For best performance of the sh2 mode, F8 is the fastest recommended.
Is that still true, or was it fixed over camera firmware update?

Hello Rob! thanks for your video. It's helping me immensely. When I tap zoom( 8:23 mark) it doesn't let me toggle between AU and M nor will it let me change the mm. The top of the displays read TTL M(in a little black box) and 12mm/zoom. I use a Fuji xt30ii.

Thank you for the time you put into these videos I have really learned so much. The only issue I have with focus stacking and bracketing is getting my OM1 and the V860iii to work together. It will work single shot but not for stacking is anyone else having these problems or is it just me ? . The camera has the latest firmware 1.5 . Any explanation or answer would be most appreciated thank you. If anyone has figured it out or the 2 are just not compatible then I would love to know I've tried finding the answer on the net but there's very little on the OM1 and V860iii . Thanks in advance for a reply.

I'm so grateful for this!! I finally can do focus stacking with flash, BTW, here's an easy fix if you already own a small flash from Olympus (I have the FL-M3) you can use that as a "trigger" for the external flash!! -I just point the FL-M3 where it can be "seen" by the other flash at minimum (1/64) and the external as a "Slave" (S1) and you can save from getting a new trigger. Now I finally found a use for that little flash

I had a discussion with a macro photographer that was using Godox flashes. I claimed that when shooting focus bracketing with an Olympus flash (FL-700/900) I don't need to set a charging time because the camera will not take a shot unless the flash has enough power. With Godox flashes - depending on the output level and number of shots - I need to set a prober charge time. Otherwise I will end up with shots where the flash didn't trigger. I'm using a OM-1. You mentioned that the E-M1 might handle it differently. Another strange thing with Godox flashes is that the camera stop shooting before it has reached the set number of shots when I use a Godox trigger. For example, I set the number of shots to 40 but the camera stop shooting after 13 shots. The trigger I used is X2T and the flashes are TT350 and TT685. The X2T doesn't support legacy hot shoe.

What you have stated is my experience as well. As for legacy mode, I put some tape over the 4 pins on the camera's hot shoe and mounted the trigger. Works the same as legacy mode!

Hi there! Thank you so much for this solution and for letting us know that it also works with hi-res tripod. The new trigger wasn't available in my region, so I fixed the issue by just putting some duct tape over the three extra pins and only leaving the main one uncovered! It's not very pretty but it works like a charm!

I and my friends shoot a lot of macro, one in particular makes diffusers for use with Oly/OM and Canon cameras. We normally use Meike 320 flashes, however they don't sync for focus stacking. After researh and testing it was found that the Godox VN 350, not the TT 350, will sync and flash for each exposure. The VN 350 is a good size for the OM1 unlike the 600 and 800 series which are just too large for a small camera. We are, after all, shooting macro so the size does matter in this scenario. Hope you are surviving the weather your country is going through, we here in Australia are midwinter and are about to have a few 29C/84.2F days where I live, so it is a warm winter this year. Our fire extremes happen near the end of the year. .

Same experience here. I use the Flashpoint V350-O which is exactly the same as the Godox counterpart. The only reason I picked the Flashpoint is in case I need to claim warranty & Adorama covers it. The V350 works beautifully with the OM-1 Focus Stacking. The lithium ion rechargeable battery alone makes it worth it since I used to carry a lot of AA batteries for my Meike 320. The V350 also has never misfired in my experience. Makes me so irritated with the kind of experience I had with Nikon's & Canon's top speedlights that are almost 4x the price of a V350. And the size gives a good height for my diffuser, not too tall like a regular speedlight but not too low like the Meike 320. Good day!

I'm thinking of replacing my tt350 with the vn350. My tt350 is getting flaky and not powering on all the time. I'm not really into macro, so size is not an issue for me when it comes to flash. Still, it's nice to carry a small flash with me everywhere.

@@jimwilson542 Hey Jim! Sorry for the late reply. Yes you are right in thinking the Godox/Flashpoint V350-O works with the OM-1’s Focus Stacking feature. Here’s what worked for me. I use the M.Zuiko 90mm macro. When I set the stack at 15shots, 4 focus differential, 0 charge time…I am able to get flash on all frames IF the flash power is set to 1/16 or weaker. I use a homemade white plastic diffuser with a foam glued to it. I get really good pics between from f3.5 to f11. I’d say my success rate with these settings is about 60% HANDHELD because I have shaky hands even with the IS turned on both on the body & the lens plus the 90mm focal length. Of course, the percentage increases drastically with a tripod. When I set the flash power to anything above 1/16…the speedlight’s recharge time is longer & you will need to set the charge time on the camera to a longer interval. This then results to my struggle of trying to keep the camera steady for an even longer time. In my opinion & use-case, to set the charge time longer than 0 defeats my purpose because of my shaky hands. So that’s my own limitation when it comes to using the Focus Stacking on with the Godox V350. You might not have that problem with a .1sec, .2sec, .5sec or even a 1sec charge time. If so then you can have an even better success rate than me while doing a handheld shot with the stacking & flash on. To sing my praises to the V350, I went to a garden yesterday & my camera was probably powered on or on standby for almost 6 hours & the flash was on for the same duration. I used up on BLX-1 & 2 Wasabi equivalents. But the speedlight’s Li-ion battery was still at around 60% when all was said & done. And I probably lit about 3,000 frames with the flash. A big chunk of that were single frame shots with 1/2 power. Even with the limitations I mentioned, if my V350 ever breaks then I’m buying another one in a heartbeat. For these reasons: rechargeable, battery life, good size & more than enough power even when used with a white plastic diffuser & a packing foam glued to it. Apologies for the long reply, I was just happy & excited to share my experience with you.

@@RobTrekSir, first of all, I must thank you for all that you do for us. All these informative videos that’s on your channel, that’s how manuals should be written. I’ve always wondered why manufacturers brag about features on ads when a camera is coming out but they never explain those features in their manuals & more importantly the don’t always explain the use-cases for those features they dearly brag about. Rant aside, the V350 was a day & night difference for me because of the Li-ion battery. I also have the V1, same thing. I will never go back to AA-battery-powered speedlights again. Purely just out of convenience. Also, in my experience, Godox speedlights are just more reliable that Nikon & Canon. I used to have a Nikon SB-900 & my bestfriend a Canon 580EXii they were both anything but hearthaches & overheating. They were also almost twice the cost of the V1s. At $150, the V350 is not cheap. But to me it was worth every penny. At least for my use-case. Thank you again for your hard work!

Hi Rob, I want to shoot insects with my fuji Xt4 body and fuji 80mm macro lens. But I am very curious about one thing. Can I shoot handheld like olympus users with the stacking feature on fuji cameras? I was confused by the very fast shooting range during stacking And can my godox tt685 flash overcome this, or which flash can do it? I also have a diffuser but I haven't used it yet :)

Thanks so much for the time you put in to answer my question .You should be an OM ambassador in my opinion :) . I use the flash for on camera stacking out in the field with insects etc . I tried one last time to get it to work and after seeing a comment by someone that you have to alter the white balance ?? I decided to try that , and wow it worked i could focus stack with the 860 . However if I take the flash off and use it just for single shots in good light the control panel still thinks its in flash mode all you can adjust is the shutter f stop and iso . So its not rerally a fix :( and it might not work all the time . Looks like I will have to buy a v350 as others use this and it works ok . I bought the 860 because of the reviews of the battery life . ( I`m going to have more flashes than lenses for this camera :) ) .
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 11 месяцев назад
I think the advantage of the v350 over the tt350 is simply the recycle time. The lithium battery makes a huge difference. But I'm sure you realize that having an 860. As for the other things you wrote, I'm a bit confused. Please elaborate on what this white balance trick is. If I'm using the flash on-camera, focus stacking works regardless of white balance setting. Also, if I take the flash off for single shots, the flash icon greys out in the control panel and I'm back in full control of the camera. I'm not even sure I answered your question in this video, as I assumed you were having trouble using stacking with off-camera flash. Let me know. Thanks. -Rob
@jimwilson542
@jimwilson542 11 месяцев назад
@@RobTrek I am not sure how it worked either I asked a pro photographer I know and he was bewildered but I did change the white balance setting after I had tried everything else i had seen suggested , the comment was made by someone replying to a question as it had worked for him to someone who was having the same problem v860iii and OM1 not working together for stacking . As I mentioned it was not the ideal solution so a couple of days ago I reset the camera and was resigned to the fact to just use the flash for single shots . I set my C1 to focus stacking because in good light I am getting nice results hand held and no flash . I had the flash on the camera and had forgot to turn it off when i saw a nice insect to stack and hey presto the flash worked as though it was set up for it ? it fired multiple times even though the recharge time was set to zero . So I changed the settings in stack to 0.1 recharge time and it worked ok for the rest of the day . Anyway I have just retested it did a few test stacks and it works ok as though it was meant to so fingers crossed it will carry on working ok . The v860 works great I use it in manual mode . I hope this helps ( I`m not the best at explaining things in writing so thats why there could have been some confusion about how I use the flash thats my fault ) . And once again many thanks for the time you put into these videos and explaining the OM cameras .

I had to look up whether my remote trigger has this legacy mode. I have an R2 PRO N. The R2 PRO N and R2 PRO Mark II N do not have this. On the R2 XPro II model has this. Enabling legacy mode also disables TTL and HSS so you would have to use manual mode on the flash.

Hi Rob. thanks for the very informative video. I have a Godox V 860III N which I use with my OM1. I have to switch the flash off and then on again for it to work when using focus bracketing and focus stacking. This is a bit of a pain as I'm new to this equipment and I'm trying really hard to remember everything, I sometimes forget to switch off and on again. Do you know if there is a fix for this ? I'm wondering if Godox is going to be problematic with this system and would I be better going with a different flash ? Many thank's.

I suspect the "N" version for Nikon is not compatible with the OM-1. Hence, this odd behavior. Try using a little scotch tape to cover the 4 smaller contacts on the hot shoe and see if that works.

Hi. Sorry for the very late reply. Unfortunately, for focus stacking, the godox flashes do not work with the OM-1. However, focus bracketing should work. The key to focus bracketing is to make sure you're not using flash power more than 1/8th or 1/16th. If you need more power, you need to set the charge time to the allow the flash time to recycle.

Hey Rob!!! I have the exact opposite problem I have the godox V1 in the om1 and it doesn't work focus brkt with the flash but when I add the trigger works like charm! any suggestions?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 месяцев назад
My V1 works when I set it to Manual. In TTL mode, it fails. So you will need to set the power output of the flash. Make sure you set it to power output that matches the bracketing. For example, 15 shots, set power to 1/16 or lower. For 25 shots, 1/32 or lower. If the flash output is not enough to light the scene, then you'll need to raise iso or use a lower aperture. Shutter speed won't have much effect but it needs to be less than the sync speed 1/250 for mechanical and 1/100 for electronic shutter.

Hi Rob, I find your videos very helpfull and informative. Though I have a problem during focus stacking with my set-up of the OM-1 and godoxV350. Everytime I try to stack or bracket fotos, the camera will take like 4 photos (with 4 flashes) and than pauzes for half-whole second, and than continous with it's other shots of the stack. I am really confused to why this is, it makes for failed hand held stacks becaus of the delay (wich makes it more likely for me to move a bit). I really need your help, I myself am no expert in camera settings, I am still learning alot, I know even less of flash settings. I somehow by myself got the camera linked to the flash (attached), and working decently with the stacks and bracketing, but in a way worse way than I think it's possible to do it. Can you please help me by telling me what the most essential settings are on my camera and flash to make the focusstacking better sinked with my flash (I found that the power of the flash didnt matter). I want to use this stacking for handheld shots of insects (which goes really well in single shots). I hope you can help me figure this out! Btw I also found you on instagram :)
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 9 месяцев назад
It's most likely the flash power is too high and it pauses to recycle. Try not to use anything more than 1/8th power and it should work smoothly. However, if that is not the case, let me know all your exposure settings so I can further diagnose.

Hi Rob, I have a Focus Stacking image capture question not directly related to this video...I use an Oly EM5 Mk III. I want to create a series of image captures to stack in Ps 2024 (not in camera). I plan to use manual Focus Pt placement vs in-camera focus bracketing. Here's the question: Must I place my focus points on contrasty edges of my selected objects throughout the foreground to background of the scene, or is it okay to place the focus point centered on each object (in other words, not an edge)? Thx!
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 7 месяцев назад
You need to think about moving the focus plane along the entire depth of the subject. A good way to practice is lay a ruler down on the table and start focusing from 0" to 10". Make sure your depth of field overlaps as you move the focus point from front to back. Then stack in PS and look for "holes" - places that are out of focus. Then try again. If shooting smaller subjects, practice from 0" to 1" and so on.
