0:00 Charlie, just just as I pan around your wonderful bright garden, being from the Natural Growth Institute, we're all about how you can grow things better naturally.
You've got to remember: it takes as much fertiliser and water to grow a bad one as it does a good one. So get the good ones first.
0:21 UGF was the best I've had so far. You also breed dahlia's Charlie and your prefix is Devon. What's some of your more popular varieties out there?
Devon Toledo, which is the orange one between us, right, here.
Devon Elegance which is the pink one here between us.
0:49 It's Brett Bramble here of the Natural Growth Institute. I'm very excited and more so privileged to introduce you to Charlie, or Charles Smith - he lives down here in Tasmania in Stieglitz next to Saint Helens.
Charlie, you've won some major awards around Australia including the 'Dahl Award', which there's only been four recipients for that [Edit, 5 as at Sept’23] for their contribution to the Dahlia Society of Australia.
And recently, which is a large part of the reason we're down here, you've been awarded the Garden Clubs of Australia main award and they comprise 770 member clubs across Australia - And they're all allowed to put in their submission on who they think the best Gardener of the Year is and you've had your local Garden Club submit you as a candidate and they've awarded you the President's Award which is for a contribution of an individual to Gardening and/or Horticultural.
And Charlie, it's a massive achievement!
1:46 And you're standing in front of your wonderful Dahlia Garden. You grow about 1500 dahlias? Yep.
Presently you've got 131 varieties? Yes. And you've been involved in Dahlias for around about 60 years! Is that right?
That's right! I didn't think I was that old.
But growing dahlias or doing whatever sports you like doing, whatever hobby you're doing, it's no work and it's a pleasure to see that other people can see what you've done and what you've put into enjoying your own sport.
2:26 As a result of crossing and seeding, this variety is Devon Citation. I grew this from seed nearly 50 years ago and on the show benches now it is still one of the best medium Cactus grown.
2:45 Once you get your soil right and you start planting, you've got to remember it takes as much fertilizer and water to grow a bad one as it does a good one, so get the good ones first.
I usually start foliar feed around about Christmas time. That's basically all I use it is absolutely fantastic to put on your foliage. We find a hundred to one is the mixture recommended with one litre of fertilizer you can do 100 litres. It works out cheaper than any of the others. It also sticks to the leaves - It's slightly oily. I have found and it will stop or slow down powdery mildew on the leaves.
Then I give them a real good soaking, because a lot of that fertilizer, then the run off going to go into the bed and you're going to get that advantage through the roots. Right,
yes, good point. And how often would you put down the foliar feed with the UGF 6-in-1? Once a fortnight from December to the end of February.
3:59 You mentioned there a couple years ago that you felt that the bottom leaves in particular, were hanging on longer and greener and larger, tell us a bit about that...
4:07 Yes, I found that. And I've also found that when they die they make more of a mess, haha.
But UGF was the best I've had so far. Everyone that I've supplied the fertilizer to has been absolutely wrapped in it.
If I can get UGF I won't buy anything else.
