I reached out to John with some questions about compounds, polishes, and pads on a Sunday on Facebook a few weeks ago. He responded rather quickly and answered a few other questions I ad. Admirable to say the least. The information John provides and the level of detail mixed with honesty is hard to come by in any field.

Really enjoying these videos! Would love to see you test 1-step compounds like Sonax Cut & Finish and Scholl's S20 Black. Also, I wish 3D HD product were available to you. I've always considered HD Polish+ and Scholl's S40 & S30+ to be the best finishing abrasives. I'd also love to see you test out the 1-step cleaner waxes or AIO's. HD Speed, Menzerna 3n1, Meguiar's D166, etc. You should do an indepth forensic video on why you make all the other detailing related channels look like a bunch of amateurs.haha. You're too nice of a guy to say it but we're all thinking it. Merry Christmas John!

appreciate the kind words. the whole you tube game is a wierd thing. tbh this channel doesnt function very well as a proper you tube channel. everything is too long and the production is not great and that effects the take up and growth of it, its a slow growing small channel. The channels that get this right, deserve all their success, its such a hard thing to go in front of the camera and put out info and remain credible. really enjoying doing the channel at the moment, its been such a cool way to interact with so many cool people. I think a lot of the people that watch FDC are really into their detailing. because the quality of the info that comes back in the comments is always first class, I read it and sort of get good steers on other products to check out. merry xmas matt

The signature trait of perfect finish for me is it's ability to finish down great on basically any paint. Great on sticky paints and solid colors without clear coat etc. If you are having trouble getting a desired finish on a car in the future, try the pf, it's almost fool proof.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 6 лет назад
Im sure its gonna be very solid.. but ive been a bit put off by the range and how sonax have developed it to be used. had a good chat with another guy about it in this video comments below. that and the huge price tag we pay for it in the Uk? why when you can get fantastic abrasives for 30 quid a litre, why pay 44? Its priced off the market over here and sonax have want you to use it on a rotary with wierd tilt sets... just bizarre.. developed for body shop and instructions written for people that want to compound out sanding marks in 20 seconds.. thats not me. when I use it the way I want to use it thats wrong apparently. so im sulking :(
@Pierriewargen
@Pierriewargen 6 лет назад

I use M205 as my go-to polish and have for years. I bought a gallon of the stuff for $25 when a local detail shop closed it’s doors, so I’m sitting on a lifetime supply. Per your recommendation Jon, I have added Menzerna 3800 to my arsenal as either a jeweling polish, or occasionally as a stand alone product for “super light” micro-marring. Menzerna 3800 tends to leave slightly more gloss than M205, but of course has less cutting ability to remove light to moderate swirls. Merry Christmas from St. Louis, Missouri (USA).

This and the cutting compound vid have been interesting Jon boy! For me I've been an Scholl & Sonax person....many, many years ago Farecla & 3M......Bodyshop bash it out days!!😱😜😆.... sorry I digress, last 6 month's was introduced to Koch (H8, P2 & M2) products and these are now my go-to with Scholl (S3gold, S20black & S40) still in my kit bag.....still use Sonax perfect finish (until it's empty) as a one step for new car preps, ready for coating. No equipment/product secrets with me! Totally agree with your findings, Jon, KC & Scholl for me👍 Top vid, Jon, merry xmas mate

Gents, when looking at a new car prep, and polishing the clear coat with v. minimal cut or abrasion to it, is it S40 over S20 Black? Or is the another polishing compound which is more appropriate for new car. Afterwards I'll seal with Moonlight/Wet Coat. Thanks in anticipation.

yer see what your saying, although get perfect finish on a rotary and work it harder and perhaps faster and it has a really decent level of mid range cut, specially for something that looks so good. its a good abrasive.

@@ForensicDetailing I like what you said ' it is definitley not a 'finishing' polish'. on a scale of 1-10 where 1 is heaviest compound and 10 is finishing polish, mid is 4,5,6, this is a 7.5/8.5 on the scale. Like you I want finishing polish at 9/10 on my scale..

Good stuff John...Recently purchased Sonax PF and yes it's expensive. I was also surprised to see the rating on bottle at 4 for cut so I'm keen to see how it stands up against S20. I was able to remove 2000gt sanding marks using PF and wool pad on rotary which is really more an " I'm just saying " statement rather than boasting about it's cutting power.. But it was a late model Honda so paint soft. The winner here is the Gloss Meter which was able to separate the tiny differences. All hail the Gloss Meter... To the naked eye it would be hard pressed to separate these...I guess it really comes down to brand preference and price for us consumers, paint/environmental conditions for polish and technique of detailer. Unless one needs to water down one's polish for softer paints....Me Lord. It's a weird thing because once I select which one I'm using I always wonder as I'm working would the others have been a better choice...Detailers Mind Games 101.

It all comes down to $$$$...There's a lot of products and it would be helpful if cheaper samples were readily available. They're like laundry detergents always new and improved. I'm a big fan of Menzerna 4000. BTW Sonax PF isn't sold here in Aus so I had to search Eng/EU/US...Cheapest I could find was $119aud/LT from US....Ouch!!!!

Enjoying watching your videos - Following your guides I did a decontamination and DA polish today on the bonnet of my Mineral Grey BMW for paint correction. Pleased with the results on removal of the light swirl marks but I've ended up with white polish spots in the tiny stone chips looks terrible.! I've tried using IPA and quick detail spray got some of the polish out the chips but still looks like it's been dusted with white spray. Got any tips to get the polish out?
@daryldevine8517

Whilst gloss is obviously important in a finishing polish, that's only half of the battle - some will look much crisper and wetter than others due to a few different reasons but their initial abrasiveness is obviously a big reason. Scholl S40 is the flat out ultra finishing polish IMO. 5000 grit means it has minimal cut which allows an incredibly crisp finish with insane definition which the more abrasive 'finishing polishes' can't beat. Oh, and on dark colours, especially black, S40 darkens the colour and is the best finishing polish I've ever used. To use it though, the car needs to be near flawless as S40 has very little cut.
@jtm1979
@jtm1979 6 лет назад
Good video again. S40 is mildern than the other polishes ans i would use it only on very soft paints. S30 would be in same category with the rest. M205 cuts most.and like ita bigger brothers, it is a smat polishs. My favourites are M201 and Gyeon polish.

Very interesting and eye opening, I’m a long time user of Sonax PF and have always been impressed by its finish. Looks like I will have to experiment with the Koch range a little more, I already use the H8 cutting compound but didn’t realise the M2 anti-hologram was a finishing polish.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 6 лет назад
its a terminology thing.. they tend to call it anti holograming in the manufacturing finshing process. And koch process are used in the industry a lot over in germany. they typically sand out defects and then remove polishing marks with wool on rotaries at high speeds and generate buffer trails.. then finish out the buffer trails with polish on foam pads.

Hello. Do You use paint cleaner like IPA solution or Panel Wipe before gloss readings? Because absolutely all polishes ( some more, some less) leaves thin film which will mask imperfections and add some gloss. BTW for this reason I stop using Sonax PF as a one step polish, only for finishing/jewelling stage. PF is not so abrasive as shown on label. Thanks for Your videos, watch them all. I've never used a machine polisher before, but fancy getting one. I'm torn between the Scholl S20 and the Scholl S40. I've got a 9 year old Focus, so it's nothing fancy, but I do want to improve the gloss finish a bit. I tend to polish and wax by hand twice a year, so the paintwork is in pretty good nick. What would you recommend between the two compounds? Is the S40 going to give a good finish, or would I just be better getting the S20? I use Autoglym Super Resin Polish and their HD wax currently. Thanks in advance for any recommendations

@ForensicDetailing

generally if theres lots of swirls then theres a whole range of depth of scratch and its like peeling layers off an onion.. but say you needed to do like 2-3 compounding sets. thats heavy correction and you want to be maximising (without reason) the amount of cut your tooling and pad setup with reasonably allow.

With S40 I were able to remove the most visible swirl marks but after polishing there are still som light/micro swirls left. Shouldn’t S40 also be able to remove those given that it removed the more visible ones? Should I go for a more aggressive compound? I am using a DA polisher. Thanks in advance!

Did you use the same pad with all polishes? Looks like a hexlogic pad? Because that can change the results quite a bit. Some polishes like hardar pads etc. But really good video you answerd my questions about sonax pf thst ive heard so much good about in esoteric channel. Now i wouldnt buy it. Im curious about the scholl s40 but i have s1 s2bss and then megs m205 and menzerna sf3800 that got my eyes in your earlier vids. But maybe it isnt necessary to use s40 or sf3800 that ive not tried yet when ive done m205 before. My plan is to do compounding then m205 with a medium pad and then jewelling for maximum gloss with sf3800 and a soft pad. Whats your thoughts about that jon? Wish you a merry christmas and a hapoy new year and looking forward to a new year of greatest detailing videos on the planet. Youre a smart funny guy with the best testing and content on youtube. Great video Jon. Just a quick question on the Menzerna 3500. I’ve given that a try using my DAS6 Pro and a Meguiar’s black finishing pad on a cool day. No matter what speed I set my polisher to it just threw grey dust everywhere after two sets of horizontal & vertical passes. I’m new to this polishing lark so was a bit disappointed with that. Have you any idea what I’ve done wrong?

Did you by chance try a black pad with any of these polishes and see if the gloss meter went up? It's what Optimum recommends to polish with as it leaves the "nicest surface" according to them. Also Lake Country agrees with that as well. What do you think?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 6 лет назад
I have not done that test on the gloss meter comparing like a polishing pad with a very softer sort of finishing pad. my guess is its going to be really hard to be able to measure a difference in what gloss I can max out at. maybe thats one to video for the future trent

Try this out please, I'd like to see if it makes a measurable difference or if it's just jeweling "placebo".

I know this is a old video but I just want to see what to use to polish a brand new black truck that has misc cobweb scratches, water spots but overall the gloss is new but I’m having a hard time picking up a polish that will get them off in 1 step.

Was a tad confused here. Looks like you use the word compound and polish interchangeably and see that the products are actually a polish. Was there a previous step prior to polishing and testing gloss results ? Also the test panel is a flat small panel with a 3" DA which has very little orbit ( I believe 3/16" ). The other test panel ( the larger one ) is with a larger DA perhaps a Mikita . I did not hear the orbit size mentioned and am curious as to what the orbit is. I liked the pad as it has an octagon face on the high spots... I believe at least what I can see when you are dabbing the pad on the larger panel. Also by observing the Blue DA it appears the speed was about 4. ? How important is it to cross hatch you do not appear to be doing this you use a east west where as I use a east west north south and overlap 50% as you show. Personally I do not like swirl removers as a polish step and believe that they are actually a glaze which is a filler and most are a temporary fix. You have opened my eyes to trying S 40 by Abrafie looks like a fantastic product. Great information. Thank you

Does Sonax PF cut better than Koch M2/M3? Especially I am interested this for German clear coats.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 2 года назад
yes, PF is more a single stage. M2 M3 are more finishing polishes

Another great video mate nice one. I already have the scholl so I’m happy with the result! 👍🏻Can I ask hat speed should I be using with s40 on a long throw rotary? (Black car!) cheers mate
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 6 лет назад
long throw DA right? (or normal kind of high speed rotary). there is no right or wrong. I tend to whizz up the finishing polishes fast to just work the abrasives and refine the finish. and then either slow down and back off. or do a second polishing set with a lower speed and less pressure. sometimes though I just work them for a set and stop. using the finishing polishes is always nice and its the last chance to bring up the gloss. If your cutting then refining you might use them different to if your just giving the car a light finish. but try on the rotary working them at 900-1000 for 30second to a minute. and then slowing down and backing off for a minute roughly. that will deliver you high gloss.

Great video. Can you perhaps do a video on how to remove protection such as wax or sealants? For example if I want to ensure my wax is completely removed that I applied for the winter so I can use another product?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 6 лет назад
check out the video on pre wax cleaners luke. Its a real golden oldie bured away at the bottem of the videos. if you click the videos tab and order themin oldest first you will find it. I was using lime prime abrasive cleaner. Its highly effective but Im moving away from it because I find whatever solvent or cleaner is in it is a bit too potent for me. The only way to remove fresh wax or sealant is with an abrasive (polish or cleaner). If you use an abrasive polish though you have to then degrease that polish afterwards. So really an abrasive cleaner that doesnt contain oils is the way to go.. I just need to find one that words for me know as well.

thank you for fast respond .speed for cut 4 slow arm finishing 4-6 arm faster this is correct
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 6 лет назад
hey dan, so you can cut on the rupes at speed 4 sure.. theres no real right or wrong.. when you go top speed you can like perhaps overheat the compound and fry the pads.. so yes generally speed 3-4 will working fine for cutting.. you could push it up a bit if you need to. I always work to try and minimize the number of cutting sets I do. finishing I tend to whizz it up a bit faster, and then maybe back off and slow down with a final polish if you like.
