A few years back, a friend of mine managed to contact John and John allowed us to visit his garage. His collection was so massive that there was no way that we could have possibly absorbed everything in the 2 hours or so we spent there. Not only is the size and his knowledge of his collection impressive, but the condition of his collection is astounding. John is a great guy and even burnt me a cd for my then recently acquired Dreamcast. I didn't even ask and he was happy to do it just to spread the love of video games. My friend and I were Zanac fanatics at the time and John showed us a sequel we didn't even know existed and allowed us to play for a while. John, if you happen to read this, THANK YOU! It was a great privilege to see your collection!

Don't understand all the hate and jealous comments towards John. On top of his amazing collection, he runs Cowlitz Gamers for Kids Show, which has helped raised over 16k for charity in the past 4 years. He's a really nice and humble guy to be around. Grats on 20+ years of collecting!

@bean420man
@bean420man 10 лет назад
Wow, there must be a lot of jealous people here, with all of the hoarding comments. What is supposed to happen to the games? Should they stay in a flea market, in a landfill, on a shelf in a warehouse or wherever else? There were usually millions of copies of each game made ( except for the rarities or niche games). What would be the point of that. John Hancock has at least bought these games, enclosed them in plastic cases, probably cleaned a good many games out, organized, displayed and cares for the games. Is he the only person to do this? No but he is one of few who has such an extensive collection. If this makes him happy, then so be it. I would love to have such a collection. Could I sit and play every one and beat them all? No. That would just be impossible to do, while maintaining a "normal" life. Don't be jealous of what he's worked hard for. Also, remember that he says that he trades games also. If he was to buy a hundred copies of each game and then never trade or sell them, then that would be hoarding. He is collecting and does a good job of displaying and preserving video game history.

8000 games? If he played 1 game a day it would take him 22 years to play all of them (though in that time he'd probably have bought like another 20,000 games, so...)
@zyriuzstorm9971
@zyriuzstorm9971 10 лет назад
But if you are a collector you sometimes have to collect games you don't like to play, do you really play through a game that you really hate just to see the ending? I have played through a lot of my megadrive games but not all and that's simply because some games haven't been that fun and some arcade games are just the same over and over again but faster so in order to consider that finished should I play it untill the high score meter stops counting? Is it finished then? Well to end up on a good note I see your point and sure you should always try to beat em and one shouldn't talk about the as if they finished it if they haven't, but again try to beat 8000+ is almost impossible,
@Gamefan86
@Gamefan86 10 лет назад
Zyriuz Storm These idiots know they are not going to play them or complete them, when they buy them. They are just buying games to have them, it's pathetic. It is not collecting, it is hoarding.
@zyriuzstorm9971
@zyriuzstorm9971 10 лет назад
But i think he has a Fair point, i think its good to collect games reserve history, but on one other hand a game is at most use being played right, so in that point it makes more use than just being sitting on a shelf, at least I think so but it all depends on your interest of the games.
@WolfiKurisu
@WolfiKurisu 10 лет назад
Zyriuz Storm You could argue the exact same thing about anything, though..Coins are for spending, so coin collecting's gone. Stamps are for cards, so stick them in a letter box and wave them on. Playing cards, like Pokemon or Yugioh, no one uses all the cards..

Impulse buying is a result of hoarding which usually leads to a massive collection. However, these guys have obviously been collectors since they were kids hence why most of them have massive collections like this. Guys like PeterDorr and Gamester have a horde, but believe it or not, they stick to a fucking budget and WORK FOR THEIR MONEY!!!! There is even a fucking video of Peterdorr making a video of games he regrets buying, despite how cheap some of them were. Horders don't give a shit about what they buy, so long as they have it. The point is that people who collect video games for the sake of collecting, that is their hobby. If you think that what they are doing is wrong, then you keep your petty comments to yourself. If people want to spend their money doing what they enjoy, let them. Unless asked otherwise, opinions and comments should be kept to yourself. Like how I think it is stupid how people spend their time watching football or how people spend 100 dollars on a furcoat and so on...yeah I keep that shit to myself.

I'm fascinated by collectors and collections. Quite interested in stories behind certains games/versions of games/systems too. But still the thought that pops up in the end is allways... why.... what's the use of having 29 pong systems and thousands of games you cannot have played or you probably don't actually like. It must be a burden to be this obsessed. To be having to have stuff just for the having.
@fabiandesignz
@fabiandesignz 9 лет назад
warius1 It's not good to be obsessed with something. I agree. It might just be a hobby of his though. I have almost a full collection of Star Wars figures from the 1995 series in their packaging. Even figures that I don't like. It's just a hobby to collect them all. Kind of like when someone wanted a full collection of a baseball card series. I'm not obsessed with collecting. I can pass a figure I don't own and won't bat an eye. But there are people who would starve just to have material things like a few people I know who collect Nike Air Jordan's.
@TekMoliGy
@TekMoliGy 9 лет назад
warius1 when i got into collecting it was before the big collecting craze caught on and i just felt like i was saving these old video games from the trash bin because i knew they were history and were really cool and thought people would realize it one day... now that everyone seems to know that they have some value i no longer like collecting as much because i don't feel like people know not to just throw old games away anymore.
@warius1
@warius1 9 лет назад
Thanks for sharing your views guys. There IS use in explaining. I understand now that there can be motives for collecting other then obsession. I guess it just me; if I myself was a collector, I could be the type of person that could go overboard with it. Maybe that's why l myself like to have as little stuff as possible, and the thought of having a basement full of anything gives me the creeps. But still love to have a look in some one elses :)

Again I don't really expect anyone to understand why I collect other than the fact that I collect for the love and passion that I have doing it. I also am a game historian so I like the good and the bad. Thank you for your kind words about the collection.

I remember watching this video when it first came out. I have a PS3 Slim and I had no idea it played PSX games until I watched this video. Since then, I've gone to thrift stores and used game stores on the hunt for PSX games and I've found so many. It seems like there's always PS 1 games at Goodwill.

He wants to have complete collections...I haven't played video games in years and this video tempted me to collect video games. Everyone is throwing around the word "hoarder" as if you are actually concerned with his well-being, which you are obviously not. I mean I get it, it's the internet and people are trolls or just want to say shit about others for no apparent reason. I admire him for going after something and sticking to his guns...if you disagree then go somewhere else

Game collectors are the coolest people. They archive a smaller history for the world.

as a avid gamer, just seeing the title of the video and the thumbnail gave me this strange feeling I got kind of nautious and amazed cant describe, but yeah that would be amazing to have a room like that with all the consoles hooked up at the same time rready to go, it was like i saw a glimpse of heaven lol

Large retro computer collector. I have a decent Amiga, C64, Vic-20, TR-80,Ti 99 4A collection. I have several others, just to name a few. I mostly stick to NTSC computers that I can find in the States.

i can relate to this being a music collector, like when he says he collected most of the stuff in "the wild". i didnt do that with mine, a little more than half of my stuff has been bought online. there is nothing wrong with that but a older collector will hold that over your head. and to be fair it is a lot better feeling driving miles to some beat-up store and pulling out gold, than searching for that album and paying a bit more.

I can still see Stadium Events in my mind at the toy store when I was a kid. Must have passed it several times, it was in the back of the store where they kept all the import toys. Dammit why didn't I beg my folks for it!!!!

I bought John's 4 dvd set on old systems and games and it's just a wealth of information and he never comes off as "Fuck you all, I have all these games and you never will!". You can tell he's very humble and helpful.

Its great that there are people that play these old games but the sad part is the one that only collect them and look at them as a future bank, i though the purpose is to play these great games not store them, i have a big collection to but whenever i get tiret of a game i trade it with local collectors and we make sure we do not sell them to people who resell them.

I love how people talk about their first systems. My first system was the Magnovox Odyssey 2. That was one of the funnest and most underrated systems ever created. Then I bought my own Atari 2600, NES, SNES, traded SNES for Genesis with a friend, my mom got me the Saturn for my 17th birthday, it broke on me 2 years later so I got a PS1, then a N64, then a GameCube, then Wii, and now I have a Wii U and the Xbox Classic. The Xbox Classic is the only Xbox I liked so I got me one from my local used game store.

You can't equate your life goals to his. He enjoys his collection, even if it only gives him satisfaction for owning something rather than actually playing it. Who are you to say that he is too obsessed with his collection when he seems to be a fully functioning person who is still happy with what he is doing. From what I can see, he has a job that pays him well enough to have this hobby. He talks about budgeting, which means he thinks actively about what he spends, and it isn't on impulse.
