If the kiwifruit you planted is not very good use these grafting techniques to graft your preferred kiwi varieties to healthy and vigorous rootstocks. When your kiwi plant doesn’t produce where you live you can use the established root system and graft other varieties. Changing varieties is easy. Obtain a few scions of better varieties and use one of the grafting techniques shown in the video. Grafting to a well-adapted rootstock will also avoid many of the problems of growing more delicate kiwi varieties on their own roots.
To know more details about the grafting techniques used in the video check the channel for grafting technique specific videos.

I love your videos! This spring I got 14 scions of heritage apple varieties from my country extension. I watched several of your videos and grafted them onto young apple trees and suckers which I had separated from the mother tree. I only had 1 graft not take. I am thrilled. Thank you!

Unfortunately, the caprifig varieties I had were not adapted to my local conditions (they couldn't sustain the winter caprifig crop, year after year). I'm in the process of grafting a few very good caprifig varieties to some of my established trees. With luck these will be able to sustain all the caprifig crops necessary to install a permanent population of fig wasps. I will try to show the progress in future videos.

Thank you so much for sharing your vast experience with all of us! I have learned so much from your many excellent videos! Hands down, yours is the absolute best resource for us novice grafters/ and propogators-! Your videos are very visible, to the point, and your years of experience shared has made the learning curve for thousands of us seeking to expand our knowledge much less intimidating! I have a 50' row of Actinidia delicioso (7 plants) that's 7 years old, but apparently the " Male " I thought I had also planted was not a Male according to the flowers- Something to be said for buying from a reputable nursery versus the big box stores!- Finally got a Male this year ! It has grown well - several stems are +15' and I'm pruning the lateral shoots to 18" to promote flowering/fruiting and more lateral shoots- above the 6' trellis elevation. I'm trying some air layers and find them very slow to develop- Should I attempt to air layer the newest growth - or the older -3 month seasoned somewhat hardened growth? Looking to share with my daughters- ? Also, in my climate should i try to graft the yellow variety- and what is a good source for scions? As noted in the following paragraph, I'm finding issues with leaf spot/fungal disease affecting almost everything- a problem i haven't experienced before... aLSO 2022 - Just TRYING The Hardy Kiwis- I'm in Zone 7B - I have Issai as well as MSU female and a Meader Male- just starting this year - Finding impressive growth, but a type of leaf spot/fungal disease I've never seen is affecting almost all my plants- figs, Peppers, Both types of Kiwis, and even the muscadines- Any recommendations on control of fungus? I'm applying Daconil periodically and also removing any badly infected leaves as it appears . Also tried periodic applications of hydrogen peroxide sprays- but we ran into a period of 3 weeks of rains and high humiditiy in Early August that seemed to negate the fungicide treatments. Any thoughts on controlling this devestating problem in the orchard? And- a final note- I recommend your many videos to family and friends as the most comprehensive and succint on you tube for grafting, air layering etc. I failed last year in properly prepping my Fig scion woods- and tried both chip and cleft grafting- After reviewing your videos, i think the grafts failed because I failed to remove the existing buds that competed. Goal is to develop a fig with 5 or so different varieties...... I will do a better job this fall in collecting scion wood and refrigerating- My many Fig air layers this year will be the hosts of my trying to graft multiple fig varieties onto indivividual plants next year! - I'm prepping this season's air layers by pinching back the top Apical Growth to promote additional side branching- - and i will have some new experimenting in 2023!

I didn't know kiwis were so easy to grow and graft! Thanks! So extremely productive as well, look at that!!! Amazing! Do they die in the winter (if no frost), and do you need separate male and female? Or can you graft on same plant?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 года назад
They can be a bit slow to grow. They usually take 3 or 4 years to start production but they can be very productive if well pollinated and if the necessary chill hours are available. They are semi-tropical but they can resist cold and don't die in the winter. Ideal hardiness zones for established plants are 7-9. My 2 males are 10 years old and have 3 different female cultivars grafted and 2 males (the original and a grafted earlier flowering one) so, yes, you can graft male and female cultivars in the same plant. In commercial orchards, when planting individual plants, 1 male can pollinate up to 6-8 female plants.
@LuisC7
@LuisC7 2 года назад
@@JSacadura very good idea. you have normal kiwi, and yellow kiwi, and then you have what? A early flowering so you pollinate with the early flowering male? thus having extended fruit production?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 года назад
Its not a matter of having extended fruit production. The early flowering male is necessary to pollinate most yellow flesh kiwi, since those females also tend to flower earlier. With the normal males, used to pollinate green kiwi females, most female yellow cultivars will not produce for lack of adequate pollination.

this spring i tried chip budding a male kiwi onto my more vigorous female but he dried out because as you said the graft was too low. i will try it again on a younger, higher up branch that i can easily cut off the apical dominate part. thanks
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 года назад
The chip-buds have a better chance of survival when grafted to younger branches but they can be grafted lower in the branch. Just be sure to keep the grafted branch in control and gradually remove most of the upper growth, as soon as the grafts take.

is actinidia arguta (mini kiwi) and actinidia deliciosa (regular kiwi) compatible in crafting? i dont have so much space for growing so many different varieties separate.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 года назад
The grafts take but usually suffer from delayed incompatibility. Some last years and even produce fruit but most end up failing in the long run. There are some farmers that are trying to develop a few hybrids that may be used, in the future, as interstems to ensure better compatibility.

Why in the modified cleft graft you peel just a little bevel on the back cut and not the whole side, to have more cambium contact?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 года назад
The "secret" to the modified clef grafting technique is that small back cut. It's circular shape intersects perfectly the lower end of the cut in the rootstock and it practically guarantees a good cambium contact in that area (the cambium tissues of the rootstock and the scion always cross at some point). If you cut the whole back side of the scion, the only cambium contact areas are on the sides of both cuts, which can be difficult to align. Check min 1:25 of this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SOu15VsEIuM.html - to see what I mean.

What is the ideal moment for grafting kiwifruit? The scion should be at rest, and the rotstock should start with vegetation, but then a problem arises, because in the spring, at the cross section of the branch, the kiwi intensively leaks juice - "bleeds" and this prevents callus formation. In the video you say "late spring", how late? How much vegetation to start, how long the shoots to grow?

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 года назад
Kiwi is a semi-tropical plant. Even the low-chill Actinidia chinensis cultivars will need a few hundred hours below 7º Celsius to be able to flower and fruit properly. Unfortunately, unless you live in a microclimate area, above hardiness zone 9 they don't do well.

@JSacadura 2 года назад
Chip-budding is easy to execute as a technique but is tricky regarding the care and follow-up. Chips have very few energy resources and dry out quickly, so they have to be very well protected (using Parafilm and aluminium foil is very important with this technique). They also need a good balance between keeping the grafted branch alive and sap flowing and gradually removing any buds that inhibit or compete with the graft, as soon as the chip has taken. Also, its a technique that works better with some fruit types and not so well with others. Keep trying and you will eventually achieve success. Good luck!
