A very well put together video containing a wealth of information. I've actually saved this video as a reference video. There are categories that are new to me and now that you have peeked my interest the hunt is on. Great video!

Wow, that is a great vote of confidence. Thank you, Una. You know, I whetted my own appetite making this video too. Disgusted to see my double orchid dahlia, Julie One, finally succumbed to rot this year so, at a minimum, I really need to replace that one if I possible can. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend.

I have to mention regarding Group 7, I have a couple of pompons called 'Tam Tam' which have open eyes, with large sized heads, and the ratio of flower to leaf is skewed heavily toward the flower (but can't compete with other types). Also they're still shooting out lots of buds now compared to my mignon and bishops, which are starting to really wind down. Dahlia 'Tam Tam' is great as the bees, hoverflies, and butterflies like it too. (have images to prove). I'm creating a wildlife garden, so I have to say any of the single types are my favs.

Tam Tam sounds great. Lovely deep colour. The RHS has it down as a ball type, by the way. I will have to look out for it. Thanks for sharing and have a super weekend.

Thank you SO much for this video! I have not grown dahlias myself, but I am planning to get some next Spring. I think I will start out with some smaller ones for containers. Generally I am drawn to flowers with single petals, and I absolutely love anemones. Some of the decorative ones are also appealing to me. So many choices!

Its amazing that plant breeders have been able to produce all these varieties from a simple daisy-like flower. The anemone flowered ones at 5:23 in the video remind me of giant scabious (cephalaria gigantea) - which I think would make a very good planting partner for it. The semi cactus dahlias look unusual but nature kind of rivals that flower shape in some types of monarda.

You know me, I love the Cactus and Semi-Cactus types (while the ball and pom pom are my least favorite, we happen to be opposites here I think 😉). But I do love the little miniatures too, typically just sold as seed packets of "border Dahlias" or flats of "mixed border Dahlia" here in the US, but if you shop around you might be able to find specific varieties like "Beliner Kleene", "Bluesette" or "Margareth Kleene". They're so cute at the front of a bed.

Bedding dahlias can be just gorgeous and absolutely worth growing. You know, about the cactus dahlias. I said I didn't like them but putting up those two photos in the video, I began to think how super they looked 😂

Fascinating! I know dahlias are sun lovers, but in your experience have you found any varieties that are slightly more shade tolerant?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza Год назад
I must say that I do sometimes plant dahlias in semi-shade but their performance is always less than optimal.

Question. I'm growing dahlias for the first time and absolutley love them. When I was planting one of the tubers ( in a pot) I noticed it had leafy gall. Since I was curious and also planting in separate pots I decided to not dispose of it and watch it grow. It was the first one to bloom out of about 10 different tubers and the colors are my favorite so far. I'm cutting the massive growth nodules at the base with steril chippers. I know I shouldn't save the tuber for next year and I can't take cuttings but if I cover several blooms to keep the bees from cross pollinating them, will the seeds be capable of producing the same flower without the Gall?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 19 дней назад
Sorry to hear about your leafy gall. I cannot say whether or not the gall will be transmitted by seed, although I doubt it. I will say however that your dahlia (unless it's a species) will not come true from seed. Double dahlias, for example, always produce offspring that are single from seed.

Brilliant video you keep it so interesting. Can we address the elephant in the room, slugs! Mine are nearly elephant size. They eat my young, grown from seed plants everytime, collarette Dandy.. I don't use slug pellets, anyone got tips for me?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
Thank you for such kind words. Slugs can really be a pain. I understand you don't use pellets (and neither do I in the garden) but you might consider a row of them on the inside of your greenhouse door. It can be very effective and, because it is inside the greenhouse, the birds are not going to eat any poisoned slugs. Alternatively copper strips for around your pots? Anyway, enjoy your weekend.
