I just grab 50gsm paper. I often find, like when a baker knows it is a wedding cake, extra cost is added to papers named specifically. 50gsm paper is freely available and much cheaper.

Cool - so is that just like thinner printer paper then? I’m sure you are right about the name/cost thing!

Freezer paper is my favorite. Sticks well for me and no tearing. I took a class using vellum the same way as freezer paper gluing a little as you go. Again no tearing.

Cool. Another commenter sent me to a video by the sewing channel where she used regular paper a bit like freezer paper but with glue. I imagine it was similar to your vellum class.

Goodness, you made it so hard for yourself by not cutting your fabrics approx to size first! It’s not the most fun bit, but it makes the FPP go much smoother… But it’s the end result that matters! 😀😀😀
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 года назад
For me it’s easier not to cut them first to be honest. I want to get straight to sewing and I’m going to trim it after anyways so I figure why spend all that time cutting to start 😂. But it’s different strokes for different folks!

I just buy newsprint - the type of paper that we used in elementary school for everything (it used to be lined for) and some not lined for our painting and drawing) you can get huge reams - like 1000 sheets of it from Amazon for $10. If you buy the same type from one of the packages that you have, they charge $10 for only 25

I wonder if that is thicker than the kind of newsprint I tried that I couldn’t get through my printer? Hmmm…

I like newsprint paper for my fpp. I used a commercial printer with the side feeder and worked but using the regular printer draw didn't work. I was surprised that you feeding it wouldn't work but printers are different. Amazon has the best price in a ream that is 500 sheets.
@ScrapFabricLove

Yes my printer just might not be the best. I assumed that one would work since they sold it specifically printer size but 🤷‍♀️
@sadiejosiemom
@sadiejosiemom 2 года назад
Good information! You can use the method you used with the freezer paper with your printer paper where you folded it but didn't sew through it. That saves paper and time. Use it until it falls apart. I want to say I saw that one Tiny Orchard Quilts but can't be certain. She also uses a light box. I have an old type that is like a couple of inches deep and one of the new flat ones. The old one still works and is good on your lap if your plan is to do tracing. The flat one is from cricut and I probably had a coupon or something from JoAnn or something because I don't remember paying full price. The one that TOQ uses is much bigger and way more expensive than mine. I even put a plastic sheet/cutting board from the dollar tree on top so I could use my rotatry blade to cut if I want to. Just don't press hard enough to cut through but still protecting the glass. The way you used uncut yardage seemed so fiddly but to each her own! Oh, and I've used newsprint from a ream (from amazon) successfully in my really cheap hp inkjet printer with success.
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 года назад
I’m jealous that your printer will take newsprint! I kind of like sewing on the paper…am I weird? I like knowing I am bang on that line 😂. The light box I got was called cutterpillar I think. It isn’t very thick and it does come with a cutting mat. I’ll see if it’s useful before I decide if I’ll do a video about it.

It’s too bad the newspaper didn’t feed through your printer, if you ever get another printer 🖨 give it a second chance. I do a ton of FPP and find newspaper the cheapest (500 sheets for $20 Canadian) and doesn’t add weight to my block. Also be careful, sometimes the ink will transfer directly to you fabric or from the bottom of your iron to your fabric. I always iron so that’s how I know. I don’t cut any pieces ahead of time either but what I will do is cut strips of fabric based on the widest width needed for that fabric. For example in your block I would measure diagonal tip to tip on the block and add 1 inch then cut a strip that wide. Then I’d use that strip to sew from. Now in your case that would be the same for both white and red because the largest white piece is also the same as the red. I hope I am explaining myself well enough to be understood. I do try to be judicious in using my fabric and yet somewhat speedy too, somewhere in the middle.
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 года назад
Yeah I wanted the newsprint to work too! Such a shame! I always use all my scraps regardless so I prefer to get straight to sewing and skip any measuring. That’s why I like FPP. If I was going to measure and cut I’d probably just piece normally 😂. Different people are drawn to FPP for different reasons I suspect! I think my printer isn’t the best, cause a few people have said they could print the newsprint…oh well.

I use a 55gsm paper that comes in a A4 writing pad that you can buy at office stores in packs to make it cheaper, it goes through my printer - but I have a ink jet not sure how it goes through other printers. If you are looking for some specific templates or to make 1/2 square triangles - I have found that Triangles on a Roll and Fat Quarter Shop make good paper piecing products. FYI - CLOSE your rotatory cutter PLEASE - your hand came very close to the blade several times during the video.
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 года назад
😂 everyone always worries about my rotary cutter! Haven’t cut myself yet! I have some triangles on a roll actually but haven’t got round to trying them yet. Always want to try ‘all the things’ and there is never enough time!

@@ScrapFabricLove Kristen you said the magic word "yet" I hope you don't get cut. I have used Triangles on a Roll - really like the product, but they are kept in a drawer that is hard to reach at the moment, and I always forget to get them out for my projects. 😂

I use plain newsprint that comes in a 12x12 piece. I've used Phone book paper and I've used exam room paper from my doctor's office. I'm considering using some muslin since I have a whole bolt of it. So far my preference is the plain newspaper from Amazon.

The precut freezer paper only worked 2-3x, but maybe my iron is hotter than it needs to be. I use a sunny window instead of a light box and it works fine. Thanks for the experiment!

I've never tried FPP. Seems pretty fiddly and confusing to me. I have done some string quilting on paper squares with the grandkids and we didn't like tearing away the paper. So we switched to sewing the strips to batting squares instead and we all liked it better. Thanks for the comparisons

Do you think tracing paper is ok to cut squares to then sew strips of fabric onto it? I'm wondering about how it would tear away from the stitch? Do you think i could get away with that? it's cheap.

Why don’t you do what the pro’s do and fold back paper on the starting line, and you can see the exact 1/4” seam allowance from the start. Match edge of piece 2 to that perfect visible seam. Lay paper back down, flip and sew. Press, fold back paper on next line and trim to 1/4” seam. Match next piece’s edge exactly, fold paper down, flip and sew, press, trip to 1/4” seam. Keep repeating and you never have to hold up to the light or see through a paper. Simple easy and very accurate. I use whole hunks of fabrics but with one clean edge at the start, saves fabric and is so easy, you don’t get “holes” by being to short on fabric. Try it. Hope this converts more folks to FPP technique. So accurate and can creat fun images. Keep up the good work.

I use freezer paper or sometimes parchment paper, but I find it to be too thick. I’ve thought of trying newsprint, but your attempt has me rethinking that. Irene from Sugaridoo uses something called teabag paper. I have been itching to try it, but it isn’t available in the USA. I wonder if one of your test papers was that? One of the papers you used looked almost like paper fabric and I think that is somehow the right texture.

@@ScrapFabricLove I should have waited until the end of your video to comment. Lol. I am obsessed with the teabag paper idea, I think because I can’t get it.
