy.

Great advice. I took your advice and the images were stunning. I went with the Tiffen 18 stop ND filter from B&H (anniversary edition). At 95mm, it was not cheap, but the difference in sharpness between solar film and the glass filter was significant. And since I live in the center of totality, it was worth the cost for this once-in-a-lifetime event. Since a ND filter is NOT safe for your eyes, I took the cup off the eyepiece and put on the little cover that is most often used to prevent light from entering through the viewfinder for long exposures. Just that little extra step to keep myself from doing something incredibly stupid. Thanks for all your help! It is much appreciated.

Thank you for your informative video! B & H have several "solar" filters available. But they all have the warning that "This product protects your camera and allows for safe solar photography only; it is not ISO 12312-2 compliant and therefore not safe for direct viewing of the Sun. Always use approved ISO 12312-2 certified safety glasses when viewing the Sun directly. Never use photographic neutral density filters for direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder." Are there any lens filters that are ISO 12312-2 compliant?

The Thousand Oaks solar film gives the yellow orange tint that to attribute to glass. Or just adjust the tint in Lightroom or Photoshop.

I was surprised that you described the sun's correct color to be yellow/orange. It's actually...bone white...if your solar filter gives you a white sun...that filter is color accurate.
@RMSPtv
@RMSPtv 2 месяца назад
True! But we've all become accustomed to seeing the sun as yellow/orange in photos so that's the more "natural" color that we've come to expect.
@JACKnJESUS
@JACKnJESUS 2 месяца назад
@@RMSPtv That may be true...unfortunately...but I can start with the correct 'color' and make it whatever I want to. If you start out orange/yellow...you'll never get that bone white...with any detail. Buy the accurate filter...and get all of the options...no?
@RMSPtv
@RMSPtv 2 месяца назад
Good point! You could always desaturate the color version too. I’ve found that removing color from something is much easier than trying to add it back in.

Planning to drive up to upstate NY, but also planning on being ready to drive south pending the weather. If you’re using screw in filters, I just found that Kase sells a $30 adapter that will make any of your screw-in filters magnetic. Might make swapping on/off the filter easier during totality. Still testing to see if I’m going to use my new TO solar filter or my old Lee solar filter, but also just got a MSM Nomad tracker to start playing around with.

I have question if I may. I purchased a SANDMARC Telephoto 6x for my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I sent SANDMARC an email about what solar filter I should use. I received an answer we do not have a recommended filter for the solar eclipse. However, you can definitely use the Telephoto lens 6x as a stand alone when taking the solar eclipse event. Then I asked, Ok, thanks for the reply. Are you also saying I don't need a filter if I use the Telephoto 6x on my iPhone 15 Pro Max? Nothing is going to get damaged on my phone or Telephoto 6x lens. Their answer was Yes, that is correct. So they are telling me no solar filter is needed and I won't damage my camera. What do you think of this? Seems crazy to me.

I have been watching a few of your videos today, and want to thank you for all the great information. I have just picked my (old Canon EOS Rebel XTi) camera up after having not used it in quite a few years, so I'm not as prepared as I should have been for this upcoming eclipse event (2024). I was however able to purchase a filter for my Sigma 18-200mm lens, which is the K&F Concept variable ND2-32, NANO-X Series Filter. You have mentioned in a previous video to be using an ND100000 F16 filter during non-totality of the eclipse. Seeing that this filter adjusts from 2 to 32, am I good to go, because I do not see anything about ND100000 on this filter, or am I just wasting my time?
@RMSPtv
@RMSPtv 2 месяца назад
I think that filter should work well! Just test it today or tomorrow before eclipse day. I would start at the darkest (32 stops) and work backwards from there.

I made my filter with a 6x6" sheet of Baader film. I bought a new lens hood and attached the film to it using thick cardboard (from Ikea) and hot glue. I cut a hole in one sheet of cardboard and attached it to the hood so it was flush to the front of the hood. Then I taped on the Baader film to the cardboard, fully covering the hole. Then I cut a hole in a second sheet of cardboard and glued it onto the front. I also used some white cardstock to cover everything so it stays cool. The cardboard is the 1" thick stuff that you get with Ikea furniture, so the film is pretty far inside and well protected. I'm also making a cover from foam board for it so I can transport it safer.

I was reading in forums that the nd100k won’t fully protect since nd filters don’t reduce infrared at all. How true is that? I returned my tiffen and purchased a 12x12 sheet from thousandoaks just to be safe.

You would just need to adjust your exposure by five stops from my recommendation (4 stops for the filter, one stop for f/8 instead of 5.6.)

My glass filter renders a white sun. It’s only those really expensive filters that are orange.
@ziglet3616
@ziglet3616 2 месяца назад
Honestly, if you are going to go the glass route, avoid the screw on filters and get a real glass solar filter, you can attach them to the front element or lens hood. They may be disigned for telescopes but can also work on photo lenses. Also, if you are shooting totality, get that filter off. you don't need it. Lastly, Avoid filters like LEE Filters 100x100mm Solar Eclipse Filter, they don't give you the orange tint. no matter how much post work you do.
