In this video I interview a few of my Ford service technicians to see which engine they would choose if they were to pick up a new 2019 Ford F150 truck. This video is based of the video that Mitchell Watts first aired with his channel Town and Country TV almost 2 years (6-23-17) ago to this date (6-21-19). It was a fun experiment and got some valuable feedback while having some fun.
Its always great information to learn which ford f150 engine our service technicians feel is best out there.

You didn't mention the 3.5 high output model is different than the 3.5 I'm happy with my 15' supercrew xlt, 36 gal. No problems yet other than a faulty auxillary transmission pump which is only operating with start/stop feature. I love the 2.7l turbo sound.. Also worth mentioning turbos are great in high elevation areas as they do better towing as they aren't starving for air, I feel like the small engine warms up fast. No issues with the engine, I like the instant power.

not with this new green deal. we can kiss V8's goodbye. if you have Resorces start collecting V8's a friend of mine in fl., in the 70's began collecting big block chevy any big block ford any big block Chrysler and some small blocks of special interest. today Hes retired and selling motors last time I heard he had over 20 tractor trailers full of motors and select transmissions technically the motors were free, he did scrap so the car paid him and the free motors he saved, now motors go from a grand to 3 grand depending on condition. some more some less but the bucks are there. my 454 tall block iron heads, I been offers 1900. WTF! I paid $600 in '82 too much money then, but I wanted it and knew the owner of the Surburban that it came from with oil cooler trailer package oversize rad. all the toys, so I put a cam in it to hop things up and it's a "WTF rocket." 390 hp originally. likely now 425 easy possibly 450. never dyno. but runs like 500hp. so it seemed running in my 1970 C15. and trucks are likely to go electric, much cheaper to operate

Even though nobody chose it, I'm glad Mr. Lopez remembered that the 3.3L V6 exists. I've watched a similar video where the guy asking mechanics about their preferred F-150 engine never even mentions the 3.3L V6. Sure it's not the 5.0L V8, but it's a solid choice if all you want is an affordable naturally aspirated engine in your daily driver.

I just bought a new (to me) 2019 5.0L King Ranch F-150. 62 years old and old school mentality here. I chose the 5.0 for the reliability aspect; less points of failure. As a retired aircraft engineer, my thought process here is; you can only squeeze so much HP out of an engine before it prematurely wears out. As a motor-head, there is no replacement for displacement. Well edited videos, keep them coming!
@Askjorgelopez
@Askjorgelopez 2 года назад
Hey thanks for watching!
@CajunRulez
@CajunRulez Год назад
The 5.0 actually has more moving parts, just as technically involved as the 3.5, has major oil consumption issues, and has to be revved very hard to reach optimal torque and HP. On the other hand, the two Ecoboost engines produce peak torque(500 lb ft. for the 3.5, and 400 for the 2.7)below 3,000 RPMs. So as a motorhead myself, working and stressing the engine less to produce greater results than the 5.0 equates to longer engine life. Turbos are actually very simple and have been around a long time. There is a replacement, it's called the Ecoboost. Both will out run, out tow, out haul, and out last the 5.0; especially the 2.7. Look into it. It may turn out to be the most durable engine in the F150 ever. It's built like a tank, and punches well above its weight. After driving N/A V8s for about twenty two years I jumped into the 3.5 Ecoboost(that was in 2013. Still have it BTW, and it's been reliable as Hell). The old 5.4 Triton V8, even with an intake and tune, felt like I was dragging a lead sled compared to how effortless the Ecoboost accelerated, especially when towing. And, I had 3.73's in the old truck. No comparison; not even close. You're mossing out buddy.

I'd like to know how many gen 1 eco boost trucks have 250k+ miles on them and have never had anything done to them regarding the engine, including the turbos as those are an essential component to the function of the ecoboost. Why gen 1 specifically? Well, because I own a gen 1 coyote in an f150 that meets all those requirements, so I'd like to see if the comparable EBs can stand up to the task.

I use to be a 5.0 guy, but back in 2016 I needed a truck ASAP, and the only one that had the setup I needed, crewcab, fx4, trailer assist, trailer tow package, and XLT was on a 2.7 ecoboost. I was very nervous in getting it, but we are in 2020, I have almost 90k miles on it and it's a beast. I use it for work and family everyday. I have a 6" lift, a deck tool box, highway products service body, 35" toyo tires, 4:56 gears, fire stone air compressor with air bags, front and rear fab four bumper, and towed just a little over 9k lbs, with no issues at all. I still get 16-18 in the city, and 20-22 on the hwy.

@@anthonydescoteaux-mcdonald3254 The 2.7 is actually more reliable than the 5.0 and the 3.5. It'll leave the 5.0 in the dust for whether towing or racing. It's much more than a city engine. Let me add, if you want to buy 9 quarts of oil per change, and then constantly have to check and refill, get the 5.0. If you want to worry about cylinder deactivation failing, get the 5.0. I don't worry about my turbos. They've been there and working fine for ten years. On past trucks I've replaced differentials, injectors, coils, ECUs, one transmission, alternators, starters, A/C compressors, power windows motors, water pumps, etc. Do you not worry about all those things failing? I don't understand the worrying about turbos rationale. And the 5.0 is not "all engine". It's just as technically complicated, if you will, as the Ecoboost. You spelled worry wrong, btw. I think the old school auto techs are just scared of the Ecoboost because you all can't wrap your heads around the technology.
@dannyg5636
@dannyg5636 Год назад
@CajunRulez I'm not old school, just my preference. The technology is not intimidating because I'm well educated. I'd rather not daily drive something with twin turbos because I see problems from many manufacturers with turbos. Many things you listed do go wrong, your absolute right, and not that I don't worry about them, but most of the things you listed aren't overly expensive, with the exception of a few. Also, to be honest, I haven't personally condemned a lot of ecu's in comparison to turbos.

I don't think they offer it anymore, but from a reliability standpoint, I've heard the 3.5 duratec is also amazing. My Explorer has one. The biggest issue are the internalized water pump issues, but from my understanding, this issue isn't that wide spread, and was sort of worked out over the years. Most techs/mechanics I've talked to have said the 3.5 duratec should last easily 150k-200k without issues. Considering the fact that my 2017 Explorer only has 9,800 miles on it, with oil changes roughly every 1,500 miles, and that it's almost never revved past 3k, I think reliability shouldn't be an issue lol.

Puff the Magic Dragon that is true the 3.5 is a great engine but when the water pump goes its a pricey repair. the 3.5 was never offered in the f150 only the 3.7 was which is a similar engine to the 3.5 but that engine is no longer offered

I bought a 2011 with a 5.0....i test drove a 3.5 eco boost and was happy with the power of both trucks. The decision came when I open the hoods on both trucks and noticed how much easier it was to service the belts, spark plugs ECT on the 5.0.....not to mention on a 5.0 there is no high pressure fuel system components to worry about or turbos. I've had 101000 trouble free miles on my truck....not even a check engine light ever

As an Aircraft Mechanic I can tell you which aircraft engines I would rather work on too. Asking a mechanic which engine he would rather work on is basically asking which one is less of a pain in the *ss to work on. Ecoboost engines have more parts and are more complicated than a naturally aspirated V8 that's been around for decades. The only thing the V8 in the F150 has going for it is that it's easier to work on and it sounds good. Beyond that the Ecoboost beats it in every category.

Thing is the tunabillity and upgradability of the 5.0 is unprecedented. It's the Mustang gt motor with minor changes. Theres a reason they didnt put the ecoboost in the mustang gt, gt350r, or gt500. It would suck ass. I still think it was a mistake to put the 3.5 in the new GT car. How much better it would have been with the 5.2 Terminator motor that's in the gt500. Then the GT would have 800+hp and sound beautiful likes it's supposed to instead of 650hp in the EcoBoost
@jeffcoats7982
@jeffcoats7982 4 года назад
As usual in this subject there are those that comment with no experience with the ecoboost. Bradford want to know if HP is a category, and of course it is and he doesn't know that the HO 3.5 ecoboost has SIGNIFICANTLY more HP than the 5.0. Clay shows his lack of knowledge with his comment about the ecoboost by stating that the 3.5 would suck ass, which is absurd, and WRONG. The naturally aspirated V8 will never make the horsepower that the ecoboost does, period. If you want to change the dynamics of the question, by adding a twin turbo Coyote, then you are going to see it outperform the V6. That is just common sense. I agree that few things sound better than a Coyote V8 with a great exhaust system, I love it too. That great sound doesn't mean so much when the 3.5 Ecoboost blows by them though, does it? Oh and I forgot to mention that the 3.5 is upgradable as well. You can put larger turbo's and upgrade the computer to pull massive power from the 3.5 as well. To make the statement that the 3.5 would "suck ass" is idiotic; everyone knows that less weight in a race car is better, and that is one of the many reasons that the GT has the ecoboost. Those that have no experience with driving one in all situations don't have a clue, and for good reason. It is impossible to explain the difference in power, you have to feel it.
