I just ordered 2x Godox MF12's with a Godox Pro trigger. I know the standard diffusion is bad, but I actually use white seedling bags, rip them apart and use that as diffuser. Works perfectly on my current flash and LEDs. So I hope I can fiddle it between the flash and diffuser caps to get better results.

I've been using the V350 (with my trusty hand-made diffuser) for 2 years now, it's still going super strong! Don't let anyone hate on Godox, they're a serious flash player. This one in particular is nice and light, has a great refresh time, and lasts for a ton of shots between battery changes. Extra rechargeable batteries are cheap, too!

I've been using the Godox 685. I'm fairly new to macro, although not that new to photography. I'm really enjoying this niche and have gotten some really good, (for me), results. I like the extra power the 685 has over the 350, and the flash itself runs about $120 here in the US. I would rather spend a little more up front, than have to purchase another flash down the road, because it just didn't have enough power. I can always dial it down, and have the advantage of quicker recycle times at lower power settings.

Hi Micael. Love your videos, there is so much I learn out of them! I have a question for you and everyone else here. I use a Canon R50 and recently bought a Godox TT685 II. With the flash mounted or even triggered, I find that the preview [in the viewfinder] is extremely grainy, which makes focussing almost impossible. What am I missing?

Useful video. Although I have Nissin flashes and transmitter I am now using custom LED Rotolight NEO II. Advantage is no regeneration time on flash, no batteries on the light to reduce weight, V-Lock D-Tap battery so virtually unlimited power supply, ability to use constant LED light so no restriction on shutter speed. I am still working on my customised system but already getting reasonable results currently using EM1 m3 and 90mm macro lens 😊

One of the key advantages of flash is the motion freeze associated with the high speed exposure. With your continuous light source, what sort of shutter speeds can you achieve at, say, f16? Also, what is the light quality like - harsh or nicely diffused?

I've had a TT685II for about a year, I love that thing but it seems to have an issue with the contact. It works well with a remote trigger but it makes the macro setup kind of unwieldy as I have to use one hand to hold the flash and another to hold the camera. I might take a look at the V350.

Hey Micael, do you know if the Godox Lux Junior is any good for macro? The form factor seems perfect and Godox has a better reputation for cooldown speeds than Meike which IMO can be a bit underpowered and unreliable.

Very helpful! Being very new to macro, my confusion is with my manual focus only lens. Since there is no AF from the camera, how is focus bracketing happening? I know you´ve spoken about the different diffusers you use in other videos but I´ve always wondered how you decide which ones to use in any particular situation. I have a globe diffuser similar to yours and am considering buying a Cygnustech. Still, I don´t have enough experience to know when I should use the globe with the flash off-camera or when it would be better to use the Cygnustech with flash on-camera. Wondering if you had any insights on the matter, thanks. Great videos as always.
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 10 месяцев назад
Honestly I don't think too much about it. I just vary between them to get some variation in my photography. An off camera flash with a globe diffuser is great when you want to get more creative with the light, and especially when you want to have the light behind the subject, which is a good idea when shooting water or raindrops. A diffuser like the Cygnustech with an on camera flash is very convenient as you only need one hand, and always gives a good result when shooting insects. It is the safe bet :)

The TT350 is a different flash that uses AA batteries and which is weaker. The v350 is much better. It is always best to buy the flash for your camera brand to ensure 100% compatibility, although in most cases you can use a flash across several camera brands.

Meike Mk320 is a good flash for macro because it is lightweight, low profile (closer to the lens) and most importantly it has built in LED torch so I can see what I am looking at...otherwise my EVF viewfinder would be too dark or noisy

As someone just getting into photography in general and interested in macro, I would love to hear your thoughts on filters. It seems no one recommends using filters for macro photography but, to the inexperienced like myself, it sounds like they can be useful, especially in bright sunlight. Would a polarising filter help eliminate the usual harshness of sunlight? Are there any circumstances when you would recommend using filters, with or without flash? Than you.

I actually made a video where I tried polarizing filter for macro photography. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UmLBhz4-y2w.html In general I never use any filters, because I haven't found any situations where they would help in macro photography.

Natural Sun “key” comes from one direction above with a 45° angle at mid-day - providing the most accurate 3D rendering of shape in 2D photos which is why ring light flash and crossed flash don’t create natural specular highlight and shadow clues which is why the type of over the lens diffuser produces more pleasing results. Adding a second flash behind the subject at a 45° downward and side angle is a great way to add a natural look of back-rim lighting sun at mid-day with the diffuser then acting like diffuse skylight.

I'm very confused with flashes. I have a6700 which can shoot 11fps burst. I want a flash that can keep up with the speed of the camera to get the best stacks for macro. I am having trouble understanding what flashes can do that. I have heard the V350 is too slow. Are the GODOX V860-II or V860-III or V1 fastest enough for this?

Just recently acquired a meike 320 flash fror my nikon and having some trouble figuring out how to use it because it doesn't come with a proper instruction manual. Although I change my aperture on my camera, on the flash screen I only ever see F5.6. Why could this be? Hi, first test with same gear and happy with my first results. But you are speaking of a shutterspeed of 1/200. Actually my shutterspeed changed to 1/100. Also,in the manual they mention that with focusbracketing the max speed is 1/100. Do you use another approach to use 1/200 with flash ?
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 8 месяцев назад
It’s good to use 1/200 when possible. But yes on the OM1 when stacking you can only go as high as 1/100 and that’s also fine when using a flash.

@@MicaelWidell Thank you. That video is very insightful. I do not like the proprietary battery of the V350 because when the company stops making it, the flash unit eventually becomes useless. I have flash and cameras from the 1960's and 70's that still work because they use standard batteries, but I also have a 1970's Kodak camera that is useless because the propietary battery hasn't been made for 20 years now, and all the cameras that use that battery are now useless. Unfortunately, while I chose the TT350 because of the AA batteries, I should have chosen the V350 and just accepted its unfortunate battery. I may need to get a V350 , now that I understand it's advantages and just keep the TT350 for when I need a second speedlight in the studio.

Hi there, great video! I use a Canon R5 and a canon 100 RF macro lens with a Canon Speedlight 430ex and a Popeshield. My problem is that using your settings, I have to turn the flash up to 1/4 or 1/2 and still need to increase the ISO to 200 or 400 to get a good exposure. And then, of course it needs to take some time to recharge so makes focus stacking much more difficult. What am I doing wrong!?
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 10 месяцев назад
Hmm either you are shooting at a very small aperture like f/16, or your flash is too weak. You could also try a diffuser with a "roof" that reflect light, like the AK diffuser, and then you could shoot at a lower strength. Could also be that the flash is too tall and shines above the diffuser so a lot of the light goes missing.

Last year I bought the Meike MK320 and I was happy with it. Till now, because suddenly it drains the batteries. Though the flash is turned off, the batteries are almost empty after one night. First I thought the batteries were no good (peneloop pro) and I bought new ones (Varta Ready2Use AA 2600 mAh), but the same thing happened. I know you can't solve this, but have you ever heard of it?
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 10 месяцев назад
Not sure. But in general a tip is to always charge the batteries so that you take them out of the charger immediately before you do your photography session. That way they will be the strongest. I ALWAYS take out the batteries and charge them after each use, then store them charged in a drawer for next use.
